Post Most underrated animals
In your opinion, what are the most underrated animals out there? Which animals do you feel are constantly overlooked/ignored and should get more recognition.

For me: Bison/Buffalo (they're the same thing)

They're the iconic symbol of North American wildlife as well as a symbol of the old west. The plains Indians relied on them for their livelihood. Bison survived the Ice Age and the mass slaughter of the late 19th century. Despite all of this, they seem to be constantly overlooked by almost everyone. How many books and movies are there about bison? None that I can think of. (National Geographic documentaries don't count.)

Post Re: Most underrated animals
First of all, this is somewhat of an interesting topic... lol

Bison are cool. They are a success-story of conservation (the part about them returning from the brink). Hopefully we can help other critically endangered species attain the same level of future success. :)

For me, this would have to be various sea creatures (I LOVE marine organisms!!!) :D Such as nudibranches (sea-slugs!), sea-cucumbers (they can autoeviscerate, or throw up their own innards to deter predators), the portaguese man-o'-war (that might be spelled wrong, but the critters are awesome: they are a cnidarian that actually sails across the ocean!), and various other critters. 8)

Also, I know a ton of people adore dolphins and so they're not really underrated or anything, but a lot of people also don't understand how truly intelligent they are. They are self-aware, and perhaps the most intelligent animal on the planet besides humans. I don't understand how people can hold them captive in tiny tanks or even kill them! Think about how you would feel in a little concrete tank: that's how they feel! They really are that smart!

Sorry, I had to rant a little lol. 8)

I would say lobsters, because they're immortal.
And any one of the creatures found at the bottom of the ocean. Giant squid, for example.

I agree Makaveli, lobsters are awsome. =)

I'd also have to say the wolf. True, a lot of people like them, but a lot of people also think their evil for some reason.

And the hyena, I like hyenas a lot :D

Wolves are certainly underrated, but so is the Antiguan racer (Alsophis antiguae).

This is the world's rarest snake, and almost no one has even heard of heard of it.

http://www.wolfquest.org/bb/viewtopic.p ... 94eab01827

^^More info.

So are, generally, elephants. Elephants are among the top 10 most intelligent animals! They are extremely intelligent, much more than dogs and horses and various other "smart" animals.

@ Makaveli: Lobsters are immortal? o.o

Aardvarks...also known as the Anteater. I mean they just look unique, and have that amazingly long tongue, and no one ever talks about them. Even lobsters get more attention than they do.

How about some underrated dinosaurs?
Liopleurodons are underrated! So are iguanodons!

T-rex is the most overrated dinosaur ever! No wait, I take that back. Velociraptors are the most overrated dinosaurs ever. T-rex takes second place. By the way, a giganotosaurus could kick a T-rex's butt!

AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE DINOSAURS!!!!!!!!

Actually, I adore Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor. They are overly-popularized, but I still adore them. And though Giganotosaurus is larger, it was disadvantaged in some ways. I think it had weaker jaw strength, and also I believe I read somewhere that T-rex had a larger brain case and better vision (contrary to Jurassic Park, T-rex's had great vision, and also I'm not sure about that, but I have a source that said something along those lines). 8) And Liopleurodon's not technically a dinosaur, but you're right in that it's totally awesome. I also love the ichthyosaurs, which remind me of a reptile version of a dolphin. They're so pretty.

Oooo and I love Baryonix! That dude's sweeeeeeet. And Parasaurolophus!!! and Quetzalcoatlus! (though again, that dude's not actually a dinosaur).

In conclusion, I adore dinosaurs. 8) lol

Post Re: Most underrated animals
I have a few:
First is a dinosaur. The Utahraptor. It's nearly twice the hight of a human, and when hunting in packs, it would kill anything, even a fellow predator like an Allosaurus.

Then, the Platypus. I mean, it's a mammal, who lays eggs, has the body of a beaver, the head and feet of a duck, and a venomous spike in it's hind legs. How cool is that?

And last, the Crow. They are now considered the most intelligent creature apart from humans. Yes, even smarter than Dolphins. They have done multiple tests, and they are self-aware, are incredible problem solvers, even have their own expansive communication system where news of something that could be a danger to them will reach the other end of the continent within a few days. So that whenever that danger is seen, the Crows, even if they haven't seen it before, will instantly recognize it, and avoid and/or attack it. Not to mention, they have the largest brain in comparison to their body size of any animal.

Yeah, Utahraptor's cool too. All the dromaeosaurids are (wicked cool toe-claws, baby!!) :D

I don't know where you're getting your info about crows from, Brisineo. What are your sources? Also, it's very hard to guage intelligence like that, in my opinion (as in, it's hard to exactly call one animal overall more intelligent than another, since they all operate in extremely different ways). I'm very curious to know more. I knew crows were smart and possibly self-aware, but I hadn't heard any of the latest news concerning that. The latest I have heard was an article in Science Illustrated that demonstrated some reasoning/problem solving tests performed by crows, but that came out months ago, I think last year even. :)

The PIGEON. It's got to be one of the most underrated animals ever as well. Mostly people hate them for cluttering up cities and making racket, leaving messes on statues, that sort of thing. But pigeons are brilliant as all get out;

Pigeons are descended from Rock Doves, and they're some of the most intelligant birds in the world. They were used in times of war to carry messages back and forth. There are carrier pigeons, homing pigeons, racing pigeons, fancy pigeons, all different sorts. The Chinese black owl is actually a type of pigeon, as is the common Parakeet, and the Brown Pheasent.

The white doves released at weddings are nine times outta ten, actually just white pigeons. Fantail pigeons are also released at weddings very often. Some people even release pigeons at funerals.

Basically, the pigeon is a brilliant critter. The white ones usually aren't that great at racing, but they're guaranteed to come back no matter what if you release them. A good racing pigeon can go for $25,000, where as you can buy a pigeon to train for as little as $5.

It's epic ^;^
