Hadarac, a desolat land where only the strong survived. A land that made, or broke you. Nathen had grown to love this land. It was wild.... free. This was his first time back to it in a year and a half. He traveled the lands of alagasia doing what work he could. A nameless hero of sorts that prefered the act of doing good needs more then the glory or fame in the songs of bards. But still the bards sung of him. Though as a mysterious hero that left as quickly as he came. Nathen had slain the man eating dragon Auroc that plauged the poor farmers near the hardrock cliffs. The mad elven witch Maria that for years had stolen children for use in sick experiments. Nathen faught the Empire, even the Varden at times when he saw them in the wrong.

Some called him a hero, others a villain. Some call him a mercenary, even more a monster hunter. Nathen was all these things, yet none. At the moment.... he was a bounty hunter. Riding on his horse Solomon Nathen entered through the stone archways of a settlement near the boarders of Hadarac. The people gathered as the man dismmounted his horse strode towards the elder of the settlement. "You return?" A old man with a beard as white as snow said and walked slowly towards Nathen with a narled ugly wooden cane. Nathen untied the bag secured to his hip rigging and presented it to the elder. "The head of Gall as promised. He and his cut throats wont be bothering you again.

The elder took the bag and looked inside to verify the claim. "Good, very good" The elder took a pouch from his hip and tossed it. Nathen caught the pouch and bounced it in his hand to test its weight. Satisfied Nathen secured the mony to his person. "I have a question old man" Nathen inquired. He described Jia and asked if he had seen a dragon with its discription. The elder stroked his beard in thought. "I'm sorry lad, but I cant say I have. With the kings slayers here I doubt any dragons linger

Without another word he mounted Solomon and left for the dirt highways that ran through the land. In memory of old times Nathen looked to the vast desert of Hadarac in the distance.

Jia watched her young charge from high above. She'd been watching him for a few days now, and was pleased with his mission. She chuckled lightly as she mentally overheard Nathen asking the old man if he'd seen her. She grinned at the man's response. Was he so wrong...There were hundreds of dragons walking the land. Or was a better description 'flying the skies'? She chuckled again and drifted down. Your fighting skills are exceptional, as usual, but you still need to work on opening up your mind. she said lightly in greeting. The gold-amethyst executed a back-loop corkscrew. Few people would have heard of or seen me, unless I want them to hear me or see me. she said, and to prove her point she dove out of the sky into Nathen's view, her flight still as silent as before. She back winged twice to slow her velocity, then simply floated a few yards above the sands, occasionally flapping to push her forward in the still desert air. Your tracking has improved, though. A strong point that a Rider must have if you have to hunt for yourself or are trying to evade enemies. she praised. She twisted her head around to smile at the young Rider. But as always, there is room for improvement. How is Elsa doing? she queried, asking after his partner-of-mind. Jia had more or less adopted the dark black hatchling as her own.

Nathen heard the voice of Jia in his head. Calm and soothing as always. He shielded his eyes from the sun and scanned the skys for his old mentor. Though he did not see her until Jia wished it done. Nathen waved and gave a smart remark as always. Though it held a tone of effection. "My mind? You would have more success with a rock."

He watched Jia fly and added knowing a dragons weakness for praise and flattery. "You still fly with grace and majesty that even the fallen dragon gods would hold you in jealously" The fallen dragon gods. His peoples history, his religion. Things he had learned and accepted in his travels.

"Elsa is sleeping and basking on a rock in the sun. She did not feel like playing hero today. Its been awhile Jia. How fares you? He could already hear Elsa's voice in his head. "Hero would not have charged the people coin" Nathen sighed. "Without coin I cant keep my armor strong or swords sharp. It is nessesary sometimes.

Elsa, true to her riders words was lying lazily on a rock outcropping. A hindleg hanging over the edge. She had grown over there travels. Now the average size of her kin she was as buetiful as she was deadly. Black as the darkest knight her kneck and end of her tail was covered in bony barbs. Elsa yawned and stood up to shake her head and neck. The bony barbs of the poison dragon clacking loudly against eachother.

Jia chuckled lightly and grinned. Nonsense. You simply need more practice in that field. Perhaps we will work on that tomorrow. she purred. Her scales fairly glowed at his praise, bristling primly with pride, but the words did not go to her head. She'd heard enough praise from the elves that it pleased her but did not cloud her judgment. Eka elrun ono (I thank you). I've been well. A skirmish or two, but nothing my Rider and myself cannot handle. she replied lightly, and felt a light twinge in the scar on her neck. She shook it off with a flick of her tail. The gold-amethyst extended her mind-probe out further until she brushed against another draconic consciousness. Greetings, my little nuanen súnda (beautiful shadow). she murmured to Elsa. She loved the young eitrum (poison) dragon like she would her own young one. She beat her wings a bit harder to gain more speed. I am glad to see you again, Elsa. she purred affectionately.

OOC:
How recent or far back is this thread set, or do you care? Like have a few months gone by, or is it a few weeks after they met? Just curious.

Nathen let a crooked smile cross his face at Jia. "I would like that sky queen. But I made the mistake of getting on the Vardens bad side, and I hear there are rebel agents nearby. As to why? Its pretty self explanatory" Nathen paused and stopped his horse before spreading his arms and saying in loud pride. "Its me were talking about! I'm a charmer like that. I know, its a special gift"

Elsa upon sensing Jia stood up on her hindlegs and with a few beats, took flight off the rock. Riding the air currents Elsa flew next to her friend. "I am happy to see you again. It brings warm feelings to my heart. I only wish you were with us on our journy. My rider is quite skilled at finding trouble, or perhaps it is the trouble that finds us. I can never be sure with Nathen.

Jia chuckled warmly, her teal eyes twinkling. Yes you are indeed the 'charmer'. Though you always seem to charm the wrong things. she retorted playfully, and laughed. Don't worry about them. The Varden know who I am, and they wouldn't dare attack you with me present. They know I'd gut them on the spot if they did. she said, her teal eyes hardening. She snorted, and her gaze turned affectionate as Elsa joined her in the sky. Your flying is much better now, little súnda. she noted, and smiled. And aren't all Rider's alike in that way? I swear I rescue Kale more often than he rescues me. she said with a playful roll of her eyes. As for traveling with you, I actually saw most of his recent mission. I've been following him for at least two and a half days now. she reported, looking back at Nathen slyly from the corner of her eye. She chuckled, pulling in her wings so she drifted a little lower to the ground.

OOC:
Okay. You say Elsa is a 'poison' dragon. What exactly is that, and what can she do? You've got me curious. :)

OOC: ^^. I have used the idea before on other sites. But poison dragons are pretty self explanatory. Whats special about Elsa is most of her upper neck, and patch of her tail near the end there are bony quills. Kind of like a porcupine. If another dragon lets say wants to attack Elsa. They cant just attack zeolously. But use tact. Elsa has a venomous bite. A nerotoxin to be specific that attack the bodys nervous system. End result without treatment, cardiac arrest, a.k.a. heart failure. Thats really the only special property she has.

IC: Nathen let out a hearty laugh. If you say so Jia. But the Varden want some information thats in my head. Information they will probably see as more important then you, or anyone else." He did not elaborate on what the information was. But Nathen would reveal the information when he felt the time was right. He always did.

Elsa let out a rumble that vibrated deep in her chest. A sound of pride at at the compliment Jia gave her. "Thank you, I have had plenty of time to get better. Though I wish Nathen would get rid of his horse already and ride me more often. Humans are strange in that respect, there attachment to horses is strange. That and dogs. Another relashionship humans have with animals I dont understand" Elsa banked right and turned to glide in low and land daintly on the sand next to Nathen.

The young rider stopped his horse and reached out a gloved hand to pat a part of Elsas neck that did not have the barbed bony spines. Nathen turned to Jia and spoke again. "Seeing as I have nothing else to do at the moment.... do you need help with the slayers running around here? I heard from the village elder they have been giving everyone in the area grief.

Sounds interesting. It suits Elsa, too. :D

IC:
Jia merely snorted at Nathen's comment, though she didn't respond. She doubted they would risk her anger to interrogate, i.e threaten, her student. And they apparently hadn't factored Elsa into their plans either. She grinned at the younger dragoness's words. It will make more sense it time, but twolegs typically need a companion to stay sane, be that a horse, a dog, a wife or husband, or, for Rider's, their partner-of-mind. And perhaps he would ride you more often if you had a saddle. We should try and get you one. Hard and sharp dragon scales are not exactly pleasant against soft human skin. she said, snorting once and smiling. She tilted her wings and followed Elsa to the sandy ground, watching with satisfaction as Nathen reached out from his position on Solomon's back to stroke a bare section of the midnight black females neck. The two had evidently grown closer since she'd last seen them. She folded her wings and alighted gracefully, using her flight momentum to let her pad forward to the pair without pause. She brushed Elsa's flank with her tail tip affectionately, then turned her teal-aquamarine gaze onto Nathen at his offer. She rolled her eyes. Please. Those slayers don't even know what their doing half the time. I've killed three in the last week, two of those being in the last four days. she said, and sighed. It wasn't fair to them to be honest. Dragons are so publicly 'extinct', slayers don't know the true ways to kill us anymore. It's almost pathetic. The only slayers that probably have a prayer are those trained by Galbatorix. she grimaced, her upper lip curling in dislike as she said the King's name. She sat on her haunches then, her gold-amethyst scales throwing specs of light all around her on the sand. I probably have a few Imperial slayers somewhere on my tail. I am wanted by the Empire after all. she said a bit sourly, then chuckled and grinned.

