I agree with ElvenWarrior, Vanir is awesome. The way I see it is he just wasnt ready for Eragon, he underestimated him which had him on his heels. Also, Eragon is better than Murtagh with a sword, he was just tired from fighting all day while Murtagh sat on his butt. Also, wouldn't it be better for the Varden if Arya didn't become a rider because she is so powerful already. I mean if Vanir became the new rider that would be like 3 bad(Arya, Eragon/Saphira, Vanir/bad green dragon), as opposed to if Arya became the rider it would only be like 2 and half because Vanir doesn't have a bad dragon. And as a side note, if Vanir did become a rider, his dragon would be a total badass that could totally beat Saphira or Thorn.

I don't know how to put this, but you came in a bit late. Elvenwarrior gave up on his Vanir theory. Vanir isn't as powerful as Eragon, but Arya would make a better rider. The number of "badasses" doesn't really matter. Besides, then it would be all guys and it needs a bit of balance.

It seems Elvenwarrior could not deal with the amount of rebukes and changed the topic. However, answering your question, I believe Vanir will not play any leading role in book three. He was just a tool, (as I said somewhere in this forum,) Christopher Paolini used to allow the reader to know, the fact that 1) not all elves approved of Eragon being the Rider for which Saphira hatched, (tough luck for all of them) and 2) the only reason Vanir was able to beat Eragon over and over again was due to the fact that he, being and elf, had the speed, endurance and staminna proper to their race. Once Eragon received the "gift of the dragons," he beat Vanir in their first match. So it was speed and endurance what Eragon lacked, not swordsmanship skills. I hope this clears the doubt on the proper topic!

i think vanir is cool, but only cause he is an OK elf at swordsmanship. If he trained with eragon for a while he could become stronger, but not so much as eragon. I think that if Roran asks for magic trainig and the like vanir would be stronger than him cause he is an elf. vanir could kill many soldiers in battle, so i don't think CP will kill him off till the end, or some other time. and vanir could try to steal arya but i doubt it.

I will ask to allow me to disagree. Vanir is an arrogant, bigot, obnoxious, egotistical jerk, but he's not evil. That's one of the reasons he hates Eragon. Because since it was a human who betrayed the Riders, the elves hoped Saphira would hatch for an elf and not a human.

Vanir was too hate filled to be rider. He doesn't have the right stuff to be rider, I think he'll go corrupt and then he'll go to Galby's side I say.

I would say it was contempt, rather than hatred. He allowed his contempt to blind him towards other possiblities. This alone would make him a wrong choice as a Rider. If he cannot overcome his bigotry, he would not be able to be objective on other matters. At least that's what I think!
