Post Golden Compass
One of the best children books I have ever read is getting a movie. I hope it stays true to the books, because it does deal with religion.

It's coming out in December and features actors (actresses) like Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman, and Eva Green. So far the trailers look good.

i'm sorry, I couldn't get through the first chapter. I just stopped. I thought it was REALLY boring.

In my experience of people reading the book, you can either read it or can't. The first book starts slow and picks up the pace. The second is fast paced at the very first chapter.

When I found out that it was going to be a movie I thought about reading the book, but everytime I try and get it from the library...all the copies are already checked out. I could buy it of course, but then I thought.."What if I don't like it."
Oh and thanks for telling who some of the actors are. I love Daniel Craig (he's so cute :D ) and Nicole Kidman.

It's rather funny. Daniel Craig has already worked with Eva Green in Casino Royale, and is going to be with Nicole Kidman again in the remake of Invasion. I can't help thinking of James Bond when I see him though. I always thought Lord Arsiel would have more of a beard and the set seems a bit more modern then I imagined it.

oh, agreed. I have always been a fan of those books-made-for-movies, especially when it comes to fantasy. The Golden Compass is certainly going to follow the footsteps of other great fantasy movies, including the lord of the rings and the chronicles of narnia. I really can't wait for it's release.

Darn US changing the titles. I think Golden Compass is better though since the others are also items. It brings a sense of unity.

You know...the more I see the trailor for this movie the more I want to see it. I'll read the book after I watch the movie. I was going to read it before, but I am currently sick of reading. I thought I'd go back to the beginning of my book collection and start over to try and get back into it.

So yeah...its official! I just requested the book from the library, so I should get it soon and be done with it before the movie comes out.

Post Re: Golden Compass
i saw on here that some one said the golden compass deals with religion?? im sorry i dont remember your name. you are partly correct. i also tried to read the book and found it boring and making no sense. a friend of mine looked up the author and what they books are really about. she found out that the author is an atheist. (of course this is his personal choice) she also found out that at the end of his third book he has the children kill God. he also hates c.s. lewis and the chronicles of narnia and his entire point through the whole series is to show the "other" side of God. to try and prove that God doesnt exist. for those in here who are christian, i urge you not to take your children to this movie. i do the same for those in here who are not sure if they are christian or not. if you believe in God then i strongly urge you not to take any child to this movie.

this is not meant to start a "war". i am only saying what i found out and voicing my own opinion of the movie and books. if there are those who dont agree with me then thats fine. not everyone will agree on everything at the same time.

Okay, I knew someone was gonna mention this sooner or later

Both (movie and book) are works for entertainment only. Anyone who believes something from a fiction book like that.... its dumb. Its like the "Da Vinci Code" thing. Its a BOOK. He said it wasn't supposed to be taken as a historical book, just a creative work.
Maybe Phillip Pullman is an athiest and such, I have heard that too but i still like the books. I'm on book 2 of the trilogy right now and they are good books!
It takes awhile to get into them but I think it just takes a more mature reader.
Don't judge the books or movies until you have read them yourself.
Someone could have made this up and its not true at all, you never know.

Valkrayie ~ you have a good point. and if the information i got came from someone i couldnt trust then i would diregard it. but it did come from someone i trust. i did try to read the book and just couldnt get into it. it just wasnt making any type of sense to me. but thats just view of it.

im reading the email she sent to me right now. she said that there was an article done on him in which they called him, "the most dangerous author in Britain. " Look it up for yourself and make your own decision.

like i said earlier, im not trying to change anyones mind. i was just passing information that i was given. i know how it is to have someone bash an author that you like. i enjoy reading all of the harry potter series. and yes i am a christian and dont argue that there is witchcraft in the books. as far as knowing if there were christian material in there as well i couldnt say.

but my view on those books is this. i am secure in my faith, in myself and in who my God is. i do not agree that these books should be made available to young children . i think that they are too impressionable. but again this is just my opinion and this is not intended to start any kind of battle. :)

i dont mean to hurt yours or anyones feelings. if i have then please forgive me. that wasnt my intention.

They aren't my favorite books or anything, but they are good.
Also... young kids are not going to look at the books and say.. "oh, this is supposed to be god and this means god is evil."
They dont think like that yet. It's teens and adults it would affect.