Nathen smiled on the inside at the memory of trying to fly Elsa without a saddle. He vividly remembered not being able to walk right for quite a period of time. Nathen listened to Jia speak of the slayers and shrugged. "You sound pretty sure of yourself, still, best not to get complacent and let down your guard. We humans can be pretty unpredictable and the slayers just might surprise you"

Elsa deciding to give Nathen some grief chimed in. "Speaking of wifes, Nathen had a temperary lapse of judgement a few months ago when he met a, how do I say, old friend" Nathen gave Elsa a look. "Dont test me woman" He said to Elsa with a tone to let her know she was walking on thin ice. Of course she paid Nathen no mind and continued.

"A empire army officer, a captain at that. When is it your planning to secretly wed? During the summer harvest festival under the hunters moon? In the wooden podium by the lake during the hours the fireflies are out? Sounds romantic, except for one little thing, you barely know her" Elsa's voice dripped with venom and her eyes narrowed. "I dont trust her"

Nathen clearly felt uncomfortable. "I have known her for a long time and we have been keeping in touch by letters. I, uh, will leave you to to catch up. If you need me I'm heading to the trade outpost and hit up the tavern for a few drinks.

With that he steered Solomon in the direction of the trade outpost.

Jia snorted softly and grinned. Your the one telling me that. I'm the Bonded dragon that has to figure out what the heck my Rider is doing because he's blocked me from his mind. she said, and snorted again. She listened to Elsa explain Nathen's adventures, or at least one of them, and had to shake her head. She sighed as the young Rider hastily withdrew, his uncomfortable emotions almost tangible. I hope you've been advising him to leave her behind. Love unrequited is the most horrible of wounds; because it injures the heart and festers. There is rarely ever a full cure. she murmured to the black-poison-dragoness. She looked after Nathen, her eyes squinting a bit. It had been quite a while since she'd seen a human town. I think I'll follow him to the tavern. Pubs always seem to bring trouble, and if Nathen is anything like Ka, the trouble will find him. she said, then fluttered forward after Solomon with a few small strokes of her wings. She touched the Changing Seal as she moved, so that when she was finally beside the horse, she was in her twoleg form. Her deep gold waist length hair was pulled away from her face in a thick braid down her back. Her clothes, which was her usual close fitted gold silk tunic and light blue ankle length circle skirt, was covered by a deep royal purple cloak with light gold trim. As they neared the trading post, she raised the hood of her cloak to hide her face. Her teal eyes flicked up to Nathen's, and a small smile pulled at her barely visible lips. It's been a while since I was in a twoleg place. she said in explanation, then looked ahead.

Elsa sighed. "I have tried but he suffers dillusions that when the war is over he can settle down and start a family and buy land for a farm. I find it hard picturing Nathen holding a pitchfork rather then a sword. Its not so much that I dont trust captain Esenya like I told Nathen. She seems the good sort, and fully aware of what Nathen is. Content to flee the empire and live the simple life as a house wife". Elsa snorted. "Such things though only happen in fairy tales." She quoted Nathen that said it alot. " You would think Nathen would take his own advice and accept his fate. He will never know peace. He can take care of himself well enough. Being close to others I fear, will only make him weak and vulnurable for manipulation" With her thoughts out in the open about the whole situation Elsa departed back to rock outcropping to continue her nap.

When Jia changed Nathen was not surprised in itself by the feat of magic. He had seen her do it before. What he never liked was having to be in the presence of her buety, as if a goddess decended from the celestial heavens to walk among mortals. As they neared the trade outpost Nathen took note of the mercenary guards hired by the trademens guild for protection. Nessesary to protect the small colony from raiders. "Just remember Jia that you dont look so intimidating at the moment and the men folk at these remote places are quite lonly with want for the flesh. Stay close ok?"

Nathen stopped at the gate and talked to the guards from the back of his horse. "Any raider attacks since last I came?" The guard chewwing on tobbaco leaves spit out a black stream and crossed his forearm across his lip. "Nah, been quite. Did you take care of the rouges sellsword? Wait, thats a stupid question. Of course you did." The mercenary guard looked to Jia with wanting eyes. "And who is this fine lass.

Nathen casually rested a palm on the hilt of his sword at his hip while still holding the reigns of his horse with the other. "My sister, I just learned she was in the area." It was not a bad lie. Nathens hair, like hers. Was goldish blond like a wheat field before harvest. "Alright then" The guard waved a hand letting the two pass. Nathen directed his horse to the largest building on the small settlement and hitched Solomon up to the wood post with the other horses. "I take it you dont want to drink a couple of wheat beers with me?" Nathen asked her. "How about a dark dwarven lager? There pretty good?" He gave a chuckle. "Of course you dont. By now I imagine your probably wondering" He paused to make sure no one was in earshot. "Why we humans even like drinking."

Without waiting he entered through the swinging wooden doors of the tavern. Jia was a big girl he figured. She would do what she wanted. Be that to follow him inside or go look around.

Post Re: The Sellsword (open)
Jia smiled as she listened to Elsa. For Nathen, her words might be true, and he might fare better on his own, with only one being close to him (that person being Elsa, of course). She herself, however, was the opposite of the young Rider. The gold-amethyst treasured her loved ones and family, knowing that if she failed in a mission or faltered in battle that they would be there to support and help her back onto her feet. She depended heavily on them, and because of that they were also a weakness for her. She shook such thoughts away in time to hear Nathen's cautioning words. She had to chuckle at the irony. She didn't respond to him, only meekly followed beside Solomon. Her breathing caught in her throat at the guards waning gaze. She flushed and dipped her head as they were waved inside and the young Rider found a hitching post for his horse. She grinned at him, making a face when he mentioned beer,"Ugh, no thank you." she said, and shuddered. "I've tasted beer before." she glanced around, like him, to make sure no one was in easy hearing distance,"Didn't do much for me. I'll just have a mead." she followed after him into the tavern.

Jia paused at the door and removed her cloak. She did this for two reasons, one; it was hot, two; to flash the sword and dagger hanging on her hip from a belt. The tavern got a bit quiet at her entrance; nearly every male was eying her her, whether married or single it matter not. She turned her back and hung her cloak on a hook by the door. When she'd finished and was heading for the bar to order her drink, she met every pair of eyes in the pub. Her teal eyes were deep and enigmatic, though also a subtle threat if she wanted them to be. She could slice a man to bits with her gaze alone. By the time she'd reached the bar, all the men had suddenly found something much more interesting to claim their attention. Those that didn't were either stupid or too drunk to care.

She glanced at Nathen from the corner of her eye as the young bartender took her order while struggling not to meet her gaze. What was that you said about not being intimidating? she asked him mentally, a slight grin pulling at her lips. Her teal eyes glittered, but with warmth this time instead of a threat. I've done this before, little one. And not only that, I am a dragon, regardless of what form I'm in. she said, and this time the grin won out. Her lips pulled back into an affectionate smile. Her white teeth flashed in the dim light, nearly luminous on their own. She turned back to the bartender, the smile still across her face. He stuttered out a few words, then left. She daintily picked up her mug and took a sip of mead.

Nathen raised an eyebrow as Jia took a seat by his side at the counter. "I stand corrected" He said as he brushed her mind with his. He was not as confused and dark as he once was. His mind now held a presence of reasurring strength.

"You remind me to often of what you are my sky queen. Do you think my eyes blind?" His tone was not hostile, but amused. "Be proud of your great blood line, for you are decended from the fallen dragon gods. Just dont be to eager to remind us lowly humans if someone steps on your feet. I dont want my drinking interuppted by you changing back and ripping people up. Bloody beer makes for a bad buzz"

Nathen waved the barkeeper over and got a pint of wheat beer. After a few more and he felt happy and content. Nathen started to nurse the beer he had. Sipping occasionally as to not get drunk. That effect lost its fun for him years ago. "So tell me Jia, how did you come to possess the trinket with wich you have" He paused to drink and continued. "Are you human in only body? Or do you feel as we do? Do you have what some would call, humanity? I lost my humanity long ago and forgot what it feels like. I was young when the soldiers took me. Only a child" Nathen drank some more. "The orphans brigade is where they sent me. To be one of the kings infamous child soldiers. Clashing swords, screams of the dying and wounded, they were my lullabys as a child. I did horrible things Jia when I was a soldier" Nathens thoughts drifted to memories past.

"Burning villages, mass graves. hphf, I even took any woman I fancied as spoils of war. Not a day goes by I regret it all. Even though I do good now I know where I am going to go when I die" Nathen took another long drink and put the mug down. "The all consuming darkness, where all the monsters go. I will suffer as I made others suffer." Nathen waved off the barkeeper as he offered another pint of beer. The effects of the drink opened Nathen up. He spoke of his past. Something he never did before with Jia. It had always been a sensitive topic.

"Thank you" He finally said after a long pause. "Thank you for seeing the good in me. But I am just a monster. I came to accept that. A monster. There will be no redemptoin.

