Darryl
The latest addition to my army...
Name: Darryl
Age: 10
Gender: Male
Skills:
Fire: Darryl is completely immune to fire. He can cause himself to burst into fire at will, this takes very little of his energy. He has some problems controlling his fire, but he’s managed to refine to the point where he can turn the fire off as quickly as turn it on and can cause only his hands to catch on fire. He can also throw balls of fire, but this takes a lot more energy and concentration.
Martial arts: Being always chased by the empire, Darryl has been forced to learn some form of self-defense, and he’s never so much as touched a sword, but he taught himself to fight without. Darryl isn’t all that strong, but he’s very fast and agile-a lot more so than most ten-year-old human boys- and his blows almost always hit home. He’s good at interpreting his opponent’s body language and isn’t easily surprised. Brute strength doesn’t work well against him, as even the strongest blow will do no good if it doesn’t land its target.
Other combat abilities: Darryl has never used a sword before, but he probably could if he wanted to. He’s good at fighting, reacting to and interpreting his opponents actions, so for him, it would just be an issue of getting used to handling the sword. He’s never used a bow, either, and learning to use him would probably be a lot more difficult for him, as the technique is completely different from anything else he’s done.
Race: Unknown, looks human
Hair: Blond
Eyes: Brown
Home Village: Unknown
Parents: Unknown
Siblings: None
Character History: Darryl doesn’t have much memory of anything before he was seven, he doesn’t even remember his parent’s names. He grew up for the first six years of his life with his parents in their home just outside Du Weldenvarden, in the forest’s southwest corner. They had a small house in the forest with a little garden that his mother maintained. He never saw anyone except his parents, or if he did, he doesn’t remember it. He has some vague memories of that time, more impressions and emotions than real memories. He does have several memories of the lake that his parents often took him to, which he later learned was lake Isenatar.
When Darryl was almost seven years old, bandits attacked his home. It was a cold day in winter, and Darryl and his mother were inside taking care of a fox with a broken leg while Darryl’s father was outside cutting firewood.
Suddenly, Darryl’s father burst back into the house. He picked up Darryl, who was still holding the fox, and dropped him in a big crate, loosely throwing the lid over the top. “Bandits.” He said as he did this. “They’ll be here in moments.” Even as he spoke, they could hear the sound of the bandits crashing through the forest. To Darryl, he said, “Whatever happens, stay in that crate.”
The next few minutes were filled with the sound of screaming and breaking wood as the bandits forced their way into the house. Darryl and the fox huddled together in the crate, staring into the darkness.
After a few minutes, the screaming stopped and the bandits began taking everything apart, looting, looking for anything that might be of value. One of them uncovered Darryl. Seeing him, the man who seemed to be in charge walked over, grabbed Darryl, and lifted him out of the crate. Seeing what had happened, Darryl stared around in shock.
His home had been demolished, ripped apart almost beyond recognition. Nearly half the walls were gone, and everything not of value had been destroyed. And lying on the ground were the bodies of his parents, covered in blood.
Darryl panicked. He screamed-and, quite suddenly, he burst into flame, an inferno of fire ripping around him. The bandit holding him dropped him instantly, screaming as the flames blistered his skin. The bandits ran.
Almost as quickly as it had appeared, the fire was gone, but now the house was on fire, too. Darryl picked up the fox, who was still lying in the crate, and ran.
For several months, Darryl wandered aimlessly. He managed to survive off edible plants his parents had taught him about, but he was always hungry. The fox stuck with him, and after a while, he named her Leah. Sometimes Leah would bring him an animal she’d caught, and that helped with the food problem. Trying to understand what had happened with the fire, Darryl found that he could do it again, when he tried. The fire didn’t burn him, or his clothes.
After wandering for months, Darryl came to a city-Gil’ead. Never having seen any people other than his parents, he was very shy. Before he’d been in Gil’ead long, he accidentally set himself on fire. The soldiers tried to arrest him, and he barely managed to escape.
After that, he avoided people as much as possible, and any soldier who saw him tried to capture or kill him. For nearly two and a half more years, he and Leah traveled, avoiding the empire’s grasp.
Character Personality: Darryl is a very shy person. He dislike of other people is enhanced by the fact that the first people he saw after his parents were the people who destroyed his life, and currently, half the people he sees try either to capture or kill him. He always tries to avoid people, and has a repellent sort of aura that sometimes scares people. When he has to be around other people, he generally tries to avoid everyone else’s notice and rarely speaks unless spoken to.
Darryl doesn’t get along with other people, and even though she’s a fox, Leah is the only person he really connects with. To Leah, Darryl is one of her own pups. She always calms him down when he’s upset and he takes care of her when she gets hurt. The two of them take care of each other, and she’s the only one that Darryl trusts.
Darryl isn’t very trusting and never really gets close to people, and he has a way of making people scared almost as soon as they set eyes on him, but to those he likes, he’s really just a sweet ten-year-old boy, although more world-weary than most. When he gets really excited about something, he can even be a hyper, although he rarely gets that interested in anything. When someone close to him gets hurt, Darryl throws a fit, and whoever it was that hurt his friend generally leaves with a whole lot of burn scars.
Weapons: His fire, hands and feet
Likes: Leah, being left in peace, fire, quiet places
Dislikes: Being attacked, crowds, people in general
Weakness / Fear: Mostly, Darryl’s just afraid of people in general.
Animal Companions: Leah, his red fox. Leah is very protective of him, treating him like one of her own pups.
Character's Physical Description: Darryl is small, even for his age, barely topping four feet. His figure is very lithe and athletic. He has a slightly freckled face framed by shaggy, slightly wavy sandy blond hair hanging just past his ears and brown eyes that are never still. He skin is heavily tanned. He wears forest green pants and shirt, and a jacket with lots of pockets and made of very light cloth. He has tiny hands and feet that aren’t big enough for the rest of his body, and that, like his eyes, are always moving.
Dreams for the Future: To find out who his parents were
Reason for Dreams: He really knows nothing about them except a few vague memories, and he also hopes finding out more about his parents could help him find out where his fire abilities came from
Alignment/side: He fights for himself. He’s only vaguely aware of the empire/elves/varden/dwarves conflict.
