The Fire Within
Ares stretched out on his rock that overlooked his little oasis in the Hadarac Desert. The sun baked the sands though it was still in the early morning, and Ares was enjoying every minute of it. The only problem was he was completely bored. There was nothing to do, and his talons were itching for a battle. What good was it to just let his talents go to waste?
No one ventures out into the desert, he grumbled. They know they'll just wither and die out here under the sun. In any case, it'd be to find water if they were stranded or something that I might see some action.
He sighed and stretched his wings, dipping his tiger tail into the cool water below. At least there were a few trees to shade the pool from the intense rays of the sun. He was thankful for that, rather than drinking warm water.
Ares took his talon and held it close, glaring at it for a moment. It was so spontaneous, he hadn't known if it would work this time like before, when his anger and adreniline went sky-high in his system...
Suddenly, it happened. A flaming ball of fire formed in his grip, dancing in a golden dance. It surprised him, and yet Ares felt triumph. But as quickly as it came, the fire went out.
What good is it to have this kind of power if there's no control?! Ares exclaimed to himself, slamming his talon against the rock. The result was a flamethrower being shot out into the air. Ares smacked himself in the head, exasperated.

Re: Fight Fire With Fire
OOC: Oh, I'm really sorry, but can you alter the title of this topic a little, Astral? There's already one in the archives with pretty much the same name... sorry! Anyway I'll post hehe.
IC: Solarae closed her eyes, letting the sensitive membrane of her wings catch the ripples of the air. The blazing updrafts, fueled by a bright sun, picked her up gently and carried her, drifting, along endless hills and valleys of golden sand. The Hadarac was a magnificent place really. She had been born not far from its eastern edge, and had visited it many times in her youth before the Fall had forced her to seek shelter in faraway lands. But now, things were getting better. She could fly freely through the desert with no cares in the world. The warm sunlight glittered off her brilliant orange scales, reflecting off them like firelight. It was a sublime feeling.
The sudden scent of another life in the desert brought the dragoness's sky blue eyes open with a start. She took in more of the air being sent to her from the ground, and caught a warm, slightly musky odor. It reminded her of a mixture of raptor and big cat, and it seemed like she might have smelled it before. She couldn't recall exactly what the creature was, though. She pulled in her wings and abruptly dove, heading towards a rocky area that the smell was coming from, and also making sure to stay downwind of the creature. She liked having the element of surprise on her side, just in case.
As she approached the creature (judging by scent), a sudden flash of fire caught her eye. She blinked, surprised, and crept in for a closer look. The smell of water and a little greenery also reached her, so she realized there must be an oasis ahead. So it made sense that a creature was here. She eventually came up behind it, and could make it out with her eyes as well as her nose. The word for it still escaped her, but she recognized something about it... or rather, him. The young creature looked frustrated by something. Well hello there. Was that you making all that noise with the fire? she chirped in a friendly tone, looking up at the creature from her place behind him and near the base of his rock.

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: Lol it's no big deal it was just a title in progress. Is this one okay though? I don't want to repeat another existing title. XD haha.
IC:
Ares huffed in annoyance with himself and then clenched his talons. With his ears, he sensed some movement behind him, though he hadn't been able to detect it until just a few moments until someone greeted them in a very friendly tone. He sighed, but didn't turn around. His reddish-orange feathers fluffed and the fur near his hindquarters rose ever so slightly, as he always made sure he braced himself in case it was an enemy.
I wouldn't call it noise, he remarked, just practicing. I thought I was the only one out here, as it is always, for the Hadarac is very unforgiving. Ares turned to look at who was behind him. It was a dragoness, small and sleek, with bright orange colors for scales. Her eyes matched the sky on a clear sunny day, though it burned with excitement like a roaring fire. You may wonder why I was able to sense you behind me. You see, I have a way of sensing different changes in temperature in a close circumfrence of myself. Your body heat behind me changed the air temperature surrounding us, thus making your presence known. But I can't tell from far away so I couldn't have possibly known you were coming unless you were a few feet or so near me. It's rather pointless. He shrugged, standing and shaking out his feathers. Call it what you will, I was always born with it. Now, what are you doing in my oasis dragoness? His emerald eyes sparked with suspicion.
Ares couldn't help but being wary. The desert was inhospitable, even for most dragon species. Surely this dragoness would as well feel the effects of the air and sun, and found the oasis to get some water. If you're feeling thirsty, please help yourself, he added with a grumble. I do not deprive any living creature of our land's most valued treasure, that which keeps everyone and everything alive.

