Post Re: Mourning
Taren watched the images of a war-torn Alagaesia roll through his head in sad silence. He had seen much of this during his travels during the last few months. The one bright spot of hope in the bleakness was the young human Rider Eragon and his equally young dragon Saphira. But despite their youth, Taren firmly believed they were more than capable of doing whatever it took to bring peace to Alagaesia once more. He only hoped they weren't destroyed in the process.

He looked at Medalanim for a moment before he replied. Yes, they are connected to Brom. Eragon and Saphira were taught by him in the beginning, before he sacrificed himself to save Eragon from being murdered by the Ra'zac. It was a blessing for him to go finally, his Saphira was killed in the fighting at Doru Araeba and he had been alone for so long. It was a long time after that before Eragon found out who Brom truly was to him. There was an assassin of Morzan's called the Black Hand. In reality she was a woman named Selene; Brom discovered this and he infiltrated Morzan's castle to take her out. Instead, they fell in love. Out of that love came Eragon. Selene had hidden herself away in her hometown until she gave birth, and once she had, she left the child with her family for them to raise. It must have been very hard, but after what Morzan did to their son, I don't blame her. he said quietly, watching her face.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean let Taren tell the story of Selene and Brom, closing her eyes and listening. Such a tragic tale, leaving Eragon devoid of everything he had once loved and had learned to love. She opened her eyes and sighed. What intrigues me is why she named him Eragon. Was it on purpose or by accident? Did she know of the power of the name that she chose for her son? Surely knowledge of the first Dragon Rider was still whispered about and she would know, especially when she was the Black Hand of Morzan. she mused. She tilted her head when she felt three minds approaching. She grimaced. Speak of the devil, here comes the other son. she muttered under her breath. She glanced at Medalanim and Taren, her navy blue eyes pleading. Please don't hurt them. All three of them, as you saw in my memories, are name-slaves. she said tiredly. She looked back up and saw two winged shapes approaching; one ruby-red, the other sienna-orange.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim smiled inwardly at the knowledge that Brom had at least survived the battle, and the. She knew him, and his dragon, Saphira as dear friends. But if what Taren had told her was true, then Medalanim was there to witness Saphira's final moments. She did remember her angrily charging towards Morzan, but that was all she could remember before Solir was mortally wounded.

Saphira's unforgettable last conversation to Medalanim concerning the battle also echoed in her head:
If we are not to see the end of this day, then from the heavens I swear that I shall rain down the greatest storms and desolation upon Galbatorix and his lands, making him completely regret his decision to rule over Alagaësia! Medalanim then answered back to her with a laugh, And then may you guide the winds under the wings of those who oppose him to victory.

The memory touched Medalanim's heart, and she prayed softly with closed eyes, May you guide the winds under my wings to victory, my friend.

She then opened her eyes and turned to attention to the conversation of Eragon's mother and namesake. It is indeed a strange coincidence for someone named after the elf who ended Du Fyrn Skulblaka to be the one who opposes Galbatorix. And for his bloodline to be in such a tangled one. To be both the son of an agent for Galbatorix's greatest ally and also the son to the Rider's greatest agent during, and I assume after the Rider war. It's extremely interesting at the least. And you say Morzan had a son?

But Medalanim was cut off when she noticed the colored figures in the sky. Medalanim nodded to Lean and backed off into her cave, motioning for Taren to follow her in. Don't worry about them spotting us. . . My cave is more than just comfortable and pretty.

She waited for Taren to move past, and grabbed a dark fabric from a crevice in the frame of the entrance. She tugged at it once, and it flew out as if something else was pulling it because of the previous spells that still worked. It locked onto the other side of the frame, and smoothed out. From the inside, the cloth was thin enough to see what was happening outside, but from the outside, the cloth gave off a magical illusion as if the cave was closed by a stone door, taking the required energy from Medalanim. Yet it still would give way like a fabric, so if needed, Medalanim and Taren could come out quickly. Medalanim then shielded her mind and watched patiently.

She did believe Lean on the point that Galbatorix's servants were name-slaves, and didn't want to be, but she also knew that their oaths might make them do something that they didn't expect. So she was ready if they did.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren's head snapped around when Lean spoke of the approach of the other son, a low growl shaking the ground beneath his feet. He looked at Lean, the pupils of his eyes narrowed until they were barely visible. I'll do my best to avoid hurting them, but if they sense us and attack, I will defend myself, he answered. It was his deepest desire at the moment that he wouldn't have to harm the younglings, and so he retreated swiftly into Medalanim's cave. He watched carefully through the screen the blue dragoness had pulled across the entrance to conceal it, his whole body tense as he watched the two dragons come closer.

The two of you do realize they probably already saw us, not to mention our scent floating around everywhere, he pointed out, his mind racing as he tried to think of a way to covertly obliterate their smell from the surrounding area.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean nodded to both Medalanim and Taren gratefully, glancing at the former a moment. Yes, Morzan had a son. You are about to meet him. His name is Murtagh, the Rider of the ruby male, Thorn. she said quietly, turning. And thank you, both of you. she added. At Taren's reminder she smiled. Her wings lifted from her back and beat powerfully, summoning a strong wind to sweep through the clearing. After a bit she folded her wings and glanced behind her, navy blue eyes sparkling. Now all that should be left of your scents will be too faint to track, at least easily. she said, then shifted her attention to Thorn, who was landing a few dragonlengths away. Murtagh dropped from the saddle and stormed toward her, his gray eyes seething,"You idiotic, deer-brained, slavering old hag!" roared the boy. She flinched, knowing he could wield powerful magic if he wished it, and also knowing that Galbatorix might have told the boy to punish her here. She was proven correct when something hot lashed at her foreleg, making her grunt and shift her weight off that leg. She scowled down at Murtagh and lifted her upper lip to show him her teeth. I am not Galbatorix's lapdog to come to heel when he commands it. I do what I wish now, and you know it. she hissed. The sienna-orange dragoness stepped forward and snapped her jaws together. Stop acting high and mighty, Murtagh. You're just jealous because Lee is free of control. Keia retorted. Lean snorted, then winced as another line of fire appeared on her paw. She snarled at Murtagh and pulled her leg back. You've made your point, Murtagh. she growled softly. The boy planted his hands on his hips and glowered up at her,"Galbatorix wants you to return to him immediately. We are to escort you back, Keia is to stay behind and search for the other two presences that he sensed when he was pushed away from you. Please don't make my job any more difficult than it has to be, Lean." sighed Murtagh, and his shoulders abruptly slumped. Lean's eyes softened but she still refused to move. No. I am not his pet any longer. she said firmly. Murtagh looked pained at her reply.

- - - - - - - - - -

Keia glanced at the place that Lean had indicated with a discreet twitch of her tail. Ah, so that's where they were hiding. She snorted as she watched Lean and Murtagh, rolling her eyes a bit. She extended her mind out, avoiding Murtagh and Thorn's, and brushed it against something. Two somethings. Two someones, actually. She sat on her haunches and started cleaning her talons. Lean, Murtagh, cool it, alright? You both are irritable and snapping at each other isn't helping at all. So shut up and calm down. Galbatorix did not give specific orders for you to return right away, so lay back and chill for a bit. Sheesh, you two remind me of Shruikan when he gets something under his scales. she scolded, then turned her mental attention to the hidden presences. Hello, I'm Autarkeia Fincayra Vera, please call me Keia. Lean gave me the slip you two were in here. she said to Medalanim and Taren privately.

OOC:
Medalanim and Taren could hear everything that was said, just so you know. By the way, if you want, Bris, Medalanim could recognize Keia's name if you want. She was young during the Fall, but old enough to fight at Galbatorix's side.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim mentally gave her thanks to Lean once more once she took away her scents, and then shielded her mind firmly. She inwardly sighed in a sad pitty once the two arrived. Especially towards Murtagh and Thorn.

Murtagh reminded Medalanim only of his accursed father, but far weaker, unable to live up to his inheritance, and even more so, he looked confused, hurt, and unwilling. Angry that he was forced to do Galbatorix's will, and maybe even more so that he duels against his own half-brother who leads the Varden. It even caused her to pity him when he insulted and lashed out against Lean. . . Compared to Morzan, he was a disgrace.

Thorn looked far better, obviously being far more intelligent than the bloody brute which was Morzan's name-cursed dragon, but he also looked tortured, and his eyes reflected extreme youth, and his body was almost ill proportioned as if he was molded for battle and only that. Indeed, he too had shared his deal of torment, and he probably regretted everything he did for Galbatorix. Although he was not a terrifying dragon, that was for sure, and Medalanim's heart almost pleaded out for his freedom.

However, the Sienna dragon caught Medalanim's eye. She was oddly familiar, and familiar in a bad way. Even though Lean told her that this one was a sympathetic friend, she took no chances. As soon as she contacted her, Medalanim focused the residue energy in her scales to form a fiery barrier around her inner mind. If she dared enter too far, she would be burned out like a fly under a dragon's flame. Immediately though, she recognized the sly voice, which only caused a sickening pit to form in her stomach as her face pulled back into the deepest angry snarl she has ever given for years.

Why hello, Keia. I believe we have met. Medalanim said casually with an edge of vile hatred. The golden-orange youngling at Galbatorix's side that she remembered in the Rider War was none other than the dragon she was speaking to right now. She remembered who she had injured and who she had killed during the first half of that bloody battle. If it were not for the situation, she would have gladly killed her right then and there. She even had to hold back herself from launching all her leftover magic to burn Keia's mind, just to hide their presence.

Taren snarled silently at the way Murtagh spoke to Lean, but he didn't break through the screen Medalanim had pulled across the entrance, no matter how badly he wanted to teach the youngling a lesson. The tip of his tail twitched irritably, and when Keia spoke to them, it stopped in mid-twitch. He looked at Lean in surprise before what the sienna dragoness said sank in. Greetings Keia, I am Taren, he said cautiously. He noticed that Medalanim seemed to recognize the dragoness, and not in a good way.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia flicked her eyes to the hidden cave at the responce that she got, her pupils narrowing. She recognized that voice...She thought back to the Fall, to the battle at Vroengard. Where had she heard that voice before? She scowled lightly, and then she paused. Medalanim? she asked, slightly surprised, though not at all surprised by the venom in the other dragoness's tone. Medalanim, I was a hatchling then and caught in Galbatorix's spell. I thought he was always right, that he was good-natured and only wished the best for Alagaësia... she said softly, shifting from foot to foot. I have changed, Medalanim. I have seen Galbatorix for what he truly is; a ruthless tyrant. Please let me show you that before you pass judgment over me. she murmured. And a pleasure, Taren. she said to the male. She glanced at Lean and Murtagh, who were still arguing, though quietly, off to the side. Thorn had curled up for a nap and now resembled a scaly ruby red ball.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim's snarl faded, but the anger still raged in her mind. Yes, it is me. You did not expect me to be alive did you? You were there when Galbatorix lay open Solir, and I fell out of the sky. Medalanim's heart ached with a century's worth of sorrow and hate. I survived however, and I've been in hiding for the past century. Only now have I returned to give the tyrant what he deserves.

She sighed inwardly, soft enough so that no one outside could hear. Before you say anything, I will at least forgive you for your ignorance. That man has a slicker tongue than a snake. But after all that I've experienced Keia, it will take much more than your word to satisfy me. I hold little mercy for anyone who fights for Galbatorix, nameslave, or not. It took Lean a while to gain my trust, and to be honest I still am not completely open to her, neither will I be to you until I can be absolutely sure that you can be trusted, and if I ever think that you are a danger to me, Taren, or Lean, I have the power to destroy you on the spot. Understand? Medalanim spoke with an air of finality and truth, making sure that Keia knew that she was severely outmatched if she tried to fight.

Taren looked swiftly at Medalanim when she spoke of Keia being present at the fighting at Doru Araeba. He looked at the sienna dragoness and scrunched his eyes up in concentration. If he really focused, he could vaguely remember seeing her as his parents were forcing him to flee. His lip curled up slightly and he glowered at her, but didn't say anything. He was a firm believer in the fact that people could change. It was just harder to face when it was someone from his own past.

How long must we cower here? Can't you convince them to leave? he asked her. A glint of appreciation flashed in his eyes at Medalanim's words. He knew full well that she was more than capable of carrying out the grim promise. He frowned slightly though and looked sideways at her. Surely the stress of the day must be getting to her. All of the magic use and now this high-adrenaline atmosphere wasn't exactly what he had in mind when he said he wanted her to rest before her next lesson.

Keia looked away, her eyes downcast. I understand, Medalanim. I thank you for your forgiveness and will do my best to live up to it. Truly I am sorry. I have no wish to be a monster any longer, cursed and hated like a foul lizard wherever I go. she said, murmuring the last two sentences in the Ancient Language, so that Medalanim would understand that she truly meant what she said. The sienna dragoness glanced at Lean and Murtagh off to the side. Why don't you three go hunt or something. You being here masks the scents that I can pick up and how potent they are. Git, now. she barked, scowling. Murtagh huffed but obeyed, knowing that her seniority made her in charge of the group. Thorn raised his wings and took to the air. Lean glanced at her. Well done. I'm already sated, however, so I'll stay. said the ancient black. Keia nodded, then looked directly at the place where Taren and Medalanim were hiding. Yes I can but I can't make it obvious, or they will report to Galbatorix that I'm acting suspicious, and then my cover is blown. she said with a shrug. The sienna dragones eyed Medalanim, then ruffled her wings. Will the knowledge of my True Name make you trust me any more? I'll give it willingly to you and Taren if it will make any difference. she said, and shrugged again.

Post Re: Mourning
Lowering her head, Medalanim relaxed while sighing. She glanced at the form of Thorn as he flew off. I trust your abilities to convince them to leave, even if it has to be subtly. That boy may be Morzan's heir, but certainly he is not Morzan. . . Actually, if he had been standing in Murtagh's place, he would have already known something was afoot. We're still safe because of Murtagh's blind anger and Thorn's naive ignorance. Pitiful, that such young, confused hatchlings must attempt to live up to a man that would have been better to have never existed. . . That is, if Morzan is actually dead. Medalanim mournfully said, admitting that she did not know if the monster or his beastly dragon were still alive. She assumed that they must have destroyed themselves or each other due to their unstable nature.

When Keia offered to tell Medalanim and Taren her True Name, Medalanim's gaze immediately locked on Keia, her muscles tightened, and her jaw dropped slightly from the immense shock she felt. Every shred of knowledge she had been given and had taught went against this notion; to give oneself up so freely, and having such an important piece of this dragon's very being being offered to her as a gift stunned her. Have the morals and laws regarding true names disintegrated over the last century? She thought inwardly before answering to Keia, As tempting, and strategically powerful your offer is, Keia, Medalanim admitted, I do not know what to say. If you remember my position at all during the times of the Order, I was practically an Elder Dragon. I would have been one if I had not refused Vrael's invitation. And as thus, you would know that every part of my past experience is against one passing their true name to another so freely, even more so as a gift of trust to one that openly does not trust you. It is a very sensitive matter. . . Are you very sure that you would want to do this? Placing your very soul into my care?

Post Re: Mourning
Taren watched Thorn and Murtagh go in silence. He fully agreed with the others that the boy was no Morzan, which gave the old bronze a sense of hope for the younglings futures. Maybe if they survived the fight against Galbatorix, the resistance could help them.

