Lol, it could be just that she is skilled in making herbs/potions. Also maybe she is extremely powerful and she just isn't trying very hard. It would also explain why solembum follows her around if she is a ex-rider/selena/soothsayer/random person that somehow has become very strong for no apparent reason.

The only thing that I really though that Angela could be was one of the grey Folk? Adapted with time and a race where she could fit in. I can't think of anything else she could be. And I was also pretty displeased that we didn't find out anything else about her. She is the main person I wanted to find out about in that book.

No no no!

Angela, as CP has so clearly pointed out, as well as Roran and Nasuada, never intended to be such major characters by the end of the series.

Now, if he never planned them to be some important character, why would Angela be a ex-rider? or a Grey Folk? That's a pretty huge role for not being a major character.

Not really. It doesn't have to mean that they would be a main character. But there isn't really anything else to explain her powers.

Post Re: Angela
its a "doctor who" thing. CP makes more then a few references in the book and acknowledges a big one in brisingr

Quote:
Also, for those who understand the reference to a "lonely god" when Eragon and Arya are sitting around a campfire, my only excuse in that the doctor can travel everywhere, even alternate realities. Hey im a fan too!

during inheritance Solembum says something to the affect of "ive seen rooms that are bigger on the inside then they are on the outside" a clear reference to the Tardis which all time lords have
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TARDIS

there are a few other instances where Angela is involved in references to the doctor but the other one i can think of off hand is near the end of the book (page 814 in the hardback). Angela is knitting a hat, eragon asks what it says and she replys ""Raxacori- oh never mind. it wouldn't mean anything to you"

Raxacoricofallapatorius is a planet in the doctor who series
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slitheen

so yeah thats what my head is telling me. a time lord

Lmbo!!! That occured to me to :) I was gonna ask him about it when I saw him in Southlake, but I had a hard enough time saying hi. I don't think she is though, but wouldn't it be hilarious if she was. :) Oh, and Solembum also mentioned "men who aged backwards", and something else. And each of the eleven Doctors have been younger than the one's before them...

That is just...wrong...entirely wrong. If CP /did/ throw in a Timelady, that's infringement. If he admitted to throwing in a Timelady, that's blatant infringement.

I mean, slightly subtle references, I get. But other than that? I thought Inheritance was supposed to be a serious story, not a joke of some sort...

Curf, don't get your feathers in a ruff.

I did read something about CP saying he's "almost convinced that Angela is a Timelady". But he was obviously joking, just like Marlow was. Obviously Angela can't be a Timelady.

Ai Valar...

I wasn't cross or anything. I was just saying.

Perfectly aware that Angela can't possibly be a real Timelady. I just think CP could've thrown in a lot less Doctor Who references. Once, yeah, alright. But twice, three times? And so obviously? Please. That's too much. Wasn't fussing at Marlow. Just musing in a slightly-irritated way about CP and his jokes. That's all.

I do find it odd that there was never really an explanation of Angela's powers in the books themselves. And if she was really never meant to be in the background, it's hard to tell why she wound up with so much power and overall mystery. That sort of thing is usually reserved for mains.

But I've been thinking, CP did say he'd be writing more stories eventually. What if he pulls a series about Angela out of his hat? He can clearly see she's become pretty popular among the fans, so what if he decides to roll with it and turn his star-never-meant-to-be into a full character, giving her a story of her own?

Post Re: Angela
I keep forgetting that y'all may not be reading the same stuff I am...

CP said somewhere that originally, Angela was a minor character (I think he also said she was only supposed to be in the first book, but don't quote me on that), but she turned into something way more fun, and he kept her around. He never fully revealed her powers, because if he had "then she wouldn't be nearly as interesting, would she?"

And I definitely remember reading somewhere (most likely among those questions he was answering on Random Buzzers) about Angela's backstory playing a major part in Book V. (No, it's not another book in the Inheritance Cycle, it's just another book in Alagaesia.)

Lol, and I guess being a Whovian myself, I'm of the "Meh, it's his book and he's a fan, let'im run with it" category. Besides, I laugh when I spot one. :)

Post Re: Angela
So, I've been reading articles all over the place, reread the books and spent a lot of time thinking all because of this very subject. I've come to a conclusion that I would like to share with you.
I warn that I will be repeating information already presented in earlier posts for the sake of presenting my ideas.

So, Angela first appeared in Tierm or however you spell the port city on part of Brom and Eragon's journey to visit Jeod. Here it is revealed she had met Selena, can predict the future, knows about Brom and has an unusual pet(kinda) in Solembum. Solembum is revealed to having a message for him and earlier in this topic it is suggested that the cats advice might be given because of knowledge of Angela(Assuming she is actually Selena), though I would like to point out that in the fourth book it is revealed the reason behind giving the information at this point is because of the hidden stash of eggs and hearts of hearts plan the Rider's concocted.