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: Yep this one works fine lol. IC: Solarae saw the creature's fur and feathers prickle slightly just after she spoke. Call it what you will, I heard somewhat of a commotion before I arrived. And the Hadarac is the perfect place for a dragon. If you have a good nose and some common sense it's not too hard to survive here. Though I suppose that's probably because we can fly and leave the Desert within a few days, she spoke cheerfully, hopping up onto a rock to the side of the creature's. When he explained his ability to sense heat and changes in temperature, she leaned slightly forward with interest. Now that's a useful ability, if I do say so myself. As for what I'm doing here, I smelled you and saw your fire and came to investigate. Judging by that fire, you have more power than just the ability to sense temperature? she said with curiosity, watching the creature with bright eyes.
Anyway, my name's Solarae. Do you have a name, or do you hang out here so much that the sun's burned it out of you? she said, for the creature had not offered his name freely as most did when meeting someone new. Loners probably didn't have much use for names, anyway, and he seemed at least a little bit of the loner-type. She would ask more about that fire later. He had said he was "practicing," but the little burst of flame didn't seem too controlled to her. Perhaps she could help him out with that.

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: Yay! Lol glad it did. IC: Ares sniffed in contempt. Well, I'm sooo sorry, I don't know much about dragons as I haven't encountered a great deal of them, he grumbled, but the dragoness's cheerful attitude put his out of his darkened one slightly. He wanted to argue that even with common sense your energy would have drained at least for most creatures. But he wasn't here to debate with her whether someone could survive in the desert or not. She had asked him a series of questions and he was going to answer them, and she also made some statements he was going to respond to.
I guess, he mumbled, shrugging. My siblings and I seem to have senses that no other gryphon has. Artemis always liked to swim, Apollo can fly so high, and Athena can grow things...really well. Ares looked up, glowering tremendously. For your information, my home is here and I've always liked the heat. Therefore, your logic is flawed, he said, though he couldn't help but laugh at that last statement and it was percieved as a joke. The dragoness, Solarae as she had introduced herself, had some kind of a quality that allowed him to feel somewhat looser. But I do not give my name out freely lest I feel as though I can trust the stranger. He looked Solarae up and down and said, You, however, seem to be trust-worthy. My name is Ares, one of the few gryphons left in existance.OOC: Heehee I like rping with a sarcastic character, who's a little rude. It kinda makes it fun. XD

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: lol yeah they're funny. As are cheerful and lovably-arrogant charries. IC: Solarae watched the creature with a smile, blue eyes sparkling mischeiviously when he mentioned he didn't know much about dragons. Then he has much to learn, she thought to herself, her tail twitching with amusement. This one interested her. She would stick around him for a while, she decided. He began speaking again, explaining that he and his siblings each had odd abilities. As he described them all slightly, Solarae nodded. Sounds like the four elemental abilities, to me. Fire, water, air, and earth, she remarked when he paused. She was getting even more curious now about how deep his gift with fire ran. He suddenly got defensive about his home, and the orange lashed her tail. No need to be offended, my good sir. You seem quite comfortable in the desert, she spoke with a laugh.
He continued, finally telling her that his name was Ares, and she laughed again good-naturedly, dipping her head when he introduced himself. Well that makes more sense now, though I don't see why introducing yourself would hurt. Anyway, it's nice to meet you, Ares the gryphon, she said in a friendly tone, happy to finally learn the type of creature he was. A gryphon... seemed familiar, though she couldn't recall at the moment where she had seen one before. So how much do you know about your affinity to fire? I, uh... might be able to help you out with that, actually, she said with a bright smile, leaning back so that she was sitting on her haunches, tail swishing calmly behind her.

