 Luck in LossThe man that stood before them looked like a slaver, he was grungy, covered in a sandy grime, and it disgusted Soleil. She wasn't used to dealing with these kind of people, though her sister seemed to want to try and get directions from him. "Well, ma'ams, if you go straight you'll find a town called Vere-", he was cut off. Soleil was losing her patience. Good things never happened when she lost her patience. At this moment, looking at the despicable scum of a man in front of her, trying to give Illuna directions, she was inclined to sock him in the face. She did the only thing she could do. With a feral snarl she jumped forward, pulling a dagger from her belt. She jolted over the man and pulled him close to her by his shirt, slitting his throat as she did so. "Scum." She threw him away from her, kicking his side when he fell. She pulled a small rag out of her hip pouch and wiped the blade clean, scowling. In the back of her mind she knew that she shouldn't have done it, but she really didn't care. He was annoying. And he had been leering at Illuna. After all, it wasn't in her coding to be kind to scum. "Come on, Illuna. We'll find a town eventually." Re: Luck in Loss Illuna blinked in surprise as the man before her suddenly collapsed to the ground with a slit throat, Soleil standing behind him with a bloody knife and scowling down at him. "Yes Soleil, we might find a town eventually, but he would have made the process much quicker," she sighed, shaking her head. She was far too used to her twin sister's attitude to be too upset by the meaningless death. Illuna was very much aware of the disgusting man's covetous looks towards her, but she hadn't minded them, as long as he gave them directions.
A light whuff of amusement from behind her told her exactly what Sasha thought of the matter, even without the she-wolf reaching into her mind. "Who cares if it takes us longer. At least I dont have to look at swine." She glowered over at the dead man, and hmphed. This was going to be an interesting journey for sure. She'd heard the man say straight and decided they should go that way, "You heard him say straight, so lets try that." Then again, he never quite got the name out, so who knows what we're walking into?" she asked, quiet as ever. Nonetheless, she started walking forward, desperate for some shade. A gentle nudge at her side told her that Sasha was walking beside her, ready as ever to act as a prop for Illuna to lean on while she walked. The half-shade girl smiled down at her friend again and reached out a grateful hand, gently grabbing the scruff of her neck.
"Soleil, you never did tell me what exactly we're doing out here in the middle of the desert. "Look, whatever we walk into, I can handle. You'll be fine, plus its only a couple hours until nightfall, then you'll have your strength all filled up." She kicked the sand as she caught up to her sister, and grimaced, not even affected by the heat. She knew her sister was and flicked her eyes to Veer's, implying that he should stand with his head above her sister, to block out the sun. Re: Luck in Loss See, she's not as tough as she acts. Illuna chuckled at the wolves, patting Veer's shoulder gratefully. "Well that's as good a reason as any I suppose, I just wanted you to say it," she teased. Her sister was right, she could feel herself getting stronger, ever so slowly, as the seconds passed. By the time the sun set, she should be almost at full strength.
"So dear sister, entertain me whilst we travel. What have you been up to since last we met?" she asked. Soleil always managed to get into the most interesting situations when they were apart. Illuna wasn't sure if this was because she was one of those people who simply attracted trouble, or the kind that went looking for it. Knowing her twin as she did, it was most likely both. Soleil wasn't known for going out of her way to ignore the failings and idiocies of others. She scowled and looked at the darkening sky distastefully, feeling her power drain as it grew darker. Suddenly she remembered something rather awful, "And I may have pissed off a dragon about a week ago." She shifted her hands, knowing that would upset her sister. She turned to look her sister fully in the face, maroon eyes disbelieving. "Surely you're joking. 'Cause even you know that dragons don't give up. You make them mad, they keep coming!" she groaned and put her head in her hands.
She looked up at the sky, using the position of the sun and her growing strength to gauge the time. "Sasha, do you smell anything? That dragon could already be nearby. How did you manage to get away from it?" she said, looking from one to the other. Sasha lifted her snow white muzzle into the air and took a big breath. I don't smell anything. Soleil shoved her hands into her pockets. Glaring at the sky, even though she was unaffected by the heat. "And Its not like I meant to piss it off," She shifted her feet, "I mean, it was breathing on me. Have you ever smelled those things breath? Its like breathing noxious fumes." She scowled again, kicking sand just before jumping up into the air and landing on Veer's back, gripping the tuft of hair on his spine. She stood carefully looking ahead of them. That's your excuse for pissing off a being that has more power than the two of us combined?" she asked incredulously. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish as she tried to find something else to say, but she couldn't think of anything, so she just turned and started to walk off.
"Oh enough of this already!" she said grumpily, tired of walking along like a slow human. Her form rippled and blurred, shrinking down towards the sand. A few moments later, a small lark was standing where a human had been moments before. The bird fluttered up onto Soleil's shoulder, right in a prime position to peck her ear. Have patience for your sister, you know she can't help being a thorn in the side of all that is kind and patient. Sasha said, chuckling slightly. Re: Luck in Loss Soleil moved her eyes to look at her sister on her shoulder, knowing that she'd peck her ear if she could. She was willing to grab her sister if that was going to happen. She refused to apologize, "I could totally take it." She let the scowl fall from her face as she looked ahead, the weakness that came with the night was already fatiging her.
Veer snorted and began to trot faster now that the two twins were on top of him, the flames that ran along his paws parted the dunes, leaving a distinct pattern, but Soleil wasn't concerned about that. She glanced at her sister carefully. In her mind she was going from being annoyed, to indifferent, to exasperated, and then right back to annoyed. This was no less than she had expected from Soleil, yet she couldn't help but feel a little weary from it all. She looked up at the sky again. It couldn't be more than an hour from sunset. Do you want to keep going through the night, or make camp? she asked, changing the subject. I'd be willing to take watch duty the whole night so you can rest. she offered. Just as the tattoos on their faces suggested, one twin's power was tied to the moon, the other to the sun. Illuna was at her most powerful at night, when the moon was high and bright in the sky.
This is assuming of course that the two of you want to stop. I know I could use a good hunt. Sasha said, in one of the rare moments that she included Soleil and Leer in their conversations. I am slightly hungry. The last meal we had was that... nagra in the beors. He seemed to think his words carefully through, but Soleil knew it was simply that he was unused to opening his mind to the other two.
It wasn't like she couldn't do anything at night, she could still run and jump and climb. She could do everything a normal human could at night, but she found that the boredom that came with not being able to use her powers beat out the normalcy of her skills in the nighttime. Re: Luck in Loss Sasha returned within thirty minutes, much to Illuna's surprise. "I can't believe you managed to find a place so quickly," she said, looking around at their campsite. Sasha had done them one better than a rock formation. It was a small oasis hidden by a rock, with a flat rock just above the surface of the sand that they could sleep on. The water was ringed by short, stunted trees and mildly green grass. When she tasted it, Illuna was pleased to find it was cool and sweet.
Well I am a wolf. Superior schnoz and all that. Sasha replied humorously, her eyes twinkling. "Yes, but still. And it's a little weird to hear you say "schnoz". Ah well. Are you going to hunt now or wait til dark?" Lu said, taking stuff for cooking out of her pack. She had a little jerked meat and some dried up vegetables, but she thought she had the makings for a relatively tasty meal. Now. Those antelope things running around out there should be getting ready to settle for the night, and they look plump enough for a decent meal. I might even have enough left over to bring back for you to cook tomorrow, depending on if Veer kills his own or opts to share. the wolf replied, trotting out to catch her meal. Re: Luck in Loss Soleil looked up and grinned, "Oh bother." She cackled, "Look, its the bird brain with the bad breath." She gently set down her bag and tugged out her Tiger Claws, quickly attaching them and letting her eyes glow.
When they were attached she crouched, watching the dragon with wild eyes, "If you even scuff my sister up I will ruin you." She jumped and ran up the side of one of the larger trees, then jumped from the top, springing like a vicious cat, flying just above the dragon's neck. Soleil spiralled down, landing on the dragons neck, before laughing again, "A little hard for you to get me when I'm up here, isn't it, bird brain?" Veer watched Soleil sniffing at the water as he lapped some up, I'm not against sharing, Sasha. Would you like to go now? It would be unpleasant if you're fur were to burn. He padded away slightly, shooting Illuna a look as she sat in the water of the oasis. What are you going to do about Lei? I'm going to wait til dark and then beat them both into submission, the same as always, with a slightly different cast," she said darkly, wading out of the water. She grimaced with distaste at the feel of wet clothes, but thankfully she had the rock to sit on while they dried out next to the fire.