He turned to Keia in shock when she so abruptly offered them her true name. He looked at her in astonishment and vigorously shook his big bronze head. No, I will not have that sort of power over someone I barely know, he said without hesitation. He would have to just trust her. His wings twitched at the thought, but he said no more.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia sighed. Morzan and that ghastly brute of a dragon of his are both dead. I heard the report and saw their bodies myself. Brom killed Morzan himself. she curled her upper lip. I celebrated when that occurred. Morzan was mutually hated by everyone in the Empire. at the shocked expressions on their faces, she had to smile a bit. She nodded to Taren. That is fine, I won't force it on you. she said, then looked at Medalanim. Yes, I know of your position, or the position you would have had. And as for what you have learned in the past....Everything has changed. she said sadly. She shook her head and sighed, then looked up at the older dragoness, her pupils narrowing. And yes, I am sure. Medalanim, I am a traitorous snake, and I know it. I've killed and slaughtered so many in Galbatorix's name, my talons should be stained red with their blood. I have become a monster. If the king ever guesses my new name, which I'm sure he will, he is very apt at the practice, I want someone to have the power to stop me from killing any more. One already does. I assume you remember Natagath and Violeta? They are both alive and living in another country. Natagath has my name. she paused and looked at the ground, then back up at the dragoness. And I know your morals, Medalanim. You would not use my name to hurt me, not unless I was deliberately, willingly, attacking someone you care for, and also to stop me if I have been ordered to do something. If I didn't know that I wouldn't even consider telling you my Name. Though you wouldn't precisely be possessing my very soul. Someone else has my Eldunari. But yes, I would trust you with my Name. she said flatly, sitting on her haunches.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim inwardly smiled at the news of Morzan's death. It would not be any more appropriate that Brom was his killer, as he was the one Morzan hurt most upon his defection.

Medalanim then looked down with a grim demeanor, her eyelids lowering. So our True Names are no longer the passages of inner strength, power, and personal revelation that were held sacred to protect. No. They have become objects. Keys to control another being that you can simply hand off to another. It sickens me to see such glorious and precious things of the world degraded to pieces of a game, yet although I would rather take no part, you are right.

Medalanim's head lifted, and her glowing eyes held an aura of distaste. I do not remember Natagath or Violeta, but you are still right to think that giving your name to me will give me the control to prevent something that you do not wish to do. Yet, I still fear what may happen if I try to prevent an attack. . .

Medalanim's eyes reflected the wisdom of her training as she spoke. A very wise dragon once told me: 'True names and oath are both means to control a being, yet when the orders clash, one must give way to the other; Unless the command of one absolutely cancels out the other one, some element of the opposing command will still affect the being. And the rare case where the two commands oppose each other, and yet are not exactly opposite to each other, the being shall be destroyed.'
It is the reason why I am so reluctant to accept your offer, Keia. If I had time and the concentration, I could do it and you would come out unscathed. If we were in a more hectic situation, however, I could miss something, and you could be harmed or worse, or you would still have to do something I didn't want. So I am more asking you now if you are still willing to give me your name, even with this life threatening danger. If you are, then I will. . . reluctantly. . . accept.
And even if I do, it must come with these conditions: I have to test your name, to make sure it is true, and I have to search your mind, to make sure that you are not planning something behind our backs. I have seen offers and repentant speeches much like yours during the Rider war, and then the day after they turn and murder many people. So you must understand the reasoning behind it.

She briefly turned to Taren, Taren, I applaud your reluctance to accept her True Name because everyone and even those with experience should be taught to never immediately accept. However, she is right. If possible, it would be good for one of us to learn it, for all of our safety. Yes, you are teaching me about controlling my magic, but on these more sensitive matters, I know that I have the most experience. And if both of us knew the name, the danger for Keia grows dramatically. So I think that if anything, I solely should be responsible of bearing that burden.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren dipped his head slightly to Keia when she said she wouldn't force her name on him and sat back to listen to the others. They both made good points, and in the end he was glad that Medalanim accepted Keia's offer. You don't have that much more experience than me, he said to Medalanim, his bronze eyes twinkling with amusement. His gaze turned serious though, and he nodded in agreement. You are right though, at least one of us should know. It's for your sake as much as it is ours, he added, directing the last statement to Keia.

What do you think of all this, Lean? You have been rather silent on this matter, he asked the ancient black dragoness. He supposed that she wouldn't want to know Keia's true name because of the danger of Galbatorix ripping it from her mind if he attacked her again as he had earlier, but he still wanted to know what she thought.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia closed her eyes and listened to Medalanim. Her breathing caught for a moment when the subject of two commands fighting against each other came up, but smoothed out quickly. She sighed when Taren asked Lean what she thought of it. The ancient black snorted. Keia has the right to do what she wishes. That has not changed even in the chaos of the land. I too am saddened by the concept that True Names are no longer cherished and sacred, but used as a controlling tool to gain the upper hand and make someone else do the dirty work. But, in this case, I agree with Keia. Sometimes it is simply better to let someone else be in control. murmured the old female. Keia huffed and opened her eyes and looked at Medalanim. I accept your terms, and the danger. To be honest it probably would be better if that actually did happen. said the sienna dragoness bitterly. Lean, you will have to go human to take off the charm that Natagath gave me, so that Medalanim can access my mind. Or I can go human and slip it off. Whichever. she said with a shrug. Whenever your ready. she said to the older dragoness.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim raised her head high and gazed upon Keia with a stone cold stare. Then I am ready to accept your true name, Keia. She then switched to her speech, invoking the power of her magic with each word to make it even more true and to make the air hum with power. "Un eka heita eom luka onr nama bara när den er parfr, un bara eom gaemot Galbatorxs lystya." (And I promise to use your name only when necessary, and only to contradict Galbatorix's wishes.)

The magic set itself and a shimmering glow flowed down Medalanim's body as she opened her eyes, feeling rejuvenated from the flow of magical energy. Now, even if I am captured, I can never use your name against you Keia. . . But right just then, she paused and cursed inwardly as she heard faint wingbeats from behind the crater rim. But if you are going to tell me, it should be now. I sense Murtagh and Thorn arriving. She backed away and hid again, motioning for Taren to follow.

Post Re: Mourning
You are very wise. I agree, but I wanted to hear what you thought about it, Taren said to Lean. He cocked an eyebrow and tilted his head to the side when Keia spoke of "going human". He was mystified as to what that could mean, but before he could ask, Medalanim heard Thorn and Murtagh approaching. He backed swiftly into the cave, then settled carefully on the sandy floor to watch the dragoness's outside. He turned his gaze away from them every now and then to rake the skies for the enemy, making sure they weren't in sight yet.

Just as an added precaution, he accessed his magic and used it to create a web covering Medalanim. Illusion magic was his strongest tool, next to healing magic, and when he was done, Medalanim was completely hidden from sight. Now if Thorn approached faster than was comfortable, he wouldn't see the giant blue dragon sitting in front of him. If you feel something strange, don't worry, it's just me. I've used magic to hide you from Murtagh and Thorn's view. But try and hurry, Murtagh is very skilled with magic. I won't be able to keep up something this big right in front of him without him sensing it, the bronze said to Medalanim.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia relaxed as Medalanim swore in the Ancient Language. She blinked gratefully at the older dragoness, then tilted her head as she too began to hear Thorn's return. She chuckled at Taren's expression of her words "going human", her aquamarine eyes glittering with humor. She shook herself, her scales rustling with the motion, and then her form began to shrink, slowly. Her wings morphed into her body, her scales smoothed out and lightened to a healthy tan. Talons shortened to fingers and toes and nails, her snout flattened into a human nose and mouth, her horns softened and lengthened into sienna colored waist length hair. A few tendons popped and snapped, readjusting to the smaller twoleg shape. As a final change, clothes shimmered around her body; a loose white tunic with gold trim, and dark green pants. Her sword belt hung low on her hips. Around her neck on a leather cord was a tear shaped pendant. She reached behind her neck and untied the cord and slipped it into a pouch on her belt. She looked at where Medalanim had been. My mind is completely free of protection now. she said softly. She opened her mind to the dragoness, but only to her. There were things in her past that were best left untouched unless necessary. My True Name is...Hljödhr Dautr abr Dauth un Fyrn (Silent Daughter of Death and War)... she whispered, shuddering as she spoke her own Name into Medalanim's mind. You can see everything and anything that you wish in my thoughts and memories. I have nothing to hide, nothing I will hide. she hesitated. I must warn you, however...My years as a hatchling were...unpleasant. she murmured. She glanced up at Thorn, who was approaching quickly now.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim blinked in surprise and stepped back as Keia changed. She had heard of shapeshifting dragons before, but had not directly seen them change before. Also, the form that Keia had changed into was small. . . Very small. The last time that Medalanim had lay eyes on a human was during the battle of Doru Araeba, and she had grown considerably since then. Keia's human form seemed no more than a bug to her. Medalanim thought to herself that it would be very convenient to have the ability to shrink to the small size of a human, but then again, she was most comfortable in her body, and wouldn't have it any other way. Besides, humans can't fly.

Very strange. . . Medalanim noted. She also turned and gave a small mental nod to Taren in thanks for the illusion spell. Turning back, she shivered as Keia then gave her true name. It obviously held an aura of power, but the meaning of it was unnerving.

When Keia opened her mind, Medalanim hastily entered, but before delving into the deeper areas, she warned Keia, I'm sorry in advance. This might hurt. And do not attempt to resist, for the magic in my mind will burn any retaliation. She then plunged full force into every corner of Keia's mind like a thousand spearheads, and had soon infiltrated her entire consciousness.

She had done this before to many other people and dragons in training, so she remembered how to proceed with the best efficiency; she skimmed over normal memories, and examined those with repeating themes or ones which were held in more secure areas in the mind. Any barriers she encountered she broke through without pause.

Many memories passed through her vision in the span of a few seconds. . . Some were of Galbatorix giving orders, and others were of Keia being punished, and others of Keia bringing many people and dragons to their end. She expected those, however, and kept going back and back through Keia's past, all the way to when she hatched.

Medalanim determined only a few things from the quick search: Keia was telling the truth about her remorseful feelings or otherwise she was an expert in falsifying memories and emotions, Keia's life was brutal, and filled with blood, blind hatred, confusion, and death, yet she still held a secret desire to live in peace with her family, and then the most concerning memory of all, Keia's method of taking out enemies specialized in tricking those she had intended to kill; gaining their trust, and stabbing them in the back. That worried Medalanim most of all, but if she did intend to do that at all, her true name might be enough to stop her.

Medalanim finished the search with a sigh and immediately left Keia's mind. But before she could do anything else, Thorn landed at the edge of the cliff, and Medalanim shrunk back into the cave and firmly shielded her mind. Fortunately the thick ash cloud raised from Thorn's wings was enough to hide the fabric door opening briefly. Medalanim then patiently watched and waited from the inside, to see what Morzan's son and his dragon would do, and whether if Keia could persuade them to leave.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren blinked in surprise as Keia shifted from dragon to human before his very eyes. He watched her body shrink, her wings melt into her body, and sienna colored hair sprout from her head. It was all very interesting to watch, but to Taren, it looked like it might be painful. That is a most interesting skill, but not one I think I would want, he said to the sienna, chuckling. He pulled out of her mind when he felt Medalanim's mind approaching, and sat back to watch the exchange between the two.

Just before Medalanim pulled out of Keia's mind, he heard two loud thumps and looked up. It was Thorn's wingbeats, he was now right on top of them, and coming back in for a landing. Taren hissed softly, Medalanim was still out there in the open. His eyes flicked back to the blue dragoness as she swiftly ducked into the cave under cover of the ash cloud Thorn had stirred up. When she was inside, he reached out with one paw and closed the curtain she had used earlier.

It's alright, I don't think they sensed you. I know they didn't see you, he said quickly. What about Keia? Is she trustworthy? he added privately.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia felt a shiver go up her spine as Medalanim entered her mind. She made a mental acknowledgment to the dragoness's warning, tensing her muscles slightly. She half-lidded her eyes, stiffening with surprise as Medalanim, almost literally, exploded her consciousness inside of Keia's. Her first instinct, born from years of serving Galbatorix, was to defend herself, get the foreign mind out of her own. She shuddered and forced the instinct away. After several long seconds, the older dragoness withdrew her mental probe and returned to the cave to hide. A shiver went down her spine and she opened her eyes fully. She turned to look at Thorn and Murtagh, her aquamarine eyes narrowing,"Why don't you two go back to Uru'baen? I can handle things here. And that includes Lean." she added sharply when the young human opened his mouth to counter her. "Lean wouldn't hurt me in a million years, and I need her sharp senses. You doubt that I can take care of myself?" she said darkly, and she fingered the pommel of her sword absently. Murtagh gulped, eying her warily, but didn't back down. He was stubborn; that much he had inherited from Morzan. Keia peeled back her human lips in a snarl/smile, her eyes glittering,"I am bigger, faster, stronger, and older than the both of you combined. The only one that outranks me in this situation is Lean, and she won't make a move against me because she's too gentle-hearted." she growled,"Now git. Before I kick your sorry behinds halfway back to Uru'baen, then drag you the rest of the way with my talons, for you to be punished for insubordination of your superior." her voice was low and menacing, soft, bewitching. A skill that she had learned from Galbatorix himself. She saw Thorn swallow hard and felt an instants regret for threatening them. The ruby red male glanced back at his Rider, then Murtagh grimaced,"Hope you know what your doing, Autarkeia." he muttered, before tapping Thorn's shoulder. The male sprang into the air and flew briskly away, quickening his pace even more when she stabbed at his mind sharply. Lean snorted when they were gone. Gentle-hearted? asked the ancient black dragoness, humor sparkling in her navy blue eyes. Keia shrugged. "Well, you are." she said teasingly. She squealed as a giant paw lashed out and gently knocked her onto her back, pinning her lightly to the ground. She wiggled and squirmed until she was breathless, both from her struggles and because she was laughing. She rarely laughed, so her vocal cords were unused to the sound. It sounded warm and soothing, a bit raspy from little use, but it was a laugh nonetheless. "Oh let me up, you scaleball." she grinned up at Lean.

Medalanim turned to Taren, concern etched in her expression. For the most part, yes. But there is something that concerns me. . . It's her preferred way of killing. Tricking her target to trust her and then slaying them when their guard is down. If her true name is in fact true, then it could stop her, but possibly not in time. She would never harm Lean, I know, but I advise to keep your guard up.

When Keia got rid of Thorn and Murtagh, she waited until the duo was out of sight before slowly opening the enchanted curtain, revealing the inside of the cavern and the glittering glass flame sculpture. If that was all you needed to do than why didn't you do so in the first place? Medalanim asked Keia, who was pinned under Lean's paw. I am also sorry to interrupt your laughter, but you have yet to fulfill the next half of your promise.

She's a soldier of Galbatorix, that does not surprise me, Taren said back to Medalanim. The idea that a servant of Galbatorix would play with it's victims before killing them didn't faze him at all. After all, it was not that different from Galbatorix's preferred method of execution.

