War in the Skies
I've been writing a story, and i decided that, now that it's really going somewhere, i'll post it. I'm going to post the chapters one every day or two. Here's the first chapter, tell me how you like it!
Chapter 1
After ages of endless waiting, the bell finally rang. Jenna jumped up, crammed her books into her bag, and dashed out the door, then slowed down, working her way through the crowd of kids fetching stuff from their lockers, making plans, and just trying to get through the crowd and outside as fast as possible. She finally got out and breathed deeply, gazing up at the sun and banishing the thoughts of algebra whirling through her mind. “Jenna!” She heard Kari call to her. “Mena says to meet at her house at six.” “I’ll be there.” Jenna replied, mentally rescheduling her plans to do her science homework after dinner. The three girls met at least twice a week. They’d never really decided to be friends, it was just that since all three of them were loners, they’d naturally gravitated toward each other. Kari was a loner because she was the kind of girl who always made mistakes when she was trying to help. Well-meaning, but that didn’t matter to the popular girls. Mena: If something ever caught her eye, she wouldn’t leave it alone, even if it was just an ordinary pebble. She’d pick it up and wonder what secrets it held. She was really friendly and entertaining, with her wild stories, but that didn’t matter to the popular girls. And as for Jenna…. Everyone thought she was crazy, and sometimes Jenna wondered if everyone was right. She would sometimes see glowing, colored lights that no one else could see, and occasionally there were animals no one else saw. She couldn’t always tell what these animals were. Very, very occasionally, there were even people, usually shorter than normal. When Jenna pointed these things out, even her two friends gave her odd looks. Besides these occasional “delusions,” there was really nothing at all wrong with her. But that didn’t matter to the popular girls. Of course, they were a few other loners, but they kept to themselves. Most of the kids tried to not become loners. In high school, Jenna thought as she walked toward the bus, All the power seems to belong to the popular girls. There were a few other loners, but they were perfectly content to keep to themselves. Jenna reflexively stepped into the line of people cramming into the bus, then stopped, noticing the traffic jam. Home was only a couple miles. With all this traffic, it’d be faster to walk. She crossed the street and sighed. She didn’t like walking through New York, even when it was faster. Too noisy.
Suddenly, she felt herself being dragged. So this is why Mom always wants me to take the bus, Jenna thought as she kicked-or rather, tried to kick. It was odd. It wasn’t like someone had grabbed her arm, it was as if someone had slid their hands underneath her shoes and was now dragging her feet, but that was impossible. She glanced down and saw that her feet were surrounded by a dark fog, one of those glowing, colored lights that only she could see-Only, this wasn’t a light. It was more like a void. She’d seen the lights in lots of colors-mostly nondescript browns in all shades-but she’d never seen one so black. In the instant she saw it, she knew that whatever it was, it was the thing dragging her along. She also knew that everything else she’d seen over her fourteen years-The lights, the weird animals, the handful of also weird people-None of it was a delusion. The dark thing was dragging her into an alley. Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, the dragging stopped and the dark smog disappeared, so abruptly that Jenna stumbled and fell. Then she felt a hand grab her arm and yank her to her feet. She didn’t know why this person had grabbed her, but she was pretty sure she didn’t want to go wherever she was being taken. Her feet were free. So now she could kick, and she did. As she did so, she saw that her attacker was a man in a long, very old-fashioned black cloak. For once glad that she hadn’t quit her martial arts class, Jenna kicked and pummeled until a black ropey thing snaked out of the man’s hand and curled around her, pinning her arms to her sides. This was too much. Jenna lost all control. “LET ME GO!” She said, a strange, wild feeling suddenly welling up in her, and as she shouted, she felt as if she were pouring her concentration into her words. Suddenly, there was a blinding flash of light, Jenna felt very tired, and the black rope around her faded away. As she turned to run, Jenna noticed there was a white, glowing, light reaching out to the man in the cloak. The same white light also surrounded Jenna.

Re: War in the Skies
Yay! Something that's got nothing to do with Eragon!
Sounds pretty interesting. I'd like to read more. It sped up heaps at the end, not a bad thing though. It seemed odd that you named two of them Jenna and Mena which rhymes though.
