graphic cards
i need help with something, what can i compare an ATI HD3650 too?
because im getting a new pc and its specs are 3-4gb RAM 2.4 ghz quadcore (cpu) ATI HD3650
i wanted an nvidia geforce 8800 or higher but i couldnt find one priced at what i wanted it to be i heard this graphics card is compared to nvidia geforce 8600gt which is a pretty good card IMO (i saw a video of it running crysis and it was sick) so is that true? if not what is it compared too?

Re: graphic cards
There are a few kinds of GT series.
GT, GTS, and GTX
I run an 8800 GTS and it's quite nice, the 8600 GTX would push out the same power as an 8800 GTS.
The 8800 GTS can only run crysis on medium at great FPS, but on High it can run it, but there are noticable frame stutters. An 8600 Gt, or GTS would run it on medium for sure. Which is saying a lot, Crysis on medium looks very much so Nextgen

Graphics Card..
Im gonna get a better graphics card for my computer, because honestly mine sucks. My computer was cheap when I bought it new. $500 from Bestbuy, it was on sale at the time I believe. So anyways it only had 512mb memory so I bumped that up to 2 gigs. But since I play WoW, the games demands alot and im really laggy most of the time and sometimes my screen goes black then comes back on while playing. Usually only does this when ALOT of animation is going on. Like say in a dungeon or raids where multiple players doing alot of stuff on my screen at once. ANYWAYS. I need a second opinion on what kind I should get.
Computer Stats:
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) System Manufacturer: Gateway System Model: M-6309 BIOS: Rev 1.0 Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T2330 @ 1.60GHz (2 CPUs), ~1.6 GHz Memory: 2038MB RAM
EDIT: Forgot to add my current Display Device. Name: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family Manufacurer: Intel Corporation (Obviously.) Chip Type: Same as name. DAC Type: Internal Approx Total Memory 358 MB
I just hope theres at least another computer geek. lol

Re: Graphics Card..
It depends how good of a graphics card you want. Do you want to play games like WoW only? Or do you want the capacity to play insanely intense graphical games such as Crysis?

Re: Graphics Card..
Currently just WoW only. I just want fps better. Also like I said, if too much animation of players/spells/attacks ect.. is going on, it wont load all of it and my screen goes black for a few seconds. Especially in raids its really laggy.

Re: Graphics Card..
Then like Louis a Nvidia GEFORCE 5200 or 5500 should do perfectly.
I run games with incredibly high graphic requirements so I used an 8800 GTX. You wouldn't need that though.
a 5 series should be good

Re: Graphics Card..
Well I bought myself a new laptop over the winter break to replace my old which had reached a point where I would put more repair time on it then I would get working time.
Turion X2 64 RM-70 2.0Ghz 4 GB Ram 320 GB Hard Drive Radeon HD 3200 Dedicated 256MB with up to 1918MB with the shared. Dual Boot: Fedora Linux 10 64bit & Vista Premium 64bit
It's quite good, the only problem is that there still a couple of issues with the 64 bit version of Fedora.

Geez, I felt stupid a while back. I completely forgot that for a laptop the graphics card is built into the motherboard so it cant be changed out. So basically if I want a better one, got to get a new computer lol...

I'm in the same boat as you, Daidrea. I've got an Intel GMA, which is a piece of junk. The trouble is that it is nearly impossible to upgrade notebooks...

Re: Graphics Card..
No, all you have to do is find the piece, unsolder it, resoder it. Find a new laptop shell that fits the new hardware, disconnect the screen. Find a new one...create a plastic shell to hold the new one, screw it on to the new laptop shell. Then align the old keyboard with the new shell.
It's truly an effortless process.

That's my kind of work. Seems like something I would do if I only had the required equipment

Which is hillarious because you could probably buy a new laptop with a better graphics card for cheaper than what all the parts and time would cost you.

Re: Graphics Card..
My desktop computer will be out of commission for at least a week at the minimium. Seems like my 5200 decided to catch on fire and I don't have my spare GForce 2 400 with me so I cannot test for any more damage.
I've been testing blind since I cannot hook up on a monitor. Seems like I might have a memory module which might have been affected also. One chance there's the debugging beeps available.
If the motherboard has not been damaged I will need to find a new permanent video card for it. The problem is that it only uses AGP cards so I will need to do a bit of hunting down.
This machine might be 7 years old, but it had the top pentium 4 back then and it still runs xp, fedora and vista really well.

you are right about the Linux and specs though, if you have garbage specs and cant use Vista. Linux is defiinitely for you.

But if you do have the specs and run linux you are going to have an amazing machine.
The fedora boot screen on more recent machines