Jia merely grinned at his lightly scolding words and continued to sip at her mead. She stilled a bit and glanced at him from the corner of her eye in astonishment. He rarely ever spoke of his past. She waited patiently for him to finish, her anger at Galbatorix only becoming sharper as it unraveled. She'd always known his story was dark, but now she truly understood. She took a deep breath through her nose before letting it out slowly. Every twoleg has humanity. Or at least, most do. she said quietly without looking up. I feel as you do. Dragons are not emotionless as the stories say. You should know that by being bonded with Elsa. Humanity, however, is different. It is about love and caring for others. Regretting your past actions with true remorse. I care about a lot of people, Nathen. My Rider, you, Elsa, my brother, my Nieces and Nephews, my Mother, my Father, my Grandfather...I love and care for my entire family, as well as dozens of others besides. she murmured softly. I've killed hundreds, as you have. Listen heavily upon these words, Nathen. You are not a monster. You have not lost your humanity, not at all. You love Elsa, no matter how much you try to hide it, I know you do, and you care about me. You regret your actions as a soldier. she paused, and now she looked up. Her teal eyes were unfathomably deep in their sorrow.

I've gone a step further down than you, little one. I've killed, yes. You've killed, yes. But have you ever purposefully tortured someone to death? I have, several times, simply to protect Kale and for no other reason than I hated them. And I do not regret my doing so. I would do it again right now in a heartbeat to one of the men in this pub if they were threatening my Rider. she whispered. She looked down back to her mug where she was tracing the lip with her fingertip. It was her fourth mead and, like Nathen, the tongue-loosening liquid was working its wiles on her as well. I am the monster in this scenario. It was never you. There was no 'good' that I had to see in you. Elsa knew that, otherwise she wouldn't have hatched for you, we wouldn't be here right now, and you might have been recaptured by the Empire and forced to swear allegiance to the King. Elsa saved you from that without knowing it, which means your either worth saving...or your destiny was to always become a Dragon Rider, and your time as a Soldier was simply to prepare you for Training.

Post Re: The Sellsword (open)
Though Nathen at the moment found it hard to keep his focus he listened to Jias words. He was genually surprised. Of all the people. He least expected her to be one for torture. "Yup, I guess you got me there Jia. I have tortured. But it was because of orders. Not because I liked it" He left it at that. He gave a small chuckle after a moment though as he drained another mug and smacked his lips savoring the strong taste of yeast.

"Well arnt we a lovy dovy couple. Revealing our dark pasts. Why we should hold hands and start singing songs while we are at it. Maybe have a couple of drinks and see if it leads us into the bed of a inn" He joked and winked at Jia. Nathen often used jokes to elevate depressing situations. This was his unspoken way of saying he was done talking about it.

Nathen left some coin on the counter for Jia and his drinks and stood up off the chair. "Well, I think I'm good and buzzed right now. Time to saddle up and hit the dusty road. Ready to go or do you want to look around some more? Perhaps the merchant stands? They may have some intresting things" Nathen had more then enough coin from the bounty he did. He figured he could afford to buy her something.

Jia chuckled darkly. I didn't say I enjoyed it, only that I have no regrets in doing it. she said, then smiled at his joke. She let it go, knowing he was finished. She drank down the rest of her mead and stood after Nathen. She pursed her lips, thinking about if she would like to stay and look at the merchant shops. It was while she was doing this that one of the drunk men finally got up the nerve to approach her. His step was swaggering. He was so visibly drunk she almost felt sorry for him. He was going to have a helluva hangover tomorrow. He was around his early twenties, with deep blue eyes that would have been handsome were they not glazed from his drinking. His shaggy brown hair touched his shoulders and refused to stay out of his eyes. His expression was respectfully wary as he came closer, but the wanting look in his eyes won out on wariness.
"Well, 'ello little dove." he rumbled. She grimaced, though he took it as a look of interest,"Why don't'cha come wit me an' warm me up fir the nigh'?" he asked boldly, taking a step closer. She took a step back.
"I would, perhaps, but I have somewhere else to be." she said politely, shifting so her sword and dagger was visible. Either he was blind or just too drunk to care.
"Come now lit'le dove-" he persisted, taking two steps toward her. His hands were reaching for her waist. That's as far as he got. She grabbed them and yanked them to the sides. She kicked him where it hurts, then when he was doubled over in pain, she clipped his jaw hard with the heel of her foot. In the next moment, her dagger was pressed to his bared throat, just above his jugular. It nicked the skin, and he swallowed reflexively.
"I am not the meek object to control at your whim." she said icily, her teal eyes nearly glowing like a coal with her anger. "Find some other place to satisfy your desires." she snarled, then deliberately sheathed her dagger. She glared at him for another moment, then shoved him into a table.

She marched stiffly to the door, grabbing her cloak on the way out, and left Nathen to try and catch up. She swung the cloak around her and lifted the hood over her head as she stalked out into the desert, gradually calming down in the pleasant warm-cool-air of the coming desert night. When she was at least a hundred some yards away from the trading post, she sighed, then stopped and turned to wait for Nathen and Solomon.

Nathen was caught wholly off guard by Jia. He just expected her to behave like any woman would. Slap the man and be done with it. But she was not just any woman. "Jia wait" He called out as she quickly left. Nathen started to follow but the man she threw into a table had caused the occupants to spill there beers. The outcome was no pleasent. Before he knew it Nathen was involved in a full out bar brawl.

Nathen ducked a wild swing from a patron and uppercutted the man in the jaw sending him flying backwards onto a table and breaking it. Two came out of nowhere and took hold of his arms as another came in to start punching Nathen in the gut and a few to the face. Nathen kicked the man back with a foot to give him some space. The attacker came again and caught a foot in the face for his troubles. Nathen ripped a arm free from his holder and threw back a elbow cracking the other one holding his arm in the jaw.

Nathen flinched as a body came flying over the railing of the second floor and hit the wooden floor with a loud thud. "I am so tired of this" Nathen moaned as he held a hand to his gut. He was now more vexed then a desert rattler. Letting out a battlecry he ran, stepped on a chair, then a table, and dove into the big crowd of brawlers tackling the biggest giant of a man one would have ever seen.

It was some time later before he came back and joined Jia. A visible black eye on his face even in the moonlight. "Typical woman" Nathen said with a crooked smile. His voice tone indicating he was not sure wether to laugh or be angry. "You throw latern oil on the fire and leave me to clean up the mess. I expect something to answer for this black eye of mine" He pointed a gloved hand to the injury and got off the horse in pain. "Bloody tavern wench kicked me between the legs before I left" He said and leaned on Solomon for support.

"Seriously, why do you all do that? It really hurts you know"

Post Re: The Sellsword (open)
Jia was laying back on the sand with the cloak fanned around her. Her eyes were closed, but when she heard hoof beats, she lifted herself up onto her elbows and squinted. She hated her twoleg night vision; it was so fuzzy and shadowed. She pursed her lips, but upon hearing the almost teasing tone in his voice, she smiled apologetically,"I've never had much of a temper, but when men approach me in human form...Well, let's just say I feel like a wild female dragon and leave it at that." she said, then got up and walked toward him. She got under his arm and supported him from that side. Her smile was sheepish now,"Sorry." she said. She helped him stand up straight, taking most of his weight over her shoulders. She gently pulled him away from Solomon, soothing the horse in the Ancient Language while she lowered Nathen to the ground. She tilted his head back to look at his black eye. She touched the swollen skin gingerly, wincing in sympathy,"You can heal that. It will take some effort because of the extent of damage, but I can give you my energy." she said lightly, still supporting him with one arm.

Nathens pride was a bit hurt at having a woman, dragon in human body or not, help support him. Nathen sat there and let his friend inspect the injury. "You know, I could, but...." Nathen said in his sly voice. "I said somone has to answer for this black eye." He gave a chuckle. "What? You expect me to make this easy for you? I am afraid not my femme fatale. You have demonstrated you are capable of taking care of yourself. But can you take care of another?" Nathen was enjoying this far to much.

Jia pursed her lips and shook her head, a grin quirking at the edge of her mouth,"You underestimate me, little one. I've had to care for my Rider more times than I would like to remember." she said. She wrapped an arm around his shoulders and pulled at him until he was laying down on his back. She turned away from him to dig a hole for a pit. She touched her River of Fire Seal, and spat a small globule of writhing flame into the pit. She reached into her cloak and pulled out some celandine, stinging nettle seeds, raspberry leaves, and marigold,"Close your eye." she ordered quietly, then leaned over his face and began gently putting the herbs into place. She put one raspberry leaf in his hand while she put the other over his eye,"Eat that. It will help with the pain." she explained quickly. It was a few minutes later when she was finished and leaned back. His eye looked like it was covered with a leafy eye-patch. She smiled at him, her teal eyes glittering,"Any other injuries that need attention?" she asked.

Nathen watched Jia as she prepaired the medicine. He did all that was instructed and sat up when everything was done. "Great, now people can call me leaf eye nate, or leaf eye drake. Wich do you think is more catchy?" Nathen asked Jia with amusment. As she asked if he needed any help with other injurys. Nathen had an idea.

Elsa's voice crept into Nates mind. "I see a disturbing picture has crossed that thing you call a brain. Be mindful of your thoughts Nathen, we share minds remember?" Elsa landed and leaned over to inspect her rider. "Getting into fights again I see, good thing Jia went to keep you out of trouble." Nathens jaw dropped. "Seriously?" Nathen waved a hand in defeat. "What can I say, its me"

He felt it easier just to let Elsa believe what she thought rather then to explain.

Jia chuckled,"Leaf-eye Nate, definitely." she said, and laughed. She rose an eyebrow as his expression changed, and she recognized the look as one that meant he was speaking to Elsa. And to prove her point, the black-poison-dragoness landed not a minute later. The eyebrow that she'd raised climbed higher when Nathen spoke aloud. She pursed her lips and sat back on her heels, tilting her head curiously,"May I know what the inside joke is?" she asked, her teal eyes glittering.