Valora screamed in rage and pulled out of her dive sharply, twisting to the side to dump her enemy off. Get OFF me you tick! she hissed, hitting Soleil with her wing when she finally shook her off, effectively driving her deep into the water below. The dragoness crowed with malicious amusement, gliding to a slightly higher altitude so the witch-girl couldn't jump on her back like that again. "Oh look. You're all wet," Lu said dryly, putting her chin on her knee and wrapping her arms around her leg. Good point Veer, let's get out of here. Sasha said hastily, heading out at a dead run. She stuck her tongue out and took off running away from the oasis, sliding amongst the sand as she dried herself with the sun.
She picked up a nearby rock and flung it at the dragon, successfully hitting it with a dull thud. She grinned and stopped, watching the moronic beast. Veer nodded, Don't be to hard on Lei. She's desperate for it. Valora's eyes seemed to glow, she was so livid. You dare call me a coward?! she snarled, landing in a swirl of sand, effectively cutting off Soleil's escape route back to her sister. The dragoness crouched low and loosed a stream of ruby red fire at her enemy, then snapped her jaws shut and lunged at the girl right behind it. Her jump was slightly off course though, and she knocked the girl over with her shoulder. She spun around, laughing aloud in her hoarse dragon voice. Re: Luck in Loss Soleil snarled, cutting through the fire with her claws, then letting out a loud oof when the dragon collided with her. She stood quickly and jumped toward the dragon, getting angry now.
"Stupid flying cow! I'll rip you to shreds!" She lunged forward, slashing the dragons front leg with her right claw before connecting it into the tissue. She used the wound to swing herself up next to the dragons neck and kicked with as much force as she had, connecting a solar flare to it. This cause a reddish concussion to connect with the dragons neck. Re: Luck in Loss Valora wheezed in pain as first Soleil slashed her front leg open, then kicked her in the throat. She's fast, the dragoness gasped grudgingly. She took a moment to get her breath, then looked over her shoulder at her enemy. You are so going to DIE. she hissed, her eyes flashing dangerously.
She turned slowly and deliberately on the spot, her eyes skewering the Shade's spawn. A low hiss erupted from her throat as she paced back and forth in front of Soleil, her eyes never leaving the girl's. She paced for what seemed like forever, then faster than the human eye could follow, she lunged forward, pinning Soleil to the ground with her forepaws. You can't make those concussion blasts if you can't move. she rumbled, jerking her head towards her paws, which were flattening every inch of Soleil against the ground. I'd do the same to your face, but suffocating you with my foot would be too easy. Veer, how often does this sort of thing happen to Soleil? Sasha asked her hunting companion. Currently they were stalking some very plump looking antelope that were getting ready to rest for the night. She had spotted a surprisingly fat one near the edge of the herd. It was surprisingly fat because she could tell even from this distance that one of it's legs was messed up. Re: Luck in Loss Soleil's eyes flashed and she began to thrash around, unhappily moving. She glanced at the sky and realized she probably only had a minute left. Upon realizing this she thrashed her legs upward, moving her legs an inch of the ground. When her heels hit the ground she immediately initiated a double concussion, not caring if it hurt her in the process.
She leaked as much energy as she could into the two concussions and snarled as her body was propelled into the sandy earth, while the dragon was tossed several feet into the air. She instantly rolled over and crawled to a stand before leaping out of the crater she'd created, grappling onto a spare rock to hold on. "I wouldn't die for the world." she spat towards the dragon and snarled yet again, grasping another rock, then throwing it at the despicable creature, just as the sun fully set. The drain on her solar power was immediate and her shoulders slightly slumped. She spun on her left foot and took off for the oasis, intending on jumping into the water. Veer snuffled, eyes on two older female antelope, Usually ten times during an hour. But with Lu its usually more like five. Re: Luck in Loss Valora was thrown back in an unceremonious heap as Soleil somehow managed to create a concussion blast. The ruby dragoness struggled to her feet, her vision slightly blurred from the attack and the landing. She snarled when Soleil threw a rock at her, and lurched to the side to avoid the projectile. I'm not done with you yet! she snarled. She was fully aware that Soleil's power was tied to the sun, and now that it had set, she was at her weakest.
Valora leapt heavily into the air, following closely behind her enemy. She amused herself by occasionally spitting large fireballs at her. They were almost near the oasis, but Valora didn't care. She could easily finish her off now, no matter where she went. A flash of white light from beside the water made her look up. You know, sometimes it's dull being around Illuna, but I think I prefer it compared to that. Sasha chuckled, charging towards their marks. He must have seen the one with the messed up leg as well, because he was heading right for it. Sasha decided to go for the one next to it, so she wouldn't mess up his attack. It was smaller than the other, but they could feast on the other and take the smaller back to Illuna. Illuna watched the back-and-forth fight, idly braiding pieces of grass together. Occasionally she would look up at the sky, counting down the time until sunset. She was biding her time until she could teach both of the nimrods a lesson. Her clothes had long since dried out in the desert heat, so she remained comfortable as the sun dropped lower in the sky. After what seemed like a millenia, the bottom edge of the sun finally dipped below the horizon. Just in time to. Lu thought to herself, watching the dragoness chase after Soleil. She was shepherding her sister with large balls of fire. Truthfully Illuna found the sight entertaining, but it had to stop sometime. She stood and accessed her full power, which was now available to her with the falling of the sun and the rise of the moon. The crescent moon tattoo on her face glowed silvery-white, her maroon eyes glittered in the night, and silver moonlight swirled around her, increasing in speed and changing direction until it looked like lightning bending around her. The brightness of the moonlight increased until she stood out like a beacon in the desert landscape, her outline almost blinding to look at. Illuna threw out her left hand and four thick ropes of light arced away from her and wrapped around Valora. Another flick of her hand tightened the ropes. "Come here, both of you," she commanded, looking fiercely from the dragon to her sister. A smaller, thinner ribbon of moonlight raced towards Soleil and hastened her forward while the other four around Valora retracted, bringing the dragoness with them. I must have lost track of the days. It's already the week before the full moon. she thought to herself, frowning up at the sky. She almost never forgot what day of the month it was. It was impossible and actually a little dangerous. Re: Luck in Loss Soleil didn't fight the tendril of light that slipped around her waist and instead let it pull her to her sister. She scowled, mumbling, "Sorry." She looked away, knowing she'd probably get her head beat in if it wasn't for the dragon that had tried to.
She kicked at the sand as she came to a stop next to her sister, realizing that it must be the week before the full moon. She glared at Valora, steeling her eyes and face. Veer chuckled, Well, Lei can beat almost anything we've run into, so it isn't bad. He let his jaws wrap around the antelope's neck and crushed down swiftly, immediately killing it. The meat was steaming hot and tasted like the wild. It was very good considering the climate.

It was the other two-leg, except she was different. She was wrapped in white light and power seemed to radiate from her. Let me go, you imbecile! she shrieked, struggling against the bonds. She loosed a stream of ruby fire at the girl, not caring if she hurt her. Illuna looked briefly at her sister in a way that clearly said "I'll deal with you in a minute." "Dragon! You will calm yourself!" she commanded, ignoring the force behind the mental shout. One flick of her finger formed a thick shield of silvery moonlight in between her and the dragonfire. Lu wasn't even singed by the flames. "Enough!" she bellowed, swiping her arm through the air. Another tendril of light snaked forward, this time wrapping around her snout. The flames stopped abruptly and Illuna allowed the shield to fade away. The half-Shade girl gestured with her hand and the dragoness was slowly lowered to the ground. Valora hissed, completely irate about the fact that a mere two-leg, and a human at that, had managed to incapacitate her so easily. I breathed on you because you were in my way! she snarled, trying in vain to get to Soleil so she could cut her. Illuna shook her head at her sister's reply. "Honestly Lei, can't I leave you on your own without you getting into trouble?" she asked, before holding her hand up in a 'stop' gesture. "Wait, don't answer that. Obviously I can't." She peered closely at her sister. "Go over there and sit down. Off you trot," she ordered, now making a shooing gesture. She turned back to the dragon and slowly let her power drain off. The light swirling around her faded away and her eyes stopped glowing, but the tattoo on her face still shone gently in the moonlight. Not as bright as it had been, but enough for the glow to light the left side of her face. She pointed at the ropes still holding Valora. "I may have shut down the rest of the light show for now, but those bonds will remain in place until I say otherwise," she said to the dragoness. Re: Luck in Loss Soleil sighed, stalking over to the designated spot. She looked at her sister, reprimanding the dragon, not daring to speak back to her. At this point her sister had complete control of the situation, especially considering the time that it was in the week.
