Re: 1984
WELL, it's hard for me to talk about this book without breaking the rules on political discussion *makes a pleading look at teh modz to change it*.
Anyway, I have to say that 1984 was one of the most depressing books I ever read, but that is not actually a bad thing because Orwell intended it too be that way. It was more or less depicting one of the worst case scenarios regarding police states. (Due to the rules I cannot continue down this train of thought).
Anyway, 1984 is also one of the best written books I've ever read. If any of you ever want to write a horrific torture scene, read the scene in Room 101. It will most likely scar you for life, but at the same time you have got to agree that Orwell's descriptive talent makes him one of the best authors of the 20th Century.
Anyway guys, if you did not get the message before: READ 1984! It's one of the best books you will ever read.

I think an exception can be made, as it's hard to discuss the novel without speaking about the politics. I'm interested in your train.

Re: 1984
Well this reply is several months overdue:
Orwell wrote 1984 in 1949, four years after the second world war. There was a very real threat to freedom in Europe at the time. Britain's economy was in tatters, Russia had taken over half of Europe. Relations between the east and west were cordial, but becoming significantly more tense. Also communism was on the rise in most European countries, which brought them under the growing influence of Russia. (This growth was halted in 1968 by the Soviet response to the Prague Spring).
In any case, the complex political system in the late 1940s was what prompted Orwell to write 1984. More or less, it shows how bad things can get in a police state. In the world of 1984, what the Party says is the truth. You have no freedom to think independently and you have no freedom to act independently. It was a large wakeup call to the people of Europe and even the US not to vote for extreme left/right wing parties and not to trust their politicians to put their freedom first.
In the world of 1984, the people were safe from outside invasion, but they were not happy in that safety. Their freedom was sacrificed for national security. This theme is relevant today in places like the US and Britain.

Re: 1984
The book is all about trying to make the perfect Utopian society. In English we read Anthem and watched Gattica and another movie whose name I don't remember that all dealt with that.

It's actually part of a greater genre known as Dystopian Fiction. It's similar to ''Brave New World'' in that respect. Utopian Fiction is set in an ''ideal world.'' Dystpian fiction is set in a nightmarish world. Anyone who thinks that 1984 was about trying to make an ideal world is seriously deranged. The architects of the society cared nothing for the people - all they cared about was power.

Re: 1984
The whole scenario really is nightmarish, imagine a world like that where you could be striving to succeed and think you can beat these greater powers. but the reality is..you cant and its also scary how that we could have been in a situation like that, its not all that far fetched. Books are always open to discussion and what people believe could be the meaning behind it, if anyone else on here read I'd be interested in reading your views on this

Re: 1984
Twas room 101 I finally read 1984 in Sci-Fi and adored it. Orwell was trully amazing at writing, must admit. It is such a well thought-out book and very realistic. Sadly that could happen. Let's just work to make sure it doesn't.
