it just proves that eragon isnt all powerful, he still has to train, a nice twist in the story

no...eragon is better at that..it said that murtagh was good at it but not as fast or agile..eragon would be able to beat him in just a sword fight without any magic if he wasn't tired

because, thorn is much younger than saphira, and murtagh hasnt been a dragon rider as long. He still looks mainly human. Plus eragon did the blood oath thingy, and that made him more elfy. Murtagh is stronger because he learned the secret spells only galbotorix knows

STRENGTH COMES IN TIME!!! so if they are younger and didnt have the blood oath ( eragon was much more powerful after blood oath) then he shouldnt be stronger!!!

It's because galbatorix the mighty-evil teach murtagh himself with powerful dark magic, and eragon still on a shock and exhausted.. Wait! If the forbidden ancient magics was the main factor causing eragon's lost... Will eragon learn them to??

You guys have to remember Galbatroixs strength increases with every kill and he might have taught Murtagh the same thing so his strength increases.

Eragon should have lost, if he won easily there will be no story, ya!

Losing just makes Eragon realize how far he has yet to go.... it also strengthens his conviction that some magic is supposed to remain secret. Eragon was also tired and would have definately beat him at swordsmanship if he wasn't. Saphira was hurt and tired too, so if they had met him in the beginning of the battle... Murtagh would have most likely lost. Galbatorix probably knew this and that's why Murtagh waited before attacking.

I don't Murtagh is getting his power from people he killed.... remember he said he learned how to take energy from other energy (like fire). That's probably how he did it. Also Galbatorix is teaching him and he's had centuries to perfect his craft.

Even though Murtagh is with Galbatorix now... I still don't hate him or even slightly dislike him. I still like Murtagh, because it's not his fault that he has to fight with Galbatorix. We know that he hates Galbatorix, but apparently he's also started to pollute Murtagh's mind with his thoughts. Somehow I still think Murtagh will come back.

yea i don't hate im but i do kinda dislike him beacause he vaules his life way more then he vaules the other ppl in the so he wouldn't die for the good of the rest of the world or even consider eragon helping him because he was afraid of galtorix finding him and killing him

Actually, I believe the book says that they were equal in ability.

When it comes to good vs. evil, good will always prevail... but in this case... its a tough chance.... i couldnt believe it myself that eragon lost to his brother... i mean it was a total shocking ending to the book eldest...but it gave it a good twist.... how it will turn out who knows.... especially since eragon is an elf now gave readers alot of hope to winning the battle but our hopes were squandered in the end when he seemed totally and udderly helpless... i was sad and dissapointed... but we will hopefully find out soon what will happen... and hopefully soon....
But i found it weird that although the book eragon was shorter than eldest, while reading it, it was vise versa for me... maybe i will find out as soon as i read them again....

well. good should always prevail. but unfortnatly in real life it doesn't & won't.
..but then that's thegreat thing about books. it's your ending. what i do like, is that if good wins (i totally think it will) it's not been a peice of cake. the good vs. evil is a hellatious battle. full of sacrifice and pain. cp has put that in his world of eragon. and that makes the story sooo much better.

Yes and remeber how it said that Murtagh did not even act as if he were losing energy but just as if he were using it from others.., but I still think Eragon would have won because of the things he has learned I wonder who picked the land they were fighting on I mean it can not be just a coincidence eragon learns how to use energy from other living things then Eragon get to fight there I mean.... But out of all Eragon would have won if it were not for his loss of magic in the wards, and always worrying of Arya and if she were ok.... Gosh its like he doesnt think she can do anything shes just an elf ay....

I totally agree with you on this one; Eragon has gone through a lot of loss and pain while at the same time this is part of the process of his personal growth and maturation. I feel that because of this, he has not lost the true perspective of the mission he chose to fight for; it has also allowed him to remain humble, sensitive and empathic towards the pain and worth of the goals which have been set in the storyline. It complies with the hero-journey of the genre.

LOL, I was just so furious and frustrated. I really thought he would kick Murtag's rear. After I cooled down, I listened and read the books again and realized that it would have not fitted the plot.. How would the reader have known (in such a shocking way) about the family connection between Murtag and Eragon? How else would we have known about the part the Twins played in Ajihad's death? (I thought they were no good since their first appearance in the book; even if I couldn't understand what was the reason for their antagonism to Eragon, "the elf" and Orik?) I was SOOOO upset at the fact that he lost in all so many ways.