Nathen propped himself up on an elbow and looked to Jia. "Nothing. Elsa is right. Good thing you came along to keep me out of trouble. I just could not help myself you know Elsa. The first thing I did was pick a fight with the biggest guy in there. To assert my dominance and status as alpha."
Elsa sighed and lied down. Crossing one forearm across the other. "Next time dont Nate. Rashness is unbecoming" Elsa in the typical dragon manner took everything seriously and did not recognize the tones of sarcasm in Nathens voice. Or so Nate thought. "Sarcasm, is also unbecoming" The poison black added shortly after.

"Clever girl" Nathen said with a smirk. "You have gone ahead and learned to pick up emotion in human voice tones. Well done"

Jia's eyes twinkled with curiosity, but she didn't push the matter. She sat with her legs pulled up to her chest and her arms wrapped around her knees, staring into the flame. She looked up at Nathen as he praised Elsa for picking out the tone in his voice. She tilted her head at the black-poison-dragoness,"He's right. I've been bonded with Ka for almost a year now, and I still can not understand him sometimes." she said, and shrugged lightly. She leaned back and laid on the sand, studying the stars. She sighed sadly. She missed her Rider. She laced her fingers behind her head,"Tomorrow...What to do..." she mused, and pursed her lips,"We can work on expanding your mind, Nathen, and perhaps you can show me your defensive forms, Elsa." she said idly.

As everyone stopped talking, letting the peace and quiet of the desert night take over Nathen took out his casual small wooden pipe. After prepping it with tobbaco leaves from a small pouch Nathen lit it with a word of power and puffed contently. He stared off into distance as if lost in thought. But Nathen was far from thoughtful. He was in casual meditation. Feeling everything around him. From the smallest hopper mouse to the flying screech owl. Nathen felt a disturbance in the magic all around him. As if someone had dropped a rock into a still pond sending out ripples.

Nathen did not respond to Jia. Continueing to stare off, puffing his pipe. It was only when Elsa called him name did Nathen stir. "Sorry, what was the question?" He asked Elsa. "Jia wants you to practice expanding your mind tommorow." Nathen sighed and resumed staring off. "We will see what the new day brings

The young man shifted and tossed a dried up tumbleweed into the fire pit Jia made and watched as it burned. The hot air casting up embers into the night sky. "The kings eye is almost upon me I think." Nathen finally spoke. "A scrying spell perhaps.... or maybe something else. In any case I think it best we leave Hadarac at first light Elsa" Nathen looked to Jia. "Will you be coming as well sky queen?

Jia's eyes had closed while she waited for Nathen to answer. When he did, she didn't respond. She exhaled when he spoke of leaving and asked if she would be accompanying them. She opened her eyes to stare at the night sky for a few moments, contemplating. Finally she nodded,"Yes, I believe I will. But not for long. I still need to gather more...So few have agreed to help." she murmured, and closed her eyes again. She thought of Cy Ara, her female Allatik friend, and Cy Ara's deceased Guardian, Siberia. The rage ignited in her chest, and she had to swallow hard to keep the angry tears at bay. She sat up and gazed into the fire. Only about another two weeks were left before she would meet up with Ka at the docks in the Spine. She sighed and rested her jaw on her knee. Her eyes closed, but she couldn't keep a single tear from leaking out of the corner of her eye and slowly dripping down her cheek, like a trickle of pure diamond.

Nathen turned his gaze from the fire to the stars. The spirit trail his people called it. Where all his dead ancestors dwelled. He looked as if they would give guidance to what he was wondering. But none came. "I am sorry to hear so few have agreed to help" Nathen said with honest regret.

There was a moment of silence and then Nathen perked up. "A fire, friends together, a nice night. Sounds like the perfect time for stories. I will tell one, and then you can Jia. Dragon legends and myths facinate me"And so Nathen started a tale. "At some point or another, no matter where you are. You are bound to stumble upon a cirlce of ancient weathered stones. Scholars have pondered over them for centurys. Leaving many to wonder. Who put them there, and why?"

"Long ago there was a race of men that came with the others. The Dashi. They were different though" He paused for dramatic effect. "With the power to summon storms, and there awsome power. All without speaking a single word. The Dashi were devout dragon worshippers. Dragon kinds protectors, eyes, and ears in the world of men. The Dashi believed that in the beginning mankind was shaped by sand and made by the devine fires of dragons."

When a young rider came into power. The same wretched king that sits on the throne now. It was the Dashi that stood between him and there dragon masters. The Dashi were a small clan and in the end could not hold back the tide. In there darkest hour most of the Dashi's dragon masters fled through magic stone circles. Fleeing this world back to the heavens. They had abandoned there human servants. They say every Dashi died during the kings bloody genocide. And that the bones of there entire race rests in the pit of Bartonalas. The very pit the slayers cast the bones of dragons into. Others say that some Dashi lived and to this very day. Still protect the decendents of there dragon masters that failed to flee the darkness that swept over the land"
Nathen gestured a hand for Jia to tell a tale.

Post Re: The Sellsword (open)
Jia listened quietly, her mood gradually lifting with the story. Even with its dark ending, her spirits were a bit higher than before. She took a deep breath and opened her eyes just as Nathen motioned toward her. Her voice was soft when she began, but slowly grew stronger.

"Long ago, many hundreds of thousands of years, we were not so even-temper. Not so..mixed." she said. She leaned back on her palms as she stared into the fire,"Dragons were once divided into separate Clans. White, black, red, blue, and perhaps some others, but I only know of the ones I've been taught. The Black's were a Clan of warriors, who fought for everything, even in their own territory. Their greatest enemy was the White's, who they thought were viscous animals and didn't deserve a shred of mercy. As is known to be assumed, the White's thought the same as the Black's did. Until one day, while in a great battle for survival, an aged Black came across a gravely injured White, trying to drag herself back into her own territory. The Black's name was Zefanrac, the previous leader of the Clan. He took pity on the White female. What right was it of his to kill something that only wanted to get away, to return to its home? Zefanrac took her under his care, finding that her name was Phealis. As he nursed her back to health, a strange spark began to ignite between them." here she paused to take a breath, then she continued.

"Zefanrac and Phealis had an understanding, and they both agreed that if their Clans continued to destroy each other, eventually they would drive the other to extinction. So they planned to make a treaty. They moved their 'nursing' place to his cave in the Black's territory and he continued to care for her under the leader's watch. When Phealis was well enough, Zefanrac escorted her back to her territory. The meeting between leaders was arranged. But things went wrong. The White leader didn't want peace; he'd been too badly hurt by the Black's to forgive them easily. Zefanrac was prepared to protect his leader...Phealis was fatally wounded when she moved to protect him. As the White's attempted to approach the injured dragoness, Zefanrac warned them back with the exclamation that he would have died for her because he loved her."

She paused again and finally looked up at Nathen. She smiled, but it was a shadow,"From there, the summary is simple. Phealis was healed. She and Zefanrac became mates and had a hatchling. His name was Aeraldi. He still lives to this day. That was the beginning of the Joining. The last Clans to Join were the Red and Blue. The first egg laid from that Union was my Grandfather, Zephorion." she said, then looked back down to the fire with a contemplating expression in her eyes. She loved the Histories of her Race, and especially when it included any information about her breed, the Truth Seekers and Soul Readers.

Nathen was pleased as Jia started to tell her story. Not only because Dragon tales facinated him. But because it stopped her crying. He had previously pretended he did not see the single tear that ran down her cheek. Had she kept crying. Nathen feared he would have lost his tough exterior and softened to a point of weakness. Enbraced her in a hug, a kiss on the cheek of reasurance. Things Nathen deemed as socially.... unaceptable.

He listened to the tale with keen intrest. At its end nathen crossed his arms. "Buetiful. More cheerful then mine." Nathen continued to puff at his pipe and looked back up to the stars in the night sky. Still looking for an answer from his ancestors. Still they remained silent. Nathen then made up his mind on his thoughts prior to the story telling. "If you would wish it, I offer you my sword and service in place of those who have not agreed to help" Nathen had no idea what Jia needed help with. But Nathen figured he was honor bound to help Jia. Not only because she was a close friend. But because he was bound by the blood in his veins to serve her. Like his ancestors served the dragons before him.

"I will have to send a letter to Esenya postponing our wedding" He shrugged. "But she will understand, This is who I am, what I do" Nathen patted the bottom of his pipe with a finger emptying the burned contents within. "I am but a humble sellsword. I normally charge people for my.... uniqe services. But to settle old debts with you. I will help you free of charge" Nathen felt content he kept up the illusion of his nuetrality.

"Still pretending not to care?" Elsa's voice echoed in his mind. He did not even reply to Elsa's secret question. He now just waited for Jia's response for his estended hand of help. All she had to do was accept it, or turn him away. In the event the latter happened. Nathen would insist his help. Wether Jia liked it or not. He only hoped it would not come to that. He would rather Jia believe that his story was just that. A story lacking fact.

Jia closed her eyes and smiled bitterly. Somehow she knew he'd offer to join the cause. She bit her lip and opened her eyes to stare into the fire. After a minute of silence she finally looked up directly at Nathen,"You offer before you know the full implications." she said quietly, barely moving her lips. She pressed her lips together, her eyes turning glassy from tears,"I will not be the one to send you to the Void. Your training is still rudimentary, and I fear that very fact could get you or Elsa killed were you to help me. Do not think that I belittle you, I know how gifted you are with swordsmanship. But I also know the strength of the enemy that we face." she murmured. She blinked rapidly to keep the tears back,"I can tell you, if you want, and then you can decide for yourself. But I still say no." her voice was a bit firmer at the last bit,"Debt or no debt, I am your mentor and I say its too dangerous for you."