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: Indeed. IC: Ares cocked his head at her, when she mentioned the four elements. It all made sense to him now, and yet why hadn't anyone figured it out earlier? Surely Apollo would have found the answer almost immediately. After all, he was the one who liked a good puzzle. As she commented on him liking the desert, he ruffled his feathers and preened for a short moment. Yeah, well...I only like it because of the heat. None of my other siblings would enjoy it out here much less live here.
As for why introducing myself could hurt me, it wouldn't...not necessarily, he pointed out mildly. Knowing a name can be dangerous especially if it gets to your enemies. Let's just put it that way. He smiled. It is a pleasure to meet you as well, Solarae the orange dragoness, he added chuckling. As for my fire knowledge, there isn't much I'm aware as far as how far it stretches. Ares lifted his head in curiousity. You could help me learn to control it? How?

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae grinned at the young gryphon, twisting her head to look around at the surrounding desert. Except for the small oasis, it was all burning sand and red jutting rocks and clear, open blue sky. I think that's something we have in common then. The desert is pretty much one of the most awesome places on the continent. I know of a couple other deserts to the east, as well, she remarked, unfurling her wings halfway and letting the fire-colored membrane soak up some sunlight. When he asked about how she could help, she laughed and stood up.
Well, I'm no expert... awe, who am I kidding, of course I'm an expert. Anyway, this is how I could help you--by teaching you some of what I know! she cried, and with that, her entire body suddenly erupted into blazing orange and yellow flame. The fire swirled and roiled around her, shimmering and scorching at the same time as it licked at the air. Solarae grinned. She did like to make a lasting impression. She eventually let the flames die out, though she kept her scales incredibly hot (so much that the air around her rippled and shimmered).

Re: The Fire Within
Ares nodded in agreement. The desert only provides the best heat, and is the only place I know that rarely, if any, gets snow, he added with a shudder. A couple more towards the east you say? I may have to investigate that more, he replied, smiling a gryphon-smile.
Modest much? he joked right before Solarae became completely engulfed by golden flames. He stood up quickly, surprised, for never had he seen such a magnificent display of fire practice especially one done by a dragon. When the flames died out, Solarae's scales shimmered against the air they were so hot. How were you able to do that? he exclaimed, scoffing. There must be a trick. I've never met a dragon who could erupt in flames from their scales. Secretly, Ares was envious. He wished he could find the secret to controlling the element that burned within him. It was so difficult, and yet without the proper training, Ares was afraid he would hurt himself or someone that he could possibly come to love.

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae laughed, blue eyes sparkling with mischief. Modesty can eat my scales; I tell it like it is. Anyway, not many dragons can do that. A few of us, myself included, have a special connection to our fire. I think it's because we're descended from the orange dragon clan of the Hadarac or whatnot... some such ancestral inheritance type blather. My point is that I'm one of those dragons. And, apparently, though you're not a dragon, you appear to have the same connection, she explained, grinning as she did. Now that her scales were so hot, she didn't feel like cooling down again.
Since I can tell you have this connection, I should also be able to help you work on strengthening it until you can control your fire. Now, I didn't learn of my fire-eruption skill until I was in dire need. But you'll have a teacher, so you shouldn't have to wait until such need arises, she continued, lowering her haunches again until she was reseated on her rock. This gryphon's attitude reminded her a little of a younger version of herself, and so he was inadvertantly starting to grow on her. She was hoping he would accept her offer to mentor him in the ways of fire.

