The Unity
This was something I just wrote one day. There is more, but I haven't finished Chapter one yet. This is just the prologue.
The Unity
Sergeant Henry ran down the scarcely furnished corridor, his uniform was drenched in sweat and his ranking badges were torn off. Not to mention that his uniform was half burnt off his body, the fresh scars showing underneath. The sounds of explosions could be heard close to him but he had an order to carry out at all costs. The Sergeant just hoped that it would be enough. As he ran through the corridor he thought back at why this happened, how it could have been prevented and more importantly, how he could have been with his family instead of out in the middle of nowhere fighting these unstoppable beings. Another explosion rocked the ship, sending the Sergeant off his feet and into the bulkhead. He felt bones break as he held up his arm to break his fall, he gritted his teeth and continued on his way. On another corridor to his left that led to the crew quarters he could hear people crying out in pain and other yelling in frustration as they couldn't put out the fires that were springing up everywhere. As much as he would have liked to stop and help the wounded to the medical chambers, he had his orders. He sighed in frustration and continued, the stairs were close by. The sergeant would have used the elevators but they were off line due to the battle. He jumped down the stairs as fast as he dared, not stopping for anyone, for he knew that if he failed then their fate would be the same as his. Ten levels, that was how far he had to go down. He wondered why the bridge was so far away from the reactor, especially since they were the two most important parts of the ship. But no, the commanders wanted to be able to see out of glass windows instead of screen that could display the same quality at the exact same size from inside the ship. Either way, the main reactor was at the rear end of the ship where it was near the engines. Unfortunately for Sergeant Henry that meant he had further to run. The cheap carpet that once adorned the ship's interior was all but burnt away leaving a sticky mess that made it harder to run. His deck came up, the door blown open and the Sergeant could hear weapons fire. Sergeant Henry drew his sidearm, a 10mm pistol. “Send us to war and all I get is some pea shooter, figures.” He muttered to himself. He entered the deck, wary of whatever would come his way. He didn't have to wait long as two figures covered in head to toe in metal armor presented themselves. One was tall, with two arms coming out of each side of it's body and a gun in both upper hands. It was thin and didn't look like much, especially when compared with the alien next to him. It had muscles, it had muscles on its muscles and looked ready to tear the ship apart by itself and capable of doing so. It was shorter than the other but only slightly. They stood holding and looking at a dead human, thinking god knows what. Both had helmets which allowed for freedom for sight and protection whilst supplying them with the air they needed to breathe. That was where Sergeant Henry had to shoot. He shot twice at the one with the arms, hitting it in the visor and shattering it. The alien dropped it's weapons and grasped at the front of it's face, trying to keep the air it breathed inside. The other dropped the man and, after bellowing a war cry, charged for Sergeant Henry, who had but to aim for a second before he fired the rest of his clip at the charging beast. His training, as well as a large chunk of luck, directed his shots for he managed to break the visor or the other alien as well, who fell over from the lack of air it breathed. Sergent Henry took a deep breath and walked past as fast as he could for some of those aliens breathed dangerous substances. As soon as he felt he could breathe safely he ran, caring only about getting to the core.
Sergeant Henry felt he used the rest of his luck as he got to the reactor as he didn't run into any more enemies. He also didn't run into any allies either, or any corpses. The reactor was massive for it had to produce a large amount of energy, but it had no artificial gravity around it for the complex reaction that took place within it's shielded core. The pain from his broken arm was intensified in the zero gravity of the Reactor so Sergeant Henry ran over what he knew of the core as he jumped off the deck to take his mind off of it. A series of complex machines inside the chamber of the reactor incinerated small chunks of plasma which forced the plasma inside to spin around the central shaft which turned a giant motor. It was good that Plasma was easy to come around in the universe he thought offhandedly. Sergeant Henry finally came to the main computer and slowed himself, the massive monitors dwarfing the chair that served to hold the Chief Engineer while he monitored the status of the core. The monitors circled the chair 360 degrees, the only way accessible being from the top of the station. As soon as Sergeant Henry sat himself in the seat he didn't so much hear as much as felt another explosion rock the ship and had to grip the console to keep himself stable. He hoped that the core was still stable enough to increase to it's full potential. Punching a sequence of buttons, Sergeant Henry initiated the emergency override of the Chief Engineer's protocols and brought the Reactor to it's full potential. An explosion near him distracted him for an instant, enough to see a swarm of aliens enter the zero gravity environment. Sergeant Henry worked faster, adrenaline lending him clarity of thought. His fingers blazed across the keypad as he fought to bring the Hyperdrive on line. A warning flashed on the screen as it indicated that something was out of sync. “COME ON!” He yelled. Bursts of energy began to fly past his head so he did the only thing he could, he engaged the Hyperdrive regardless of the warnings. In the distance the sound of the Hyperdrive slowly activating could be heard, unfortunately, Sergeant Henry wasn't able to hear it anymore. He felt to his neck as the cauterized wound slowly bubbled, then he smiled as his body drifted began to drift in the effects of null gravity. He had completed his mission, that was all that mattered to him because it meant family would, at least, have some warning before the aliens began to attack their home.
The strain of the Hyperdrive tore off the alien ship from the hull of the Galileo, freeing the human vessel. It was being bombarded from all angles as the Galileo began to speed off into the next realm, a place which was unimaginably called Hyperspace. The ship tore a hole in the fabric of the Universe as it made it's journey back home. The crew, however, didn't.