Nathen took Jia's bitter words in. Though she said she ment no offence Nathen still suffered a little to his pride. "You were my mentor. But I broke away from you. I do what I want, when I want. Without care of thought to what others think. Deal with it. I am stuck with you. My blood demands that I serve and protect dragons, as my ancestors before me."

I did not slay a man eating dragon that shamed its race, or escape a ambush by the vanguard of the kings third army to have my skills insulted." Nathen sighed. "But I will humor you. Tell me of the perils the road you travel has. Then I can tell you if I have anthing to offer" Nathen was sure he could offer something. Even if it was just a support role to assist the party of heros. Big or small.

Post Re: The Sellsword (open)
Jia had to smile. She knew he would have responded like that. But the smile didn't last long. She stared into the fire again before beginning,"A man named Lukia Ursl has declared that he will more or less enslave dragonkind. And he very well could if he so wished. He created a type of collar that, when worn by a dragon, will compel he or she to obey him. He is a race of being called an Allatik. Allatiks are closely bonded to the earth. At birth they are gifted control of one element, on some occasions there was an Allatik gifted with two. Later, usually when an Allatik is still young, they find or are found by a specific animal that is assigned to the as a Guardian. But they are much more than that. A Guardian becomes a physical part of the Allatik, somewhat like your bond with Elsa and mine with Ka, but deeper." he expression darkened,"I have two Allatik friends. Tyleek Cree, a male, and Cy Ara, a female. Tyleek's Guardian is a Golden Eagle, named Theldor. Cy Ara's was an arctic wolf, named Siberia. Lukia killed Siberia to break Cy Ara's spirit. He did that. But he's waging war on his own kind now. Galbatorix is funding him, if you could believe it." she spat angrily. She clenched her hands into fists,"This will be a dangerous war. One that will decide the fate of Allatiks and of my race. Me, Ka, Tyleek, and Cy Ara are going around to gather as much help as we can. Most of my family has enlisted themselves, including my own daughter, no matter how much I try to hold her back." she grimaced. Then she looked up, and her teal eyes were intense,"This will be a real war, Nathen. Not the ragtag missions, fights, and skirmishes you and I have done. Full out war." she said fervently, then shuddered convulsively,"You didn't meet Lukia, either. His power is frightening to behold." she murmured. Finally she looked down,"I just don't want to be responsible for your death, which is very highly possible at this point. We were ordered to meet in a months time at the Ports of the Spine, where we'd enlist a ship and sail to the homeland of the Allatiks. That was two and a half some weeks ago, I think." she said quietly.

Nathen took in all that Jia said. He sighed. But looked at the whole situation in a proffesional manner. He use to be a soldier after all. "OK then, me going would only endanger the mission and everyone else. But dont think I wont leave you without aid. You say the king is providing supplys to this Lukia?" Nathen got up and dug out a map from one of the many saddle bags that his horse had and came back to kneel next to Jia. "Then I will deal a blow to cripple him. I have been keeping track of all the supply routes the king has. Human greed can be a great ally. I am a sellsword and know how the other mercs think. I can pretty much hire my own small private army from the mercenary guild. With promise of riches and spoils from the supply convoys we hit." Nathen rolled up the map after pointing to all the supply routes the empire used. "I will hit them hard and fast and flee back into the wilds after securing the supplys of gold, weapons, whatever, as payment to my soldiers. If any cargo ships try to cross the great water Elsa will make short work of them"

I will cut off the empires supply lines to Lukia. This will leave him isolated and alone. No military force can survive long without a supply line. With any luck this maniac will feel the hurt of what I'm doing and send his own soldiers here to take care of me. Again lessening his strength so you and your comrades can get closer to him. I wish I could go with you. But from what I have heard from you. I will be of more aid here in Alagasia." Nathen clapped his hands and sat back down. "What do you think of my plan? Any faults from your viewpoint? Aside from me pretty much coming out into the open and drawing all eyes on me?

Jia listened carefully to Nathen's plan, looking it over in her head for any faults. She didn't find any, except for the one that he'd pointed out. She smiled at the Rider,"Perhaps even that one catch can be reversed." she said, her teal eyes abruptly glittering with mischief. She chuckled,"Have you ever wondered how, specifically, I can Change from dragon to human, and back again?" she asked with a wide grin. To so Nathen in dragon form would be entertaining, and the same for Elsa. Their roles would be reversed. And no one would ever know who they were.

"How?" Nathen asked on the catch being reversed. Seeing the look in his eyes Nathen said quiet nervously. "I dont like that look in your eyes. I can already tell this is going to be somehing I wont like"

"You know I have wondered but just excepted it as how things were" A look of realization crossed his face. "no no no" Nathen held up his hands. I dont want no magic changing me! As one of the holy sky queens even you must accept the idea as madness! Blasphemy! You mess with the very fabric of creation! Magic is not a toy! A thing to play with and turn me into a twisted paverstion of magic and nature!"

Nathen thought Jia had some plan to weave a complicated ancient spell that might mess up resulting in his death, or worse.

Jia scowled at Nathen's reaction, rolling her eyes. She leaned forward and smacked his arm lightly,"Cale down, Nate. I'm not going to turn you into a frog." she said chidingly. She held her hand out and closed her eyes to concentrate. A few moments later a strange Seal appeared, hovering a few inches above her palm. It was reddish grey in the middle, fading to orange and fiery red at the edge. It had five rings within each other, with small Rune-like figures scrawled around each separate ring. She opened her eyes and smiled lightly,"This is what allows me to Change. I've mentioned Seals before, haven't I? Seals is the specific kind of magic that my Rider can control. This Seal is called a Void Seal; Changing Seal, I believe. When a Changing Seal is set into a person, they can then Change to whatever they want, whenever they want. And unless is it removed, like how I just removed mine, it will always be with you, so you will never be stuck in a form." she reassured. She closed her eyes again and pulled the Seal back in. It dissolved into the air and soaked into the skin of her palm, becoming part of her again. Her eyes opened,"Seals a natural kind of magic, just like the Ancient Language. It won't hurt you. You don't even have to have a knowledge of Seals to carry a Changing Seal. I could make one now for you and Elsa, then you could use it whenever you like. Concentration and energy drain is minimal, depending on how often you Change, just like regular magic."

Nathen was mesmorized by the seal hovering over Jias hand. He slowly reached out a hand to touch it right before it disolved back into his old mentor. "Intresting" He said in thought. "Whenever I want huh? This gift would be most useful when things get to exciting and I have to lay low"

Nathen consulted Elsa privatly on her thoughts. After a moment Nathen crossed his arms. "If it would not be to much trouble Elsa and I would accept your offering"

Jia smiled and nodded her head at his statement. It would do that, for a while. At least until the soldiers figured out that she'd given them the same ability to Change that she had. She sat, waiting, while Nathen and Elsa spoke privately to one another. She smiled again when they accepted. She nodded, and touched the Seal in herself so she Changed back to draconic. She swayed for about two seconds, then shook herself as she settled into all five heightened senses of a dragon. Depending on what form you chose, there may be some disorientation before you settle, as I just had. But that was merely because of the difference between the physical senses of my human self, and my dragon self. she explained, then she got to her paws and went about drawing the Seal on the ground. When she finished, she looked up at them with a curious tilt to her head. Any first volunteers? she asked, glancing from dragon to Rider and back again.

Nathen watched as Jia returned to her natural form and worried for a second as she sweighed as if to fall over. The disorientation seemed to have passed though. It did not help improve nathens worry of the seal. The drawing of the seal itself looked complicated, held a look that seemed to have come from an ancient world. Nathen surprising was the first to volunteer.

"Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." Nathen said and stepped into the middle of the circle. "This is where I am suppose to be right?" he asked

Jia smiled, her teal eyes glittering. Yes. Now, envision the form you want... she murmured. She extended a paw forward to rest it on the Seal. At her touch it glowed softly. She sent some energy into it to activate it, then hastily stepped back so she was out of the way. The Seal rose from the ground, surrounding Nathen on all sides. Don't panic... she murmured again. The Seal pulsed once, then a light flashed. When it cleared, the Seal was gone, set into Nathen's mind just like any other form of magic would be, and he was also Changed.

Nathen was a bit apprehensive about the whole magic seal. But it passed to wonder and curiosity when the light faded and he stood in a dragon form on his powefully muscled hindlegs. He took a few steps back in the unbalance of his new body and stopped. Nathen held up his left foreclaw and moved it in the pale moonlight coming from the sky. "Thats intresting" He tried to speak, but only a series of clicks came from his throat.

His human mind was assualted by its new and highly acute senses. Nathen turned his foreclaw a bit more. He clicked the talons together loudly and finally looked down. "Uh, where are my cloths?" He tryed to ask again. More clicks came from his throat followed by a low rumble. Without clothing Nathen felt vulnurable and a bit shamed. When he was in the magic seal Nathen thought of a dragon from the stories his mother told him about. And here he was in the myths living flesh. Gold, like a wheat field before harvest.

Nathen continued to stand on his hindlegs out of habit and tucked his forelimbs in close to his body giving him the look of a prairie dog.