He watched Thorn and Murtagh leave, then silently left the cave behind Medalanim. He chuckled in amusement as he watched Lean play with Keia, but the laughter didn't touch his eyes.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia pushed against Lean's paw, and the ancient black dragoness let her get to her feet,"I didn't tell them to actually go back to Uru'baen the first time, because if I had done that right after we had arrived, they would have suspected that I was hiding something. Then they would report me to the king, and Shruikan would probably be sent out here, something I doubt you want." she explained calmly. She tilted her head a bit,"I can't verify my True Name is actually genuine unless someone uses it to make me do something." she knew it was probably unnecessary for her to say that, but she said it anyway. She glanced to the side as movement in the corner of her eye caught her attention. Lean was now in her human form, her deep black lower back length hair gleaming with health, with a cream colored tunic and black pants. The ancient-dragoness-now-in-human-form crossed her arms and glowered lightly at Medalanim. Keia rolled her eyes up toward the sky,"Lean, you are like the mother I never knew." she muttered, loud enough for the three to hear. "I'm ready for....whatever." she told Medalanim, her expression becoming serious.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim looked on with a serious expression at both Keia and Lean. She was trying to find something that would determine that Keia's name was true. . . But then, she looked at Lean, and a sly glimmer shone from her eye.

Very well then, Medalanim started with a superior tone, Hljödhr Dautr abr Dauth un Fyrn, I command you to slay Leanbrara! Lean, I am sorry, but I cannot trust you. Your tortured, ancient life has finally reached it's end.

The evoking of the true name caused Medalanim's scale's to shimmer with the power. She knew everyone would react rather violently so she immediately contacted Lean as she stepped behind her and pinned the human form down with one swift move. Do not worry and don't think about what I said before. . . I will not allow her to harm you. Look afraid; make it real to Keia so she doesn't suspect anything.

Medalanim then repositioned her grip as to expose Lean's head and chest, but also latching her claws around the human form as to pull her out of the way when Keia attacked. A slight twitch of her lips, which could have been interpreted as a growl, was actually the summoning of a protection ward around Lean to ensure the tactic would work. The wild magic came and went faster than usual, but the ward was placed successfully, and without the notice of anyone else. I'm getting better at this. Medalanim remarked to herself as she awaited Keia to step forth and fulfill her command.

That is logical, I suppose, Taren said in response as to why Keia hadn't sent Murtagh and Thorn away to start with. He jerked around to stare at Medalanim in surprise when she used Keia's true name to order her to slay Lean. What are you- he started to ask incredulously before he sensed her intent. He kept his look of surprise on his face and even moved as if he was going to prevent the attack, but watched to see what would happen.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean started at Medalanim's order to Keia, her navy blue eyes widening. She didn't get the chance to get away or Morph before the younger dragoness had pinned her. A growl was building in her chest, but then she heard Medalanim's voice in her mind, explaining her intent. The ancient dragoness flicked the blue's thoughts in acknowledgment. When your test is finished please let me go to her. she replied in a whisper. Carefully she constructed a mask of fear over her face, even straining against Medalanim's paw as if she were trying to get away.

- - - - - - - - - -

Keia's eyes widened with horror as her ears registered what she thought she had misinterpreted. She felt an invisible force pull her forward to Lean, like a rope that was tied around her heart that made it tighten and constrict painfully when she resisted. She fought it anyway, even though it hurt, dragging her heels in the ground. Her hand trembled as it grasped the hilt of her sword and drew it slowly, but she still fought, leaning away from the pull as hard as she could. The evocation of her True Name gave her no choice except to obey, however, and gradually she was forced forward until she stood right next to her friend. Lean's eyes were filled with fear, but also a strange acceptance, as if the ancient dragoness had expected this to happen at one time or another. Keia's shoulders shook with a silent sob, her hands shaking as they both gripped the hilt of the sword and raised it above Lean's chest, the point aimed at her heart. She squeezed her eyes shut and sobbed again, not bothering to hide it,"Medalanim..." she said in a shaky, tear filled voice, but she didn't open her eyes or look up. The blade tip plunged downward without her voluntary consent.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim watched with a grim expression as Keia seemed to loose control of herself and reluctantly inch her way towards Lean. The effect of the name was never more obvious as she drew her sword and pointed it at Lean's chest, which even though the situation was tense, it relaxed Medalanim because she knew what was going to happen now. Medalanim also knew that Taren assumed what she was about to do, so she didn't mind him.

As Keia sobbed Medalanim's name and plunged her sword, Medalanim only watched blankly as the blade hissed through the air for a moment, then stopped only an inch from Lean's chest; blocked by the protection ward around her. Medalanim's eyes glimmered and she gave Keia a small push, knocking her over, and moved Lean out of the way.

Medalanim raised her head with a small, almost dark smirk as she felt a deep satisfaction in the results. You have been true to your word, Hljödhr Dautr abr Dauth un Fyrn, and you have passed this test. Medalanim declared to Keia with an air similar to her mentors, I relieve you of your previous command. Stand down, and sheathe your blade; you do not have to kill your friend today.

Medalanim took her claws off of Lean and helped both her and Keia to their feet with her paw, her eyes sparkling with fragile compassion. And I'm very sorry I scared all of you. . . Especially you Keia. Yet this was the same method many of my superiors used in the golden age to truly test a True Name's authenticity, by making the owner do something they would never do. And since you passed, now I know you can be trusted.

Despite knowing that Medalanim had the situation completely under control, Taren breathed a sigh of relief once she had released Keia from her command. What would you have done if that had not worked? he asked, cocking his head at her. He arced his neck over Keia and rubbed his cheekbone gently against her human arm, humming deep in his chest to try and comfort her.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia abruptly felt resistance and thought that she had done it. She had killed Lean. The one dragon in the entire world that had showed her compassion and tenderness. But then she felt herself being pushed back, and she fell to the ground with an ungraceful "oof!", wincing automatically. She heard Medalanim speak to her again, and she opened her eyes a bit. She sheathed her sword as commanded, failing to notice that there was no blood on the blade. Her head jerked up, then, when she registered the rest of Medalanim's words. She let the blue dragoness help her up, then she stood stock still, staring at Lean. There was no injury to speak of on the black haired woman. Her eyes blurred with more tears. A test. No more. It had only been to test her True Name. Her body started to shake a bit. She started at Taren's comforting rub on her arm and closed her eyes, shuddering.

- - - - - - - - - -

Lean felt her heart almost stop as the blade plunged toward her chest. She swore it skipped a beat when the tip hit something a mere inch away from her skin. She shivered as the pale gold metal of the blade gleamed like yellow ice. Once she was on her feet, the ancient black dragoness looked at her nest-mate. Keia was shaking and still crying, though softly now. Her blade was sheathed once more in its scabbard. Lean glanced gratefully at Taren for a moment before she too approached the sienna haired woman. She wrapped an arm around Keia's shoulders and squeezed gently, making tender sounds in her throat that she hoped would soothe the girl. Lean glowered lightly at Medalanim. There are less drastic ways to check it as well, Medalanim. One of them is simply saying the True Name to yourself, but not aloud, so the owner can not hear you. If they react in anyway, then they spoke true. she griped, but she didn't complain too much. With the strength of Medalanim's magic, she had doubted very much that anything bad could have happened. She felt a shudder ripple down Keia's body and crooned softly, rubbing the girl's arm. Lean glanced from Taren to Medalanim as the bronze asked what would have been done if the test had 'failed'. She arched an eyebrow. Probably tried to heal me. When that failed because of the fatal nature of the wound, Keia would have gone into a blind rage and attacked, True Name or no. she said bluntly. She knew Keia's personality and knew that that was how it would have happened, if Medalanim's protection shield had failed to deflect the blow for whatever reason. But that is not what happened. Medalanim's magic is too strong to simply fail for no reason. she stroked Keia's hair soothingly; the girl was calming down now, the tears and silent sobs reducing to soft hiccups. The ancient black dragoness looked directly at Medalanim, her navy blue eyes as hard as granite. But if you do that to her again, you will experience the anger of a mother dragon when her young is hurt. she warned, again being blunt. Having no children of her own, she had adopted the many dragons of the Empire as her offspring, though they were not related to her at all by blood. Keia was the one she cared for the most.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim gazed at Keia mournfully as the human stood shaking. She knew personally how traumatizing that this method of testing was. What would it be like if Medalanim was standing in Keia's place, and Solir was in Lean's? She would have been torn to pieces inside for being forced to kill him, and she assumed that the mutual and maternal friendship between them was as powerful as any Rider bond. She had seen such things happen so many times during the Rider war that it made her sick inside just thinking about it.

When Lean retorted about more subtle ways of checking the name, Medalanim turned to her slowly. I did not do so because I knew that her reactions would be subtle if not nonexistant. I saw it myself when she said her true name to me, which also stimulates a physical response. Her reaction was so subtle it could have well been hidden. I have even seen it done before. This method was always looked down upon in the past, and I truly regret using it on Keia, but it was the surest way.

She then glanced at Taren while Lean comforted Keia. I would have stopped Keia if I felt that my magic could possibly fail for any reason. She turned back to Lean, answering back to Lean's granite hard eyes with a soft icy gaze. And you are right that my magic is strong. The wild magic that flows through my veins was surrounding you during this trial. It's power can be incredible to behold, and impossible to resist. I was actually surprised that I didn't have to release the remainder of the spell violently on something from afar. You were safe, that was for sure.

She chuckled, and glanced at the few craters left of her previous spells, and the glass statue before she paused, then leaned forwards and nudged Keia gently on the cheek with her snout, wiping away the tears while feeling a sorrowful pain in her chest. I also promise you that I will never force you to do something as horrifying as this again. I already know what it is like to loose someone you love, someone you care for and protect, and I will rather die before I see it forced on someone else. But now, know that you are surrounded by those who care for you; who trust you and who will protect you from those who will harm you. I never meant to harm you.

As Medalanim said this, she could not help stopping a tear come into her eye. Her words were what many of her friends said to comfort her when Medalanim lay scared, injured, or depressed during her young life. She almost saw herself in Keia's place, being soothed by a young Solir. Hopefully, it would bring the same results as before.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren supposed it was the shock of the situation and the sudden dip in adrenaline afterwards, but both of the dragoness's misunderstood his question. He had been wondering what would have happened to Keia if she had lied about her true name. He snorted and continued to comfort Keia, deciding not to mention it. He cupped his forepaw around them both, Lean and Keia, and scooped them to his chest, holding them against the warm scales. In their place, he probably would have been very near shock, so keeping them warm was priority one.

Medalanim, while this remarkable hold on your magic lasts, perhaps you should use it to fix them something to eat, and a fire, he said privately to the blue. He turned to look at her so she would know he wasn't snubbing her because of the way she had tested Keia.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia closed her eyes and laid her head partially on Lean's shoulder. She started when she felt Medalanim's warm breath on her face, and looked up into an ice-blue-ringed-with-midnight-blue iris. Keia's eyes softened, and her lips lifted into a faint half-smile. She lifted a hand and touched Medalanim's snout lightly, tentatively, unsure if the blue would welcome the contact or recoil from it,"Thank you. And yes. Solir...." she said softly, then looked away and dropped her hand. She did not deserve to say his name. She looked at Taren as the bronze scooped her and Lean toward his warm scaled chest, wondering why he was doing so. She shivered at his warm hide, realizing how cold she felt for the first time. She sent a thought of gratitude to him, then looked back at Medalanim,"I understand, and believe you. Don't promise me that, though. I know better. This is war, and you might need to give another order like that at some point or another. Say Galbatorix relearns Lean's True Name. It is inevitable, as she stubbornly refuses to leave." she glowered at the black haired woman, who scowled right back,"If that happens and he sends Lean after you, because she is the most powerful dragon in the Empire, currently, then we'll have a problem. Lean's magic is different from yours. Older. I've seen it once or twice. Your magic is strong yes, but I'm not so sure if it could stand up to the Ancient Magic." she said uncertainly,"What would you do if that did happen?" she asked, unable to help herself. Lean squeezed her shoulders.
"I would kill myself if it came to that. My Eldunari is safe and far away from the Empire, so there would be no problem. And I can't access my magic at will, like Medalanim seems to. I have to have incentive." she said.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim closed her eyes at the small touch on her snout, welcoming the contact. She moved away a bit when Taren pressed both the humans to his chest, helping them recover from the shock.

In answer to Keia's comment Medalanim's gaze focused sharply on her. I mainly meant that I shall never forcibly command you to attack a friend in the same manner that I did before. If you attack Lean for another reason, then it depends on the situation if whether I intervene or not. If Galbatorix does learn Lean's true name. . . She glanced at the ancient female, Then many things will have to have failed before I resort to something like that. You do seem to have a plan, Lean, although I do not like that you would so readily discard your body for a long, dark life trapped within your heart of hearts. You may be older than me, and even be the most powerful in the Empire, but you are called the most powerful probably because those who were more terrifying are dead. I could easily take you in a battle. I can name quite a few Forsworn Dragons that could easily rip both of us to shreds, even if they are nameless.

Medalanim then sighed about the discussion of Lean's magic. Then you must have the same type of magic I possess. The original magic; the ancient magic that flows through all dragons' blood, and the one that surges in the very world itself is the one that you speak of, and the one that I can. . . barely control. She looked up into the sky, watching the orange and purple colors of the sunset stain the thick clouds around the volcanic fortress. Like all other normal dragons, you require inspiration to use your magic, but when I learned how to speak in the human tongue, and audibly in the ancient language, I found that I could summon it at will. However, I'm still new at using it. . . This type of magic is raw, wild, powerful, and unpredictable. It could be incredibly helpful if used properly, like what I did to protect you from both Galbatorix and Keia's sword. However, if I slip once, anything could happen. Medalanim gestured towards a black crater in the distance created from staving off the mental assault, and then towards the glowing indigo statue inside her cave.

Medalanim then shrugged. But if anything, I should have the power to stave Lean off for us all to escape, or maybe even just capture her. Medalanim then began making a fire after Taren asked her to, by ripping off a large piece of old, dry wood out of her original home, and after shredding it and arranging it into a large pile, she lit it with her fire breath, lighting the area. And Keia, I also want you to know that I was also secretly helping you. These types of experiences change people, and although I doubt it released you of Galbatorix's control, it at least put you on the right track to change your true name. Where you choose to go from here is up to you. Medalanim huffed and lifted of into the air with a large flap of her wings, going to get some meat for both Lean and Keia, along with some herbs to calm them.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren silently listened to the dragoness' conversation, monitoring Keia and Lean's conditions from the very edges of their mind, keeping as much distance between their minds as possible while he kept an eye on their health. Keia seemed to finally register a chill, and he shifted to where they were against his side, covered by his wing when Medalanim flew away for some meat.

He crept closer to the fire, angling a wing so that it reflected the heat back at the dragoness's to where they were in a cocoon of warmth. Lean, I wonder if it would be possible for you to set wards around yourself, using your true name, that would prevent you from harming anyone in the event that Galbatorix learns your true name. After all, just as it gives others power over you, it also gives you power over yourself, he pondered aloud to the black after a while.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia looked up at Medalanim and bit her lip, nodding silently,"I will do my best." she said quietly. She closed her eyes and shivered again, feeling the chill set into her bones. Lean rubbed her arm in an attempt to warm her.

- - - - - - - - - -

Lean sighed at Medalanim softly,"I would not be greatly missed, were I to die." she said, and shrugged. She listened silently to the blue and held Keia close, her lips twitching slightly. She grinned once the dragoness had left, and turned to Taren,"It's quite possible, actually. I would have to give my Name to someone that can handle magic. I would consider Medalanim, but she already has the burden of one and I would not give her another. I suppose I could set them on myself..." here she trailed off and smirked. Neither Taren nor Medalanim knew of her ability. She grinned widely at the bronze male, her navy blue eyes glittering,"I would like to show you something. An ability of mine, if you will. When Medalanim returns, think of a dragon that you knew, that you can picture in your mind as clearly as you can see me in front of you, and give me that picture. You'll see why once Medalanim gets back." she raised an eyebrow,"Or I can simply surprise you." she said, and chuckled.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim dived over the crater rim, dropping in altitude suddenly as she encountered the sudden loss of warmth from the winter air. She forgot how warm it was inside the volcano compared to the outside shore.