One quick post: I read, watch and listen to stuff from all different religious types of artists, but it doesn't mean they're trying to convert you, just expressing their views and helping eveyone understand the world's opinions a little better. I think it's a bit petty that somebody could interpret something like this. I don't have a fit everytime I have a religious education class at school, or read the narnia books, or listen to music by Christian bands, or see Christmas decorations everywhere.

Now, before Annie kills us all, maybe we should lay off the religion a little lol

Post Re: Golden Compass
I saw the movie last weekend. (day after release) Just so that you know, they are taking all of the religious stuff out of the movies.

I thought that the movie was really good. It followed the book a lot better than I expected it would, and a lot better than the Harry Potter and Eragon movies. (A LOT better.)

I also own the books and read them a long time ago. They are written well, and the story is interesting, but I thought that the whole killing God in the ending thing was really weird. It was just kind of pointless, really, in my opinion.

There is one thing about the books that I absolutely despise and have a huge amount of contempt for. It said that only humans and the one rolling around race of alien things were sentient, and that no animals were actually conscious of themselves! This wouldn't have affected me so much, but it made one of my best friends believe it too, for a while. I think I am convincing her otherwise, though, with examples of dolphin intelligence. (I love dolphins.) Also, I think that reading these books and the Ann Rice Vampire Chronicles helped to turn her into an atheist. That's not a bad thing, but she seems sadder and more hopeless now, so it's kind of depressing.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic. I really liked the movie, and I think the books are okay, though I would recommend them to an older audience. (They can be very complicated and some of the ideas expressed are a bit beyond most young children's minds.)

Saw the movie as well. I give it 5 stars. Really well put together, high budget put to perfect use. Nicole Kidman was absolutely superb, along with Dakota Blue Richards, who played Lyra. Sir Ian McKellen did an amazing job voicing Iorek. The best fantasy film I have ever seen since Lord of the Rings. And, even better, the religious symbols are almost completely covered up, so there is barely any religious arguement.

Oh, and Peter Jackson did not direct it. It was made by the same studio though.

I saw the movie and i thought it was good. The only thing i noticed that had anything to deal with religion was that they were called demonds but other than that i didn't notice anything. I like Lyre's demond thing i thought he was a cool character i can't remember is name though. I like the weird characters usually but oh well. What i don't get is how people are offended by things like that its finction and the last time i checked fiction ment it isn't real.

Would you say the same thing if I published a book about killing people who aren't white and saying they are evil? Its not entertainment when its made specifically to teach children to destroy who you are or what you believe in.

(I have no way of knowing if any of you are African, Asian, or other wise. It was just a example. I am not racist in anyway.)

ok... really bad example.... how can i say this. :? . i went to see the movie and read the books for the the storyline itself, not cuase it had anyhting thing to do with teaching or religion... why i say you gave a bad example is if the book was just about so guy killing people who arnt white... why would i read that... theres nothing more to the story, there would have to be a story to it( not being racist or anything...)?? what im getting at is theres more to the golden compass than just religion. and like i said before, you dont have to belive in anything he writes about religion... just sit, relax, and enjoy the accual movie....

I didn't mean you had to like it i ment why would you think it is real. If i read a book like that i wouldn't like it but it wouldn't mean i believe people of other races are evil. I was only saying why would you believe it. I'm not casist so i wouldn't read a book like that and iwould be against it.

It depends if it had the n word (or any other word that is raceist) and it kept refuring back to it probably not. I'd probably read it but it depends, have you Watched Uncle Toms Cabin i watched it in school its about a slave who was killed because he wouldn't give in to the slave breaker. White people at that time said it was racist but i wouldn't think it was so i would probably read it if one of my friends had it. What about you, would you?

That is exactly my point. What I am trying to say is that I would never read a book or watch a movie like this and that I am against it because it is doing exactly what my example was doing, except to my religion, not my race.

I'm trying to prove what I've said in my last three posts too.
Religion might not seem like its all about, but this is a part from an e-mail I recieved that cofirms that it may not seem like it, but when it all wraps up, it will deffinetly be all about religion.

