Mind hurting question...
So today I realized something and it has hurt my head. Lets see if I can phrase the question to make sense. So if we are omnivores and than cows are herbivores, and wolves are carnivores (the animal part doesn't matter, just using as example) and plants are plants and meat is meat. Well we have plants that are also carnivores, like the Rufus Fly catcher (I think that's what it is called.) Well the cows eat that plant, would that make them carnivores because the plant was a carnivore itself, or is it still an herbivore because the plant is still a plant? Well how can that be? Because Wolves eat meat and they ARE carnivores. So since the plant is a carnivore, and the cow ate it...how does that work? My dad thought this was a rather good question. Sorry if it doesn't make sense and opinions are very welcome.

Re: Mind hurting question...
umm... personally I don't think that the plant is even a carnivore because it eats flies. it's still a plant. besides, I think that the plant just gets nutrients from the fly because of the bad soil it's on, not really eating the fly, but that's just what I think. EDIT: (I think it's called the venus flytrap.)

Re: Mind hurting question...
Either way it's still a carnivore because (though I wouldn't exactly consider it meat) it still eats meat. They eat other things and well and there are a variety of other plants as well that eat bigger things. I just don't get it. That name sounds right, sort of.

Re: Mind hurting question...
in that case, I would still think that the cow is an herbivore because it ate a plant, carnivore or no carnivore.

Re: Mind hurting question...
Meat eating flower actually dont eat their victims. Flowers doesnt have any muscles so at worse all they can do is shut their "mouths" which actualy take some time and wait until the food getts rotten and useable. On the other hand wolves and so prefer fresh meat I just hope I'm not completely off toppic

Re: Mind hurting question...
I don't think the words herbivore and carnivore strictly specify all of what they eat. I'm pretty sure that it just specifies something like 90% of their diet- I mean wolves sometimes eat berries and stuff in the winter if they can't find any other food, but that doesn't make them omnivores, because for the most part they still eat meat.
Anyway, animals with diets consisting mainly of insects are called insectivores, not carnivores.

Re: Mind hurting question...
I was going to say exactly what Firetongue said. Venus Flytraps eat more than just flys. They eat all different kinds of insects and arachnids. And even if a cow happened to eat a Venus Flytrap (I think that would be unlikely) Its still just eating a plant, its not eating the actual insect.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense, but it still hurts my mind to think about it. I can see how that works, but...I don't know, maybe I should ask my grandpa.

I agree with Firetongue too. Besides even if a cow does eat a Venus Fly Trap, its still eating a plant. You are judged by what you eat, not because of what your food eats.

Basically producers are plants, primary consumers eat producers, secondary consumers eat primary consumers and sometimes producers, tertiary consumers eat secondary consumers, sometime primary consumers and sometime producers, and so it goes on...

Re: Mind hurting question...
it doesnt really matter.. because that is the plants diet.. the plant "eats" flies.. when the cow eats the plant it is not directly eating the "meat" that the plant uses to get nutrients..so the cow is still an herbavour [sp?!] and it does not matter what the heck its food ate..
Does that help anybody? since the food chain was just confusing as i dont know what.

Re: Mind hurting question...
lol I've got a mind-hurting question. Your in a room with 3 switches. One of these switches turns on one of the three lights in the room above but you don't know which one. The other two don't work. If your only allowed to run upstairs and check once, then how to you work out which one is the switch that works?

Nup, you can only turn on one at a time. Besides, if u turned them all on at once then u wouldn't kno which one was the working one which is the basic idea.

Wow,good question Here is one,its actually something I want to ask my physics teacher. If light can travel through vacuum, then why does its speed change when it travels into water or another object from air. I'm sure this is easy but well......

It is kind of easy; light's speed does not change in different mediums. Maybe you're thinking of sound...

Re: Mind hurting question...
I thought light's speed does change in different mediums. That's why refractions happen in glass prisms, and why you see things in a different place in water than where they actually are. I probably could have worded that better lol. Oh well.

Re: Mind hurting question...
But that effect is caused by the bending of light, not a change in its speed.
re·frac·tion [ri frákshən] noun 1. physics change of direction of a wave: the change in direction that occurs when a wave of energy such as light passes from one medium to another of a different density, for example, from air to water

Re: Mind hurting question...
Yes but I was sure that it bends because of the change of speed- as the light hits, say, glass at an angle, the side of the beam that hits it first slows down causing it to change direction. Like a truck driving onto a muddy field at an angle- one wheel at the front slows down whilst the other carries on at the same speed so it changes direction a bit.
Maybe I'm making a complete idiot of myself now

Re: Mind hurting question...
Light is not a physical thing that can be slowed down. When light bends and refracts in the water, for example, it is because water and air have a different particle density. Air is a gas(except during the summer in the South ), so its particles are less compacted together. When light hits the terminator, things look different because the light is changing course. Hopefully I am making sense

Re: Mind hurting question...
Fine maybe I was thinking of the phase velocity -.-
Although some books or websites say it changes speed, and some don't: "Glass has a higher refractive index than air and the different frequencies of light travel at different speeds (dispersion), causing them to be refracted at different angles, so that you can see them" - Wikipedia "As light passes from one transparent medium to another, it changes speed, and bends."- http://www.ps.missouri.edu Those were just the first two results of a google search lol.
So how come people say "the speed of light in a vacuum" rather than just "the speed of light" if it's constant?

