Eragon's Father
After reading the Eragon and Eldest. I felt motivated to read Eragon again. Since then I’ve been reading and agonizing over how Brom kept all of those secrets. Then it struck me.
Although Murtagh told Eragon that he is his bother, we have only his word; and if I remember correctly you can say anything in the old language, as long as you believe it to be true.
Im not saying that he isn’t his bother, but that they had different fathers.
In Eragon, Eragon asks Brom if he knew his mother.
"Well enough to miss her when she was gone." pg. 228
I think that Brom is Eragon's father and in Brom's hunt for the egg, he meet her. Then later she went to Garrow, to plea to him to take Eragon. Saying when asked why:
"I must."
I believe that it was not that she wanted to protect him from Morzan's cruelty, but to protect him from his wrath when he found out that she had a son, not of his own.
This would also help explain why Brom came to Caravahall. Not only was a secluded place but where his son lived.
Of course you maybe wondering why he would not tell Eragon, but as you all know he was secretive, and Eragon and Murtagh confirm this after Brom died.
Murtagh:
"I can think of no reason for him to have concealed it"
"Neither can I. But then, he kept many secrets." pg 280 talking about Zar'roc
In addtion to him being his father (as I believe), he almost took his secret about being a rider to the grave. And he was protective of Eragon against things that could harm Eragon. This would obviously cause harm to Eragon.
Not only would Brom die, but his father and his ambition to find his father. SO Brom in his great wisdom would have kept it a secret.
Again we must take this logically. Murtagh is still his bother, and they look similar. So when they entered Farthen Dur, and Ajihad talked to Murtagh. He instantly, saw that Murtagh was Morzan's, but he said noting of Eragon being Morzan's son to him or anyone we know of, so there is a chance that even this is proof that there is little resemblance, and therefore not his father.
Now this all could be a silly little thought that seems to fit in many places, and I would be happy to hear any of your comments.
AND keep in mind that this will ONLY be resolved in the completion of third book. I hope.

That is a very High possibility because if you remember when Murtagh told Eragon in the ancient language that he was his brother and Morzan was also his father. From all that Murtagh knows… (Because he wasn't there at the time Eragon was born) his Idea could be false even though it happened to fit. It could be false and he can only say it to be true in the ancient language because he believes it to be true. It still strikes me as weird for it to happen that way, but it is possible.

i've mentioned my thoughts on this matter before. (there are other similar topics) but i totally agree.
..they are only going on the fact that eragon, and murtagh have the same mom. but i have a sister, we have same mom diff. dad. but she is still my sister. if i had never known about her father i would have assumed we had the same father. although my parents are no longer married.
.. so i think brom being the father would be awsome. and give the story some irony.

Just some things I forgot to mention last night. (I was a little pressed for time.) They are only small things but give some deeper meaning.
During Eragon's training with the elves he learns that Oromis trained Brom. As he tells Eragon about Brom's history, He says
"You remind me of Brom when I chose him as my apprentice. He was younger than you, only ten, but his curiosity was just as great."
pg 279 When Eragon meets Oromis and wants to know all about the past.
Another example of how they could be related, and if all of this proves farce then at least we know Eragon will grow up much like Brom. They share so much in common.
Farm boys turned riders
From the Spine area
Both inquisitive in there youths
They idolize their peers *cough* Murtagh *cough* Morzan
And were betrayed by their peers
Oromis was their mentor
Their dragons are named Saphira
And they hate the Empire
I could go on, but you get the picture.
(Yes, I know Saphira choose her name, but both Dragons liked it. Showing similar thoughts.)
What I'm saying is.
Like father, like son.
AND Last and by far the most, odd, thought I had was that when Brom died; he told Eragon 7 words in the old language. If it is what I think, its Eragon's true name, then how did he find it?
I'll leave you to fill in the rest, or rebut it.
(I must confirm this is a very distant possibility, and have read the posts about the true name of Eragon, but still, you will NEVER know until the person that created the story tells you)
As for telling the truth in the old language (as long as you believe it to be true). I remember it in the second book (when he was with the elves). I’m still rereading the first book, but plan to find the part that talks about that in the second.
Thanks for posting.
Keep in mind that everyone makes mistakes. I'm NOT saying that I have, just don’t put faith into anything if you don’t believe it.
Ps: I kind of want someone to post things to rebut my theory.