Soleil kicked at some sand, before plopping down next to her pack and leaning her head agains it, like a pillow. She closed her eyes, listening to her sister and Valora. Veer took off, letting his legs and nose lead him back to the camp, and by the time he found it, he saw Soleil laying against her bag, seemingly bored and Illuna with complete control over the dragon. Veer chuckled quietly and snuck foreward watching the scene. He jumped when Soleil's voice entered into his head, Veer, see that small pile of brush and sticks? Brush you're paw up against it so it lights on fire, please. he snuffled, and did as she asked, before tearing the antelopes hind legs off, quarters and all. Re: Luck in Loss Lu looked behind her as a light suddenly flared, it was only Veer starting a cooking fire. "Thank you Veer," she said kindly, turning back to Valora. The girl studied the dragoness for a moment before seating herself comfortably in the sand. She leaned back against Sasha, who had dropped her own antelope beside Veer, and watched the red struggle against her "chains". "There really is no point in trying to break those. With the moon waxing to it's fullest point as it's now starting to do, I'm becoming more powerful with each passing second," she commented in a bored tone.
She felt restless in the light of the moon, and leaned forward irritably. Sasha, go eat your meal, we'll be fine here. she said silently to her friend, running a hand through the she-wolf's ruff. Alright, but I'm keeping an eye on her in any case. Dragons aren't just known for their brute strength, you know. came the reply as she trotted off to eat. I have no quarrel with you, girl... Not yet at least. Release me and I will go on my way. I give you my word that I will not attack your sister as long as she is with you. Valora growled, speaking the last sentence in the ancient language. She waited a moment, then thrashed around in the sand, straining to break the strange ropes tying her down. She couldn't even roar in frustration, the rope around her snout held her mouth firmly closed. "Well that's good for me, I suppose. But what happens when she is no longer traveling with me? She's the only family I have left, and it would be a sad thing for you to kill her the moment I can no longer see her. I'll make you a deal; I will release you, for the most part, under the condition that you travel with us for awhile. The ropes around Valora vanished, all except for the one's pinioning her wings to her back, and another formed, connecting her left forefoot to Soliel's right ankle. "It's the two of you not being able to get along that's causing me a headache, so for the duration of the trip, or until you can play nicely, you will be tied together," she said, a full-blown grin on her face. Sasha coughed a little over her meal at Lu's sudden idea, but she had already put it in place before the she-wolf could advise against it. Soleil was so angry that her tatoo began to glow red, unnatural for the night time, but that meant she was generating heat, as if she was using back up energy that was usually important to her last-ditch effort attack. She felt her fingers twitching, itching to punch something or cut something up. She snatched the meat from her sister, then proceeded to tear it into chunks with her hands, then tossing it in her mouth she bit down hard, trying to ignore her anger. She didn't really need sleep with the full moon approaching. It energized her and made her feel as if she was rested, even on zero sleep. She leaned back against the rock wall and ruffled Sasha's fur. It was a little wet from where she had tried to wash the gore from her meal off.
Valora grumbled and turned her back on the group, curling up into a ball to sleep.  What do you want to happen next? I know they're on their way to Vereshae, how long do you want that to take?Illuna watched over her sister, Sasha, and Veer throughout the night. She knew perfectly well what Valora had been asking her sister. It was only natural after all. When everyone finally did settle into sleep, she got up and scooped sand over their fire. With Veer laying practically on top of Soleil, she didn't have to worry about her sister getting cold. And a fire in the middle of the desert night would stick out like a sore thumb. She walked back over to the wall and sat down, watching the night pass them by. When the sun finally peeked over the edge of the world she stretched and stood up. Normally she would feel an almost immediate drain on her power with the rising of the sun. Today it was a quick drain, but when it was over, she felt stronger than she normally did. She did a few poses of the Rimgar to loosen her muscles that were stiff from sitting against a wall all night, then stoked the fire. "Wake up, my little darlings!" she yelled in a cheerful voice, putting a pot on for tea. Soleil's eyes opened in annoyance, though the sight of the sun cheered her up and caused her to smirk. "Darlings? Really?" She stood, popping her neck, then bending over backwards until her palms hit the sand. She heard her mid back pop several times and she gently her legs up so she was doing a handstand. She felt her arms pop in they're sockets, then she lowered herself, before pushing up and flipping over in the air to land on her feet. "Hah! The sun, how spectacular it is to see you and feel you're warmth." She could already feel her skin warming to its normal temperature, which was much warmer than any human, much less her sisters. She grinned as she flexed her hands and then her calves. "Look at me, I could take down a dragon." She smirked, glancing over toward Valora in a joking fashion, though she wondered if the dragon would realize she was joking. Ah well. "Alright, so while you two were busy playing yesterday, I thought it would be a good idea to mark the direction we're supposed to be going," she said, gesturing at an arrow scratched in the sand. It pointed almost due east, straight into the heart of the Hadarac, and right into the rays of the morning sun.

Lu narrowed her eyes. She had a suspicion that Valora had just said something to Soleil, but the dragoness hadn't allowed her to hear what it was. "Alright then," she said slowly, staring at the ruby dragoness until she lowered her gaze, "let's get a move on. If what Valora says is true, we'll make it today. After that we can rest for a bit and maybe have a look around. And Soleil, don't call the dragon barrel-belly." She looked at her sister for a moment, then glanced at Sasha. I don't suppose I have to ask, but I will anyway: Will you keep an eye on those two and make sure they don't attack each other the moment my back is turned? she asked Sasha privately. I'll keep an eye them for sure, but I doubt there is much I could do to stop them from hurting one another, came the silent reply. Illuna smiled at the wolf and ruffled the snowy-white hair on the back of her neck. She stood beside her friend for a moment, then looked around and tried to gauge how long it would be before signs of their presence disappeared. She frowned and smoothed out the patch where Valora had slept, then nodded and walked out of the camp. She scuffed her feet and began walking, silently pushing her hands into the metal.braces that attached her Tiger Claws to her hands and strapping them up. Veer, keep an eye out. I don't want to risk anything., she whispered gently into his mind. When she felt his conciousness brush her own, she turned, looking to her sister. "If you see anything, tell me. My claws wish to be fed." Soleil grinned wickedly, flexing her hands and crouching with her teeth bared. Re: Luck in Loss Valora snorted derisively at Soleil's eagerness for battle and stood up to follow Illuna. As she was walking passed Soleil, the tip of her tail twitched and brushed against her roughly, knocking her out of her crouch. Whoops, she said unapologetically, even though it was an honest accident. She loosed a coughing growl when she looked over her shoulder and saw the girl sprawled across the sand. Turning her head to look forward again, she saw Illuna giving her a severe look. What? I didn't do it on purpose, she said, shrugging her shoulders.
She continued walking and passed Lu, the bright white rope connecting her to Soleil stretching as she went. You call me flying lizard, and I'll call you groundhog, she said to Soleil, showing her an image of her face planted in the sand as it was. You two are right to be on guard. I passed a camaflouged camp yesterday after I had already flown over the city. I'm not sure who they were, they must have seen me coming because there were no people around, I'd wager they were hiding, she said to them, gesturing with her tail at Soleil's claw-like weapons and Illuna's sword. Glaring at the ruby dragoness as she walked sedately passed, Illuna turned away from her sister and followed the dragon. "Come on sister," she called, leaving her to pick herself up off the ground. "A camp you say? How many tents were there?" she asked, immediately recieving an image of what looked like three, large heaps of sand. It was an aerial view, and she could tell that if someone were to pass them on the ground, they would appear as normal as any of the dunes around them at present. "I imagine the only people around here that could conceal themselves with such skill would be the people of the city we're looking for, nomads, or slavers. At least we don't have to worry about Imperial soldiers," she said pensively. "Looks like you might get the fight you're looking for after all Soleil," she said to her sister, stressing the word. She didn't want her older sister thinking should could attack them without cause. Re: Luck in Loss Soleil growled, feeling a surge of anger course through her veins. This wasnt an uncommon occurance, and she hid it well, by simply hopping back up and moving forward, using her slight control of the earth to cause the dragons claws to sink just a bit more, it was hardly noticeable, but it made Lei feel a little better.