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: Heh "modesty can eat my scales..." And it's funny too, because he's about 150-200 years old but I guess that can count as young for a gryphon. IC: Ares let out a screech of laughter. I think if modesty ate your scales, its tongue would get burned. But he mellowed and lay back against the rock as Sol told him of a few dragons decended from a clan of orange dragons in the Hadarac. It was incredible, wondering if possibly Ares had a connection to a certian fire that no other gryphon possessed. He didn't know why, nor have any knowledge as to why his siblings had their abilities as well. Perhaps one day he and his siblings would get together again and discuss their findings.
But I bet I will one day, Ares replied, his chest puffed out a little. I have an affinity for battling after all. It seems to be what I'm best at. He calmed a little and then said, But I guess it'd be great to have a teacher teach me the tricks of the trade. Alright, let's do it up! he exclaimed, grinning. What are we going to start with first, flamethrowing? Or maybe to bring my talons ablaze? That'd be sweet! My enemies would be seared to a crisp!

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: lol he's young to Solarae. Also his attitude and personality really do remind me of her when she was younger, which is kind of funny. IC: Solarae giggled at Ares's joke, amused. I've never thought of it that way, she remarked, glancing at her own shiny orange scales. He continued, getting more and more enthusiastic with every word and quite obviously accepting her offer. So battling's what your best at, eh? Same here, man. I can probably teach you some fighting moves as well, then, especially ones that will incorporate fire-based abilities, she informed him cheerfully, thinking over what moves she could show him. She had many, though she had never really taught them to anyone before... at least not in a very long time. But yes, first it will be best to work on your fire. So how strong is your connection to your inner flame, Ares? Your practicing earlier, just from what I noticed, looked a little erratic. I think the best thing to start with would be strengthening that connection, she explained. She was basically making this up as she went along, but that didn't make her words less true (besides, her favorite method of doing anything was to wing it).

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: Ah, so true. Heh heh that's cool though. Ares is like the little brother or son she never had. IC: Ares chortled and said, That's awesome! At least we have that in common, I'm all for learning new battle moves especially if they have something to do with my element! He stood up, flexing his wings and talons. His ears went back as he tried to think, exactly, what she meant by a "connection. I honestly don't know. I've never been able to actuall...get a feel for fire much less know how strong my bond to it is, he explained it the best he could. But his bright green eyes never dimmed. But I'll find out, I always find a way to make it work! He was a bit defensive, he didn't want Solarae to see he was weak or anything along those lines. He was very proud and wouldn't admit defeat even if it was staring him directly in the face. Of course, I'm all for strengthening. It's what I do when I train to go into a fight, he replied with a crooked grin.

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: Lol Indeed. IC: Solarae smiled at the gryphon, enjoying his intense eagerness. He seemed almost passionate about wanting to learn more, a trait she shared. She just hoped he wouldn't be as stubborn as she was... that might cause problems later down the road. But, for now, she smiled lightly at him. Calm down, kiddo, you can't learn everything all at once. As for your connection to the flame, I guess the best thing to do for now would be try and find it for sure. I think it's a little bit like the two-legs' connection to magic. It's buried within you, and you have to dive deeper and deeper into yourself until you find it. Just feel for the heat and fire within you. Awe, look at me, gettin' all philosophical. Usually I'm not so eloquent. So, yeah, just try that out. And think of very hot things--picture the fire in your mind, she spoke, trying to think over everything she could as she did. As she told Ares what she thought he should do, she reached to her core for her own connection to the fire. She ignited the flames within her so much that she felt it immediately. Ares would have to practice until his own fire was as innate as his heartbeat.