She dived to the side, trying to find a good source of food. She soon found a herd of small deer just near the shore. She dived down and picked up the nearest deer to her claws in a single swoop like a predator bird, causing the herd to panic and flee in her presence.

She ignored them, as she only needed one, and in midair she silenced the screams of her prey with a twist of her claws. She then landed on a cliff, searching for the other things that she needed. She first made a pot by taking a small boulder and burning a hollow core into it by focusing her fire. Molten Rock boiled violently and spilled over the sides as the stone grew white hot. She placed the stone into snow then to cool it to where it could be used to cook. Into the makeshift cauldron, she searched and gathered a few weeds and herbs from the cracks in the rocky landscape. She then placed the weeds with a bit of snow to cook them.

She didn't have much time before they would be done, so she immediately grasped the edges of the rock with her forepaws, and the deer in her mouth, and then lifted off. She made it swiftly over the rim and back to her home, where Taren was keeping watch over Keia and Lean. Medalanim began to work feverishly just from memory, moving around her former home, she found the tap that lead to a mineral filled spring. She placed the boulder under it and trying to be as gentle as possible with the tip of her claw, opened it. The water immediately boiled from the heat of the stone, but soon the cool water calmed it down to the point where it was hot enough to steam, but not hot enough to burn. And then finally, she uttered one small word in her audible tongue: "Rena." (Purify)

The water hissed and boiled with the onrush of energy that came and went in Medalanim's body, but then once it stopped, it was ready. Perfect. Medalanim said proudly as she shut off the valve. She then picked up the filled boulder with one paw and placed it in front of the fire.

She then went to the doorway into Solir's house, and reaching in, with an eye in the window, she could barely reach two large crystal chalices from the broken dining area. With the calm, precise movements her time carving gave her, she hooked both of the cups with her claws, and very patiently pulled them out.

She gently carried them over to the fire and handed them to Keia and Lean. There. Drink. Medalanim told both of them as she placed the deer by the fire, It's an old remedy that Solir and I used to make for those who were sick, who were injured, or who were distressed in any other way. It will be a bit bitter, but it will give you energy, calm your mind, and warm your heart.

Medalanim then placed herself next to Taren, slightly fatigued by the speed of her work. Since there was far more than enough of the brew for Keia and Lean to drink, she waited for them to get a glass before she sipped up some of it herself. The spicy, bittersweet flavor of the tea made her shiver, but the remedy's effects soon kicked in, and it relaxed most of Medalanim's stiff muscles, warming her entire body, and causing her mind to relax and focus. She welcomed Taren and the others to try it before she laid herself down and listened to whatever Keia or Lean had to say.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren looked at Lean curiously and sent her an image of something that had been in his mind all day: his sister. That is my sister, as clearly as I can remember her. It helps that I found a fairth of her earlier, he said, intrigued by Lean's cryptic talk of a special ability of her's. She was a bonded dragon, as was my brother. She lived in that portion of the city, he continued, pointing out the area of ruined stone with a foretalon.

He looked up when he heard Medalanim approaching quickly, tilting his wing to shelter Keia and Lean from the cold, winter wind drifting down from her wingbeats. The bronze watched her dart around feverishly, preparing a meal for their two friends and reaching carefully into her old home for some medicine she had brewed with Solir. Don't mind if I do, he said with a twinkle in his eye. He carefully took a small sip of the medicine. His eyes went wide and a massive twitch went all the way up his tail as the medicine slid down his throat. Oh my, what is that? he asked, coughing slightly.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean nodded her head and memorized the picture of Taren's sister, every scale, every dent, every shade of color on her body she committed to memory. She watched Medalanim when the blue returned, tilting her head as the dragoness ran about, preparing some sort of herbal tea. She smiled in thanks to her and took a sip, a shudder going down her spine. She made a face, but she felt warmth blossoming in the pit of her stomach. Beside her Keia stopped shaking and seemed to warm up. The ancient dragoness grinned at the sienna, then moved away. She winked at Taren. She walked behind a piece of wreckage that would hide her true form. She touched her Changing Seal and shook her scaled body, then brought up the picture of Taren's sister. She closed her eyes and embraced her Morph, letting the form slide over her. After a few moments, she looked pretty much exactly like Taren's sister. She shook herself again, then stepped out from her shelter. She tilted her head and smiled at the two dragons, her eyes glittering. This is my power, Taren, Medalanim. If I have the picture of a dragon, I can morph into them and imitate their bodies. she said. She flared her wings and beat them once before refolding them. Did she have a special power that was specific to her, Taren? she asked the bronze, tilting her head once more.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim let out a soft chuckle at Taren's reaction to the herbal remedy. It's a mix of rather common weeds and herbs that grow across Alagaësia, cooked in a stone that had been carved by a dragon's fire, and mixed with water filled with the enriched minerals from a mountain spring. We had learned how to make these herbal remedies from a healer in one of the Nomadic Tribes when we were only beginning to serve the Order. The key is timing and measuring it just right, else the remedy isn't effective. Maybe I could teach you sometime Taren.

Medalanim's mouth broke a small grin as she winked. But then her grin instantly vanished as Lean showed her power to shapeshift into other dragons. Medalanim only saw it as a power that could be used for trickery and deception, which she probably had done before under Galbatorix's commands. She turned slightly away with a dark look, too relaxed by her own remedy to be angry. There are many dragons that I would like to see again, but right now I only see the potential of that power to be used for evil. As interesting of a power as it is Lean. . . I feel insecure about it. It is fortunate that you are on our side or else I would be very on edge. Medalanim admitted to everyone before laying down her large head near the fire, finally feeling tired from the past day. She turned a wary eye towards Keia, ignoring what Lean was doing. Make sure to drink as much as you can. The more you drink, the longer the effect will last, and the better you will feel. That cup alone should take away most of your grief and shock.

As Medalanim thought for a moment, she studied Keia, then widened her eyes as she felt a pit in her stomach form upon a grim realization. I wonder when you expect to return to Galbatorix, and what you will do once over there? Sooner or later, you must go back, else he will command you with your true name or send Murtagh and Thorn back to fetch you. And I also wonder how the Tyrant will react to the memories he will more or less take from your mind.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren's heart seized and the breath rushed out of him like someone had hit him square on the lungs. He stared at Lean in disbelief, but it wasn't Lean. It was Kurenai. But it couldn't be, she was dead. Had been dead for years. Yet there she stood, pale gold and shining like the sun on water. The daintiest and prettiest dragoness he had ever known. He stared at her in shock, a wound in his soul that he had thought healed ripping open again at the sight before him. He drew in a shaky breath and looked away, his heart painfully beating inside his chest once more.

That is... That is an impressive ability... You got her perfectly, right down to the last detail, he said gruffly, the pain in his chest mutating to a sharp ache throughout his body. The bronze was barely aware of what Medalanim was saying.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean ignored Medalanim for the moment. She would show her the reason why she was doing this in a bit. No, she is not perfect. Look at her eyes, the shade of color is off a little bit, is it not? It is very difficult for me to do this. I only actually started using it once I was in the Empire. the black dragoness closed her eyes and released her Morph, black scales sliding over pale gold and her body growing larger. Finally she opened her eyes and shook herself. This is why I am dangerous and so powerful. And.... she closed her eyes and let another image ease into her mind. Her form began to shrink again, blue scales sliding over the black. She opened her ice-blue-ringed-with-midnight-blue. She was now an almost exact imitation of Medalanim. If the dragon I morph to has a special ability, then I too can use it, although it is a bit weaker than the power of the original dragon. she said. She let the form slide from her body, gradually taking on her own true shape. She snorted quietly and laid down with a yawn, gazing into the flames.

- - - - - - - - - -

Keia sighed and crossed her arms over her torso, raising the cup and taking another sip. At Medalanim's question she sighed again,"I'll return in a few days. Three at the most. And he can't, at least not at the moment. My True Name changed and he doesn't know it any more. That will likely change, but since you know my new True Name, hopefully it won't be too soon." at the mention of Galbatorix taking memories from her, she reached into her pocket and took out the tear shaped amulet again. It dangled from side to side on the leather cord,"This won't let him. It's a mind protecting charm that Natagath made and gave to me. It protects my mind from unwanted mental contact." she explained.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim sighed when Lean changed back to her normal form and then, she hissed angrily when Lean shifted into a copy of Medalanim's own form. It was a shock, seeing herself in an almost out of body experience. Yet she immediately detected features that were not her own, such as the slightly off blue color compared to her deep bluish indigo scales, the lack of the twin brightsteel blades on her tail, and the soul in her eyes not being her own, which is what unnerved Medalanim the most.

Medalanim didn't lower her snarl as she spoke, Like I said before, the first thing that I saw in this power was it's potential to be used for deception. But if you ever intend to trick me Lean, I warn you that I do not forget the faces of those whom I trust, just as I recognized your own features in your version of me. And if what you say is true, I ask that you do not change into my image again, and much less attempt to use my power. Not just for my own safety, but for yours. The ancient, true form of magic was never meant to be controlled, and when I first summoned it, I was on the edge of death and I had to release all the raw energy at once to save myself, despite me severely injuring my own Rider, destroying our first home, and nearly leveling a mountain as the result.
You might not have the ability to control it as well, and you might be overwhelmed as the result, causing not only your demise, but possibly the deaths of everyone around you. But of course, I do not think that you will be using this power anytime soon. . .

She gave a dark glare as she continued in her growling voice, "You cannot speak in an audible tongue while in the body of a dragon, unlike me, which is required to access my power. That was learned by diligent practice, and so I do not think that you will be able to access my ability if you change into my form."

Medalanim then took a deep breath, and had another sip of the tea to keep herself calm. She laid down, with a dark, studying expression as she watched Lean.

Taren's breath rushed out in a small sigh of relief, and a little sadness, as Lean shifted from Kurenai's form to her own. Now that he wasn't looking at a ghost from his past, he could get over the shock enough to see the differences she spoke of. Kurenai had had a birthmark on her left forepaw. It was the only white scale on her body. When they were little, their father had used to call her "his Little Snowdrop".

The bronze shook himself vigorously, bringing his mind out of the past. He watched Lean shift into Medalanim, this time keeping a sharp eye out for the telltale signs. Unless he was mistaken, she was just a little bit too big to pass as the real Medalanim. At least to people that knew her really well.

Keia, if you have a charm that protects your mind from his, how is he not suspicious already? Why has he not taken it away from you? he asked curiously.

Lean's upper lip pulled back in a silent snarl, baring her fangs, though it seemed more like she had smelled something bad than a threatening gesture. She sighed, lowering her upper lip once more, and closed her eyes. I do the best with what I have been given, Medalanim. she rasped, her voice abruptly sounding tired and very much like her age. You can not condemn me for that much. she huffed gently, so her breath wouldn't blow out the fire. I use my ability only if it will help someone I care for, or if I can not avoid it because of orders. with that she curled into a ball and prepared to rest for the night.

- - - - - - - - - -

Keia pursed her lips as she thought about it,"Well, he doesn't know about it, yet." she said, tying the tear shaped amulet around her neck as she spoke,"At least, I don't think he does." she frowned a bit, unsure now.

Medalanim only narrowed her eyes at Lean in response, taking note of the tension and wear in Lean's voice. She was telling the truth, but for some strange reason, something inside was preventing Medalanim from apologizing for her rude statement. She still felt feelings of deception surround Lean's ability, even though it was clear that Lean has no intention to use it as such.

Am I not able to trust someone so easily as I once did? Medalanim solemnly asked herself before she turned away, mimicking Lean and preparing to sleep for the night.

Maybe he doesn't. Has he attempted to read your thoughts since you received the amulet? I would assume that the only way he'd learn about it is when he failed to enter your mind, Taren speculated, watching Keia.

The bronze sensed the tension between Medalanim and Lean, and looked over at the two to see what was happening, but they were both bedding down for the night. He watched them for a few seconds, then turned back to Keia.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia was watching Lean as well. She crooned at the ancient black dragoness, then looked at Taren. Her expression darkened,"I don't give him a reason to search my mind. I obey every order that he gives me, and I give him every detail of my missions. Or, all of the details that he wants to hear." she said darkly. She crosses her arms over her chest,"Of course. He wouldn't even suspect the dragon that he raised from a hatchling and obeyed him better than his own bonded dragon did." she growled, then turned and looked to Lean again, her expression worried. Keia stepped away from Taren and changed to her draconic form, then padded over to Lean. She curled up next to the black dragoness and closed her eyes. After a few seconds, she felt something warm cover her. She peeked open an eye and saw the translucent black flight membrane of Lean's wing covering her body. She smiled, then closed her eyes to rest.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim ignored the conversation that she heard between Taren and Keia, and closed her eyes, quickly falling into a deep sleep, and before she knew it, she wandered into the twisted realm of her dreams. . .

Medalanim found herself in a large field. It was flat, barren, and scorched. She looked around and called if anyone is around, and a shadow appeared in the distance. She flew the span to the person, but as she flew, the man seemed to escape her at the same speed.

Frustrated, she tried to fly faster, and harder, yet the man still was able to keep pace. Running out of energy, she slowed to a stop and landed, the man stopping only a short distance away. "Who are you?" She called out to the man, unable to see his face. He turned, and tears appeared in her eyes when she beheld Solir standing in front of her, holding his usual great smile as always. "Don't you remember me Medalanim?" He said with a laugh, "It's me!" He welcomed her with open arms, and she immediately answered by leaping towards him, joy bursting from her heart at their reuniting.

But, right as she was about to embrace him again, he disappeared in a cloud of smoke. The sky darkened, and she looked towards her side. There stood Galbatorix, with an evil snicker, holding a now unconscious Solir by the rim of his shirt in one hand, and grasping a bright sword with the other. "Looking for this?" Galbatorix asked with a sick snigger, both waving Solir like a piece of bait, and also moving the sword menacingly towards her Rider.

Medalanim at first was frightened, then furious. "How dare you touch my Rider!" She roared as she leaped towards the king. Yet she did not go far, as she felt another dragon bite onto her tail to stop her. Turning about to see, she was horrified to see Keia holding onto her. And then, before she could even ask the Sienna dragon why she was doing this, she was pushed over and held in place by another dragon. A large clawed paw pinned her head to the ground, and she looked up to find Lean, holding a dark smirk.

Tears now beginning to well up in her eyes at Solir's capture, and at the betrayal of her new companions, she pleaded to Lean to set her free, yet the black dragon did not listen. Hearing a laugh, she turned her eye back to Galbatorix, who immediately drove the sword into Solir's back. Bright blood dripped from the elf's mouth as she felt his consciousness slip into oblivion. "No. . . NO! NOOO!!!" She cried in desperation as her Rider was suddenly torn from her again.

Now sobbing, and shouting words of hate and revenge, Medalanim struggled futilely under Lean and Keia's iron grip. But then she stopped when she heard the final slithering words from Galbatorix's tongue: "Lean, finish her off."

The black dragon growled in pleasure as her form shifted slightly, turning into her copy of Medalanim. Medalanim only watched in horror as the dragon spoke in the ancient language, creating a firestorm above the entire scene. The firestorm twisted and curved into a gigantic spear of fire, which decended from the heavens rapidly towards her head. As her doom approached her, and the world around her was enveloped in a bright, intense inferno she cried to herself shamefully, "I failed."