She stoo, briskly moving behind her sister, claws moved to her midsection, "Good. Will you control that damned beast, sister? You seem to like the creature." She pursed her lips as she saw the hidden camp through their link. Her mind quickly set to find a logical reason, "Not slavers. They aren't usually adept enough in the magical arts to create such an illusion. Nomads perhaps, they breathe this desert, just as much as I live for the sun." Soleil scuffed the toe of her boot in the sand, contemplating these new possible enemies. "This city must be important. Not just to have hidden camps, but imagine the intricacies... Where does their water stem from? Their food?" Although it would be nice if the hostilities, intended or not, could cease for a moment," Lu said nonchalantly, speaking first to her sister, then addressing them both. A low sneeze at her side indicated Sasha's agreement with her statement. The half-Shade smiled at the noise, then looked over her shoulder at Soleil to see her reaction. Her bangs flopped over her eyes and shaded them from the glare rising off of the sand behind them. Because of this shading, the bright light didn't affect her and she was able to see something peering at them over the top of a dune some distance away.
She faced forward casually and reached out her mind to Sasha, showing the she-wolf what she had seen. Sasha dropped her nose to the ground and loped off as if she had caught the scent of some prey. What she really intended to do was lope out a few miles until Lu was certain she couldn't be seen, then circle around and come up on the flank of whatever appeared to be following them. Nobody do anything, just keep walking. Something or someone is back there watching us. Sasha has gone to see what and she'll come back and tell us what once she has something to tell us, she said silently, the tattoo on her face growing visibly brighter in the sunlight as she prepared to defend herself and her group of friends. Valora's tail whipped to the side, but she resisted the urge to look behind her. She took a deep breath of the hot, dry wind swirling around them, but it was coming from the wrong direction. I can't smell anything, the wind is wrong. What did you see? she asked Illuna, sidestepping around the black wolf Veer as she overtook him. Nothing really, just a flash of something ducking behind the dunes back there. I know it was watching us though, I can feel it, she said, shivering slightly. Suddenly paranoid that there might be more hidden dangers nearby she picked up the thread of their conversation as if they had sensed nothing amiss. "I don't know, but I imagine we'll find out sooner or later. I've heard tell that they train some of the finest warriors and magicians in the Empire though. Re: Luck in Loss Soleil huffed, and glared at her sister, before she realized that unease was radiating off of her in waves. Nothing will get the drop on me at least. She rolled her shoulders, and heard her back pop once again, They'll be roasted before they could even come near you, Lu.
She looked begrudgingly toward the dragon, "But Lu, the dragon and I are getting along. Right, blubber breath?" She grinned over at the dragon, playfully kicking sand in her direction before making eye contact with Veer, telling him to keep a mental link with Sasha, just in case she needed back up. She couldn't have her sisters friend harmed, it wouldn't do. She reached a hand up, and scratched Veer's leg, "What do you suppose is waiting for us in this town, sis?" She looked toward the dunes, "I mean, a hidden city, in the middle of the Hadarac. Re: Luck in Loss Valora bared her fangs at Soleil, her eyes narrowing. She hissed low for a second, then her face softened and she eyed the Shade-girl, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. Indeed we are, no need to worry Illuna, she said. Groundhog and I are doing just fine, trussed up together like a couple of feast-day turkeys, she added, twitching their bindings with her tail. She really was almost getting used to being tied up to Soleil like this. At least she could move as far away from her as she pleased.
Lu looked from the ruby dragoness to her sister and back again. Her head fell forward and she sighed in exasperation. "Of course you are," she said dryly. She looked up again to watch where she was going, casting her mind out a short distance to pinpoint where Sasha was. The white wolf was already almost a half mile out and was rounding out her circle. It wouldn't be much longer before she reached the spot that Lu had noticed. "I don't know Sol. I'd imagine big, scary guards though. Like I said, they produce some of the finest warriors in Alagaesia and are free of the King's control. I don't imagine they're very fond of outsiders," she said pensively. She wasn't worried at all about the fact that the leaders of the city might try to harm them. She could escape only too easily if she had to, and Soleil was more than capable of taking care of herself. And the thought that anything inside it's walls might pose a threat to a dragon was almost laughable; almost, but not entirely impossible. Lu, I've found him. It appears to be a child, Sasha said, interrupting Lu's musings. The half-Shade looked around her, blinking in surprise. She hadn't expected Sasha to reach the place quite so quickly. We ran into each other as he was going to meet his group, we startled each other. The wind was blowing from the wrong direction and I did not hear his approach because the sand muffled the sound, she said in reply to her friend's unspoken thoughts. She sounded distinctly miffed that a human child had managed to sneak up on her, even if they had done it to each other. Are you alright? Did he attack you? Illuna asked, broadening their connection so she could see through the she-wolf's eyes. From their connection she could feel hot sand shifting under the wolf's pads as she circled the ground and hear the low growls she uttered while watching the boy. He was crouched like the wolf, circling to the right with Sasha, neither one of them taking their eyes off the other. His skin was extremely tan and he had sandy colored hair, but his eyes were a deep blue, unusual for the people of the Hadarac. His eyes narrowed as soon as he came into focus for Illuna, almost like he sensed her presence. "Wolf, it would not do for you to attack me, not if you wish for your companions to live," he said calmly, his voice surprisingly deep for the age he appeared to be. Without realizing it, Lu narrowed the eyes of her own body and Sasha's along with them. That voice coupled with his appearance... Don't attack him, but don't let him reach his friends. We're coming, she said to Sasha, already pulling her mind away. When she came back to her body she had to blink for a moment to readjust her weaker eyes. "Sasha has found our pursuer. He's just a boy, or so he appears. Let us go to her," she said aloud, turning and setting off at a run. In midstride she shifted into her own wolf form so she could cover ground quicker. It irked her to have to travel over ground when she could so easily fly, but Valora would then have had to follow her in the air. Re: Luck in Loss She didn't say anything about him other than they each managed to sneak up on the other. I have a feeling about him though... He seemed to notice when I joined minds with Sasha, but I couldn't feel him touching her mind at all. He shouldn't have known I was there, Lu replied, growling uneasily. She didn't like this, not at all. Stretching out completely, she poured on the speed until her paws were flying across the ground. She was going so fast that her feet barely had time to hit the ground and send up puffs of dust, which helped to slightly hide her approach.
There they are! she snarled, flying over the top of a dune. Sasha and the boy were crouched in a depression created by the sides of several dunes, still quietly circling each other. Only the occasional warning growl from Sasha broke the quiet. When Lu topped the hill, the boy's back was to her. Sasha never looked up or did anything to acknowledge her arrival, but still the boy turned to look at her and dodged out of the way as Illuna made a flying leap to try and tackle him. She twisted her head as she flew passed and snapped her teeth at him, but he was already gone, her teeth closed on air. She hit the ground hard and rolled to lessen the impact, shifting back to her real body and standing all in one smooth motion. "Who are you?" she asked coldly, silvery-white light gleaming on her skin. "Calm yourself, Moon Child. I am no threat to you," the boy said, straightening from his battle stance. He looked her up and down, sniffing slightly as if he wasn't impressed. "Where are your companions? I can smell them on you, I know you're not alone," he added, blue eyes boring into maroon. He's definitely not human, be prepared for anything, she whispered to her sister and Valora. "They're coming, so I suggest you explain yourself before they get here," she threatened. He laughed at her tartness. "Well I must say, you're a lot rougher of tongue than I would have expected just from hearing your reputation," he teased, leering at her. The smile dropped from his face and he crossed his arms, resting his chin on his thumb and forefinger while he studied her. "I don't know that it's any of your business who I am or what I'm doing anywhere, but knowing who you are, I suppose I can at least humor you with my name," he said after a moment, lifting his head off of his chin. "You may call me Ryker." Just as the fool little boy introduced himself, Valora crested the top of the hill, hissing softly, her pupils drawn up to slits. She crept slowly down the hill, her hiss shifting pitch with each step until finally she was standing between Illuna, Sasha, and the stranger. I don't know who you are, little creature, but strange as she and her companion are, they are my friends. If you harm them I will kill you, she promised, crouching as if to pounce. She stepped foreward, just in front of and to the left of her sister to somewhat circle him, her contact with Veer increased in power as he strolled up behind the boy named Ryker, You... smell strange... Soleil, I do not... think you need to be... rough with this one. Re: Luck in Loss "Well, it looks like the gang's all here," Ryker smirked, clearly not intimidated by the show of force surrounding him. "You can stop snarling at me, put your fangs away," he snapped irritably at the blood-red dragoness in front of him. She hissed and eyed him coldly, but he stared straight back without flinching. With one last irritated snap of her teeth, she ceased her hissing.