Beyond that, she appears at random times when important things are just about to happen. This is inclines me to believe she can predict the future in some way shape or form beyond the dragon knuckles. This idea is further supported by the spell she uses under the church in the fourth book to take down the large group in a flash. Afterword she states that line about time being energy or something. Can't remember specifics, but if you've read/own the book you might remember/be able to reference.

You also have to consider her knowledge of topics she should not have knowledge of. There are a couple instances where she shows knowledge of some secret or another that had only just become known to a small, select group who are either sworn to secrecy in the ancient language or are trustworthy to not warrent it. She has knowledge of the languages and customs or all the races. This is transparent from her ability to speak the languages, the respect she commands and her ability to do things others would not be able to get away with such as obtain the dwarf priest's weapon and incident with the king of the werecats.

The head priest being terrified of her secret identity and the statement of her supposed importance by Oromis go to show that she is someone who has made her mark on history, and I would push to say that her mark was made long ago. With her age being equivalent to being an "adult" in elven society goes to show she does not age considering appearance. She is referred to young in body and old of mind or something similar in the fourth book as well.

One additional point that has been missed is her large collection of powerful artifacts, from the dragon knuckles to the vast array of powerful weapons, she has obviously had time to build such an extensive collection.

The points I've mentioned, previously pointed out references and the mention of her not being elf, nor dwarf gives her the mysterious past that has captured the heart of many a fan. It also leads me to believe that she is the soothsayer referred to by Galbatorix in his 'hollowed ground'. Age, ability to see future, reputation, knowledge, the werecat and other facts I'm sure I've forgotten to mention all add up to her being someone truly important, whether the Author designed her to be so or not. To me, It all adds up to her being the soothsayer. In particular, her ability to know things points to this, though all the factors point to this as well.

Again this is my own opinion and I'm always open to suggestion.

I have nothing to suggest, since this is my own opinion as well. :) No doubt you thought a lot about it, and you pointed out a lot of things I noticed, as well as some I overlooked. (Mainly the large cache of unusual artifacts and weapons she has.)

Referring to a person, enigma means "A person of puzzling or contradictory character"

And not knowing the definition of a word doesn't make you sound uneducated. It just further underlines the fact that I spend way too much time reading. :)

Post Re: Angela
Alright to sum it up: Angela was taught by someone powerful and has a very high reputation under another name, she may or may not be the soothsayer, we know that Tenga was her teacher at some point [And Morzan possibly?] (but could he be the powerful one who taught her the spell that allowed her to kill an entire hallway of people?), she might also be a rider, she ate lots of herbs and that could be why she looks so young, one of the Grey Folk possibly, Time Lord?...., can predict the future, has a history with many races (or all of them) and at least has intimate knowledge of all of them, and has a large amount of rare artifacts.

Annnd that is it so far. I think I like my idea of her being of the Grey Folk like I mentioned earlier. That with some correlation to the soothsayer thing.

Well Galbatorix did say the Soothsayer wasn't an elf, dwarf, or human, so she could be both: Soothsayer and Grey Folk. Or maybe half-Grey Folk? Since it was said after they bound magic to the Ancient Language they kind of lost their power (not really, it just faded really bad) and started co-mingling with the younger races so as not to die out completely.

Her being half-Grey Folk would make more sense to me since she obviously doesn't seem to be faded in power or vitality.

If she is only half Grey Folk it makes me wonder what her other half is. It would have to be human unless CP decided to word it that she wasn't a full elf or dwarf. And if she is half it makes me wonder why there aren't more like her. Like would she be the only one (And I only say this because of course by half I think you mean the Grey Folk mated with another race) and if she's not where are the others and have they been in Alagaesia this entire time? Either way Angela was based on his sister right? She must be pretty astonished/ proud that a character made after her is so loved.

Anyways...

Yes, you are right in assuming I mean she's half Grey Folk and half of one of the younger races. I'm leaning towards human, since that's what she looks like. I'm sure there are others, but where they could be I have no idea. (Maybe Tenga is one?)

All I really want is for the next book to come out and learn more about her! I'm very interested in learning where Eragon went as well and what is really beyond the border of Alagaesia. Though from our knowledge of Angela alone it doesn't seem like it will be too exciting right now since she didn't go with them. Of course she probably has other reasons to stay as well.

We're assuming that she's going to be the main character though. What if she gets an apprentice and that's who the main character is?

I'm not sure if Eragon will be in these next books or not. I think CP will want to give that portion of the world to grow up a little more and get a bit better established before diving into it. (Of course, this is me also assuming that he doesn't do a major time skip.)