Well, see I don't like to gloat... so I will do it in private where you can't see me gloating ^.^
Nah I'm only joking, I don't even know why I'm being sad and discussing science when I'm not even at school I'm bored, we need to think of another confusing question...

Re: Mind hurting question...
I can admit being wrong, taking it like a man It's especially scary, because I take Physics at school.... If a tree falls in the forest, and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound? One of my dad's favorites

Re: Mind hurting question...
Hmm I hate that question- I want to say yes, but then people say "prove it" and it's annoying lol. And I can't take being wrong, it's one of my faults I suppose- I'm ultra stubborn lol. I get it from my Dad, even if I know I'm wrong I won't admit it

Re: Mind hurting question...
It's one of those whole Point-Of-View things. A tree makes a sound when it falls over on people, so it must make a sound when no one is there. Impossible to prove, but that is the most logical view. I can be both extremely stubborn, and have a open mind. I try to manage by reminding myself that I am wrong a lot, so if people can prove it, I'll admit it. But if I get pissed, I can be a "donkey" about it....
How about one hand clapping?

All right then, you're obviously smarter than me, so you think of one so I can ineffectually try to shoot it to pieces EDIT: I have to go eat, or something of that nature, see you around!

Hah! I really really doubt I'm smarter than you at all- I'm not even smart enought to think of a question O.o I'm just stubborn and slightly sarcastic.
Anyway, have fun... eating ^.^

lol you're both smarter than me for sure, but I could make decent arguments for stuff that's not too academic.

lol, the whole, falling tree tree branch thing reminds me a lot of Schrödinger's cat...anyway, what if u put on earmuffs then put a sound detector in the forest...wouldnt that work? ur not hearing it that way.

Re: Mind hurting question...
Schrödinger's cat is a quantum superposition theory by Erwin Schrödinger that says if a cat dies in a sealed box, it will be both dead and alive at the same time, but when we open the box, we only see the living version.
Anyway, I say yes to the tree branch thing, because it, in my opinion, can be tested lol.
edit: i meant the cant was dead, not alive, when u open the box

Re: Mind hurting question...
But if the cat dies, how can it be alive when you open the box? That's what I argue too, because that is the most logical course. "Testing" it like you did takes the fun out of it though lol. Although............ You don't know that it would actually record a sound unless you actually tried it..... Too scientific, not enough head-exploding

Silverwolf Strider wrote: lol I've got a mind-hurting question. Your in a room with 3 switches. One of these switches turns on one of the three lights in the room above but you don't know which one. The other two don't work. If your only allowed to run upstairs and check once, then how to you work out which one is the switch that works? you turn one on, leave it on for ten minutes, turn it off and another on, go up, and if the lights aren't on, then feel the lights. If they're hot, it was the first, if not, the last. heard this before, that's how i know. and if the branch isn't in a vacuum, of course it makes a sound. and yeah, how can it be alive and dead at the same time. And what's with killing cats? I'm offended!

Yes, i guess it would take the fun out, but its not fun for ur mind to hurt when questions like that are asked.lol...

Re: Mind hurting question...
But that's the whole point of those questions: to make your mind hurt. Something I ponder: I wonder sometimes if everything outside my field of perception actually exists. I cannot prove that it does because I am not there. It doesn't exist to me, because it is not a part of me, I cannot feel it, or hear it, yet science demands that it does. Something I use to torture myself at odd hours.... I guess that kind of combines everything

Re: Mind hurting question...
Wasn't that cat thing something to do with parallel universes? Something like if you put it in there with a radioactive substance that decays at random intervals and seal the box so nobody can see it, the cat exists dead in one universe and alive in a parallel universe, until you observe it by opening the box. It all sounds crazy to me, and I don't believe it, but that's just what I remember .

Re: Mind hurting question...
If one were to believe that it would result in an infinite number of possibilities, because every fraction of a second the cat could live or die. The infinite universe theory:Every instant, an infinity of choices are made, or random events happen, and each different "choice" results in a new universe. I'm hoping that makes sense.

Why don't you believe it? Or why would someone believe it? There is no way of proof.

Re: Mind hurting question...
I know, no proof for it, no proof against it (a bit like God- I wish religious debate wasn't banned *sniffle*) so I'm going to say that it is perfectly possible that that does happen, but I personally don't think it does, I don't know why. I suppose it's just really difficult to get your head around the idea of infinity (well, it is for me).

Re: Mind hurting question...
Although with the idea of God, one could argue both ways. Anyways, with infinity, infinity is like an abstract concept. There is no beginning, no end, it just is. Kind of like imaginary numbers in math: we came up with them to explain the unexplainable.

Re: Mind hurting question...
I saw something in the favorite quotes topic that made my head hurt. It was something about a glass being half full or half empty, was there not half enough to fill the glass or was there twice more needed, or was it both, or did the other part evaporate... ugh, I'll just copy and paste it later, I can't remember.EDIT: here it is Quote: "Is the glass half full,
Or is the glass half empty.
Could the glass possibly two sizes to big for the amount of water,
or did just half of the water evaporate into the air.
Or was it both?"

There is no way you can argue that, though. The glass is both half empty and half full at the same time.

Re: Mind hurting question...
Yep, it's a matter of your perception.. If you're an optimist then you'll say the glass is half full.. if you're a pessimist you'll say the glass is half empty. It's the same with saying "It's hard; but it's possible" compare to "It's possible; but it's hard"
see the difference?