"Now, tell me. What are the twin daughters of a Shade and their assorted companions doing in the middle of the desert? Especially considering that one of you is delicate in the sunlight," he asked, eyeing the girl with silver hair. "I am not delicate!" Lu snapped, her maroon eyes flashing. A flash of silver light whipped the ground in front of Ryker, sending a puff of sand into the air in front of him. He eyed the sand quizzically, arching an eyebrow at her as if to question her control. She looked at her twin, expecting to have to restrain her from pummeling the boy, but was shocked to see her calmly standing to the side. What are you doing? I'd have thought you'd have him on the ground bleeding by now. she asked silently. There's something odd about him, Illuna. Something about him seems familiar... I can't explain it, but there's an unnatural tone to his smell. He smells like cats and somehow similar to Valora, Sasha said, uncertainty coloring her quiet voice. I don't smell like a cat, Valora grumbled at the wolf. All the same, she flicked her tongue into the air and inhaled deeply. To her, Ryker's scent was of sand, heat, and sweat, but definitely not entirely human. Sasha's right though, I don't think he's human, she added. "And as for my right to question you, I have none, not really. Lei spoke quickly, trying to understand why she didn't want to beat this child into a pulp. She was mid wonder silently thinking, Lu, I just didn't want you to hit me. Suddenly, Soleil froze. The words he had just spoken finally registering. How did he know their father was a shade? She played it cool, frantically running through her options. She didn't mind that he knew, in fact she usually cordially informed her victims that she was the child of a shade, however this put a sour taste in her mouth.
"Who said anything about a shade? We're just two ordinary sisters, wandering the world with this overgrown lizard and a couple of friends." "Now now ladies, no need for violence," Ryker admonished. "And frankly, it's not only obvious by your eyes, but to anyone who has heard the tale of the sisters marked by the Sun and the Moon. Even if it weren't for the tattoos on your faces, that rope holding you two together and your sister's display a moment ago would certainly have eliminated any doubt. It's not everyday you witness a person wielding the power of moonlight. Come to think of it, it's very near to the full moon, isn't it? I suppose that explains how you can stand to have be under such harsh exposure to the sun," he continued, his eyes gleaming brightly as he revealed just how much he knew about them. "As for you, my ruby enchantress, I've heard many tales of dragons being back in the land, of all colors and sizes. I must say, for you to be the first one I've seen for myself, you are quite fetching," he said charmingly, smiling at Valora. Lu's breath whooshed from her lungs in a loud gasp when the stranger spoke about the full moon. She felt like someone had punched her. How does he know that?! Nobody knows that but Sasha, Lei, Veer, and Valora! How can he know about the source of our powers? WHO IS HE? she shrieked inside her mind, scared for the first time. You don't think he's that presence we've been feeling lately, do you? she asked her twin, shuddering at the thought of the black cloud that had been hovering at the back of her mind for months. She smirked at Valora, letting a short laugh out, "You hear that Barrel Belly! The child finds you fetching! I fear we've found you a boyfriend, O Beautious One!" She finally let her true laughter come through, not even noticing the sharp pull. "Oh small one, you are quite the humorous cretin. I wonder, if you find my sister so very strong, do you know much about me?" Sol took a step closer, eyes locking onto his, no fear, no stress, "I am havoc in this desert, even at night." "Oh, I've no doubt that your power is a force to be reckoned with; I doubt it's possible to tell which of you two is the stronger twin. I also doubt that it would be a pleasant experience to be the test subject for such a competition," he said, feigning a look of pain at the thought.
"Oh I don't know about being her boyfriend, I prefer to admire such beauty from afar. My people aren't really big on commitment," he said with a wink. Valora snarled furiously at Soleil's teasing. She lunged at the girl as if she had finally had enough, her jaws open wide and her talons grasping at the air. At the last moment, she twisted away from Soleil and made for Ryker. Her head darted forward and her teeth snapped together where his leg should have been. To her surprise, her serrated fangs closed on empty air. Distracted as she was by her conflicted feelings on Lei's agreement that this might be the person or thing that was pursuing them, Lu almost missed Valora's enraged charge at her sister. She cried out and raised her hand, her power flaring up to clench at the rope of moonlight tying them together. Before she could draw on it to stop the dragon's tackle, she realized that the ruby dragoness was actually attacking Ryker. Illuna's mouth dropped open in surprise when she saw that Valora had missed. Re: Luck in Loss Just as she'd expected, Valora charged, sending a silent thanks her way she jumped, using the force from her movement to jump straight into an instant transmission right in front of where he'd stopped. She quickly made eye contact, grinned, noting the look of his eyes, and the way he'd jumped away, landing hunched as though prepared to go to all fours, like an animal. With that information she hooked his shirt with one of her Tiger Claws, and wrenched him around facing him towards Illuna.
"The small one thinks he's quick, sis!" She shoved him a little forward, hooking her claws tighter into his shirt, so he couldn't move, "And look at his eye's while you're there. I'm sure you'll discover that our little friend is much more used to crawling around on all fours." She unhooked him, and transmissioned back, standing next to Valora, close enough to pat her haunch, "Good job, not bad for a flying lizard! Now we know why he smelled weird to you! He's a rarity, he is. Wonder what a fur ball is doing wandering the desert." She smirked at the Werecat, smug that she'd seen through his keen charade. "Have to give it to you Fluff, wouldn't have guessed if you hadn't let me get a good look at your movements. Or you're eyes. Re: Luck in Loss Ryker barely had time to dodge after the fact that Valora was actually lunging for him registered. In a flash he was standing far away from where her jaws had snapped closed. He opened his mouth to say something witty about her aim, but before he could, Soleil materialized in front of him. The black-haired twin looked him in the eyes and smiled in a cold, triumphant manner, then flipped him around and shoved him towards her sister. The Werecat froze as the cold metal of her claw-like weapon pressed against his back and throat.
"Well. It looks like you've found me out. I'm surprised at you, Child of the Moon. My information had you down as the intelligent one, but your twin figured it out first. Although it's not exactly like I was trying to hide it," he said nonchalantly, attempting to push the blades away from his jugular. Valora snorted, unimpressed with Lei's praise. What else did you expect, Groundhog? she sniffed daintily, licking around the scales on her left forepaw. "A Werecat?" Lu said weakly, plopping down onto the hot sand. Relief colored her voice and shone on her face. Oh thank goodness. A Werecat definitely wouldn't be what's after us, she sighed thankfully, burying her face in Sasha's shoulder when the white wolf stepped forward to comfort her. Sasha licked Lu's hair comfortingly, rubbing her white face against the silver locks. She looked at the Werecat, a curious light in her sapphire eyes. I agree with Soleil, it is a little strange for one of your kind to be in the Desert. I wouldn't have thought this to be a favorable clime for Werecats. she said, looking him up and down. Ryker laughed at the perceptiveness of Soleil and the white she-wolf. "You're both correct, this isn't the sort of place you would normally run into a Werecat. But stuff happens and here I am. Which reminds me. Re: Luck in Loss Soleil grinned up at Valora, she wouldn't admit it, but she was beginning to enjoy the lizard's company, certainly better than some of the humans she had met. She focused back in on the werecat, noting his clothing, and how clean he looked, "I wouldn't call it intelligence, purr box. We're both just about the same, neither of us is smarter. I usually don't take the time to notice things before I kill someone." She chuckled, scuffing her boot in the sand, doing a quick turn to check for anything unusual, then plopping down on the sand, "We didn't say why we were in the desert, buster. Nice try though."