Please continue =]

Re: War in the Skies
Kay, here's the next chapter!
Chapter 2
In spite of her sudden exhaustion, Jenna ran pell-mell through the streets, filled with certainty that the man in the cloak was following her. When her energy finally ran out, she was several miles-and several hours-away. Eight hours, she thought, glancing at her watch. Eleven o’clock. Her parents would probably have called the police. They probably wouldn’t find her. The police were always busy in New York, they wouldn’t be too surprised by one lost girl. It wasn’t like there was anything about her that made her stood out, she thought. No one would notice her unless they were looking for a fourteen-year old girl with short blonde hair and blue eyes. Not that there weren’t a thousand other girls in New York that fit that description. Anyway, they would only be looking near the school and her home, while she was-She glanced around. She was in Battery Park, she realized. She was leaning against the fence around one of the enclosures of trees. Absentmindedly, she glanced up at the trees above her head-Then stared, blinked, rubbed her eyes, and blinked again. She wondered if the girl sitting in the tree was another one of those things only she could see, but she looked perfectly normal, except that normal girls didn’t sit in trees that had a fence around them that was obviously telling you DO NOT TOUCH THE TREES. Jenna glanced around, then looked back at the girl. There weren’t many people around, but Jenna would have thought someone would object to the girl sitting in the tree. The girl looked just as astonished as Jenna felt. The girl stared at Jenna for a few moments. Jenna stared back. Then the strange girl slid down the trunk of the tree and walked over to Jenna. “How can you see me?” She hissed under her breath. Jenna blinked, confused. So apparently she was one of the things only she could see… But the things never looked normal, and this girl didn’t look all that odd. She looked a little older than Jenna. She was wearing jeans and a purple t-shirt. She had long, black hair and brown eyes. She looked like a perfectly normal teenage girl-though she was surrounded by a faint, almost unnoticeable, pale violet glow. “Am I not supposed to see you?” Jenna asked in confusion. The girl looked exasperated. “Of course not! I put an invisibility spell on myself. Do you think I would have been sitting in the tree otherwise? Someone would have objected.” Jenna just stared. Her head was whirling. Finally, in a faint voice, she managed, “I have no idea what you’re talking about, but do you think you could explain something to me?” The girl looked even more annoyed, then she sighed and shrugged. “This sounds like a long conversation. Come on.” Then, after murmuring something under her breath, which Jenna guessed was an “Invisibility spell,” the girl helped Jenna over the fence and into the tree she’d been sitting in when Jenna first saw her. As she tried to figure out how to sit down in a tree, Jenna noticed a backpack sitting in a fork between two branches. After they had both settled themselves, the girl said, “My name’s Maia. And you are?” “My name is Jenna.” “Okay, Jenna. Why do you think I can explain something to you?” And so Jenna launched into an account of everything that had happened since she had left the school, then had to backtrack, realizing she had to explain about the weird things she saw. When she was finished, for a few moments Maia just watched her thoughtfully, digesting the information. Then she said: “I guess I can explain some of this. To start with, you have second sight. That explains all the weird things you’ve seen, and how you saw through my invisibility spell. The man who attacked you was obviously a magician, and you accidently used magic to-“ Jenna cut in. “You’re saying that magic is real?!?” “Yes.” For a moment, Maia was silent, allowing this to sink in, then she continued with her analysis. “As I was saying, you accidently used magic to escape. As for why he attacked you, I have no idea. But before you try to figure that out, you should get out of here. I guess I’ll have to go with you, since you obviously have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into. If you have someone with pure black aura after you, the best thing to do is to take the nearest escape route, assess the situation, then do something about it. Or just keep running.” “Why?” “You can make a good guess at a person’s personality by the color of their aura, and pure black is extremely bad.” “Where are we going?” “I have no idea. Probably out of the country.” Jenna’s jaw dropped. “Out of the country? But what about school? What about my parents? What about my life?” “I think your parents would rather you returned in a few days, weeks, who knows how long, than that you not return at all.” Jenna frowned, thinking about this. “How are we leaving?” “We’re taking a leygate.”

Re: War in the Skies
It's pronounced My-ya. I might change that. She wasn't actually sprinting for eight hours, just running. I guess i should change that.