Re: The Fire Within
Ares sheepishly preened a couple of his feathers and then sat down, calming himself from within. He knew when Solarae stated no one could learn everything at once, it didn't keep his spirits down. Ares was eager to learn everything, even if it meant many years to learn it all. He listened as Solarae explained how to feel his inner fire, where he will find the key to accessing his element. He laughed at Solarae when she sounded more of a scholar than a laid-back dragoness. Then, Ares played over the words inside his head again...
Hot things...
He closed his eyes...
Ares could imagine these things well. It was the only thing he really liked besides combat. He pictured a campfire, a burning forest, the rolling hot winds off the sandy desert, and then he pictured what he felt like he could really connect with; the heat...of a battle. He imagined his talons slashing at flesh, clanging with metal, and tearing at cloth. Arrows shot just inches from his face, swords nicked at his underside. Then he pictured the fear in his opponent's eyes as he raced in for the kill...
And then, he found it. Within his soul, he found a small, blood-red flame flickering as delicately as a candle. He held onto it, feeling its warm, and then fed it his excitement for combat. I can feel it Solarae, I can sense it! he whispered.

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae finished speaking and watched, patiently, as Ares closed his eyes and began to concentrate. She could almost see his mind working, delving within himself for his fire. She continued to observe the gryphon, waiting to see what would happen. At last, she felt his mental contact as he whispered, in a voice filled with wonder, that had found his fire. She smiled brightly, excited to be moving along like this. Alright, excellent, Ares. Just hold onto it now, and just keep doing that until the connection feels firm. When you have a good grip, try to access the fire. Try to bring it out of yourself and into the world around you, she told him, at the same time checking her own magic and watching as one talon ignited. Bringing out one's inner flame was the hardest part. Once that was accomplished, the whole training process would go much more smoothly and it would be easier for Ares to use the fire for more complicated moves.

Re: The Fire Within
Ares kept his eyes closed, claiming hold to his fire, and watching it burn within him. He listened to Solarae's voice as it medolocially wove around him, explaining how he must bring his fire to light. He held on as though his very life depended on it. The flame grew bigger and hotter still. He watched it spark to life, he could feel its very essence beat like a heart. With his talon he made a fist, unconciously, until he felt something hot form in the middle of it. Ares opened his eyes and looked down, amazed that he called his fire element without it dispersing or reappearing spuradically. He only watched with wonder, afraid to move in case his flame would go out. His eyes travelled to Solarae, waiting for her to advice him what to do with it next.

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae continued to watch the gryphon, waiting to see what he could do. He slowly brought up one foot and made a fist, and she watched excitedly as a small flame was ignited between his claws. His eyes opened and she grinned at his look of amazement, and he quickly looked to her. Awesome, Ares! Now, I guess the best thing to do would be to move it around a little. Try moving with it, just to make sure the connection is firm. And eventually try to extend the fire, to make it bigger, she guided, igniting a small fire of her own in one paw and waving her arm around, making a little trail of fire in the air. She then let the fire spread until it covered her whole forearm, and then let it disperse into the air when her demonstration was finished.

Re: The Fire Within
Ares swelled with pride, his fire becoming a little more easy to control. He swirled it in the air, as Solarae told him to move it so he could get a feel. Curiously, he watched Solarae allow her own flame to extend to her forearm and then disperse into the air. He attempted that, watching it grow and crawl along his arm with glee. Eventually he pushed the fire over his shoulders and wings, becoming cocky. Ares watched as his wings were enflamed, yet they had not burned him. He dragged all of those flames back into his clutches, his eyes glinting arrogantly. Before he could get a good grip on it, the fire shot out of his fists and into the air where it became a huge fire ball, one that did not diminish. Ares flew up into the air, calling down the element only just before it got out of control. Dang it, it got away from me! he growled. I had it too!!

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae raised one eye-ridge as Ares tried to spread the fire faster, to more of his body. He wasn't taking his time, and the flame suddenly escaped. He raced up to retrieve it and the orange dragoness laughed. You were doing well, but you need just a little more patience. I know, I know, patience isn't one of my strengths either, but it's just until you get better control over your fire. Once you are more in control of it, you'll be able to let it cover your entire body, she said with a grin, watching the gryphon as he settled back down. He was powerful with the flame, there was no denying that, but he would need to exercise more thoughtful control before he could wield it with precision and finesse in battle.

