Has anyone ever been in competitive speech?

I'm pretty sure no one has even heard of it around hear

I was pretty good, i've been in it for several years. I've been runner up to state two years ago, and state speech competitor last year. In the humorous category too (it's the most largely attended category in MN, 400 members strong)

I can officially say I rank about 12 out of some 400 competitors.

But not #1

I'd like to try, I would probably kill myself from embarrasment though. If anyone knows how much I stink at speeches, ask DTV

You've been in plays though,

Competitive speech isn't so much giving a speech, but doing a little mini-play...except you're the only one in it.

But the thing is, you memorize lines and stuff in plays, in speeches you kinda wing it, kidna don't. I was never good at it.

I have never heard of this, but it sounds interesting. What are some of the topics that competitors have had to talk about?

Fronzz, with speech I have never really winged it, you get a script, you memerize the script, add actions, and that's youre piece. It's just like a play, except you don't have props.

There are tons of categories in competitive speech around here.

Humorous - You perform a humorous script, a propless play.
Drama- Same as above except a dramatic piece.
Dramatic Duo - You can do the same as above, except you have a parter.
Prose - You read a piece of literature, and act it out.
Poetry - You Read Poetry
Discussion - It's kinda like Debate
Informative - It's like a business presentation
Storytelling - You memerize 9 stories draw from a hat, and tell that story in a creative way



There are sooooo many categories. It's lots of fun

It's a bit different from where i'm at. The rule is that you can't move your legs, you can pivot, and turn in circles, but you can't move your leges.

Body language is definately very important, that's one reason why they made the no walking rule, it definately makes it more challenging for the competitor to get their point across.

You can kick legs, or pivot. Just no walking or anything like that. It's kinda confusing, and easy to get disqualified if you're not carefull.

I think it sounds cool to do things the way you do them...it would definately add some much needed variety to speech.

People do a lot of weird things here too, it's a bit different though. We put more emphasis on upper body and vocal expressions.

I actually used stuttering in one of my characters last year.

One of the people I played was a nerd who was picked on, so in turn he started screaming at people at the graduation speech. I figured stuttering at times of high intensity would be a way to turn down the hectic pace (it was humorous piece after all)

I just got an 1100 dollar scholarship for my speech skills!!!! w00t

I'm registered as a speech communication major, and i'll be doing college level speech with one of the top teams in the country. I'm excited