Medalanim woke with a loud start; jumping immediately to her feet and into a battle position. Her eyes were wide open, and darting back and forth in the morning light, and her muscles shook from the adrenaline rushing through her body. Within a minute, she realized that the ordeal was a dream, and she tried to take a deep breath in attempt to calm herself, even though the haunting images of the dream still played in her head, and her heart still beat vigorously in her chest. She noticed also that the others were still sleeping and that it was early dawn. She quickly made a decision, then she walked to the edge as stably as her shaky muscles would allow, and flew off to head to the ocean to take a quick dip in the cold water to regain her senses, her mind lost on the meaning of her strange and horrifying dream. . .

Post Re: Mourning
Taren nodded goodnight to Keia when she walked away and nestled beside Lean. The bronze male looked around, then padded over to a stretch of bare dirt, which he then heated with the fire from his belly. He circled it a few times, then flopped down on it, sighing happily. The likelihood of an enemy coming at them now was relatively low, so he gratefully slid into sleep.

His dreams were uncomplicated fancies, but just before he awoke, he dreamed of his sister. She appeared as she had in the fairth, bright gold, with a slightly distended belly. He approached her happily and asked if she had something to tell him. She just smiled and took to the air. Taren grinned and followed her, the two of them playing tag as they had when they were younger. Eventually he noticed she was leading him somewhere inside the city. He sent her a questioning thought, but she just looked back at him and smiled. The bronze frowned and followed, taking in the scenery. In his dream, Doru Araeba was whole again, but there were no people or dragons. Wait, there was a dragon and it looked like... But how could it be? She was in the sky with him... Yet the dragon he had glimpsed below could almost be her twin, or...

Just as he thought the impossible, Kurenai signaled they had reached their destination. He darted down beside her, landing heavily on the ramp that led up to the rim of the extinct volcano. They were about halfway up, and from that height, he could see everything in the city. Kurenai tapped his shoulder and he turned to see what she was pointing at. There was a crack in the wall of the city, and in the crack something was gleaming. He leaned in for a closer look and...

Jumped awake as he heard something moving close by. He blinked rapidly, trying to bring his eyes into focus, looking around for the source of the noise. A flash of blue out of the corner of his eye made him jerk his head around, but it was just Medalanim flying towards the ocean. He snorted and tried to settle back into sleep as it was just barely dawn, but his dream had him to unsettled. It had felt so real, as if Kurenai had somehow reached out to him to show him those images.

I will go look for that crack in the wall, later, he promised himself, although he didn't see the point. It was just a dream, there wouldn't be anything there.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean had a dream about her mother and father that night. She hadn't see her father since he disappeared in his search for Zefanrac, his older brother. That was centuries upon centuries ago. She barely remembered what he looked like, but in the dream he was so vivid, as if he truly stood beside her. They were a family again. They laughed, they played, they play-fought, they hunted. And then her father disappeared in a puff of black smoke. The anguish that she had stuffed down inside her broke free, fresh and raw and aching. She keened in her dream, the pain of loss ripping through her once more. She took flight and flew for days, didn't stop for any reason other than to rest. She didn't eat, didn't drink, barely even slept. Finally she dropped to the ground, exhausted, and simply lay there, trying to stay conscious. As her vision darkened, she saw a dark shape hurtle across the night sky.
She jerked awake, lifting her head sharply and panting hard. Her navy blue slowly calmed, and she glanced to the light coming from the horizon. It was only a dream.... she said softly, looking at the ground between her paws. She closed her eyes. It couldn't mean anything. Her father had been gone for so long that he was without question no longer with the living. She opened her eyes and looked at Keia, who seemed to still be sleeping. Her expression softened as she watched the sienna dragoness breathe deeply. Then she noticed that Taren had his eyes open, and Medalanim was gone completely. Good morning, I suppose. I think. she said quietly so she didn't wake Keia.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim, still not quite thinking clearly, dived headfirst over the rim of the crater and over the craggy, icy, steep cliffs of Vroengard. Desperate for some cold water to clear her head, she flew rather rapidly towards the shore. She reached it within seconds, and a few seconds later, she was out enough to where it would be deep enough to dive in.

She folded her wings in and shut her eyes as she hovered above the ocean's choppy surface, and then dove in. The sensation felt like hundreds knives stabbing into every place of her body, which caused her wince from the pain. She swam a few strokes then leaped out, flapping to regain altitude in the cold air.

To counteract the dangerous cold, she released a large cloud of indigo fire in front of her, which enveloped her and turned the cold water around her to steam while reheating her body.

She repeated these steps three times, feeling the pain and relief again and again, until she felt invigorated enough in both mind and body to turn back. She climbed over the peak again, still steaming, and landed at the cliff, where Taren and Lean were awake, and apparently, both appeared irritated by something. Good morning, and sorry I was gone. I. . . Just needed to clear my head. She shook off any remaining water off of her and laid back down at the edge of the cliff. She glanced nervously at Lean and Keia, and even though she could think more clearly, her mind still conflicted with itself about whether if they could be trusted. It only made her more nervous that she was so open to them.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren glanced over at Lean as she jerked awake. She mumbled a greeting at him and he nodded back, a look of understanding on his face. Looks like we all must have had bad dreams last night, he said knowingly, gesturing at Medalanim, whom he could see returning. He stood up and shook vigorously, trying to shake off the chill last night's dream had left in behind. Between it and the frosty morning air, his scales were standing practically on end.

It's alright Medalanim, you're not the only one who is unsettled from their night's rest, he replied. The bronze looked to the horizon, estimating how much time remained before the sun rose completely and warmed the earth. He wrinkled his nose in distaste. It was barely past daybreak, so another five hours or so. He shook again and grumbled irritably.

He looked at Keia and chuckled. At least one of us appears to be having a quiet sleep, he said with a smile.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean snorted softly and glanced down at the sienna dragoness when Taren commented on her apparent lack of nightmares. Her navy blue eyes saddened. Oh, she has nightmares, alright. She just knows how to hide it, even when she's asleep. she looked up at the bronze and the blue. She told me, once, that she can see them in her dreams. The ones that she has killed or brought into Uru'baen for them to be killed. They surround her and beg her for mercy, but she can not give it to them, because they are already gone. She is haunted every day by what she has done. By what she did willingly, in the beginning. I think that is what hurts and disgusts her the most, is that she was a willing tool to the king for him to use as he pleased. she said quietly. She looked away. My dream was not so much a nightmare as a reminder of the truth. I saw my father, and my mother. We were happy, and together....For a while. she trailed off, her throat clenching. She closed her eyes and shook her head. My father has been dead for thousands of years, however. This I know, even if I have not see the body. she murmured tiredly, and snorted. She opened her eyes. I hope your dreams were somewhat better. she said dryly.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim let out a troubled sigh, Even still, I'm disturbed.

She listened to Lean tell of Keia's nightmares, and she felt pity for the dragoness. I would also be haunted by the innocents I've killed if I was in her place. . . Medalanim admitted to herself.

Medalanim looked back to Lean when she asked if the other's dreams were better. I doubt it. My dream. . . She paused, nervously glancing at Taren then to Lean, My dream was about Galbatorix killing my Rider; reminding me of how it felt for his consciousness to be ripped away as the madman laughed at my torment and rage. . . I thought I was rid of that nightmare after the first thirty years in hiding. . .

Medalanim shrugged and shivered in the morning cold and then suddenly noticed something. She could barely feel it, but she could sense a strange energy emanating from the cave. It felt familiar only to her just because she's handled the magic before. She wondered if the magic that created the statue had been triggering everyone's strange nightmares.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren glanced sadly at Keia. He wished there was something he could do to alleviate her nightmares, but even if she hadn't been wearing her charm, if he had entered her mind while she was sleeping, there was no doubt in his mind that it would have just awoken her. He looked toward Medalanim and hummed in a comforting way. From the way she had looked at him, and then Lean, he sensed that there was more to her dream than she was letting on. He looked at her knowingly and just for a second increased the tempo of his hum.

I'm afraid my sleep was nowhere near restful, he remarked, turning to look at Lean. I... I dreamed about my sister. At first we were just goofing around like when we were younger, but then I realized she was leading me somewhere. There was a crack in the wall of the city, about halfway up the ramp leading to the crater rim. Something was inside, but before I could see what, I woke up, he said. The bronze left out the part of seeing the other dragon out of the corner of his eye. He didn't know what it meaned or if it was even important. Assuming that the whole dream meant anything in the first place.

Medalanim, what is it? he asked, seeing the blue look back towards the cave.

Lean snorted softly at Medalanim, though not in a condescending way. Nightmares never go away completely, they only fade as time goes on until something in the waking world makes it come back to the forefront of the mind. Your dream, Taren, seems to be as if Kurenai is trying to show you something. I'd advise you to heed the dream and take a look at the place she showed you. she said quietly. She glanced down at Keia, who was beginning to stir. She hummed soothingly in her throat, and after a few moments, the sienna dragoness relaxed and fell still. She looked up at the blue dragoness and Taren, tilting her head questioningly and lifting an eyeridge.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim noticed that everyone was looking at her, but she didn't answer them. Instead she walked silently towards her cave, and up to the glowing glass flame that had been created only a day earlier. The blue-iris lights that danced within seemed to have slightly changed to a brighter hue, now with flashes of all different colors, and shifted around more violently.

She could definitely feel the radiating energy coming from it, and after a moment, she recognized it's power and stood in fear and awe, taking a step back and fluttering her wings. This statue. . . She said with a tone that was fearful, but at the same time holding a sense of reverence, It has become a natural source of wild magic.

She knew from experience with other natural occurances of wild magic that strange things have been known to happen in their presence, especially to those sensitive to them. But at the same time, these things could be dangerously unpredictable. She took another step back, trying to keep as calm as possible. Even a stir of emotion could cause it to do something. I don't know what it is capable of, but to be safe, we should leave. Soon. I believe it has been what stirred our nightmares, and what may have given Taren that strange dream. And although there might be truth to it, we cannot tell what else this may do. . . or may have already done to us. These sources can be dangerous not just because they are unpredictable, but they also have been known to act as if they have a consciousness of their own.

Right then, the statue's energy surged and a crackling spark of lightning shot across the surface of the glass, causing Medalanim to freeze in place. Medalanim's scales stood on end and she hissed at the indescribable pattern energy radiating from it.

Post Re: Mourning
You're right Lean, I should take a look at it, Taren said quietly, frowning in thought. That particular crack in the wall was where Kurenai and his brother used to leave him things when they were younger and just starting out as apprentice Rider dragons. They would collect interesting mementos of their lessons and leave them there for him to take home when he came with their parents to visit. The fact that she had chosen that place to show him must mean that before she died, she left him something.

He shook himself out of his thoughts and looked at his companions. Would you all mind going with me now to look? he asked. Before anyone could answer, what Medalanim had said about the statue she had created registered in his mind. He growled and was about to tell Lean to wake Keia so they could go, when the statue pulsed.

The energy it radiated connected with Medalanim, making the blue's scales stand on end. Medalanim! he yelled, running to her. He thought about throwing himself in between her and the beam of energy, but then it occured to him that her body was better equipped to handle such a large amount of wild magic. Therefore, he decided to instead knock her out of the way with his shoulder.

The bronze backed up a few steps, then charged forward, throwing his shoulder out at the last second. Immediately when it connected, a charge went through his body and he roared in pain and surprise as it sent him flying threw the air. He landed heavily and surged to his feet, shaking his head to clear it of the lights that had popped up in his vision when he hit the ground.

Stupid, he growled at himself. He reached for the magic, intending to do what should have occured to him immediately. He shaped the magic with his will, then pushed a shield in between Medalanim and the beam. It held for a few seconds, then collapsed in front of the increasing pressure. He growled again, this time in frustration. If he tried that again, there was no telling what the second surge in energy would do to Medalanim.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean's eyes narrowed, then widened with awe. It had been a long, long time since she'd seen a source like this. She closed her eyes and seemed to bask in its energy, but she eyed it warily when it pulsed abruptly. She snorted at Taren's attempts to protect Medalanim. A pure Wild Magic source like this, Taren, will not be hampered by spells of normal strength. she mused. She hadn't moved from her position. Wild Magic, even if unpredictable, rarely does anything out of pure chance. You say that they can seem to have a mind of their own, correct? Do you mean that it is like us, with thoughts of its own, feelings, dreams, or even allegiances? Or merely that it is intelligent, like the animals that we prey on? she asked curiously. She tilted her head slightly. Perhaps you can find out, Medalanim. Attempt to communicate with it and find out why it is doing what it's doing. Cautiously. she suggested lightly.

Post Re: Mourning
OOC: Prepare for a long post! (And ps, the only thing that everyone else sees is a giant fireball that's so intense that it's hard to look at)

IC: Medalanim glanced at Taren when he foolishly attempted to block the magic and shove her out of the way of the energy. For once she had to give him a dark glare, telling him with body language alone to not interfere.

When Lean spoke, Medalanim glanced at her. I do not know truly what type of mind the ancient Magic has, even after studying all that the elves know if it and after being exposed to a source twice in my lifetime. If it has a consciousness, then it thinks in ways that we cannot understand; it's motives are those that are beyond comprehension. I can try to communicate with it to gain some time. But the priority here is that all of you need leave at once! It may also attempt to go after you.

She paused when the magic reached her. She felt a strong connection form between her and the source, and a minute later, a golden fire came out of the statue and began to advance towards her.

Don't mind my safety. I'll be fine. It was the last thing that she was able to get past the magic before her entire body was enveloped in a blinding twister of crackling energy.

The air shimmered around her, and vibrated with a deep hum that was near deafening. The light was so much that she had to close her eyes tightly. But she had to concentrate. She relaxed her mind, and following her normal procedure in handling magic, she allowed it to penetrate every part of her mind and body. She shuddered with the power of the wild magic. . . It was far more powerful and slightly different than the power she normally uses. . . And she felt slightly afraid.

Nevertheless, she expanded her mind outwards towards the source, and she met an even hotter core of power that even her mind had trouble looking at. She still pushed closer and closer to the source, until finally she touched it. The connection was made, and a powerful surge rushed through her body and the statue, more than what she could take. She roared in pain as her body felt as if it was being torn to shreds from the inside, and then. . . everything went black.

She woke up, and tried to open her eyes, but her surroundings were completely black. There was also no noise. No smell or taste in the air. She tried to move, but for some reason she couldn't feel her body. After a minute it eventually came to her with utter horror that she had no body. Was she in her Eldunarì? She tried to expand her mind, but she couldn't do it for some reason.

After a small moment, the memories of what had happened came to her, and she immediately guessed what had happened. She was in the Void, which she had guessed before that it was somehow connected with wild magic. She was dead. But wait, no, she couldn't be dead. She couldn't feel Solir. No. . . She said to herself as a pit formed in her absent heart. Solir. . . No, I only wanted to see you again. Please. . . She began to painfully sob in her mind, now feeling absolute torture and hopelessness now that she was doomed to spend an eternity alone.

But then a voice appeared:
"Medalanim? Medalanim why are you crying?"

She recognized that voice immediately, stirring her from her sorrow. Could it really be? She tried to look around but she couldn't see anything. She still only saw blackness. She tried calling out with her mind, Solir?

