There's no trick, it's purely logical. (and oh, when I say NEXT TO, it probably on the right and probably on the left.. Who knows..)

Hobbs knew that Porter was lying because Porter said he saw Sam kick the small stool. If he had been looking from the driveway up to the attic, he would never have been able to see a small stool on the floor. The house was 3 stories high!!!

didnt get time to post and what i was going to say was that the stool was upside down by the door which means that Sam did not kick the stool it was set there or kicked by someone else