Again I found some more. (Yes again.)
You remember when Angelina gave the foretelling of Eragon's future. Well I was surfing though that area in the book, and I came across where she was talking about Brom:
"... I’m afraid that the poor man's doom, or future if you will, is something of a joke with us."
pg 206 'book I' after hearing Brom's name.
"... If we meet again at the right time I'll be sure to tell you about it."
pg 206 'book I' after Eragon asks to hear the story.
SO I skipped ahead and found the part were, she tells him:
"Brom was cursed in a way. It was his wyrd to fail at all of his tasks except one, although through no fault of his own. He was chosen as a Rider, but his dragon was killed. He loved a women, but it was his affection that was her undoing..."
pg 435 'book I' Angela's story of how Brom is a "joke".
I think this may be the strongest hint, that Brom IS THE FATHER! (caterpillar) please go read it.
As the conversation continues...
"Brom never mentioned a women to me," retorted Eragon.
Angela Shrugged carelessly. "I heard it from one who couldn't have lied. But enough of this talk!..."
I’m sorry that I have divided this information into 3 different posts, but I feel very excited about this, and I am usually pressed for time. (Not to mention get very distracted on big projects.)
With this last, 'hint', I now have full belief in that Brom is Eragon's father
Who' yor daddy?

I agree with you completely Spartan, as I started an almost identical topic in the rumors section (topic name is "Morzan - Eragon and Murtagh's father?" if you want to look). There are several clues to this, most of which you mentioned, and my thoughts about the timeframes and how they don't quite seem to fit. You can read that in the topic mentioned above, as I don't want to waste space requoting my original thoughts. But by using logic, as Oromis stressed to Eragon during his training, it is easy to see how Brom may in fact be Eragon's true father and make him and Murtagh half brothers. I think in book 3 that Eragon will lose focus by brooding on the idea that he is a son of a Forsworn, but his despair will be turned around, perhaps when he reaches the Vault of Souls he will encounter Brom's soul and learn that Brom is really his father.....only book 3 will tell us though. Outstanding observation on all those clues!!!

I just read you post, and well WHOA. It never occurred to me to add up the birthdays and Brom’s disappearance. Thank you.
I was planning on persuading some friends next week as to who the father is, and the years that don’t add up is just what I needed. (For those who are stubborn.)
CP What are you thinking, telling us Morzan is the father!
Ps: Sorry I did not read the rumors forum. I consider rumors to be vile, wrong, and abusive. A topic such as this should be in a "Theories" section. *cough* admin *cough*

My dad as some sort of thing going on in his head that it is pretty much the same idea as spartans but Galobotrix is his father i find this highly unlikely though

i think that morzan is not the father because murtagh only mations them having the same mother not the same father.

Actually Murtagh does make the claim that Morzan is both their fathers. When he defeats Eragon and takes Zar`roc, he says something to the extent of "Morzan's sword should go to his eldest son, not his youngest."
But I'm still thinking Brom is Eragon's father in any case.

me too.
..your right. he does say that (in the al.) but him saying it doesn't make it true. as long as he beleived iut to be fact he can say it in the al.
no one has ever given him reason to think his mother loved another .

Even if Galbatorix tried to force Murtagh to say it, the ancient language would prevent it because one cannot lie in that tongue. There are only 2 ways Murtagh could have said it: 1) It is true that Eragon is Morzan's son, or 2) Murtagh believes it to be true.

very good catch fanasy fan.
..galby can only command murtagh as far as actions.
he knows murtagh would not be abble to lie in the al. but galby could know the truth and only lead murtagh to believe this in order to try and sway eragon to his side.

I def. think Brom is Eragon's father. At first I thought maybe it was Galby, but now that I think about it, there were a number of hints in the book about Brom...

Which could be exactly why Brom isn't Eragon's father. There's too many hints which makes it too obvious/predictable.

umm, Morzan is. this is in eldest section, so.... its not like we made it when eldest was coming out.... but murtagh could have been forced to say in the acient lang that he would tell eragon he was his brother and that morzan was there father so he would get zar'roc, and eternally sharp sword.