Re: The Fire Within
Ares was panting as he landed next to Solarae. I am being patient! he growled. I've been patient for the past ten years how this thing works! I only discovered it then; I should have a grip on this by now! He fumed for a while, fiddling with some rocks next to his talons. I thought I could get somewhere, you know, seeing how far I could push my limits. I can get far. I know that I can! he protested, his feathers prickling in annoyance. This dragoness was obviously very skilled with this type of element, and he was appreciative, but she didn't know everything about him. His ego was beginning to make him agitated especially towards the fact he failed at something he could have easily achieved.

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae watched and listened as Ares grew increasingly frustrated. Apparently this kid had a temper. When he ceased speaking, she began again. Hey, just relax, kid. It doesn't take five minutes to master it. And don't worry, you'll definitely be able to master it easily. It just takes some practice. You have to think about it a little the first time you do it; it's like flying. At first you need to pay attention to everything you do and control all your movements, but eventually everything is pure instinct. I know you've been working hard, and it's actually not going to take that much more work to get control, she told him, her voice open and friendly in an attempt to calm him down and get him back on track. The one thing she could not do was to get frustrated herself, and luckily she was still far from it.
Now, just take a few deep breaths and relax, and get the fire in your claws again. Then, when you start to extend it, do it gradually. Think about it as you do it; watch it creep upwards and make sure it's secure before you continue extending it. I know it sounds tedious, but trust me, that's the best and most painless way to go, she continued with a grin.

Re: The Fire Within
Ares growled again and again before allowed his feathers to lie flat on his back. As Solarae began to explain how practice is the key to mastering something he was more than willing to learn from his mistake rather than admitting to it. He took her words into consideration as she told Ares to relax, find the fire again, and make sure to keep it controlled. If she was telling him all of this, Solarae must know what she was talking about. Though Ares was still extremely annoyed, he closed his eyes and found his fire, a little more quickly this time. He obtained it in his talon, and watched it grow, a little slowly this time.
I know it takes pratice, he replied solemly, sounding thousands of years old rather than mere hundreds. But for the longest time, my siblings and I could not find out what made us so different from the rest of our kind. I was the one who discovered this first, and after time I began to wonder if I was just some freak of nature, something that didn't belong with my gryphon kin. Eventually I just found solitude here in the Hadarac, away from everyone else. Sure, I often go surveying the land to see if I can't find a battle to win but otherwise it's the desert for my taste.

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae let Ares growl his frustration to the air, but was pleased when he eventually calmed down enough to try again. The gryphon began to speak once more, this time his tone more serious. She nodded as she listened. I think your ability, and your siblings' abilities, make you all special in a good way. If you use your power for the good of others then you might find more peace. It happened to me. I wasn't sure what to make of my abilities... sometimes I felt like an outcast. But I found others who accepted me for who I was, and I started using my fire to fight evil because I realized that's what I was supposed to do. At least that's how I view it, she said, letting herself open up to the young gryphon as he accessed his power. She laughed then, her blue eyes sparkling. And once you work out how to control your gift, I think we could go find some evil to fight together. Double the fire power oughtta double the damage, don't you think? she added cheerfully, watching Ares's progress with interest.

Re: The Fire Within
Ares watched his flame as Solarae explained the responsibilities of having such a gift as fire. He never wanted to use his element for evil, only to help others and himself whenever it came to battling. I need to find my siblings one day, he whispered. I need to know if they've been making as much progress as me. He looked up at Solarae as he clutched his talon to dispurse the flame. You were considered an outcast? I thought all dragons had a unique power about them. More fire power would prove to be more useful and special wouldn't it? He laughed at her analogy of double fire power. Indeed, I think the more power we have against an enemy, the more likely we'll over come him/her. His green eyes sparked while thinking of all the adventures and good use he could put towards his flame, and with such a good teacher as his guide the possibilities were endless.