If you want to tell him, thats on you, Lu. She gently plucked at her sisters mind, finding the relief and the calm returning to her. "You know, sand shoes, you look a little too clean and too healthy to have been wandering the desert. I reckon there's a town nearby, perfect place for you roll on your back and sun, eh?" She smirked at the cat, moving to lie on her back. If the cat thinks he's being wily, he's sorely mistaken. If there's anything they're famous for, it would be their knowledge about things they shouldn't even know about. I wouldn't be surprised if he already knows what we're doing here, and is just being polite by asking, she said silently. I doubt very much that a Werecat would lower themselves to working with whatever it is that's after us, so I don't have a problem with telling him. He might even be able to direct us to shelter, she added.
"If you must know, we're in the desert because we're being pursued. We can see whoever, or whatever, it is coming from a long ways off here," she replied, watching him closely. Sasha stretched her neck forward, sniffing the boy curiously. Her tail wagged slowly, if uncertainly. I can't say that I'm fond of cats, but I like him, she said to Lu, lying on the sand next to her and placing her head on her lap. "I thought that might have something to do with it," Ryker replied, clearly not surprised by the revelation. "I think I know a place where you can all rest and regain your strength. It's a good thing I found you. If you had walked up to the gates without and escort, you probably would have been killed," he said calmly. "We should probably get moving soon if you want to get there before nightfall." Valora huffed at Soleil and sat next to her, enjoying the feel of hot sand on her scales. Yes, it's definitely not intelligence, particularly in the black-haired one's case, she said to the cat, laughing in her peculiar coughing-growl of a laugh. The Werecat looked at Soleil as Valora spoke, a pensive look on his face. "Yes, you really should try to be more observant when you fight. She glanced quietly back, noticing Veer's pace behind them and nodded to him, telling him to keep a sharp eye out. Really, you'd think that... I didn't know how to watch your back, Lei. Fighting like a maniac is just your style." He walked on, not bothering to wait for the Twins. He knew they wouldn't fall too far behind.
"We should be there within the next few hours. Unfortunately I don't have any water with me, so if you're thirsty, try not to pass out until we get there," he called out over his shoulder. I think you're right. He knew so much already, I wouldn't doubt that he knows the whole story. Or at least the vast majority of it, Lu said to her sister as she stood. She glanced at the Werecat as he trudged along ahead. Still, if he proves to be dangerous, which I doubt he is, we can take him, she added. Yes, we can take him, but what about his friends? There's no way he's on his own out here, Sasha said as she walked beside Illuna. Don't forget, I'm a dragon. We're not exactly pushovers, no matter how many foes we're presented with, Valora chuckled. She lifted her head and scented the air. A slight breeze was blowing straight at them and she caught a bare hint of human scent on it. Wherever we're going, there are definitely people there. I can smell them. There was a calm breeze floating on the air, slightly cooler than the rest, and though it was slight, Soleil could sense it's change, Strange, that breeze doesn't feel like a desert wind. It feels as though it's much cooler, and we are far too deep into the desert to be feeling a mountain wind. I could go without a drink for the rest of today and tomorrow with only a little discomfort, Valora interjected. On a whim, she stretched out her wing to cover the smaller beings from the sun. She's got a great sense of smell, but there's still no telling how long it'd take her to find wherever it is we're going," Lu responded, scratching behind Sasha's ears. You worry to much. All I would have to do is keep Valora in sight, which I don't think would be too difficult with her in the air, the white wolf replied. "Actually, where we're going, they prefer you to not approach from the air. For exactly the reason that Sasha just stated," Ryker said. "It's a village hidden from the eyes and knowledge of most people. There are many secrets hidden behind it's walls that must never get out. If a dragon approached it from above, it would be like a giant, sparkling beacon to our enemies, who might never have found the village otherwise," he explained. Lu perked up at Ryker's explanation, her curiosity piqued. "Ah, so it is a village we're headed for. And there are even more people there," she said. Ryker chuckled and turned to look at her so that he was walking backwards. "Well of course it's a village. What were you expecting?" he asked, his eyes bright with amusement. He looked up at the sun again and smiled widely. "We've come much farther than I would have thought, we're only an hour away now," he added. _______Time Skip_______ The group crested the last, mountainous sand dune between them and their destination. Valora was the first to see over the dune, being taller than the rest. The ruby dragoness stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes wide with surprise at what she saw below them. Ryker grinned over at her as she folded her wing against her side, leaving their group exposed to the sunshine. Re: Luck in Loss As they crested the hill, the first thing Soleil saw was the lake. The immense lake to the right of impossibly large white brick walls. Along the lake there were rows upon rows of crops, all in various states of growth, with farmers tending them. Straight ahead was the tall wooden gate, almost as tall as the brick walls, but just a small bit shorter, the gates sat open, by at least ten feet welcoming people inside it's safe walls.
Soleil gawked, "Thought you said it was a village, Ryker? This is a damn city!" She moved forward quickly, within forty yards they were at the gate, still looking amongst the beautiful and staggering walls. Soleil was about to take a step into the city when a young woman landed directly in front of her, giving her a small smile. “'Fraid I can't let you walk in alone yet, Miss." Irina looked to Soleil's side noticing Ryker, "Oh, Ryker, I never even saw you leave the town! I suppose you found these people?" She smiled, giving him a wondering look, “How you manage to find random people in the desert, I will never know. But I suppose since you brought them here they want something.” Irina moved forward, offering her hand first to Soleil, then to Illuna saying, “My names Irina, I'm standing in as a Gate Guard today, in fact, my whole crew is. Unfortunately they just went to the Business Center to inform the Chief that we have visitors. I'm supposed to escort you there now, and I'm sure Ryker wouldn't mind tagging along.” She grinned, then surveyed the rest of the members of their motley crew, “Well, bless my soul, a dragon. We haven't seen one of your kind in many a year, dear dragon.” Irina bent low, just at the dragons paws and looked up into Valora's eyes, “May I ask you're name?” After a moment, Irina realized that there were two other members of this crew. A small white wolf, that looked female, judging from the slenderness of her body, and a large wolf, coming up to about a little over half the size of the dragon. “Wow, there are some interesting characters here. And what are you're names wolves?” She glanced at Illuna and Soleil, trying to ask if they were sentient creatures, without saying anything. Verdican was quietly walking next to Darian, as they waited just inside the door to the Business Center, “What do you think these newcomers want, Dar? They don't seem like the type who want to order a kill. But they also don't seem like visitors.” He scuffed his boot on the ground, and waved at a the few townsfolk that were milling about in they're days. The Chief had said that he'd see them immediately, wanting to handle the initial introduction stage as fast as possible, but asked them to wait just inside the doors, ready to welcome Irina when she brought them in. He wasn't really ready to meet new people, it wasn't like him to be a social butterfly like Irina and Darian. He was content to stand behind them and let them handle the niceties, but he had a feeling that this group wasn't going to let him do that. He had a feeling he was about to make friends. He had never been accustomed to the actual act, and both of his friends knew that about him, they both knew him far to well. He was absolutely sure that Darian could tell he was nervous. This was why he never worked the gate. This was why he was always doing jobs, or in the Guard posts on top of the wall, or helping out at the HQ. Re: Luck in Loss "I may have understated a bit," Ryker said, hiding a smile behind his hand as he watched Soleil and her twin gaping that the sights that were displayed in front of them. He heard something moving through the air and looked up just in time to see a guard land in front of Lei. "Ah, Irina. I didn't know you were on the gate today," he said warmly. "These lovely ladies are Soleil and Illuna. Soleil is the one with the sun tattoo and Illuna has the moon tattoo. The wolves are their companions; the small she-wolf is Sasha and the black behemoth is Veer. The dragoness we've all had the pleasure of meeting is Valora," he continued, introducing the group.
