I think Galbatorix will die no duh but mabye Eragon spares Murtagh because their brothers and Eragon wants to break the oaths of Galbatorix that he made murtag swear

most likly he will spare Murtagh because if he kills galbatorix he might be set free of the spells, im talk about eragon killing galbatorix

yea i mean at thr end of eldest he says to eragon that they r brothers, and even though sometimes i want to kill my sister i spare her life becasue i love her a lil.

Remember, Murtagh said there was no way to break a oath in the ancient language? WRONG!!!! Ormis (SP) said there are ways to break a spell, IT CAN BE DONE BY ANYONE, but for it to be most effective the spell caster has to say it. OR something like that.

Yes, but forget that wrong!!! Think of all the good he's done for the Varden, he helped them beat the urgals. Then think of what he's done for Eragon. 1 Saved him from the Raz'zac. 2 Helped him find the Varden. 3 Saved his life more than once, and MANY MORE.

What if, for the worst scenario -- murtagh INDEED worked for galbatorix since the beginning? That means it wasn't coinsidence eragon and brom met murtagh back on empire ( i forgot where), it's a scenario from galbatorix that murtagh earn their trust and friendship, and then betrayed them.

I mean, after the burning plain war, murtagh then could pretend he betrayed galbatorix and join Eragon AGAIN. At the time beeing eragon should have convinced murtagh is a victim and an ally. So, Murtagh could attack the varden from inside.. And if true Nasuada has a feeling for him, he could use that to gain information (murtagh built us an opinion that he liked nasuada, in the 1st book).

Again, the worst is if he KILL nasuada after that so the varden lose a leader and screw any plan they posibly have. WOW!!! THat would be a Brilliant thing galbatorix planned since forever!! Anyway, if a father was bad, geneticaly it could have passed to the descendants. If not eragon, it must have been murtagh inherit the cruelty and double-crossed-thing. Make sense, eh??

i hope Murtagh is spared, i mean he might be evil now but he can be changed.I think Galbatorix is making him do everything hes doing against his will and remeber he let Eragon live at the end of Eldest so he oviously wants him to stay alive!

I think Murtagh will be freed of his bonds and together Eragon and him can defeat Galbatorix.

I think Eragon will spare him (I hope he does) but they'll still have another climactic battle.

Galbatorix didn't plan things on a short-term but long-term. If durza took eragon, galbatorix's battle versus the varden wouldn't be stopped just by that. He wont have a chance to defeat them, besides, he has many enemy like king Orrin, islanzadi, hrothgar, ajihad. Remember, it was murtagh who accompanied ajihad through the tunnel and somehow (i suppose) he helped clear the way for the urgals to attacked ajihad (we remember eragon thought it was impossible there were no warning about the urgals sudden attack)

In this whole scenario, galbatorix will earn the varden and elf's trust through murtagh (since eragon trust him, the elves need to trust him also).

well.. from thousand of Eragon readers there must be some who doesn't fond murtagh.. The three of us are example I don't really like the character because he's dark and gloom and apparently so many things suspicious about him--

First, remember when Eragon thought like "why didn't sentries in the tunnels warn us of the urgals, they shouln't have been able to trail Ajihad's group without being noticed." and i started to think that maybe it's murtagh did it all the way long. SINCE THE BEGINNING this was all a plot!

Second, why did Thorn just hatch for him now? Not since the beginning when he's still in the Castle and still have faith on Galbatorix (literally, remember his story to eragon)?? He's been in the empire since forever! i find this suspicious too.

Third, why did he hidden the truth to Eragon that his mother was Selena (despite whether their father was morzan or not)--> therefore in their journey they was able to talked not just as friends but as brothers too! It doesn't make sense that in his loneliness and desperation of beeing charged by the empire, Murtagh gave away the chances to be united to his brother.

Fourth, in the battle on burning plains murtagh himself admit that he enjoyed learning darkest magics from galbatorix and too he said, elves are coward. Oath is i understand, but such saying means from himself, not even galbatorix can make him say bad words to eragon!!

Fifth,

then actually Murtagh didn't need to act so sarcastic at the battle of burning plains he should tried to find a way to break the spell he could asked eragon for help, that is IF he's really mean to be good.

Murtagh could have killed eragon, but he obviously didn't want to. He swore to TRY and kill eragon, which he did by fighting him, but he never said he wouldn't spare him.

In my opinion he was just playing "macho" in this fight

Actually, I think the orders were to capture Eragon and Saphira alive and to take them to Galbatorix.
I have very mixed feelings for Murtagh. I try to picture my 3 yr grand-daughter being hurt like he was by his father and a rage so deep swells inside me (it falls in the category of beyond foolishness as it's just a story), I think of someone trying to keep me away from my mother and again I become furious, and so on.
Then I rememeber how he viciously killed Torkenbrand; I recall how he says that no one man's life is more important than his own; again at the battle he is like power crazed-he claims to be more powerful than Morzan, he ridiculizes Brom and the elves; without a second thought he murders Hrothgar and even tells Eragon that only Galbatorix could beat him.

Like I said before, he is way beyond redemption and I hope he dies. Yes, now i'm sure I feel he should die and it should be Orik the one to kill him, so that at least Orik can have his revenge.

ok. first we know what orimis tought eragon. but why would galby teach murtagh that?? he doesn't want to lose his powers over him. now he has a dragon rider he can have do things so he can sit and hide in his castle.