Re: The Fire Within
Ares let his flame disperse, and then murmured something about finding his siblings. Solarae was silent, thinking she'd comment on it later. Perhaps, once the gryphon mastered his fire, they could find his siblings together. The dragoness was always up for a quest. He seemed surprised that she was once an outcast though, and she laughed grimly. Nah, most dragons don't have special abilities like this. Most just have normal fire and occasional access to magic. And you're right, my fire didn't exactly make me an outcast, though it helped. It was mainly my ancestry. In case you haven't noticed, I'm not exactly the proper size of a 600-year-old dragon, she started, pausing to give a snort, I am actually one fourth Fanghur. That's the main reason I wasn't accepted at first. But then I found dragons that accepted me. And nowadays, most dragons do seem to have special magic or powers or somesuch, so it's no longer an issue. Solarae smiled gently at the gryphon, surprised at herself for revealing so much. But, she supposed, as her new student, he deserved to know more about her.
When he continued about what she had said earlier, about finding enemies to fight, she laughed. Yeah, man. But first we gotta keep working on that fire of yours. Let's try some fight moves that only involve your limbs being encased in fire, since that's what you've mastered so far. Ya' think you're ready? she asked, her excitement gleaming in her blue eyes. She stood up, indicating that some fight training would begin. It was time for a (slight) break in the routine. Doing some fight moves always made Solarae feel more calm and relaxed; more "in the zone."

Re: The Fire Within
Ares mumbled, Oh. I didn't know that about dragons. He looked up with his vivid green eyes sparkling. What's a Fangur? I've never heard of one before. As you can tell, I've only heard about dragons and gryphons, well, obviously gryphons since I am one, he laughed. But living out in the Hadarac, well it makes you a nomad, oblivious to the outside world. His eyes widened. You're 600 years old?! I didn't realize that...well you called me a kid and I'm 250 so I figured you'd probably be a couple hundred on me but...wow you must have seen so much!!! he exclaimed. He became all the more excited when Solarae initiated some battle practice. His wings flared open as he took a stance towards Sol. When it comes to fighting, I'm always ready, he said quietly, calmly, like that before a nasty storm hit. That was one thing he was good at, was fighting. Maybe he and Solarae would exchange battle moves to better themselves with. Ares knew himself that he didn't know all the battle moves out there, so learning from a dragon would definately help better himself in that area. He wondered if Sol would feel the same...?

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae took a battle stance. She was a little smaller than the gryphon when they both stood, but that was hardly a disadvantage. Alright, let's just try some moves to loosen up our muscles first. Just stretch and roll and leap and such, she began, stretching out her wings luxuriously. As for Fanghur, they are small, dragon-like creatures, but they can't breathe fire and are usually not as intelligent as most dragons. But not all of them are less intelligent, she explained as she stretched out all her limbs and began flapping her wings and lashing her tail to exercise the muscles. She laughed as he commented on her age. I've seen enough, Ares. In fact, I think I've seen a gryphon before, but I forgot what they were called. What did you say your siblings' names were? she continued curiously, her memory returning. Being around him, the scent and appearance, and something he had said before, seemed very familiar. Solarae moved on to tougher preparatory moves, jumping to one side and hitting the ground in a roll before springing back upright. She was thinking as she did, trying to remember where she had seen a gryphon before.OOC: Haha I just realized something a couple days ago. You'll see in my next post.

Re: The Fire Within
Ares nodded eagerly. He listened as Solarae explained to him about Fanghurs, including how they act and whatnot. When she asked what his siblings names were, Ares replied, I have two sisters named Athena and Artemis, and one brother named Apollo. He and Artemis are both older than me. And you say you've met other gryphons? That's awesome! He grinned. He mimicked Solarae and stretched his wings as well. Then he leaped into the air at a pretend enemy and screeched, swiping his talons a couple times. He did a couple kicks as well with his back legs. These warm-up exercises definately put him in the mood for practicing battle moves.