She was met with a cheery answer.
Can't you recognize your own Rider's voice?

W- Where are you? She weakly asked, trying to look around frantically, even though she had no head to turn. Solir laughed."You just simply need to open your eyes."
Medalanim became confused. What do you mean? I have no- She was cut off when a bright light greeted her, and feeling restored as a great wave of warmth. She opened her eyes, and beheld a shimmering yellow grassy landscape, and then looked down as she felt her body again, though this time, it was transparent, like colored glass. Then slowly she felt a presence in her mind that she had not felt in a hundred years. But it was not like any dream. It was real, and it brought a wave of tears into her eyes. She looked up, from her feet, and saw Solir, dressed in golden robes, wearing a beatific smile on his face.

Without hesitation, Medalanim jumped forwards and ran into him, knocking him down and began to nuzzle him in his chest. I have waited so long for this. . . Medalanim tearfully said to her Rider.
"And I have too. . . And I am so sorry that I had left you. I am also so thankful that we are together again." Solir calmly answered, savoring the embrace, yet after a minute his voice darkened. "But, unfortunately, my friend, it is not to last."

What? Medalanim asked with an edge of anger and horror, pulling herself away from her Rider. She quickly began to think that it was another dream about to change into a nightmare. Solir propped himself back to his feet, his face wary and his voice steadfast.
"Unlike me, you are not dead, and thus you will eventually return to the physical world. I brought you here with the powers of the wild magic in you, and I need you to listen."

Medalanim could not believe what she was hearing. She had just reunited with her Rider and now she was going to be torn away from him again. . . She knew she could not mentally handle being torn from him again. She shook her head and roared while stamping her feet. NO! I am not loosing you again.

Solir walked up to her calmly, and when her face was low, he gently touched her snout to stop her and looked into her eyes with a twinkling stare.
"Patience, Medalanim. I missed you as much as you have missed me, but you must listen as time is short."

Medalanim stopped, staring deeply into his gentle eyes. Solir smiled slightly. "Even a hundred years has not changed you." Solir then lost his smile, "Medalanim, as much as I appreciate you for surviving this long against the odds, I want you to never return to me by choice, or put yourself in situations where you will loose your life for a cause."

Medalanim stirred with confusion, but Solir cut her off. "Great threats have risen in Alagaësia, and your abilities give those that want freedom the advantage they need to overcome it. Your mission was to protect the Rider order, but now it is gone. Now, it is your duty to oversee the rise of the new generation in my stead; To help in any way you can until the land is free of evil once more. Do you understand?"

Medalanim hesitated for a moment, then nodded. But I will never see you again.

"Do not worry." Solir grinned, "I will make it so that the hole in your mind created from my absence is filled. You will be whole as if you were born free, and although you will still emotionally miss me as a friend, you will not physically miss me as you have for the last century."

Medalanim felt confusion and yet strange relief from Solir's answer. She felt oddly satisfied and relaxed to listen to him more. "I also want you to tell your friends that their dreams last night, are more important than other dreams. They are not essentially visions of the future, but have something of importance that they need to focus on. Taren's especially, as Kunerai is trying to send him a message through his dreams."

What about my dream? Medalanim asked with concern, wondering about it's meaning. Solir's face gained a sad look as he began stroking her face again. "Unfortunately yours was spawned from your fear of trust. I know that you have been hurt by your experience, but I hope that you can be more open to your companions. The same goes for young Keia, who is haunted by her torturous master. I sense the light in their hearts, and they hold no contempt towards you. They concern for your safety even now, which is why I need to send you back soon."

Medalanim first felt confused, then afraid as she began to lift from the ground and out of Solir's embrace. She struggled to break free of the magic, but she couldn't move. Tears dripped from her face as her Rider grew ever more distant. Solir! No! Don't leave me, please! Will I ever see you again? Solir answered, tears also appearing in his face, "Even I do not know, but be comforted to know that I am always watching over you. . ."

The world warped from orange to grey, then black, the white form of Solir disappearing last, and finally, Medalanim felt herself land on her side in something soft, and she heard the sharp sound of breaking glass in the distance. She then heard Solir one last time in her mind before he left for good in an echoing voice. Farewell. . . Medalanim. . .

It took her a moment to realize where she was as her vision was blurry. The first she felt was the ground, which was hard and hot, and a few feet away from her, she could see the twisting shapes of fire. Her eyes focused more and she noticed that the ground was hotter than she thought. The rock glowed a bright orange, and the air shimmered from the intense heat, yet she felt no pain. She then looked towards the statue, and saw that it was broken. No light flickered inside it.

Letting out a great sigh, she struggled to her feet, her muscles shaking. She noticed that her scales were shimmering like before, but much more intensely. She tried to take a step, and she felt the rock give beneath her. Looking down, she saw that her body gave off so much heat from the energy stored in her body, it was melting the rock.

Also at the same time, she felt slightly different. Not different in personality, but the pain of missing Solir was gone. She felt more whole and independent as she was before she hatched. A feeling that she never thought she would feel again. This is. . . strange. . . She muttered, her mind overwhelmed by what had just happened.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren snorted and looked away, the skin on his nose, hidden by bronze scales, reddening with embarrassment. The looks the two females had given him seemed to say "Foolish male." He backed away anxiously, returning his attention to Medalanim. She was now concealed by a roaring tower of flame, so bright the bronze couldn't bear to look at it for more than a few seconds. She's right, Lean. I don't know how Keia is still sleeping through all of this, but we need to get her out of here, he said to the ancient black dragoness.

He carefully walked over to Keia, trying to avoid the attention of whatever was connected to Medalanim. Autarkeia, you need to awaken now, he said urgently into her mind. He crouched over her and hissed slightly, uncertain as too how much time they had left.

His head snapped around as he heard a cracking sound, the glass statue had broken. The flame pillar around Medalanim vanished, but it was still too hot to approach her. Her scales were sparkling more brilliantly than before, and her body was radiating so much heat that the stones under her paws were melting. He walked around Keia, there was apparently no need to keep trying to wake her now, and looked at her curiously. Medalanim? Are you alright? he asked.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean watched the blue dragoness carefully, curious, until the huge pillar of flame concealed the female from sight. She growled softly and curled protectively around Keia. The ancient dragoness glanced at Taren when he said they should get Keia out of there. She nodded in agreement, glancing down at the sienna dragoness within her protective circle. She looked up though when the fire receded, leaving Medalanim by herself once more. Lean slowly uncurled from around Keia and looked down at her. How the young female could sleep through something like that was amazing. Well, she has a hard head. Maybe that has something to do with it. she said dryly, looking over the blue dragoness as she spoke. Medalanim looked slightly shaken, but oddly...steady, at the same time. The ancient black dragoness crooned soothingly, then looked back down to Keia, who was just beginning to stir. The sienna raised her head and yawned, her eyes opening into slits. They opened wider when they registered the change in Medalanim. What did I miss? she asked. Lean snorted in disbelief. You have the deepest sleep and the hardest head I've ever seen, Keia. she said dryly, rolling her eyes up toward the sky.

Medalanim looked up, still dazed by her experience, when Taren asked if she was okay. She was surprised that they had not made it out, and even still, Keia had been sleeping through the entire ordeal.

I'm alright. I think But I. . . I just saw Solir. She weakly answered back with an astonished look. She stepped out of the pit her foot was forming in the ground and stepped on some more fresh rock, which hissed and gave way under the pressure, making it somewhat hard to stand.

Post Re: Mourning
You saw Solir? You mean in a dream or vision? Taren asked incredulously. He snorted in amusement and sent an agreeing thought to Keia and Lean at the old black's comment. He watched Medalanim struggle to walk through the puddles of rock her body heat was creating. Perhaps you should go take a dip in the ocean until your body cools off, he suggested. He looked her up and down, peering closely at her eyes. Ever since he had met her a couple of days ago, there had been a haunted look in them, almost like you could see the gaping hole Solir's death had left behind. Now though, while there was pain, it didn't appear to be as sharp.

What happened in there? he asked curiously, frowning.

Post Re: Mourning
No, not any vision or dream, he was here. . . Medalanim paused and looked towards the broken statue. Or I was there. In the Void. I had died; The magic had killed me, and. . . he brought me back. The void is connected to the natural sources. That was why it was trying to reach me, it was actually Solir reaching to me from the grave.

The memory of the event had faded greatly from once she had gained consciousness. She could only remember a few phrases, and Solir's warm embrace. She looked down towards the glowing ground, now truly feeling how whole she felt. Feeling free of the torment of her Rider's loss, it felt. . . Good. Relieving. Wonderful. She didn't have to miss him. She could finally let him go.

She felt enormous relief, and she let out a brief chuckle in how she forgot how good it felt to not live like a half being, and the more she thought about it, the better she felt. She looked back at Taren, her eyes sparkling. He broke the bond between me and him. . . He made me a whole, free dragon; healing the scar left by his death. He wanted me to live on to fight all those who would dare oppose those who deserve to live free lives, and I am to help you Lean, and Keia, She turned to the two, It is my mission now to protect you both from Galbatorix. I will be glad to help in any way I can.

Then she remembered what Solir had to say about Taren. And Taren, Solir asked me to tell you that Kunerai is watching over you. . . He said that your dream was actually a message from her. She's trying to tell you something. You said something about a crack in the city wall, correct? Let me take a dip to cool off and then I'll see what I can do to help. As she said this, she took off. Full of energy and determination, she roared as she swooped over the crater edge. She finally had something to fight for. She finally had a will to live.

Taren hummed happily for Medalanim, baring his sharp teeth in a smile. He almost choked when she told him what Solir had said about Kurenai, but in truth he wasn't that surprised. That dream had felt too real to be anything else. He nodded and watched her fly away, roaring her freedom to the air. What of you two? Would you like to come with us? It's obviously not that far away, or do y'all want to do your own thing for now? he asked, turning to look at the sienna and black dragoness's beside him.

Lean smiled at Medalanim, dipping her head with gratitude. Thank you, Medalanim. she murmured. She watched the blue fly over the crater with a loud roar, and chuckled. She turned to Taren at his question, hesitating. Well, I have no obligations to meet. Galbatorix probably won't expect Keia back for another day or two. I suppose we can stick around for a while and cause more trouble. she said with a wry laugh, her navy blue eyes twinkling with mischief.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim made a large swooping dive towards the ocean. It was actually somewhat difficult, as the air under her wings was heated into a constant updraft. She approached the cold ocean again, this time a bit more timid. The temperature shock might be too much to handle.

She hovered above the water, which began to steam from her presence. She lowered more slowly and then plopped into the water. It didn't feel like falling into water as much as it felt like falling into thin air, as it instantly vaporized before it reached her body, causing her to sink like a rock. She fell and fell, and she didn't feel her body decrease in temperature at all. She needed to breathe, and she flapped her wings frantically to reach the surface.

The water hissed as her head rose from the water, followed by her body. Strange. . . I'm so hot, water turns to vapor before it can cool me. Maybe it's because of the energy in my body. . .

With a snort, she looked to the sky and shouted "Brisingr!" followed by a large stream of fire to focus on. Using only the excess energy in her body to fuel the spell, she intensified and lengthened the indigo fireball until it became a thousand foot high blue-violet inferno seconds later. Using the sparkling of her scales as a meter, she waited until they had at least dimmed to half their brightness, which took a couple minutes, before she stopped the spell.

She then flew back to the ice covered shore to test her body temperature. She landed, and placed her foot into a drift of snow near the rocky cliff edge. It melted and steamed, but it didn't instantly vaporize. As well, the rock beneath her didn't melt. Satisfied with the results, she launched into the air again, and in a short while, was back down with Taren, Lean, and Keia. I've cooled off, but I'm still a bit hot. Water won't cool me down, strangely enough. I'll have to wait for my energy to return to normal.

Post Re: Mourning
Excellent, I'll be glad for your company, Taren said happily, grinning slightly from nerves. He couldn't wait to see what was awaiting him at the crack in the wall, but at the same time, he was a little apprehensive. There was no guarantee that it would be a good thing. He couldn't imagine what it could be.

The bronze flinched in surprise as an enormous tongue of flame erupted from the ocean. The blue-violet coloring, coupled with an enormous power that radiated from it identified the flame as coming from Medalanim. Taren snorted, figuring she was probably trying to burn off energy even as she cooled in the water. His suspicions were confirmed when she returned a few minutes later, still sparkling, though not quite as brilliantly as before. Excellent, so shall we go take a look? he said, leaping into the air without waiting for their answers. The bronze dragon circled overhead, waiting for the others to join him.

Post Re: Mourning
Lean smiled at Medalanim warmly upon her return. Much better. Now you can walk without sinking. she said, and chuckled a bit. She laughed outright at Taren's eagerness, and shook her head. She spread her wings and beat them several times, straining to lift her bulk into the air. Once airborne she soared on still wings, following Taren's lead because she did not know the island very well.

- - - - - - - - - -

Keia shook herself fully awake and stood on her paws when Medalanim returned. She smiled tentatively at the blue dragoness, then chuckled at Taren's question. She unfurled her wings and crouched, pushing off powerfully with her haunches to launch herself into the air. She beat her wings once she was at the height, soaring up to the huge black bulk of Lean. Lead the way, Taren. she encouraged brightly.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim made a great grin and followed. She walked to the edge of the cliff and fell off, gaining some speed before swooping back up to Taren's level and began flying circles around him. She was joyfully surprised in how much the heat her body was giving off was helping her in flight; creating a constant updraft underneath her wings that gave her better speed and agility in the air. Her abilities mimicked how light and free she felt inside.

Which section of the city do you remember the crevice to be? She asked Taren, looking down at the somewhat depressing ruins of the city.

Post Re: Mourning
In the northwest, halfway up the ramp circling the crater, he replied. He flipped around Medalanim in a cocky sort of way, then settled into a rather steep dive. He angled his body directly at the section he had pointed out, gaining speed as he fell. When he was a few hundred feet from the ramp, he flared his wings and backflapped powerfully. The rock wall reflected the resounding booms from his wingstrokes. The bronze settled carefully on the rock, it was wide enough for even the most ancient dragons to walk on, but still perilously thin to land on.

I think... Yes... Here it is! he called, knowing the others wouldn't be far behind him. The crack wasn't as wide as he remembered, his paw wouldn't fit. He growled with determination, gouging at the surrounding rock with his ivory talons. The bronze dug at the rock for several minutes before there was a hole big enough for him to reach into.

Taren thrust his forepaw into the hole, grasping blindly for a few seconds until he felt something stick in between the scales. He pulled his paw out, thinking he must have picked up a rock fragment, then froze as he saw a hint of palest gold and white among the bronze scales. Is that... an egg fragment? he asked incredulously. Surely this wasn't what Kurenai was trying to show him. He bent down and glared into the hole with one copper-and-bronze eye, but all he could see was dust and the remnants of a golden egg. Shock filled his eyes as he turned to look at his friends. But... What does it mean? he said proffering the paw with the egg fragment, as if one of his friends would know the answer.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia followed Taren with a stroke of her wings. She landed close behind him, settling her wings. She watched Taren as he tore a bit at the opening to get it bigger. She flared her nostrils at the scents she caught from the hole. When the bronze male took his paw back out from it, she instantly saw the pale gold and white egg fragment. Her eyes widened. It is. she said softly. When he offered his paw out, with the fragment still stuck on it, she extended her head forward and flared her nostrils, scenting the egg fragment. She pulled away from it and then edged closer to the crack, pushing her nose into it and scenting more. The scent was faint, but strong at the same time because it had been isolated from other scents and protected from the weather. She pulled her head away with a gentle snort. Is this Kurenai's scent? Or something similar to it? she asked, sending Taren a memory of the scent that she was picking up. If it is, but Kurenai is dead herself...Well, the only likely thing I can think of, is she laid an egg before the Fall. she offered in explanation.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim watched Taren land and she landed close beside him. Looking at the crack, she noticed how small it was, and was about to offer to help, but Taren took it upon himself and she politely stood back.