Quote:
In the last book, a boy and a girl are depicted representing Adam and Eve and they kill God.
Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that 'My books are about killing God.'

i have heard that too, but.. well im not gunna argue with you guys anymore, all that i was saying is that you can read these books and watch the movie without having to take in anything the author/ director belives... and just to let you in on something... in the movie, its rated pg... you really think they would throw somthing in there about killing god... i dont think so... not doubting your article or anyhting, cuase i know pullman is an atheist, but so far out of the first and second books, without reading an article on it myself till the movie came out, i would have never thought of the books stating anything like this... and even then, there are little bits of views to this... not much at all, proving my point... theres more to the books than just the authors views...

I see nothing wrong with reading them or watching the movie. But the fact that he wrote them to spite something is soooo stuiped.
You dont write books to spite something you write them to prove a point...
I actually encorage reading books that differ from your opinion. This helps you to see from different view points and makes your opinion more worth while. People wont listen to you if you know nothing about others peoples opinions or wont listen to there own opinion.
You can also argue your point better if you know more about what your facing.
Understanding is what makes people wise.

I read the book thinking that it was Christian based, so you can imagine how surprised I was to discover that it was written by an atheist! I still liked the book, and I went to see the movie I liked it. I thought that they did a good job making it into the movie. The only reason I don't like it is because of the fact that it brings up bad morals. I'm actually reading The Subtle Knife now, which is the sequel to The Golden Compass. It's not as good as The Golden Compass, but I still like it. I'll probably go ahead and finish the trilogy just so that I can give my own opinions.

I just saw it along with 2 other movies in a row. It was good but DAMN...that cliffhanger has me bouncing.

And for those who are wondering about the Athiestism in it: Dust= sin, Daemon = soul =overall> dust is sin that moves into body thro soul

which is complete BS. keep godism out of good movies...though I want to see the next ones..i want this all sorted out hehe

Dragonlord, the religion conflict was not so much over the movies as it is over the books

The movies did a GREAT job of keeping the religious... ness down to a smart level and if you only see the movies and don't read the books the conflict makes no sense.

the reasons christians oppose it is because the movie is to draw the people to read the books which were written by an atheistic author who hates god and in the end of the third book the children supposedly kill god.

Yes because one: that old title is bad memories and; two, and an answer for the end of your comment,: it seemed you were so please next time, don't think anyone doesn't know everything...to advoid something you don't like, for me: god, you have to know it and things around it.

Another reason, though not having to do this, though it seems you don't mind other people's mind as you put your own in: I am angry enough at my family, espeically my brother.

end of all this, no more comments to counter act me PLEASE, because I am not afraid to lose this account on swearing and etc.

We're all one big happy family

I think that there is no right answer and that people can choose what to believe or not

Of course, that kind of reasoning gets tricky when one is talking about the younger audience that this is meant for. I see why people are angry because they don't want kids to be influenced, but people are allowed to write stories about pretty much anything. I guess parents could speak to their kids about this book if it bothers them....

Ah, it is too complicated, I think i'll stop before someone attacks me.

I agree but there's a bigger point and fact...

The kids don't know! Even if they COULD figure it out they wouldn't CARE! it's a blasted movie ment for entertainment. Go ahead and the man make a god hating movie, he's jsut expressioning himself in a clever but stupid way.

Post Re: Golden Compass
Here is what I thought about the movie:

The book's plot was well adapted to fit the big screen. They left most everything in there that would really be necessary and a few extra things as well. A few scenes were cut up and a little too short, but worked just fine with the entire movie. It did start out a little slowpaced, but picked up around the bear fight. So overall, the script was good.

Now, we move onto the acting. It was brilliant! Dakota Blue Richards did a fantastic job portraying Lyra, using the right accent and movements, and with the same innocence as in the books. Daniel Craig did Lord Asriel just perfect. You could feel both the love he has for Lyra and the strong strictness he has over not just her, but everyone in his path. Lastly, a most impressive performance by Nicole Kidman who suited Mrs. Coulter just perfectly! She was the spotlight of the movie, bringing on a darker form of CruellaDevil (if I spelt that right). So overall, acting was spectacular.

Now, we move onto the overall feel of the movie. One reason I adore the books is that they are a part of fantasy that is entirely original. No one would ever have thought of the icey terrain and parallel universe things, but yet Philip Pullman did. The movie was able to catch these aspects and weild them to where they fit on the screen. And the special effects was certainly nothing to sneeze at, either. The bear fight proved this to be true.