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae lashed her tail excitedly and let out a spurt of flame. Of course! I remember now. I met your sister, Artemis, a long time ago. We didn't speak much, but you definitely remind me of her now that I think about it, she exclaimed enthusiastically. She continued stretching, jumping to one side and landing in a roll, springing back upright again and lashing her tail to one side, the leaf-blade at the end gleaming in the sunlight. Alright, I think we're ready. I think I'll just show you a few of my fire-related moves, and you can practice those. That work? she spoke with a grin. Rather than wait for a reply, she immediately got into a combat stance, tensing the muscles of her forelimbs. She stood near Ares, facing away from him. She leapt forward and tucked herself into a somersaulting roll. When she completed the roll she leaped forward, her front claws ablaze with trailing fire and outstretched, as if pouncing on invisible prey. The fire-streaming talons laced through the air, raking down until she landed, fire still licking at her forearms. She lashed her tail again, feeling more energetic than ever.

Re: The Fire Within
Ares widened his eyes in surprise. Him and his siblings were always secretive even from each other. He was curious as to how Artemis and Solarae could have possibly met at one point. Before he could ask, Solarae jumped into practicing battle moves. Ares brought his attention immediately towards her. As she demonstrated, Ares watched as she somersalted with her ignited flames as Solarae clawed at an invisble enemy. Once she went back on her feet, there was excitement and energy radiating off of her as though Solarae were the sun itself. Ares felt the fire within himself flare as he waited in anticipation for a few more battle moves Solarae could show him to practice with.

Re: The Fire Within
Solarae glanced back to look at Ares, and saw the eagerness in his eyes. He was certainly ready for this lesson, from the looks of things. Being over two centuries old, he would probably pick up the moves rapidly. The dragoness prepared for another attack maneuver, tensing her muscles and letting the flames flicker along all four limbs, now. She rapidly sprang to the side, twisting her head to one side to add some spin to her movement. She twisted around to the left as she jumped high into the air, but as she completed her 360, she rolled so that her underside was exposed in the direction of her spin. All four limbs stretched out at once, swiping the air and leaving trails of flame. Her tail followed her legs as she kept spinning, the blade slicing through invisible prey. She then righted herself so that her belly was facing the ground again and lashed her tail to stop the spin. She landed a few dragonlengths away from Ares, now facing toward him rather than away.
She then bolted forward again, doing another somersault but this time kicking into the air with all four limbs again, as if she were rolling underneath a larger enemy. She continued the roll and twisted as she leaped away from this "enemy," landing so that she faced it. Try a couple o' those, Ares. The kicks and swipes will be much more effective with the fire. In fact, in most enemies you'll just burn through 'em. No resistance, dude, she said with a grin, her canine teeth gleaming as her lips peeled back to fully reveal them.

Re: The Fire Within
OOC: I know we had a plan for this when we talked about it, we're finishing up the training and then going off into the desert?
IC:
Ares felt Solarae's enthusiasm spike his own, as though it were contageous. I'll give it a shot! he exclaimed, flaring up the fire near his talons. At first, Ares hesitated as he practiced the somersault Solarae had demonstrated. Once he performed that smoothly, Ares was able to mimic the moves almost flawlessly. The more he got into it, the bigger Ares's flames became. Soon parts of his body left trails of fire as he swiped at his invisible enemy. The only difficult move he had done was the 360 in midair. Everything else he could do fine without hesitation. The 360 was stiff and uncoordinated. However, he managed to get the gist of it as he landed in front of Solarae, looking at her expectedly and as eager as a puppy. His eyes shone and the flames had died down to the point where the air around his body shimmered.