Re: War in the Skies
Chapter 3
As Maia explained, a leygate was a place where two or more ley lines met. Ley lines were rivers of power that flowed all over the world. To travel on a ley line, you infused the gate with power, went through the gate, then stepped into whichever ley line you wanted to travel on. “Getting on the ley line is easy,” She said, “It’s getting off that’s the problem.” “Why?” “See, the ley lines travel at about ten miles a second, and they never stop. So when you want to get off, you simply jump off when you see land, even though the land is flashing by so fast you can travel over a smallish country in ten seconds. Ley lines aren’t something you use when you’re trying to get to somewhere, they’re something you use when you’re trying to get away from somewhere. “ “So… When we get off, we’ll really have no idea where we are? What if we land in the middle of the ocean? Or on top of a sky scraper?” “Don’t worry. I’ve been traveling on ley lines for years. But if you’re really worried about it, I’ll put a floatation-insulation spell around us. That way, if we do fall into the ocean-which we won’t-we won’t drown or freeze. Then I can teleport to the nearest land. And I always use some protection spells when I’m traveling by ley lines, just in case I do land on top of a skyscraper.” Jenna still felt worried. “Okay. So where’s the leygate?” “Not very far. We’ll sleep here, then in the morning we’ll go to liberty island.”
The next morning, Maia woke Jenna up as the sun was rising. While they walked to the ferry terminal, Maia explained that leygates emanated a since of power, and so they became places of worship, or people built important buildings on them, things like that. At any really important place, there was almost always a leygate. After a few minutes, they arrived at the ferry terminal. Maia examined the schedule, then the boats, then pointed to one of the ferries. “We’re taking that one.” “How are we going to get tickets? I don’t have any money.” “We’re not. We’re going to stow away.” Jenna thought about that. It would probably be very easy to stow away, as they were both invisible. But still, she felt nervous as they walked up the ramp into the bright, pristine ship. She kept expecting someone to yell, “Hey! Where’s your tickets?” But no one did, naturally, and they got on the ship without incident. They settled onto a stack of crates, Maia carefully putting her backpack on the ground beside her. Jenna quickly settled into the ship’s gentle rocking. As she gazed over the white railing down at the waves, Jenna said, “So how does magic work, anyway?” Maia paused, thinking about how to respond. “Well, most people think that magic is something that you have, but you don’t. You have aura. Everyone has aura, but very few people know how to use it. To use magic, you simply say what you want to happen-it doesn’t have to be out loud, but if you just say it in your head, the spell can get scrambled up with other things-and you infuse the words with your aura. Your aura acts as a translator, so the magic understands what you want. You have to say exactly what you want, because you’ll get exactly what you ask for, no more and no less. The purer your aura is, the easier it is to concentrate it.” At this, she stopped. “Do you know what color your aura is?” Jenna blinked. “No idea.” Maia reached out, a pale lavender light flickering from her hand, and touched Jenna’s shoulder. For a moment, Jenna was surrounded by a white light-the same light she’d seen when running from the alley. Maia’s eyes widened. “Pure white.” She murmured to herself. Then, out loud she said, “You have a pure white aura. I’ve never seen a pure aura.” She started to speak again, but Jenna interrupted. “So your aura is pale lavender?” Maia looked startled. “Yes. You’re observant.” Then she continued with her explanation. “The more complicated or difficult the spell, the more you have to concentrate. So the purer your aura, the better you are at magic, which means you should be beyond exceptional. The more you concentrate your aura, the more it wears you out. There are also a few very basic spells you can do without actually using magic-just making lights or simple shields, things like that, things you can create with only your aura and your imagination. I guess I’ve covered everything you need to know. Oh! One more thing.” She continued speaking as she began rummaging through her pockets. “If there’s a long spell you think you’ll need in a hurry, or a spell that you use a lot, you can say the spell and, instead of concentrating on your aura, concentrate on an object. Like this.” She pulled a big, old, foreign coin out of her pocket. “The words will go into the object instead of turning into a spell, and you can concentrate your aura on the object, and do the spell without having to say it. Oh, look! We’re here.” Jenna glanced up and saw a small island covered in trees, paths, a cluster of buildings at one end and, of course, the statue of liberty. They had arrived at liberty island.