When Taren pulled out an egg fragment, her eyes widened. She sniffed the egg fragment, her nostrils flaring. The scent of of the hatchling was nearly gone, hinting of the egg's age. Of the few things that I know about eggs, She said to both Taren and Keia, One fact I know is that the scent of the dragon diminishes at a constant rate for about a century, if it's left undisturbed that is, and then after that, the egg begins to loose it's luster. I can tell you right now that this hatchling is less than a hundred years old because the egg has not lost it's bright color, but by the weakness of the scent, I would have to say that it had hatched long ago. Somewhere over 50 years ago. So it's not the egg that Kunerai hatched from. . . But could it have been Kunerai's child?

Post Re: Mourning
Taren stared at the egg fragment he held in his paw. Maybe, but... She never said anything to us, her family, about her being with child, he said, the bronze scales above his eyes wrinkled in a frown. He felt Keia's memory of the scent brush through his mind, then leaned down and breathed in the smell himself. Kurenai's scent is definitely there, but there's another one as well. Almost identical, but there's something different. I can't quite put my finger on it, as the humans say, he said to the dragoness's.

He backed away and sank into a sitting position, staring at the ground pensively. Even if Kurenai's child has survived all these years, assuming Medalanim is correct about the age, how would I find them? I have seen no sign around the island of another dragon besides our group, so they must have left long ago, he said, looking up from the ground.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia remained silent for a bit, then raised her head tentatively. I could help. she said quietly. She shifted from paw to paw, uneasy. I'm one of the best hunters in the Empire. It's why Galbatorix mostly uses me to bring in rebels and the like. she said, nodding to Medalanim sheepishly and with a bit of shame, because the blue knew what she was talking about. If you gave me a few days I might be able to track down a rough path that the hatchling might have taken from here. Even if the scent is gone there might be other things to hint at where it might have gone from here. Leavings, prey carcasses, scales that were shed during growth, that kind of thing. she looked away from Taren and shuffled her wings. I can't promise that I'll find anything of importance....But I can try. she hesitated, then scowled furiously and stamped her right forefoot on the ground. Her aquamarine eyes glittered with anger. I want to use my abilities for more than hunting down innocent people. she said, and snarled softly. She looked up at Taren, and her gaze was heated. Please can I try, Taren? she asked in a firmer voice.

Medalanim looked upon Keia with slight concern when she offered to help find the young hatchling's trail, but in her newly-changed heart, she felt it to be safe.

But it was up to Taren to decide, so she glanced at him questioningly, seeing if he will accept.

Taren listened to Keia plead with him to let her use her abilities to help find his sister's child, so that for once she could use them for good. He looked into her aquamarine eyes for a moment, and then smiled a dragon smile. Of course you can help, Keia. Of all of us, you're the only one I think would stand a chance at it, if the youngling has left the island, he said gently. He let a warm feeling of gratitude flow through his words.

I wonder though... Should we start immediately, or wait? Keia and Lean need to return to Uru'baen soon if they are to avoid the king's suspicion, and who knows how long it would take to find the hatchling, he thought pensively, allowing the others to hear the thought.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia brightened as Taren accepted her offer of help. Her aquamarine irises glittered with content and eagerness. She stood on her paws, shifting her weight with excitement to start searching. She paused at his warning though, her eyes narrowing. She snorted softly after a few moments of thought, and shook her head from side to side. No. I'm tired of being Galbatorix's dog. He can live without me for a few days. Lean, however, should actually return, though. She needs to be in Uru'baen in case he decides to take out his frustration on one of the other dragons. He could kill them by accident, and that would irritate him even more. she said. Lean snorted and blinked. True enough, but what about your parents, Zela and Kemon? Galbatorix knows who they are and can strike at them to force you into submission. Or at your unhatched brother. pointed out the ancient black. Keia hissed softly and bristled, her eyes sparkling with rancor. And my parents can take care of themselves. she retorted. Her expression became worried though at the mention of her little brother. She'd never seen his egg, but she knew he existed. She would be a poor excuse for a big sister if she let him be hurt because of her stubbornness. She sighed and her shoulders slumped in defeat. Alright, alright. You win. she grumbled, the tip of her tail twitching. She would rip Galbatorix apart herself if he went even close to her brother, no matter how powerful she knew he was. She snorted softly and looked up at Taren and Medalanim. If you two were willing to wait for me, I could be back here in roughly three or four days to start searching. she offered, tilting her head a bit.

Medalanim's heart twinged at the realization of how many dragons were under Galbatorix's grip. It made her pity them with their situation and only fueled her seething hatred for the man.

In answer to Keia's question Medalanim snorted, I for one would be glad to be off of this barren rock sooner than a few days, but if I must I will wait however long it may take. But it is not my decision to choose. After her statement she promptly turned to Taren for his answer.

Taren didn't hesitate, he hummed softly and looked at Keia with twinkling eyes. Of course we'll wait for you, he said serenely. He had gone this long without meeting his niece or nephew, and while he would like to meet them as soon as possible, he felt a few more days wouldn't hurt if it ensured the safety of another dragon. Fly fast, fly high, he said, bending his head to touch her between the eyes with his snout.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia nodded at Medalanim, then looked eagerly to Taren. Her expression brightened as he confirmed that he would wait. She nodded, prumming in her chest when he touched her between the eyes with his snout. She snorted softly and shook out her wings, standing on her paws. I'll return as swiftly as I can. she promised. She leapt out into the air and beat her wings powerfully, gaining height with ease. She waited patiently for Lean to join her. When the ancient black lifted into the sky, the air almost seemed to groan with the effort of supporting her weight. Keia keened a farewell, then banked and flew away to the north toward the mainland, Lean close to her heels.

Keia flew quickly, forcing her nest-mate to work hard to keep up. At the speed she was presently going, it would take another few hours of hard flying and no rests to reach Uru'baen. She growled to herself and increased her pace. She wanted to get back to the island fast so she could help Taren.

Finally, after at least five hours of swift flying that made her wings and shoulders ache, she saw Uru'baen on the horizon. Almost there, Lee. she called back to the ancient black dragoness, who trailed behind by several dragon lengths. Lean sent a mental brush against Keia's mind in acknowledgement. The sienna dragoness doubled her pace, eager to get there and then go back to Vroengard as quickly as possible.

She swooped down into the throne room from above, landing with a click and clack of talons on the stone floor. Shruikan was there, huge and black as ever. She ignored him, though she could feel him watching her. My King. she purred in a reverent tone, bowing deeply. I am happy to be home. she glanced up at Galbatorix. He seemed to be in a moderately good mood at the moment. He motioned for her to speak. I did not find any sign of the two that you sensed, my King. I found faint traces of scents, but they might be from a rogue dragon or something of the like. Or perhaps the two thought to erase signs of there time there before they left. I could search for them, if you wish. I recognize the blue dragoness. But not the other. Male, wasn't it? the king nodded absently to himself.

"Yes, I would like you to attempt to track them down. I need to know if they truly are still alive...." the king trailed off, then pursed his lips and nodded his head,"Yes, search for them. You can rest for one day then return to the island." he ordered. She dipped her head low in a respectful bow, then turned to pad out. Lean, who had landed shortly after Keia had, turned as well, but Galbatorix called out to her,"Lean, stop, please. I would like to discuss something with you..." he said. Keia didn't like the tone his voice had taken; dark and menacing, promising that a painful punishment was in store for the ancient black. Keia's lips curled back over her teeth in a snarl, but Lean glanced at her sharply. The look was a warning. Stay out of this, it said. Lean turned away and padded toward the King's throne, and toward Shruikan.

Keia swallowed, then did an about face and proceeded to leave the throne room. She couldn't leave fast enough before she heard Lean roar with pain. Her muscles tensed and she tried to keep walking, but when Lean's roar rose into a shriek, she lost it. She spun around and sprang forward, tongues of flame curling around her teeth. A massive black paw lashed out and sent her skittering into the wall. She looked up, dazed, into Shruikan's snarling face. The sienna tried to get up onto her paws, but a heavy scaled foot pressed down on her shoulder, effectively pinning her to the ground. Shruikan stopped snarling and looked up to the king, as if they were communing privately. The huge black male growled again, then let her up.

"What is the meaning of this, Autarkeia? You know the rules. Lean disobeyed my order to return right away, therefore she is to be punished." he said in a harsh voice. Keia's eyes sparkled with rancor. Not so. I told her to stay and sent Thorn and Murtagh back home. Ask them yourself if you like. she said simply, and snorted. Galbatorix's eyes narrowed, and she flinched,"So you disobeyed me. You, who I raised from a hatchling, cared for like my own daughter. Taught you, fed you, protected you." she cringed with every bit, knowing he spoke truth. She owed him her life, however much she might actually hate that idea.

She bowed low to the floor in submission, knowing it is what he wanted. Of course, my King. You are right. I beg you forgive me of my lack in judgement, my King. I will take whatever punishment you wish to give me. she murmured softly. He was silent for a moment, and when he spoke again it was a soft tone, comforting,"Of course I forgive you, darling. But you must be punished, like any naughty child that has disobeyed its parent." he crooned. She nodded in acknowledgement without looking up. "Lean, you are dismissed. When Keia leaves tomorrow morning I expect you to go with her and keep her safe." he said. Keia didn't even glance in Lean's direction, knowing what she would see; anger and worry.

Lean left, and then she was alone with Galbatorix and Shruikan. A shiver went down her spine. They wouldn't go so far as to punish her so badly she couldn't fly, and if they did that then Galbatorix would heal her enough that flight would be possible. What she was terrified of was of her spirit being broken, once and for all. She thought back to the island, of Medalanim and Taren. And of the egg fragments. She had to find the hatchling that belonged to that egg. She had to. As the first lash of pain crossed her body, and she couldn't help but cry out, she repeated that to herself in her mind, over and over. She had to.

OOC: Long post to answer long post. lol. Also, two things in Inheritance are mentioned here. Just to let you know.

Even though Medalanim watched Keia and Lean leave in such a jubilant way, a dark expression eventually fell across her face once they disappeared from sight. Deep in Medalanim's heart, she didn't know why, but she felt that they were only bound for pain and regret.

Taking a great sigh, and after looking down for a second in silent pity, brooding on what unspeakable horrors awaited them, she warily looked back up at Taren. I know that you probably want to train more with me today, but for now, I want to take a nap to recuperate my strength and relax my limbs. My sleep last night did not really give me the rest I need, and although I have energy, I can only go so far under the stress of the past couple days. I'll be sleeping in the ruins of the council building; that large foundation in the center of the city, if ever you need me or have any more information about that hatchling that could prove useful.

She turned about and with a great flap of her wings, she was airborne. Though it was more of a glide than flying, as it only took a minute from the crater wall to reach the crumbling ruin. Fortunately, she knew that the Old ones' dens were near the bottom of the tower, built to accommodate their normally massive size. Vrael's dragon, Umaroth, being an example.

She lowered herself and then flapped thrice to stop herself at the nearest cavern's opening. Once on the ground, she looked around. This one seemed quite small, and the ceiling had collapsed, so she turned to the next one, which was larger and more intact. It was dark, and wasn't as furnished, or comfortable as her cave, but the feelings and possible remaining energies there made it impossible to go back to for a while.

But in reality, she didn't come here to just sleep. She did at first, take a much needed nap. Her dreams were to her relief, short, and peaceful. She woke a few hours later, determining the time by the sun's angle in the sky.

Afterwards, she carved a pit in the brick surface of the cave with her claws. Then, through her sharp teeth, she hissed, "Adurna riesa." causing the pit to become flooded with water by the leftover magical energy within her body. Once the cavity was full, she stopped the spell and recited a new one. "Draumr kόpa." Focusing on Keia, the water turned ink black, then into a bright white, and in the white, an image of Keia formed. Though Medalanim stepped away and almost lost control of the spell when she saw Keia writhing and silently roaring as if in extreme pain. . . In front of Galbatorix, who sat with a distant look as if he wasn't aware of what he was doing.
Galbatorix, may you rot in the pits of the deepest, foulest hole in the world for what you do to dragons. . . Medalanim thought to herself.

She felt sickened to the point where she had to release the spell, causing the image to fade away. After that, she retreated away from the water and laid back down, haunted by what she saw. Seeing the same man who murdered Solir torturing one of the few creatures she trusted struck her to her core, and it took her a while to remember that Keia must be used to it as she had grown in that environment. Even still, it was wrong in every way.

She looked out of the entrance to the massive cave, and decided to herself that she didn't want to fly anywhere today, so she decided to wait for Taren to come to her.

Yet her attention was drawn when outside, a caw could be heard, and she looked up to see a creature that resembled a living shadow with white eyes staring at her from a distant perch as if it was some type of bird; it's feathers raised like defensive spikes. Medalanim hissed at the creature and it flew away. Laying her head back down, she said to herself, This place is so different. before closing her eyes.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren hummed back to Keia as she and Lean took off. He flapped his wings at them in farewell and watched them depart. Keia was soon much harder to see than Lean, who was so big she practically dwarfed the sienna. He felt anxious watching them go, who knew what kind of reception they would get? He knew that they had been gone for longer than Galbatorix had probably intended, but would he take it as a desire to be thorough or an act of rebellion? The scales between his eyes puckered with worry lines as he turned to look at Medalanim.

Actually no, the day is still rather young, I was thinking it would be best if you rested. Besides, something tells me this will be a good day for resting on the lip of the crater and warming my old bones with the heat of the sun, he said with a chuckle. He watched her glide off, bugling softly after her, and then leaped into the air himself.

The bronze circled around the volcanic crater for a bit, dipping down every now and then to get a closer look at something interesting, all the while caught up in his thoughts. He couldn't imagine how Kurenai could have had a child or even chosen a mate without her family or especially her Rider knowing. Tari had ever had a large mouth, for an elf, and when it came to something this special, he wouldn't have been able to keep it from the rest of them. Not to mention that the Riders had been in the habit of throwing large parties whenever one of the bonded dragons took a mate.

All of this made him worry more and more about why Kurenai would hide such a thing. She must have thought we would not approve of the male, he thought perplexedly. He couldn't imagine why that would be though. He grumbled to himself as he thought about it.

When the sun reached a point that suggested it was near midday, he drifted down to the cliff where Medalanim's home was. He landed lightly and surveyed his surroundings. A pleased snort sent a puff of smoke up into his eyes when he saw that the cliff was entirely bathed in warm sunlight. He settled on the ground and spread out his enormous wings, all the better to soak up the sunshine.

When he was resting comfortably, he started brooding again over his sister and the egg. With a flick of magic and his thoughts, he summoned the fairth of his family to him. He gently plucked it out of the air with his talons when it zoomed before him and laid it on the ground. One copper-and-bronze eye appeared above the picture as he gazed pensively at his sister. He knew without a doubt now what her distended belly meant. He sighed and laid his head next to the fairth and watched the sun cross the sky.

