I ve just re-read Eragon and am half way through Eldest.
I think that Roran could be the king after Galby is de-throned. This is because in Eldest Eragon is talking to Lifaen the elf about King Palancar and when humans first arrived in Alagaesia.

(Chapter Title : Arrow To The Heart, Bottom of page 201)
'Eragon said, "King Palancar, who was he? Is that how Palancar Valley got it's name?"
This time the elf turned and looked at him with amusement.
"You have as many questions as leaes on a tree, Argetlam."
"Brom was of the same opinion."
Lifaen smiled, then paused, as if to gather his thoughts. "When your ancestors arrived in Alagaeisa eight hundred years ago, they roamed far across it, seeking a suitable place to live. Eventually they settled in Palancar Valley- though it was not called such then- as it was one defendable locations that we or the dwarves had not claimed. There your King, Palancar, began to build a mighty state.
"In an attempt to expand his borders, he declared war against us, though we had no provication. Three times he attacked, and three times we prevailed. Our strength frightened Palancar's nobles and they pled with their liege for peace. He ignored their counsel. Then the Lords approached us with a treaty, which we signed without the King's knowledge.
"With our help, Palancar was unsurped and banished, but he, his family, and their vassals refused to leave the valley. Since we had no wish to murder them, we constructed the tower of Ristvak'bean so the riders could watch over Palancar and ensure he would never again rise to power or attack anyone else in Alagaesia.
"Before long Palancar was killed by a son who did not wish to wait for nature to take it's course. Thereafter, family politics consisted of assassination, betrayal, and other depratives, reducing Palancar's house to a shadow of its former grandeur. However, his descendants never left, and the blood of kings still runs in Threrinsford and Carvahall"

THis made me think that Roran may have the bllod of kings and mayb a desendent of King Palancar. It was jus an idea, i would like to read wot u think on it

but then again there are many desendants in palancar valley in Carvahall and Threrinsford so he may not have the blood of the king in him but i agree that he may become king

I have the feeling this won't be true. Eragon will soon become one of the most powerful people in Alagaesia, and he doesnt want a king. However, he is supposedly leaving, so who else would he trust to be king if not the person he grew up and is his "brother in all but blood"?

i dont think roran is power hungry enough to want to be king

but he is wise, good and fearless leader so he has the qualities of a good king

If Murtagh isn't killed in the last book and he doesn't want to become king ( personally, I don't think that the ppl of Alagaesia would trust him much and I can't think of a reason why they shouldn't... ) then Roran should become king. He would be good for Alagaesia. But he'd have to learn to read first. It would help.

i understand all your theory, even if mine is wrong i still think that Roran will become king, even if he doesnt want to be. he has the ability to talk to crowds and get there hearts racing, to fight a mighty battle, to understand problems and sort them out and above all else people respect and look up to him because he is powerful. Eragon wont be king because he leaves alagaesia, if Roran does not become king then mayb Nausada mayb become queen but who knows???? i think king Orrin wil definatly not become the king because he has his own country and wen Galby is overthrone he will keep his country but be allies with Alagaesia.
(just a lil side note, i think the guy who is playing Eragon is hot!! the only thing i dont understand is, how are they going to show Saphira and Eragon's Telapathic communications???)

the only way i can see roran becoming king is if practicaly everyone wants him to be, but who knows, maybe they'll set up a council with one or two people from each race (including urgals) and govern alaegia (excuse the spelling) with a council

That could happen, except for the Urgals. I don't mean to be rude about your theory, but I'm not sure that the families of those ppl that were killed by Urgals on galby's orders would want to be governed by them. Unless you're talking like making a representative for each race... That might work.

and those people who didnt like it very much would just not trade, but if u dont include the urgals they could get mad and attack

You should be a diplomat when you grow up... The ppl in charge could make a treaty with them and arrest anyone that makes trouble... Then the jails and prisons would be pretty full 'cause I'm sure a bunch of folks would have something to say...

doing that would be like locking up everyone who disagreed with a law, every jail would be overfull