Re: War in the Skies
Chapter 4
Maia and Jenna stepped off the boat onto a dock and began walking toward the statue of liberty. In about five minutes, they were at the base of the platform. “Okay, so how do we do this?” “First I’m going to teleport us up there. We need to get all the way to the top.” Maia said the spell. There was a swirl of lavender light, and when it dissipated they were standing between the statue of liberty’s feet. In front of them, there was a shimmering outline of a door. Jenna felt a weird humming feeling emanating from it. Her gaze locked on that, and her heart began to beat faster. “Can you feel the door?” Maia asked. “Yeah. See it, too.” “Right. I guess your second sight would do that. This is a good time for you to practice concentrating your aura. I could probably open the leygate by myself, but it’d be difficult. It’s a lot easier with two. Concentrate on your aura and tell it to go to the leygate.” Jenna closed her eyes, concentrating. She thought about the white light she’d seen in the alley and again on the boat, when Maia had brought it to life-her aura. As she thought about this, she felt something strange and wild deep inside of her. She tried to catch the feeling, but it eluded her. She took a deep breath and instead concentrated on the feeling, trying to will it to go to the leygate. Nothing happened. Jenna frowned. Then she looked at it from a different angle. It is a part of me, not something separate, she told herself. Then she tried again. She pushed. She felt a strang flare inside of her, then opened her eyes and saw the leygate flash briefly white. Then it flashed again, in lavender. Suddenly, the doorway looked a lot more stable than it had before. “Good. You’re a fast learner. Come on.” Maia reached over and grabbed Jenna’s hand. “Don’t let go. After we step into the doorway, there’ll be at least two ley lines. They’ll look like rivers of light. We’ll step into one, and after that the only way to get out is to jump. When I yank on your hand, jump out of the ley line. Don’t let go of me. Are you ready?” “Of course I’m not ready. But if we wait till I’m ready, we’ll never go. Let’s do it.” The two girls stepped together into the doorway and suddenly, she saw four ley lines. They were standing exactly where the four lines intersected, caught in the current. The power emanating from them was staggering. They looked like light might look if you could somehow remove all impurities and have only pure, untainted light. Everything else had gone sort of dim in comparism to the ley lines. Even Maia paused after stepping through the doorway, slightly awed in spite of the fact that this wasn’t the first time she’d used the ley lines. Then she was back in action. “Come on. It doesn’t really matter which one we take, so let’s take this one.” Maia tugged at Jenna’s hand and Jenna, still a little dazed, stepped after her out of the intersection and into one of the ley lines. Which did not help her confusion. The instant she stepped into the ley line, everything was moving along in a blur. For about two seconds, there was a lot of gray and green. After that it was just a blur of blue, endlessly stretching in all directions. For about a minute and a half, they traveled across the Atlantic ocean. Then it was more gray and green. “Jump!” Maia yelled, yanking on Jenna’s hand. They jumped. They landed in a field of grass and wildflowers with a few birch trees off to the side. Even though it’d been early morning when they left, it now looked like noon. Jenna got up carefully, looking around. “Okay…. That was… Interesting.” She glanced over at Maia, then scrutinized her more carefully. Something seemed off. It was like looking at someone who’d just gotten glasses or had their hair cut, something was off. Then she hit it. The lavender glow was gone. “Did you drop the invisibility spell?” Maia blinked, looking startled. “I guess it must have somehow slipped away. Doesn’t really matter, though. No one’s around.” “Actually, you’re wrong about that.” Both the girls whirled around at the unfamiliar voice.

Re: War in the Skies
*Shrug* I don't have everything really planned out, and at this point it's just not coming as smoothly as it was. The first four chapters were easy. Really easy. I guess it was just saving up all the difficult bits for now.