Yes, but murtagh might believe that they are both sons of morzan and selena, making the phrase true for him, so he could still say it in the ancient language.

Did you ppl ever stop to think about something??? Blagden said a riddle about Eragon's father and when Eragon asked him what he knew, he wouldn't answer. He said something like, father and son both as blind as bats. How could he have known Morzan if Morzan had never been to Ellesmera??? I think Eragon's father is Brom. Or someone other than Morzan.

LOL! I don't think back then they knew what a divorce was. Besides I do not remember, pls correct me if I am wrong, anywhere in the book saying that Morzan got to marry Selena. I was under the impression that the book says that they met in a small village, Morzan showed her some kindness and
when Morzan left the village, she accompanied him, or something around those lines.
If you really want to go crazy with excitement, bo to the topic of: "Son and father alike, both as blind as bats." The connection made me dizzy with excitement.

well, Galbatorix may have forced Murtagh to, in the ancient lang, swear to trick Eragon into believing him that Morzan his dad.

I really don't think so; to trick someone is to lie, so he wouldn't have been able to say it using the Ancient Language.
At least that what I think!

hmm, Glaby could have led Murtagh to believe that it was the same selena, but it was a different selena.

i did, and she was an elf, she could have gotten there anyway. and then they probally weren't a bunch of guys with swords standing on dragons and slauthering you for touching there stupid rock. its not a matter of royalty, (as sum people that are peasants could rule better, aka, roran....) but a matter of letting them keep an ailiannce, even dragon riders can't keep of hoards of elves.

Maybe he was a distant relative of Selena. For all we know, maybe Brom isn't Eragon's father. Maybe Brom had a brother and maybe that brother is Eragon's father. Maybe OROMIS is Eragon's father!!!

Brom ain't elf. and they probally wouldn't let you teach your brother. (oromis was broms teacher)

I wasn't implying that Brom was an elf. I said that maybe Brom had a brother that was Eragon's father. Then I said that maybe Oromis was his father. Anyway, Brom came from a remote village, his mom wouldn't have been able to have him with an elf. Not to mention that his village was very superstitous, so she might have figured the baby would be disfigured or evil or something. No, I was definitely not implying that Oromis was Brom's brother. Please don't be offended if I sound stuck up or something.

well... its a good idea that maybe oromis was his brother but my brother said that selena was a dragon rider too and theres a possibility that really brom's the father of eragon because brom was a dragon rider and a student of oromis (which cancels the brom-oromis relationship). they may have loved each other first but morzan liked selena and threatened them so that they would seperate but they just didnt know that someday they could meet once again and fall in love AGAIN and had eragon.... any chance???

Then what happened to Selena's dragon? Surely Morzan would have forced her to become a member of the Forsworn if she had been a Dragon Rider. Not to mention all of Carvahall would have known that she was a Rider and they wouldn't have allowed Eragon to lift anything heavier than a pencil. Remember, Dragon Riders were very respected during their time. I'm sure their children were treated the same way in case they became Dragon Riders.

_arYa_ , I'm sure her family ( Garrow and Marian) would have known if she was a Dragon Rider. They would have been so proud they would have... who knows what they would have done. Besides, Selena had to have been born after the fall of the Riders. Remember, Eragon was sad when he learned that Arya had been born one year after the Fall. He thought to himself something along these lines," A year aftter the Fall ! That was 100 yrs. ago!" Remember folks, only a speculation amongst thousands of others.

What do you mean? Did you take up a whole page? Sorry, but I just got up ( in the place where I live it's 10:41 a.m., don't make me angry) and I don't feel like looking myself.

K then..............
here it goes
Selena left to protect Eragon because she had mat angela and she perdicted her future because solembum talked with her and she was told to run away and give her child to garrow and name him eragon after hte first rider. Selena also ran away because she wanted to protect eragon from morzans wrath. That way he woudnt have a scar like murtag

You ppl are still not addressing a question I posed earlier. What happened to Selena's dragon if she was a Rider? There could have been four eggs, but one hatched for her... Oh, man!! I'm contradicting MYSELF!! This topic is driving me insane.