"And as for how I find strange people in strange places," he added, placing a thumb on his nose cheekily, "a magician never reveals their secrets." Sasha looked around, the tip of her black nose quivering as she breathed in a multitude of new scents that emanated from the city. She could also smell freshly turned earth, manure, and plant-life wafting over from the fields. How can they grow anything in the middle of the desert, let alone keep this place hidden? she asked Illuna, her voice colored with awe. I would guess that magic is involved. Look inside the walls. I see a number of elves moving about. If I had to guess, I would say it's their handiwork, Lu quietly replied. She stepped forward and shook hands with the guard. "Hello, it's a pleasure to meet you. Irina, was it? This is a marvelous place you've got. Sasha is fascinated by your fields, I told her I think the elves must be responsible for your people being able to grow crops in the desert. Am I right?" she said in a friendly tone, smiling warmly at the girl. Yes, as Ryker said, I am Valora. It is a pleasure to meet you. As Lu said, this is a magnificent place that you call home. I have to say, as many times as I've been to the desert, I'm a little surprised that I haven't spotted it before, the ruby dragoness said to Irina. Darian leaned against the wall beside the door leading into the Business Center. She was bouncing her heel against the wall, her hands behind her head as she looked up at the ceiling. She was bored waiting on the new arrivals and had resorted to counting the knots in the boards that made up the roof. She looked over at Verdican as he spoke, smiling at how awkward he behaved at the prospect of meeting new people. "Refugees. I bet they're refugees of a sort. And from the looks of them, I don't ever want to meet what it is they're running from. Anything that can scare a group like that is something that's best avoided," she said pensively. She laughed aloud at his last statement. "Oh Ver, I have a feeling as well. He stopped pacing, finally standing still, right next to Darian, his back straight, just as they opened up the door to walk in. Irina grinned at Ryker, "Secrets aren't good, hon, you know that. Besides, I highly doubt its that complicated. Well great to meet everyone! As for you're questions I'll take them in order. The lake was actually made by my friend Darian, who would probably love to tell you that story on her own. We grow crops with some help from the Elves... but a lot of us are half-elves as it is, so we have our own skill with crops." She took a deep breath, pushing open the door to the Business Center. "And we remain hidden through both magical wards and natural concealment. The white brick that makes up all of our buildings refracts the same color as the sand, and we use magic to conceal the lake and the crops. It's effective as long as nothing is approaching by sky, and for that conflict we usually spot the issue before hand and throw up wards above our city." She smiled, and moved to Darian and Verdican, "Hey guys! This is Soleil, the one with the Sun tattoo, Illuna, with the moon tattoo, Sasha the white wolf, Veer the incredibly large wolf and Valora, a dragoness. I'm afraid that Veer and Valora wont fit inside... so we'll have to fetch the Chief." She ran off to one of the adjacent rooms, looking for the Chief. Soleil was amazed, she didn't know that anything could be so complex, yet simple, "You're half-elves? Human and Elf? Talk about unusual." She scuffed her toe, nodding at the other two city Guards who stood along a wall, one seemed bored, the other seemed nervous for some reason. Soleil gently pressed into Illuna's mind, This place is insane. Who would have guessed that we'd find a random city in the desert with it's own personal water source. "If you didn't catch everything she said, feel free to ask me later," he said to the group. He grinned when he turned around and watched them looking everything over with awestruck faces. Even the wolves were showing interest in their surroundings. "Hello Darian, Verdican. Who did you two annoy to land guard duty? I thought the wall and recon missions were more to your liking?" he asked.
"I'm not sure she should have revealed all of that information," Darian said pensively, watching her captain retreat into the Business Center. "Hello Ryker. I should be asking what you're doing here. Didn't you go out on that recon mission with the group that left out this morning?" she asked the Werecat. She stopped kicking the wall and put her hands in her pockets, nodding to each member of the group as he introduced them. "What did Irina mean when she said you made the lake?" Lu asked curiously after introductions were made. The girl in front of her didn't look like much, but there was a hint of elven blood in the structure of her face and the slight points on the tips of her ears. I would assume that she meant the girl used magic, Valora said, looking at the guard for confirmation. The ruby dragoness looked at the fidgety guard and leaned in close, sniffing the air in front of him. She lifted her head and stared at him for a long time through one ruby-and-rust colored eye. Hello, she said after awhile. Darian smiled at the dragoness and girl. "She meant what she said, I made the lake. But no, I didn't use magic. Watch closely," she said, lifting her hand to chest height. She turned her palm up and started pulling water from the air, forcing it to coalesce into a clear orb that floated a little bit above her bare skin. When it was two-inches in diameter, she stopped calling on the water in the atmosphere and let it hover in the air over her palm. Winking at Ryker, she tossed the ball of water up into the air and commanded it to smack Verdican on the back of the neck. Re: Luck in Loss Verdican looked at Valora, "Hello, pleased to meet your acquaintance." Then he felt a cold and wet ball of water hit his neck. He wasn't mad... but he saw an opening. What a great way to show off to these strangers that they weren't to be played with. "You'll regret that, Dar."
He immediately twisted on his heels, dropping to the floor to kick out Darian's leg from under her, as quick as ever, he then used his momentum to pop up and grab onto one of the roof supports and climb up, nimbly leaping from support to support as he got several feet away from Darian. Soleil was impressed by this town, they seemed to be very much like her sort of place. She wondered what 'recon' missions they went on. From the way these people spoke it involved strength, which she had miles to spare of. Verdican was fast, she could give him that, but she knew she could probably keep up with him, maybe even go faster because of her transmission. "Are all you're guards this energetic, Ryker?" Irina glanced around spotting the Chief, "Ey, Chief! You'll find this funny, but they have a dragon with them, and she can't fit through the door all the way, so currently only her head and neck are through the door." The Chief blinked, then chuckled, "Been a long time since a dragon has come around. Re: Luck in Loss Darian yelped as Verdican kicked her feet out from under her, twisting around so that she landed on her palms and the balls of her feet. "Nice moves Ver, you almost had me," she said with a laugh, jumping straight up. At the top of her jump she reached out and tapped the roof beam he was standing on, flash freezing it with a super-slick coating of ice. "But I think I win this round," she said with a wink as she touched back down on the floor.
"I suppose you could say that. But these two are also a special kind of headcase," Ryker replied with a chuckle. "Hey now! No need for that!" the Werecat cried out in dismay as Darian lobbed a ball of water at his face. He grumbled darkly, dragging the sleeve of his shirt across his face to mop the water up. Lu giggled at the antics of the two guards, she couldn't help it. The energy of the two was quite infectious. What can you tell us about this mysterious Chief? He gave a slight bow, then strode back next to Darian, shoving her lightly with his shoulder. "No real need to tell you about him, you'll see him soon enough."
Soleil huffed, "This place is crazy." She looked around in the direction that Irina had skipped off to, and finally saw a glimpse of the blonde woman, then who she presumed to be the chief. A bulky man, large muscles and a face that looked like it enjoyed laughing. Soleil was already annoyed. Irina smiled, waltzing up to the group, "Alright everyone! This is the Chief, he's the main representative of the City." She moved aside, letting him step forward and offer his hand first to Illuna, then Soleil. His voice rumbled from his chest in a deep baritone, "Hello, travelers, I'm afraid I'm going to have to hold you up for just a few moments. It's required that we debrief all newcomers on the rules and laws of our city." He inclined his head, smiling, "First, all formal business inquiries will be settled here, at the Business Center. As you may have guessed we make much of our income on mercenary work, be that sellswords or assassins, you will come here to handle it." He glanced around, taking a breath, "Second, crime is handled by the Military, the jail is located in the Military HQ which is located in the west side of town. Depending on the offense there may or may not be a trial." He began walking to the desk at the head of the room, lifting up a few sheets of paper, "Just a moment more, then we'll be done. I simply need to record you're names, and the reason for you're stay in Vereshae and you will be on you're way." He quickly jotted down their names, awaiting their reasons. Irina grinned, she was always amused by the Chief's spiel, and wondered if he ever tired of it, "See, nothing too bad, guys. Every new person goes through the same thing. Re: Luck in Loss "Yes, I imagine guarding a wall in the middle of the desert when no one knows you're here could get boring after awhile," Lu said to Verdican, a small smile on her lips. She noticed the Chief and Irina a few seconds after Lei. The half-Shade shook his hand firmly and murmured a greeting, listening carefully to what he had to say. "We really don't have a particular reason for being here. We were simply traveling through the desert when Sasha," she indicated the white wolf, "stumbled upon Ryker. After a few tense moments we came to an understanding and here we are."