The newcomer was a tall woman, wearing jeans and a beige coat that concealed most of her figure. She had green eyes and long, wild, flaming red hair. “I saw you jump off the ley line. Unless you weren’t on a ley line. I’m assuming you were.” She said in a conversational tone. Maia watched her very cautiously, like a wild animal meeting another of its kind. Her hands glowed faintly violet, as if she were preparing to use magic. “Who are you?” The woman’s expression was completely different. She looked completely at ease. Jenna didn’t know what to think of this woman. “To tell you who I am would take a long time,” The woman said, “But my name is Gráinne Ní Mháille. You may have heard of me as Grace O’Malley.” Jenna frowned, puzzled. That name rang a bell. Then a memory popped into her head: Sitting in her history class while her history teacher droned on and on about Ireland. Why had she heard that name in history class? Then she remembered. “I think I’ve heard of you. But-” Jenna paused, trying to decide how to phrase her thoughts. “But you thought I died for centuries ago?” Grace O’Malley finished the sentence for her. Jenna nodded, still baffled. Grace O’Malley flashed a brief, mischievous grin. “Well, yes, I was supposed to have died centuries ago. But, although everyone assumed my legal mother was my biological mother, that wasn’t actually the case. My real mother was an Aloja, a water-woman. Aloja live in the water, and they can live for thousands of years. After I was born, my real mother disappeared. As few people as possible were supposed to know about it, but naturally a few servants had some vague suspicions. By asking lots of questions and listening behind doors, I eventually pieced together the truth. Eventually, I had to fake my death, of course.” Grace cocked her head thoughtfully and gave the two girls a thoughtful glance. “Since you came on a ley line, you probably don’t have any plans for where to go. Would you like to come stay with me until you decide what to do next?” Jenna glanced at Maia, waiting for her decision. Maia pursed her lips doubtfully, then shrugged, a bit reluctantly. “Sure.” “Follow me, then.” Grace O’Malley turned around and began walking away. As they followed her, Maia said out of the corner of her mouth, “But be careful.” As they followed her, Jenna called out, “Um-Mrs. O’Malley-“ “Grace. Call me Grace.” Grace O’Malley interrupted. “Grace, then. Are we in Ireland?” “You’re in North Ireland, deep in the Mourne mountains.” Grace said, nimbly ducking under a branch. She seemed to move so easily. Even Maia moved over the rough plains easily enough, while Jenna seemed to stumble over everything stumblable, and it didn’t help that Grace also moved so quickly. Fortunately, they only had to go a little ways before they came to a small house. It was a very small, square structure, all painted white. They went inside. The building was about six by four yards, and consisted of only one room. The back wall was mostly cupboards, shelves, counters and such. In the right wall was a fireplace, and built into the front left corner was a bed. In the middle of the room was a table, and scattered around were three chairs. To the left there was a window, and up against the wall was a chest. “Do you use any electricity?” Jenna asked. “Sometimes. I have a generator for the very little I use. Sit down,” Said Grace, waving toward the chairs. Jenna and Maia sat down while Grace bustled about, preparing food. “So, what were you doing on the ley lines?” Maia cocked her head for a moment, thinking, then gave a brief explanation of what had happened, with Jenna occasionally jumping in to add things while Grace dumped various ingredients into a pot over the fire, then eventually sat down. When Maia was done, Grace was staring into the distance, thinking. Then she spoke. “You need to figure out who it was that attacked you, Jenna.” She got up, went to the shelves and grabbed a laptop. She plugged in the power cord to something in one of the cupboards, then she paused, turning to Maia. “How much have you explained to her?” Maia shrugged. “I haven’t really got around to that, I guess. I’ve just explained the basics of how to use magic.” Grace turned back to Jenna. “Before I tell you anything else, I should give you an explanation of the world you have just been plunged into.” “There are many different races of sentient being in this world. There are the humans, who are really the youngest of races, and The Ancients, a group of many different and varied races who have been here long before humans came to the earth. Then there is the race which humans call gods. They are not really gods, as we use the word. But each god does have immense power. They each have their own area in which they are especially powerful. But they are not invincible. They can be killed, and many of them have been. Also, humans can become immortal. There are various ways a human can become immortal. There are a few spells, and a few of the gods have the ability to grant immortality. Ghosts exist, too, though how they exist is a rather complicated story. Now, I believe that’s all I need to explain to you at the moment.” Grace glanced toward the pot over the fire. “I think that’s ready. Help yourselves while I see if can find out who it was who attacked Jenna.”

Re: War in the Skies
Sounds good. A little random they'd end up in Ireland by going through all this portals and ending up with a complete stranger though.