So, overall, I give it 4.5/5 stars. No movie is just perfect (except, perhaps my own movie script for Eragon! ). It really was able to catch the mood of the story.

Now, you all knew it was coming: religion. One thing I despised above all else was the fact that in the third novel of the trilogy the children kill God, a statement that gives me a shudder to think of it. What this author was thinking when he wrote such garbage for children, I can not even dream of! Certainly, he could have made the next epic fantasy trilogy that was totally original without the mention of anything on the matter of Chrisianity. And the movie's box office goes to show that the U.S. is still not for it, which disappointed the company greatly.

So, I enjoyed the books and movie because they were original and epic, with a wonderful plot. But I hated them becuase of the religious aspects they bring up. And, by the way, for those of you who are still not convinced that Philip Pullman wrote the books to criticize Christianity, then know that he, himself, has confirmed this in some interview. If you don't believe me, look it up.

That is all I have to say.

Um...true it was bad for the religion but we DO butcher God. PLUS...i DOUBT kids will see that point, they wont care...if this fact didnt get out we wouldnt know or see it or care.

The ironic thing is, is that most people wouldn't care-myself included-if it weren't for the children.

Have you read the books, DragonLord? If you haven't, you should know that book 1 of the His Dark Materials Trilogy, known of course as The Golden Compass or The Northern Lights, was the book the movie was based off. I can see where you might try to reason that kids would not care, and that may be true, for the first book in the trilogy does not go that in depth with religion, in fact, it is barely mentioned. No, the first book and movie is simply a good story full of drama, suspense, and originality. However, when one reads the entire trilogy, especially in book 3, The Amber Spyglass, one can see that religion is the majority of the book, and in fact, the entire trilogy. Now, as I've said, you might be right that some children would not look at it as people killing God, but those kids, I am sorry to say, are ignorant and need to know the truth. Just because a few people haven't noticed the religion, does not mean that it has been completely erased in all minds. It is still there, and still strong.

I don't care....sometimes not knowing is good! If they knew it would upset them or they still wouldn't care! And if you don't like it, don't bother reading/seeing the rest! Its a MOVIE for KIDS imagination. This is things that help people become what they like. As for me, I'm more Agnostic and Don't really care. The guy made something that signals his "religion" Let him do that, its his stuff. The kids like it because its something that gives them ideas for their childhood. And so what if they "change." its their life and people are trying to convert others alllll the time, all's fair. So just drop the hurt over a dumb movie ment for entertainment, not religious debate.

Oh, a little snappy, aren't we DragonLord? Look, I don't want to argue with you. You're the one who started arguing with me. All I did was state my opinion and you go and throw it down, as if it was trash. I appreciate your opinion and if you want to think that way then fine, but don't dare try to uproot anyone else's opinion! And cool down! It's not like we're debating for a presidential election or anything!

Maybe we need to just do as I think mentioned before: just stop talking about the religious parts in it and focus on the actual movie. That would probably be best.

Sorry if I annoyed you, by the way. I was just stating my beliefs.

And I don't think it's terrible to state your beliefs or religion in books. It's just that I am clearly for some and against others.

I guess the rankings are not to make other people look at you differently. I guess they're there to make you feel good about yourself.

That really doesn't make sense. So getting back to the movie...

I thought it was really good, and they did a good job protraying everything from the book.

It wasn't, though. Eragon was 1 hr. 45 min. long, where as The Golden Compass was about 1 hr. 58 min. long. The director said that he had always planned to cut the movie around 2 hrs. Some scenes were a bit rushed, but they nearly had to make it short so as to not bore the audience. Trust me, if it had been 2 hrs. 30 mins. like most fantasy movies, it would have been boring. So I suppose they did it just right.

Yea your probably right...I DID think they rushed a few scenes and were blunt at parts.

Probably, the scene that I felt was rushed a little too much was when they bring Billy Costa back to the camp. It doesn't ever show him dying, I think. All that is done is his mother comes to him and says something like "We'll get your Ratters back!"

Another thing that I was disappointed in was the religion... LOL! Just kidding! No, another thing that I was disappointed at was when they decided not to leave in those last three chapters. For those of you who don't know, there were actually supposed to be scenes from three other chapters in the book on the movie. But, the director decided to cut those scenes and save them for the sequel, The Subtle Knife. Those scenes were my favorite scenes from the book and I really wanted to see them.