Something that bothered him as much as his sister continued to nag him in the back of his mind throughout the day, causing him to shift restlessly every little bit. When the sun was just past the two o'clock mark he gave up on resting and crawled forward until he reached the lip of the cliff. The bronze threw himself off and fell a few hundred feet before snapping out his wings and soaring towards the Council building Medalanim had spoken of.

It's me, he called so as not to alarm her, landing heavily outside. I was wondering if maybe you had heard anything from the others, he said, sticking his head into the cave where he sensed her presence.

OOC: Well I can't let y'all show me up, can I? :-P

Post Re: Mourning
Keia collapsed onto her side, gasping for breath through clenched teeth as she tried to control the waves of pain that she felt radiating from various body parts. Lean had tried to help her a few times already by entering her mind and taking away the pain, but Keia had refused. She'd made a mistake, she deserved punishment, even if she wasn't loyal to the king anymore. A lash of fire across her muzzle made her whine without meaning to. She growled to herself and steeled her nerves. The king was waiting for her to beg for him to stop. She wouldn't give him that pleasure, not now.

After a few hours more of continuous punishment without any resting, she was relieved to find out that Galbatorix finally had to consent that she wasn't going to beg for mercy. She shuddered where she was on the floor, a large pool of blood slowly growing larger underneath her. She was so exhausted she could barely keep her eyes open. Cool relief swept through her as the king healed her wounds. Not completely, because he wanted her to learn from the mistake. She already had, but didn't argue. She healed her body to the point that she could fly, and eased the bleeding in most of the wounds, but didn't heal them all the way through. That way, if she was careless and bumped into something or twisted her body wrong, the thin scabs would break open and the wounds would bleed again.

Once finished, Keia felt much better than before, but still weak. She felt a little bit of energy enter her, from Galbatorix most likely, so that she could walk and fly,"There, my darling. I am sorry, dear one." he crooned. She grunted and forced her body to stand, though her legs shook. She bowed to him shakily, her entire body trembling. It is nothing, my King. I will endure. she murmured, slightly breathless. She stood straight but still kept her head low with respect. Would you like me to leave right away for the island? she asked in the next second. He seemed surprised,"Keia, you are exhausted and should rest, at least for a few hours." he said, his expression anxious. She compromised. One hour. Then I will leave, if you wish it, my King. she said. He nodded,"Yes, alright. Go rest, my darling." he said.

She nodded tiredly and turned, walking slowly to the door, which opened without prompting. She limped slowly down the halls to the Dragon Stable, where she padded down the center hallway. Lean bolted onto her feet and quickly walked to her side. Keia was a bit embarrassed when the ancient black dragoness gently scooped a giant paw under her and picked her up like a hatchling. Her tail tip twitched but she didn't argue. She was too tired and sore. Lean padded back to her stall and laid down, gingerly placing Keia next to her. The sienna dragoness sighed and closed her eyes, relaxing when she felt a warm wing lower around her. Lean would watch over her while she slept. She let herself be dragged into unconsciousness.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim raised her head when Taren landed. Her face showed the torture that she felt watching the awful scene. Galbatorix is torturing Keia as we speak. She muttered, gesturing towards the water filled hole on the other side of the cave. The monster hasn't changed since the last time I saw him.

Her face folded into a snarl, and her tailblades made a loud screech as they scraped against the stone floor when she flicked her tail. I hope that Keia and Lean will return safely. . . preferably not followed.

Post Re: Mourning
The pupils of Taren's eyes narrowed to slits and he hissed vehemently, his tail lashing against the wall. He stopped when it produced a loud crack against the already not-sound wall and started grounding the stone under his paws into sand, his huge muscles rippling under his bronze hide from the effort of keeping him on the ground and not charging to Uru'baen and shaking the Oathbreaker in his teeth like he would a deer.

If he were not surrounded by wards and that beast of a dragon, I would fly there now and kill him, the bronze vowed, laying the slightest and most menacing emphasis on the word kill. He looked at Medalanim, his eyes still cold and full of rage. How did you find this out anyway? he asked, searching for something to distract him. He looked at the pool of water and turned back to her. You scried it? Was that wise, considering how tired you are? he asked, looking at her for confirmation.

Post Re: Mourning
For Keia, the hour of rest went by way to fast. She groaned softly when Lean gently nudged her awake, but she forced herself stiffly to her paws, wincing as the various and many scabbed over wounds along her body twinged and a few even broke open again. She shook herself awake and padded determinedly toward the door that led outside, Lean following just behind her. The sienna worked to hide her limp, though she knew that Thorn could still see it. He hissed at her as she passed; she ignored him, but Lean snarled back, causing the red-shrike-dragon to cower back into into his stall. She spread her wings and wearily took to the air, every stroke of her wings painful. Lean offered her help, but Keia refused. She'd taken worse beatings than this when she was still just a hatchling.

Even so, a few hours later, one of her wings failed to beat and she dropped sharply from the sky. Lean dove and caught her gingerly in her huge forepaws and instead of releasing her back into the air, simply held her close to her chest and carried her. Keia didn't have the energy to argue. She dozed off an on while Lean flew swiftly toward Vroengard once more. When they were fifteen minutes from the island, the sienna dragoness stirred and insisted on flying in on her own steam.

it was brutal, but she managed it. She tried to soar as often as she could instead of flapping, but she managed. When she entered the air above the island, she opened her mind and allowed mental contact, searching for Medalanim and Taren. I've returned. she tried to hide the hoarseness of her voice, though she didn't succeed. Where are you, so I can come to you? she asked, and she sounded tired now.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim lowered her head and gazed at Taren with cold eyes and a deep growl when Taren made his angry display. And I would follow you to him wholeheartedly. But right now, anger isn't something we should embrace; we have other things to worry about, such as tending to Keia's wounds and mind once she returns. I'm sure that she will need our help.

Then she looked at the basin. I said that I had energy. It was my mind that needed relie-

Medalanim's thoughts were cut short once she felt and heard Keia arriving. Her voice was ragged and weak, causing fear to well up in Medalanim's heart. With a soundless glance of surprise towards Taren, she darted past him and leaped into the air with extreme speed. She climbed in a straight angle and met Keia and Lean in the air. The sight of the young sienna's condition angered Medalanim greatly, causing her to snarl, flick her tail through the air violently and shoot dark smoke out of her nostrils to control herself. Land at my cave, Keia. You do not look fit to fly. Medalanim positioned herself alongside Keia to help guide her, with Lean close behind to catch her if necessary as they glided down to the cliff.

Medalanim had mixed feelings returning to her house so soon, due to the feelings she had for the place, but it was the warmest, cleanest, and most furnished cave in the entire city; perfect if she had to rest there. Hopefully, Taren would be able to help.

Taren hastily backed out of the way as Medalanim barreled out of the Council building and leaped into the air. He followed swiftly, circling overhead to keep an eye out for anything dangerous. Lean, I am very skilled in using my powers for healing. It's what I do best. Would you feel comfortable enough to leave her here with me while you go hunting for her, Medalanim, and myself? She's going to need the food, and so will I and Medalanim once we finish healing her. I'm going to use this as an opportunity to show her some of the finer applications of her power, he asked, speaking quickly as he darted in to land before the others while still keeping an eagle-eye out for danger.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia was surprised by how quickly Medalanim was beside her in the air. She scowled and snorted. I am fine, Medalanim. I've had worse than this before. she said, dismissing the need to rest. It would not be wise anyway, to heal me. I say this because I will be returning to the Empire after I help you. Galbatorix will become suspicious if I am completely healed when I return, even if I've been gone for an entire week. He healed me enough to fly, but not enough that I would forget that I disobeyed him. He will notice if the scabs aren't there when I go back, and he will know that I lied to him, then probably try to kill me for treason. Or simply brand me a traitor and banish me from the Empire completely with the threat of death on me should I ever return. she said tiredly. She did, however, comply to the wish for her to land. She banked to the side and pulled in her wings slightly, diving down slowly toward Medalanim's cave. She pulled up sluggishly and landed on her hindlegs, dropping down to her fore once she was steady. Her legs shook with the effort of standing, so she sat on her haunches and bowed her neck to the ground, her eyelids drooping.

- - - - - - - - - -

Lean glanced up at Taren, her eyes hard. I will hunt for you, Medalanim, and Keia, but you can't heal her, however much you want to. Like she's said already, it would be too risky to her cover if she returned to Uru'baen with no wounds from her punishment. She can handle herself; she's had worse punishments than this when she was a hatchling. she said grimly. She brushed her mind against Keia's to let her know what she was doing, and she received a faint acknowledgement. She banked away, leaving the three on there own to go hunt for them.

Medalanim huffed as she landed, heading towards her cave and beginning to brush the shards of broken glass to the side to allow Keia to rest there. Banishing you probably would be the worst thing he could do. It would just be giving you freedom and making you a friend without any boundaries between us.

She gave a small grin that soon gave way to a serious glare once she turned back and saw how tired Keia was. But by all means, you have to receive some assistance, Keia, else you will be no help. We may not be able to touch your superficial wounds, but possibly we can restore your energy and heal your weakened muscles so that you do not collapse and die on us.

Medalanim glanced at Taren to make sure he was paying attention. If you're with us long enough, Galbatorix should not know the difference upon your return, thinking that you merely rested your limbs instead of gaining outside help. Will you at least agree with that?

Post Re: Mourning
Taren hesitated looking from Lean to Keia and back again. Fine, if you won't let me heal her, then there's no need for you to hunt for all three of us. Find Keia something to eat, she's the only one that really needs it, the bronze said sullenly. He hated Galbatorix with a passion for making it to where he couldn't alleviate Keia's suffering for fear of some worse torture being inflicted on her. Bronze flames flickered between his teeth with barely contained rage.

He scowled again, but turned to help Medalanim move the shards of crystal so that Keia could rest in comfort. The bronze male reached out with his power and swept the remaining mess to the far side of the cave. Since he had used his power, even the smallest particles of the colored glass had been picked up. He looked at Medalanim when she spoke of healing Keia just enough that it wouldn't look out of place. He still didn't like it, he would have preferred to heal her completely, but he had to admit that in her condition, something was better than nothing.

Yes, if you're agreeable, I think we should heal at least your smaller wounds. You have plenty of those. He will think nothing of it if they're healed when you return, he said, looking at Keia. He lowered his head and looked her over, judging the wounds to see which he could do something about. His teeth were grinding against each other so hard by the time he finished looking at her wounds, that he wouldn't be surprised if the others could hear.

Keia... Some of these wounds are deeper than would be wise to fly with. Scabbing them over won't help if we have to fly hard and fast. The skin, and even some of the muscles, will have to be knitted back together, at least partially, or you could do yourself irreparable harm, he drew his head back so he could look her in the eye. Some of the wounds he had described appeared to have been healed, at least a little bit, but not enough. Her flight from Uru'baen to Vroengard had undone whatever small amount of healing magic Galbatorix had seen fit to use on her.

Post Re: Mourning
Keia grimaced as both of Medalanim and Taren pleaded with her to take at least a little bit of help and let them heal her. She sighed and restrained herself from snarling; she knew they were only trying to help. She grunted softly with gratitude when they both cleared a spot for her to rest. She forced herself to stand and limp over to the spot. She groaned softly as she slowly lowered herself onto her belly. I am well used to being abused and tortured. she said tiredly, laying her head down on her forepaws. Since I've hatched ninety-five some years ago. she sighed and closed her eyes. I don't want to put you in danger if I can help it. Galbatorix is cunning, both of you know that. she muttered to herself. She heard Lean's voice, and the ancient black sounded angry, more than Keia had ever actually seen her before. Autarkeia, listen to them for heavens sake! Both of them know what they are talking about! Swallow your pride, stop worrying about the insane man on the throne, and let them help you! snarled the ancient dragoness. Keia started, then sighed. Alright, alright. Yes, I agree. I don't have the energy to argue any more. she said, and closed her eyes.

Post Re: Mourning
Medalanim grimly nodded in agreement and immediately began to prepare herself. Touching Keia's mind, she allowed every last drop of her excess magical energy flow into the sienna, ceasing the sparkling light in her scales. It was enough to at least partially rejuvenate her, if not almost completely reviving her strength.

One her job was done, Medalanim looked up at Taren with a cautious look. Remember: leave the cuts and superficial wounds untouched, no matter if they are bleeding or not. We need only to repair Keia's muscles, and any other internal injuries that are weakening her. I do not think that Galbatorix would be so suspicious or thorough as to inspect every single inch of Keia's body and then some, so leaving the surface wounds alone should be a good enough cover. . .

Medalanim then shook her head and took a great sigh, speaking privately with Taren now, It is hard to imagine this young one has endured worse injuries. However I do not think that she has attempted to fly half way across Alagaësia immediately after. Let's just hope that her willingness to help doesn't eventually kill her.

She then placed herself close alongside Keia and kept a careful eye on her to watch the process.

Post Re: Mourning
Taren looked at Lean gratefully and sent her a quick flick of his thoughts that contained all the gratitude he felt for her talking Keia into allowing him to help her. Alright, now that Medalanim's given you some energy you should be okay for what I'm about to do, he said to her, using the deep, rumbling voice he used with all of his patients. He had found that most hatchlings, and even some dragons, relaxed considerably to the sound of thunder, which was good, considering he had such a deep thought-voice. He started humming slightly and touched his nose to Keia's side.

Unlike what two-leg's called healing, Taren didn't rely on the Ancient Language to form his healing spell. He simply pushed the magic into Keia's body and manipulated it with his thoughts to do as he wished. In some ways it was more refined than the other technique, even though none but a dragon could ever hope to use it.

He focused his mind, running it over Keia's body, stopping at each of the wounds he had noted earlier. The bronze knit muscles back together until they were whole and sound, willed the sides of the deepest cuts and gashes together until they weren't quite so deep and would hold in flight, and seared away any trace of infection. In his mind's eye, Keia was a net of bright white energy and the knots holding her together were the vital points in her body. It alarmed him to see how many of those knots were dark or dim. He spent the most time on the wounds at the darkest spots, healing them until their light had brightened to a dull glow.

One of the knots had been broken so badly, in itself it require a full five minutes of his attention to bring the delicate strands back together and then heal them to a slightly less degree than the others he had attended. He took his time though and did not begrudge the time and energy it took. This spot was perhaps one of the most important in Keia's body. The wound was a deep, serrated injury, most likely done by a claw, that had almost completely severed the muscle and tendon connecting her wing to her body. He could feel residual healing magics around the spot once again indicating that Galbatorix had "healed" it, but it was also nowhere near enough for what it should have been if she had been ordered to fly from Uru'baen to Vroengard.

After the wing injury he healed a few more spots, then allowed the magic to fade away. When the last tendrils of energy were gone, he stopped his humming and opened his eyes, pulling his head back so he could inspect Keia again. He nodded in satisfaction, although his lips pulled back in distaste. He had healed her to the exact degree he had been aiming for, and it was no more than she had asked for. The process had taken almost thirty minutes.

How are you feeling? he asked, his deep voice only slightly fatigued.

Despite the time it had taken to heal her, it hadn't taken much out of him. If he had healed her completely he had no doubts he would be hard-pressed to walk, but by restraining himself to merely making sure the wounds would hold he had retained most of his strength.

I could have healed her in just a minute if she had let me heal her completely, but what with having to make it look natural... he said to Medalanim and Lean privately, letting the thought trail off. He assumed they had been watching the process from inside his mind, but he wasn't sure, he had been so focused on his work he wouldn't have noticed if a herd of deer had run right under his nose.