It would be nice if we could stay here for a bit before leaving. The desert is hot on my paws, but in this city the ground is cooler, Sasha said, restricting her comment to their group. Don't worry Sasha, I think we'll be alright to stay. This Chief seems like a pretty friendly fellow. As long as he feels that we don't pose an unreasonable threat I can't see any reason for him to turn us out, Valora said. She turned to the Chief, looking him up and down. Do you have accommodations large enough for a dragon? she asked him. "That's pretty much how it happened," Ryker said to the Chief, confirming Illuna's story, "They're a pretty powerful bunch, but I assure you that they, personally, do not pose a threat to the city." Darian's gaze flicked to Ryker after he spoke. She believed him when he said they were not threats themselves, but the way he said "personally" made her wonder if there was something in their pasts that might come back to bite them while in the city. She crossed her arms and looked at the twin with the sun tattoo. "Where did you say you and your sister were from? We get many visitors regularly, one of the illusion wards hides the fact that we are a mere hours travel away from Du Weldenvarden. We are far more accessible than we'd have people believe." He took a step closer, intrigued by this person, "The wall is vital to our survival, it provides stability, strength and is imposing to outsiders, yet to us it is our home and livelihood, I would not say that it is boring... it is simply just not where I am at my best."
Soleil immediately felt her hackles raise at Darian's question, "We didn't." She hated when people assumed that they would fall for that trick. "If that's it, we'd like to get a move on. I think the group has agreed that we'd like to stay a while." Soleil frowned, crossing her arms and immediately took a step backward, aligning herself with her sister. Irina smiled, "Well then, I'd say you were here for visiting then. Touristry is a big one here too." The sarcasm in her voice permeated the air and she chuckled, quieting down when she realized no one laughed at her joke. "Eh. We'll head out then, Chief. I'll debrief them on different things to do in the city." Re: Luck in Loss Darian smiled openly at Soleil, pretending she was amused. "Well surely you have some story of home you can entertain us with. It would probably be more interesting than Irina's non-stop trivia about the city," she said, grinning at her friend.
"And where would you say that you are at your best?" Lu asked. She was intrigued about everything in this city, especially the people. It was all quite fascinating. She sensed Lei's defensiveness and looked over at her twin, arching her eyebrows questioningly. She could tell her sister was irked with Darian from the way she was glaring at her with her arms crossed defensively in front of her. Irina, what is your favorite place in the city? It seems to me like a local would know all of the best places, Valora asked, looking down at her as they walked. Ryker glanced coolly from Darian to Soleil, wondering if the two were going to come to blows or just verbally joust with each other. Going by what he knew about the two girls, he couldn't see Soleil keeping her cool long enough to prevent Darian from getting the answers she wanted, directly or indirectly. They are friendly. Your interrogation is unnecessary, he said to her privately. She turned her attention onto Irina, who looked more than a little excited to take over with information. Irina's face brightened, after having fallen slightly from Darian's teasing, "Really? Well Valora, and Soleil! The tour shall begin! Some of my favorite places are of course, the pub, the Academy, or the Markets! There's always something going on here! Re: Luck in Loss Darian chuckled at Soleil as she very pointedly turned to Irina and began listening to her talk about the city. "The traders are here already?" she asked, slightly surprised. She thought they weren't supposed to be here until next week. She grinned excitedly, immediately thinking about stopping in with her favorite sweets vendor. He always had something interesting stored in the back for her. "I vote we go say hello to the traders first," she said solemnly, raising her hand.
"I second that motion," Lu laughed, raising her hand in unison with Darian. "A sniper, hunh?" she said, looking him up and down. "I buy it. You certainly look stealthier than Darian, and you're definitely quieter than Irina," she said teasingly, grinning cheekily at the female guards. She glanced over at her sister, who was acting very enamored with what Irina had to say. What did you do to Darian? she asked, mentally poking her. Ryker sighed exasperatedly when Darian became distracted by the idea of sweets. You're not very determined for an interrogator, you know that, right? he asked her, silently chuckling. She looked back at him over her shoulder, sticking her tongue out like a child. "I think the pub sounds like a nice place to start. We can all get a drink before we start traipsing around the entire city," he said to Irina. I don't mind where we begin, it's all fascinating to me, Valora said as the others called out places they'd like to visit. Re: Luck in Loss Verdican blushed, scuffing the toe of his boot in the dirt, "You're mostly correct. Darian is definitely our front line girl. She can wreck a platoon of Galbatorix's finest knights, just with that rope javelin of hers. She doesn't necessarily kill them either. Irina's a really good mix of the two of us. She can destroy someone up close or far away. She's great at sneaking around, but she can also be loud." He shrugged, glancing up at Illuna, "We're well rounded."
Soleil perked up at that, "Ah, the pub! I can get in on that! How about we go get us some alcohol, then take a gander at the markets. Maybe I can find me a new dagger.. this one I have just isn't... cutting it." She chuckled darkly, fingering the sheath of her dagger, before dropping her hand. I did nothing. I think Ryker said something to her. I was making it clear that she should back off though. Our business is nothing but our own. I don't care if the cat knows more than he should. Its the stigma of his breed, but this over confident welp? No. I will not stand for it. Re: Luck in Loss "I can see how your unit would be effective with a mix like that," Lu said approvingly. With the different skill sets of each member, it was a very well-rounded combat team. She knew how well she and her sister complemented each other in battle, having a third member added to the mix would only make them even more deadly. "Lei, don't you think it would be wiser to get a drink after you haggle with the traders? If you're falling over drunk, don't expect me to save you from getting fleeced," she warned her.
Growling at her like that will only make her more suspicious and determined to find out what we're hiding. She's only trying to protect her home, she sighed, glancing at the blonde-haired guard out of the corner of her eye. "Then again, Lu makes a good point," Ryker said with a chuckle, "Although I doubt Lei will allow herself to get drunk, so I think we're safe." Let's all get something to drink first. If Lei does let herself get drunk before bartering, then I'll have no pity for her if she wastes all of her money, Valora said, echoing Illuna. The ruby dragoness looked at Ryker suddenly. It just occurred to me that you've been in human form this whole time. Wouldn't you be more comfortable in your real body? she asked him. Valora turned to Soleil, frowning at her. No more puns for you, she said dryly. Ryker laughed at Valora's question. "You're kidding, right? With it this hot outside? No thank you. I would bake before I even finished the change," he said. "If you're curious as to what I really look like, I'll show you after we're all done and settled in somewhere cool," he promised. He didn't mind changing in front of them, he was used to people being curious about it. Darian snatched a pebble off of the ground and lobbed it at Ryker. "Show-off," she teased when she heard him talking to Valora about showing his cat-form. "Well Lei, looks like you're on your own. I also won't stop you from making a fool of yourself if it comes down to it," she said cheekily. "The pub is just up ahead. Re: Luck in Loss "Ha! Lu as if! You know it takes barrels of alcohol to get me drunk!" Soleil, smirked, her hands flexing as the sun beat down on her skin. She glanced over at Darian, deciding to leave her be for now, but definitely not opening her mouth nor mind to the irritating girl.
"Ryker, I think sun baked would be an awfully good look on you." She chuckled moving forward to be on par with Irina. At the mention of the markets Irina perked up even more, "Oh! The markets are amazing, located near to most of the apartments and homes," She grinned motioning toward the left side of the looping path where there were barely noticeable clouds in the air, and several horse drawn carts coming and going, "And if you are looking for extra weapons Darian's mom is one of the best smiths that lives in the city! Like really! She's incredible!" Irina jumped, doing a small twist in the air to point directly at Darian, her finger coming inches from the other girls nose. She stared with a grin for a long moment before leaning slightly forward to poke her nose. "Right, Darian? Oh and yes, silly. They came in a day ago, very late in the evening. I was on watch that night. It looked like they had some really awesome sweets this time. I could smell the sugar off some of the carts... Oh golly I want some." She removed her hand and sighed, immediately turning to the road again and taking off in a brisk walk toward the tents and bustle. "Illuna I apologize for my friends, they are excitable." Verdican mumbled to their new companion, with a slight crook to his eyes. "But yes, the pub is a pleasant place. Valora, Im sure the barkeep will be enamored with you, and would most likely gladly let you tear the roof off of his establishment if you so pleased." He gave a small smile, to indicate that he was joking and noticed Irina's behaviour a moment later. "Irina! Don't shove you're hands in peoples faces! Dear god these people probably think we're nuts. I'm not nuts. I don't know them. Either of them." His words started loud and petered off into semi-furious embarrassed mumbling. Then realized Irina was taking off without them, and turned his body still facing the ground and started moving.