Jia chuckled at Nathen's dragon form. Come down onto your forepaws, like I am. she advised, padding forward a few paces to stand beside his leg in case he lost his balance. She saw his throat flex, as if he wanted to speak, but all that came out of his maw was a few clicks and a low rumble. She smiled. In dragon form you have to speak with your mind, like you would with Elsa. Just extend your mind to mine or hers and speak. she said. A snicker almost burst from her at his position, but she covered it as a cough. Standing in that way, my dear pupil, only makes you look ridiculous. I'm actually surprised you can stand like that; dragons aren't made to stand vertically. she said absently. His scales glittered lightly in the moonlight. At night, even with her enhanced vision, it was difficult to see the exact shade of color they were.

Nathen looked off into the distance as he listened to Jia. Testing just how far and how well a dragons eyes could see in th dark. Needless to say it impressed him. Finally answering Jia his mind, strong and confident typical of most males brushed against hers. "You would be amazed how many dragons I have seen standing like this" He paused. "how many times that sight could have been the last thing I ever saw" Still linked to Jia's mind Nathens thought went to a memory of him in a burning human village. A dragon standing as he was in the street littered with the dead. A dragon red as the blood with gold runes glowing on its bodys. The dragon inhaled a deep breath and roared at Nathen, who stood alone in its path. The little human who was all that stood between it and the rest of Nathens race that fled. The sheer strength of the roar traveled down the street causing windows on buildings on both sides of the road to explode and shatter cascading broken glass.

Nathen shook of the memory and went to all fours. "Cain the terrible" The thought was weak but there was indication that the dragon, or was it a demon? Was still alive somwhere. Nathens thoughts went elswhere now. To how good it felt being a dragon. "It is no wonder your kind think of us as insects" Nathen turned to Elsa at some silent remark. "Correction" Nathen added. "Why most of your kind think little of us. Elsa here thinks mankind is an amazing and largly misunderstood race with a wealth of untapped potential."

Elsa came padding forward and stood next to Nathen and took a brief sniff at his kneck before addressing Jia with her mind that was calm, tranquil and gentle. Aside from the ever present and weak 'hidden agenda' that always came with it. "That is why I have dedicated myself to the study of mankind, there culture, religion, behavior, everything."

Oh, I have too, but to stand up for a long amount of time such as you did, well, it isn't exactly comfortable. she said, and shrugged. She ignored the second part of his reply. She watched the memory from the sidelines, and when it finishes she stored it away to ask about later. She had laugh at his observation of how some dragons viewed humans, or at least twolegs in general. True for some, as twolegs do confuse me and appear so...pitifully helpless, she shot him an apologetic glance. that sometimes they catch me by surprise. At least for me, I do not think little of twolegs, for they have some intriguing ideas in their minds, if us 'superior' dragons will halt for a moment and listen. I might also think that because of being Bonded to Ka. she said, and shrugged. She turned to Elsa as the poison dragon came forward and sniffed at her Rider's neck. She bared her teeth in a draconic smile. Would you like to become the being you are so enthralled with? she asked, a teasing gleam in her teal eyes. However, when she hastily shifted her gaze onto Nathen, there was no teasing light in their depths, only warning. Are you sure you want to see Elsa in human form? She is distractingly attractive in her dragon form; as a human she may be more intoxicating than I. Ka had some trouble with his...emotions...around me for a while until he got used to me. The same for this time. she said, switching her eyes from one to the other.

"Indeed" Nathen replyed to Jia in his signature monotone voice disturbingly devoid of human emotion. "The second to last dragon I faught regretted assuming me.... pittifully helpless" Nathens thoughts at this point were vague. It indicated he had killed said dragon. But out of modesty did not say it. Or fear of insulting Jia for ending the life of kin race. Either way his intent was, in his mind, was done for Jia's peace of mind and could only be respected. For if a man did his best. What more could one ask for?

Elsa as usual just listened as Nathens quiet and ever observant guardian. Waiting patiently for her turn to talk. Letting her jaw drop and hang open in her best (draconic) smile she said. "I was begining to wonder when you would ever ask"

Nathen scowled at Jia's words. Well, as best as he could scowl at the moment and used the seal in him to summon his Dashi prayer beads he had on him in human form prior. In a flash of light the prayer beads were in one of his talons. He moved the beads about in thought, looking at markings of the ancient, yet buetiful draconic writing his people adopted as there own.

"Yes I suppose Elsa is pretty as far as her kind go. But those thoughts never traveled far I assure you. Elsa in human form...." He paused to choose his words carefully. "It goes against my personal and religious morales to be intimate with someone of another race. Especially one who is of the race I swore to serve, like my father before me" He closed his talons around the prayer beads and in a flash of light they disapeared to where ever they went. "And I will not commit acts of infidelity to the one I swore my heart to. The things we shared Jia when you were in human form was simple playful flirting. Just because I was attracted to you did not mean I would have acted upon it. Even if you tried I regret to say you would have been disapointed"

He took in a deep breath. His massive lungs now full with air pushed against his chest making the outlines of his rib cage visible. Releasing the air in a sigh Nathen finally started to end what he had to say. "I thought you knew me better. I feel a littlle insulted you think me so weak. But out of our friendship and the harships we shared I will pretend this conversation never happened.

Nathen tried his best to be respectful and suppress his anger. If not pretend he was not angry. He looked to Elsa. "This is your choice Elsa, no one else's. If you truelly want to learn of humanity and what it is to be human. This is the best course. Jia has shown you the door, but only you can open it"

Nathen hoped she accepted. Not only because of the knowledge she wanted to acquire. But because perhaps she would acquire humanity, and remind him of what it was like before Nathen lost his in the horrors of war.

Jia snorted softly at Nathen, though it was one of gratitude rather than anger. Any member of her kin that would attack humans without provocation deserved to be slain so it would not cause any more unjust pain. Her teal eyes twinkled at Elsa, but she turned to Nathen and listened silently as he spoke. She sighed mentally and snorted again physically, then smiled wanly at him. You say that now. she said with a dismissing wave of her tail. Her smiled widened into a grin. And you were buzzed, almost flat out drunk, when you flirted with me, dear one. Besides, I already have a mate. she said, and smiled a bit smugly. Her teal irises glittered as she pursed her lips, trying to hold back a laugh. Ka too had known she would be attractive as a human, but had had to remind himself vehemently that he was her Rider, she his dragon. She hoped for Nathen's sake of pride that he would indeed keep his head where it belonged. She only glanced at Elsa before the gold-amethyst bent to the ground to renew the Seal. It took a minute before she was finished and stood back. Now she looked at the black-poison-dragon, waiting patiently for her answer.

Nathen gave a mental chuckle at Jia forgetting his anger at the memory at the tavern. "Aye, that I was, but drunk and buzzed are different. I lost all love blacking out in youth. There is no fun in waking up in strange places, sometimes with strange people. With no memory of the night prior. My motto back then use to be, If I dont remember it, It never happened. When I'm buzzed I'm still coherant, emotionally open, and yes, sometimes very insightful. As for flirting with a taken woman. Its all part of the game. " Nathen gave a shrug with his shoulders. "Well, up to the point your man comes in and rips me in half because he does not understand said game and fears me, a lowly human, would win the heart of his love, sweep her off her feet and ride into the sunset." Nathen nodded to Elsa and in a flash returned to his human form. He had given the spell a test drive and prefered the body he was given at birth. Further exploration in dragon form would wait to later.

Nathen felt his body over to make sure he was not missing any bodyparts. Particular parts that if went missing would not only upset him. But his future wife. With everything seemingly normal Nathen waved. "I will let you two ladys continue. But I have to go" He paused to be careful of his next answer. Nathen had to remind himself he was not with the guys in the army anymore. Draining the lizard would probably not be a phrase they would like. "I have to go use the bathroom"

Elsa watched Nathen go up and over a dune out of sight and was emediatly stricken with worry. She hated having Nate out of eyesight. Nathen always said she clucked over him to much like a mother hen. This once she figured it could not hurt. After all, what was the worst that could happen right?

Padding in the circle she closed her eyes and invisioned the human she would be if she was born as one. A schollar, student, the outcome....

Jia chuckled. Hence why I hate drinking. Ka hates it even more than I do. she said, and shook her head. She frowned playfully at Nathen at his comment of her mate swooping in and 'ripping' him in half. She snorted. He would do no such thing. He's a gentleman, believe it or not. she retorted, but her teal eyes shone with good humor. And I think you would find it difficult to 'sweep me off my feet' because, unless you were in dragon form, I'd crush you, or you'd throw your back out. she said, and laughed. She eyed him as he excused himself to the other side of a dune to relieve himself and tried to not snicker. She turned back to Elsa as the young dragoness stepped into the circle. You should be clothed, dear one, but if it happens that you aren't, I have an extra skirt and blouse in my saddlebag if you should need it. I'll stand close by also so you can duck for cover. she said. The gold-amethyst lifted a paw onto the Seal and fueled it with her energy. It did the same as for Nathen, lifting into the air to surround Elsa. After a moment it flashed with light and set itself into the dragoness's mind, and the poison female dragon was Changed to human. Jia lifted her wings partially as the light cleared, ready to spring forward and shield Elsa from sight with their canopy should it be needed for her to do so.

"Thank you Jia, but I do not think it will be nessesary. I have a clear picture". Like Nathen when the light disapeared she was different. Elsa was in the apprentice robes of alagasion monks. The same dull dirt brown robes of a monk she and Nate had once met. Elsa kept her hooded head low and slipped her hands into the sleaves. "Yes, I think this shall do well as to not attact attention" Not only that but almost garanty clear passage through army and city guard checkpoints and blockades without a second glance or harrasement. "What is taking my rider so long I wonder?"

