Of names and love
I believe Murtagh and Nasuada pairing had potential.
1. He kidnapped her himself in fourth book, and even before that, he admired her from afar. 2. She feels the same about him, as insinuated in book one. 3. It was because of her that his name changed, releasing him from his service to Galbatorix and enabling him to kill the hated tzar. That is the thing called love. Love can do miracles and Murtagh turning on Galbatorix was one of them.
All in all, they had potential, but an evil called 'situation' ripped it to shreds.

Re: Of names and love
It's not really a spoiler anymore. They may have had some sort of minor potential but in the grand sphere of things they didn't. There was nothing that insinuated that Nasuada would ever have the potential to have an egg hatch for her and that's where the line is drawn. Murtagh is strong in a sense but still very vulnerable and confused and what not. He probably wouldn't be able to handle only having her for a very short time of his life than greatly outliving her. Plus the situation that they are in they would not be accepted at all. Nasuada would have to maintain a duty to her people and getting together with Murtagh would lose her a lot of trust and respect.