Nathen having finished his bussiness turned around and nearly jumped out of his skin at the black cat casually sitting behind him grooming itself. "What have I told you about sneaking up on me!" Nathen growled as he regained his composure. "You know I hate that. Why are you here? Come to tell me my future again?" Nathen asked the cat mockingly. The creature had been a nuisance since it first appeared a month ago having taken intrest in him.

The cat kept grooming itself and cracked a slitted eye to look at him. Its feminine voice both buetiful and terrible in his mind. "I bring a warning. Are you sure you want to help your friend?" Nathen scowled and crossed his arms. "Yes" The cat having stopped grooming itself now gave Nathen its full attention. "As you wish, but know that this quest will kill you" Nathen raised an eyebrow. Deep down he never really believe in fate or destiny. "And if I dont help and let Jia stand alone?" The cat narrowed its eyes that seemed to look right through him. "They will fail."

Nathen was in serious termoil. At one point in his life he would not have cared if he died. But now, he would prefer not to. "Is it quick?" He asked after a silance. "No" The werecat responded with a cold emotionless voice. "You catch a arrow in the neck after you and your mercenary soldiers are overrun. You suffer helplessly under the days sun as the ravens pick at the dead of your comrades. You finally die in the middle of the night, cold, and alone" The cat resumed cleaning itself. "Help your friend with your plans and her future looks bright.... but you forfeit yours.

Again and awkward silance and Nathen starts walking back to the camp. "Go away" Was all he said. Nathen came over the dune and went right to the animal skins. He said nothing as he pulled off a boot in preparation for sleep.

Nathen would not except the outcome of the future fortold of him. "Weak men except there destiny, Strong men shape there own. He thought silently..

Post Re: The Sellsword (open)
Jia merely nodded, smirking as Elsa appeared as a female human monk. She shook herself and laid out on the sand to soak up the early morning sun that was just beginning to sneak over the horizon. She was dozing lightly by the time Nathen returned. She blinked at the human male, huffing a bit, but half-lidded her eyes and went back into her snooze. She heard a shift in the sand out to her left. Her wing twitched in response. She opened her left eye to see if anything was out there, but saw nothing. She dismissed it as a lizard or snake. She huffed out and half-closed her eye again. She heard it once more but didn't react. She heard a sharp exhale of breath through a thin tube. A brief thought of Dragon Hunters came to mind before pain exploded into the circular scar on her neck, piercing the softened skin easily. A dart. She surged to her feet and spun, her fangs bared in a snarl. She made to spring but staggered, the liquid in the dart already taking affect.

She knew from experience that they could be filled with a powerful sleep potion or even a poison to weaken the draconic immune system. In this case it was a sleeping drug. She shook her head to clear it, her breath coming in gasps. Another dart found its mark but bounced off her hard scales and onto the ground. A shot of anger thrilled through her, pushing away the affects of the drug. Her scales lit with light, radiating an intense golden glow. Her snarl was angry. Backstabbers! she hissed. Come out and fight like men instead of hiding and attacking like venomous vipers! she shouted. The scar itched. No one answered her challenge. She shook her head again and the light from her scales died to nothing. She swayed. She growled out a Reapric curse, the native tongue of her Rider. Damnation. she almost sighed, and sat down heavily, almost falling onto her side as the haze drifted over her vision. Nathen...Get that dart out of my scar, would you? she asked. Once it was out of her, her immune system would fight the drug naturally.

OOC:
Wow, sorry. Nathen's comment about the hunters made this come to mind and this poured out. :?

Nathen shifted a bit in the animal skins and sat up quickly at the comotion. "What the F!?" Nathen blurted as he barely had time to react. He raised the thick animal skins up and used it as a shield as the darts stuck in it. Throwing away the makeshift shield Nathen jumped up to assess the whole situation. It became emediatly evident it was not good. Elsa, still in human form was on the ground with a dart in the neck and unmoving. Jia was not to far behind either. Unknowing to him a hunter put Nathen in a chock hold from behind. Choking from the hold Nathen jabbed his elbows backwards striking his attacker in the sides. A follow up strike with the back of his head to the hunters face released the hold.

The young rider out of pure hate and anger grabbed the hunter that was holding his face. A black mist eminated off Nathens right palm just before he slapped the slayer in the chest with a force of black magic he had learned in his travels. The sad thing, Black magic came naturally to him while the ancient magic of the elves came with great difficulty and often with poor results. Seeing a large group of slayers coming Nathen Spun the hunter around and wispered in his ear as arrows came flying. "Feel arrow proof today?" Within seconds Nathens human shields chest looked like a pin cusion. The black magic came into effect now as his still living hostage screamed as his blood burned like liquid fire. Shoving the hunter forward into the group there was a loud bang as the hunter exploded in a red mist blowing his comrades into pieces and sending others flying in all directions.

Grabbing the sword on the ground Nathen bolted towards Jia in a zigzag pattern, Arrows landing and sticking in the sand all around him. Reaching Jia Nathen did a side roll over her and used Jia as a shield now. "Sorry, but you take arrows better then I do" Nathen grabbed the dart and pulled it out with a firm slap to Jias neck. "Hurry up and get in the fight. There are more coming"

He would have prefered to keep the whole black magic thing secret from his no doubt upset mentor. But there was no hiding it anymore. There were to many slayers to take on with a sword alone.

Almost instantly after the dart was gone she felt better. Her limbs and her thinking was still sluggish, but she could function. She looked at Nathen with disapproval when she saw him use black magic. She grit her teeth and set that aside for later. Elsa. Keep them away from Elsa. she gasped as she staggered to her feet. She weaved for a moment before clarity came to her with a jolt. She saw Elsa, sweet Elsa, on the ground with a dart in the neck. Three hunters approached her, greed glittering in their eyes. Her scales exploded with light as her anger swelled in her chest. She roared and sprang, her eyes locked on the three hunters. Too late they saw her brightly glowing scales. She swiped them aside with one paw, crushing their skulls. The gold-amethyst crouched over Elsa protectively, her snarl that of a mother dragon shielding her young. Technically she was. The other hunters hesitated at her ferocity and lit gold hide. She sprang away from the female human toward the group. Take care of any that get past me. she growled to Nathen. A swell of draconic magic burst from her, pushing back the hunters and unbalancing them so it was a rather easy thing to kill one or two with a swipe of her claws or crunch of her teeth.

"I know dammit I know!" Nathen yelled as he ran towards his uncouncious secondary soul mate. Kneeling down he pulled the dart out of her neck and stood back up. "I know it goes against your instincts but try to refrain from killing every living thing in sight!" He called after Jia as she attacked. Nathen pointed his sword towards some young hunters that got by her. Veiny strands of black magic danced over the hand he had at his side as the dark rider spoke to them. "Do not throw your lives away. Nothing but death waits you. The cold of a all consuming darkness. Put down your weapons and you will be spared"

Seeing the madness of taking on a dark rider and a very angry female dragon the young men put down there weapons and fell to there knees and put there hands behind there heads. Nathen indeed was a strange one. He was a dark rider by nature. But was not as blood thirsty as most riders that 'claimed' to be good. A contradiction that made no sense.

"Jia for the love of all that is good stop killing them! Talk to them! They dont want to die just as much as we do! Order them to surrender!" Nathen knew she had some mental issues with slayers. But with his brother Damean being one, Nate knew most were victims forced into the life.

One of the experienced hunters that fell to his back from the force of the magic that came from the dragon was horrified seeing one of his brothers crunched in the reptiles jaws. The poor soul screaming in pain followed by the silance and the loud cracks of breaking bones. The slayer saw no victory here. There commanding officer was dead. The man tossed his spear to the side and remained on his back. His hands held up in deafeat before the angry dragon. "NO! NO!" He called out expecting the same fate. 'Mercy! I have a family"

It could have been a lie braught on by fear. Or truth. But in the end would it really matter. This little defensless man who's passing would not be noticed in the world. Or mourned. A nameless body that was just a number in the line of casualtys.

Nathen looked around seeing the others starting to throw down there weapons in defeat. His only worry was Jia now. "Dont do anything stupid" He said as his mind brushed against hers. "When fighting monsters, you must be careful you dont become one"

Jia didn't fully hear Nathen. Not at first. She was shaken from her anger when, after crunching a hunter to death in her jaws, one of the more experienced hunters begged for mercy. She spat the hunter she'd killed onto the ground and rounded on the one that held his hands up, as if to ward her off. Then Nathen's plea registered in her mind. She closed her eyes and shook her head infinitesimally once. Her scales dimmed to their normal radiance. She drew in a deep breath, then opened her eyes. Her gaze was cold. Up on your feet. Go join the others on their knees. she ordered sharply. She was swinging around to the Rider when something fluttered at the edge of her vision. A face she had hoped was only in her memory. She turned fully and saw a single lone figure, dressed all in black. There was a scar over the left eye, starting at the eyebrow and ending at the corner of the mouth. The remaining eye, a piercing emerald green, didn't shrink from her gaze like most twolegs did. She didn't move either away nor toward the figure, who was a man. And a very highly trained and experienced Dragon Hunter. Her blood turned to ice, but she lowered her head toward the man, her gaze as cold as his. Why are you here? she asked quietly.

He shifted, lifting a long serrated blade that seemed more like a large knife than a sword,"To finish the job Galbatorix didn't get the chance to finish." he almost whispered. Her pupils narrowed. Go back to your Black Alter king and tell him he can go to hell. she snarled and turned away. Then stopped and twisted her head back. Why? Why put all of these humans through mediocre training, taking them from their families, just to be slaughtered like sheep? she asked. He smiled, twisting the scar gruesomely across his cheek. He advanced forward three steps, lifting the blade in his hand. A faint whimper escaped her and she backed away from him, cringing. His smile turned cruel,"You fear my presence. Understandable." he purred. She growled, but it was half-hearted..

Nathen stared at the new face. His attention distracted a hunter on his knees started to reach for his weapon in the sand but did not get far. Nathen smacked the top of the mans hand with the flat of his blade. "Dont" Was all Nathen said in a stern commanding voice. The dark rider looked at the man and the scars he bore. Without warning Nathen hit the hunter in the temple with the butt of his sword hilt and putting out the kneeling mans lights.

Elsa was starting to stir now as Nathen came up to stand beside Jia. He put a hand on her neck in assurance. "Its ok" His voice crept into her mind. "Your friends are here beside you. Do not fear, our deaths are not for today" Nathens death was foretold later.

Elsa was awake now and changed to her dragon form to also stand beside Jia. "What did I miss?" She asked. "Meh, not much" Nathen replyed. Nathen looked at the man in black before him and he scowled. The half of his horribly burn scarred face wrinkling up giving Nathen a ugly look.

Nathen did not break off the stare but communicated with Jia privatly. "I see you are worried..... so on a level 1 through 10 how screwed are we?" No matter what the answer would be Nathen would reply in one of his classic confident quotes. "I like those odds"

Nathen extended the open gloved palm of his weapon free hand and wispered a word of power. A sword lying in the sand nearby came flying on its own accord into Nathens hand with a loud smack. Wield two swords now Nathen figured this man would think little of him. There was a big misconception of duel sword masters being rash, blood thirsty savages. But it was quite the contrary. They were, for the most part, well diciplined. To wield two swords required years of training. Those who tryed otherwise generally ended up missing fingers from self injury.

At this point Nathen was ready for whatever would happen. Be it to fight, or flee. For nathen learned from his past encounter with the dread dragon Cain the terrible that not all enemys can be slain by the sword, magic, or bow. Sometimes all you could do was survive. And that was a victory all in itself. Something he was very good at.

Jia flinched at Nathen's touch, something she'd never done before, at least not with him. Cold, burning fear was freezing over her body, making her tremble. The man took a few more steps forward. She cringed and seemed to shrink in size, not physically but visually she seemed less ferocious. She was shaking so hard and so paralyzed with fear she couldn't respond to Nathen's inquiry. The man smiled cruelly,"Ah, the power in watching a creature so much bigger and stronger than one self cower before you like a beaten dog is so..empowering." he said, and chuckled at his lame joke. He brandished his serrated blade,"You are no doubt wondering what could possibly have happened between us that would make your friend tremble so. Let me explain. When she was younger, perhaps five months or so, she was captured, along with her Rider, and brought before the king. They both were tortured for several days, and she herself was raped by Shruikan." his smile turned into a sadistic grin,"I was the administer of her torture. I was ordered to break her, and break her I did. The strong, if not unbeatable and ferocious mentor you've always known is nothing but a show. On the inside she is a broken, useless hatchling." he sneered. This whole time Jia had been getting smaller and smaller. Tears streamed from her eyes, but she did not hide them. I was broken, for a while. But I'm healing. And so is Ka. You can not hurt me nor my students without your precious torturing devices, so why don't you crawl back to the Capitol before I crush you under my paw? she snarled. She now stood at her full height, towering above Nathen and Elsa. She still trembled, but her teal gaze was steady and cold on his.

Nathen listened, but then again he did not. He just gave a chuckle as if listening to the ramblings of a child and flipped his swords middway threw the mans speech and stuck the points into the sand. Still, knowing the story made him wonder why Jia did not kill him in the bar when he told her of his evil pasts. Of the people he killed and woman he violated as a soldier in his majestys army. Even though it was his right under the old laws of spoils of war.

When the speach was done, in Nathens unpredictable ways. He reached behind him to grab the small crossbow that was secured to his back with its buttstock in his pants. "You talk to much" Without warning Nathen pulled it out from behind him with one hand, pointed, and fired while aiming at the mans throat. Nathen knew he was terrible at a bow. The whole controlling tention in the string thing always beat him. The marvelous crossbow in its recent invention got rid of that problem making him confident in his aim.

After firing the crossbow Nathen kept his hand extended and dropped it. In the incredible span of a second he grabbed the two swords sticking out of the dirt ready to finish off the job if the arrow failed.

The man chuckled and stepped to the side, out of the arrow's path,"My little ignorant friend, I've been training for nigh on 40 years by Galbatorix himself, as well as some of his best assassins and Dragon Hunters. I don't think you have a single prayer against me." he said. Jia's snarl was guttural as she stepped slightly in front of Nathen, her lips peeling back to bare her teeth. Bastana! Leave them out of this! she hissed angrily. For the first time, he took a step back. I am your quarry. I'm the one your after. Leave them alone. she said in a quieter tone. He stepped in the opposite direction, toward Elsa, and her snarl turned deeper, threatening. Take one more step to my student and I will gut you and scatter the pieces to the wind for the birds to pick at. she said in almost a whisper. He paused, then looked directly at her, smiled, and took another step. Daring her. She snarled and sprang. The man leapt out of her range, brandishing the serrated blade. Stay back. I will not let him possibly hurt you or Elsa because of me. she growled to Nathen. She jumped straight up into the air as he slashed at her feet, unfurling her wings and flapping so she went right over his head. She wasn't high enough, however, and he managed to jab the tip of his blade into her stomach and slash down to her pelvis. She snarled and limped as she landed. She whirled to face the man. Her blood dripped from the tip of her sword. She snarled again and began to circle around him.

Nathen raised an eyebrow seeing the man move slightly as the arrow narrowly missed his throat. He was impressed, but it was not the first time he had seen someone do it. "Hey buddy" Nathen said blankly again. "Your doing that talking thing again. Do you really love hearing your own voice so much?" The talking was actually helping Nathen alot. Pretending not to be impressed only seemed to loosen the assains tounge more. Revealing vital intelligence he could use against the man in a fight. He was a trained dragon hunter. Knowledge that was useless against humans. But he was a trained assasin. Good information to know since Nathen had spent some time training with a old retired elven assasin of the empire before he ever met Jia or Elsa. And the man thought little of Nathen, revealing he did not know exactly how dangerous the dark dragon rider was. Nathen was trained a little over the average with the assasin arts. Any strengths he had Nathen decided he would hold off until nessesary. The more cards he kept hidden. The better chance of victory.

OC: Good thing I had nathen trained briefly as a assasin in his bio

IC:

"JIA! NOOO!" Nathen called out with his voice as she attacked. But it was to late. The damage was done. He reached out with his mind now as Jia circled the black clothed man. "Jia back off and let me handle this" He hoped she would listen to reason. "He is in your head Jia. Your not focused. Your going to get yourself killed.

Nathen started moving in. His eyes never leaving the enigmatic enemy before him as he spoke to Jia. "Keep at a distance, but close enough to bath him in fire. The freak clearly outskills you in close combat. If you die I will lose it and then I will die. For both our sakes, back off and let me handle him. Tell me everything you know about his fighting style by mind

Speaking to the man now Nathen spoke in his signature blank montone voice. "So you were trained by the king? Really? I was kind of expecting more. How could a sad, pethetic little man like yourself even catch the great kings intrest. I was actually contemplating joining him. But now, I dont know. His standards in underlings is clearly underated."

Nathen almost expected the man to start another speech. He seemed the prideful type that lavished in telling those he was about to kill of his greatness.

Jia hesitated but didn't pull back. This man had tortured her for three days, and had continued to torture her for several months following. Only after laying Sarai's egg did the nightmares finally stop. She continued to circle him. But that wasn't the real reason. This man had also tortured Ka. Her pain was nothing in comparison to feeling his over their link. For hurting her Rider, this man would die. That's the problem. He's been in my head for far too long now. she replied shortly. She sprang out of range as the man lunged forward with a slash at her shoulder. From some hidden scabbard he produced another blade, much smaller, but still serrated, and hurled it at her. It sank to the hilt into her scar on her neck. Her shriek was more anger than pain driven, though her knees trembled. Her neck felt like it had been dipped into acid. Making him angry will only sharpen his wits, not dull them. Make him feel at ease, like this kill will be a game rather than a fight. He'll get cocky and start showing off a bit. Even then he's guarded. she said in reply to Nathen. He will also use any advantage he can get, underhanded or not. He's not above threatening my life or Elsa's or yours to get any one of us to surrender. she said. As she said this another serrated knife was thrown toward the black-poison-dragoness. No! the gold-amethyst cried. She knew it was a bad idea. But she would not let Nathen be hurt like she had been. She leapt forward into the knife's path, taking it into her shoulder. She turned toward the man, her eyes glowing. Draconic magic swelled from her, knocking the man back a few steps. His eyes widened.

Elsa wimpered at seeing Jia hurt and back up a few steps, hesitant to even fight. She had never really been a battle and had zero experience. Nathen had always been the one doing the fighting.

Nathen almost lost it seeing Jia take the blow defending Elsa. "Stupid goody two shoes idiot!" His mind said to her more out of anger in seeing her in pain then the noble selfless act.

"I'm tired of your games!" Nathen yelled and charged the man. The dark rider had thrown out all tact and decided to give in to the hate, fury, and darker thoughts. It would only fuel him. Still charging Nathen spoke in a voice that was dark and powerful. With the spell activated he swung his swords while still charging. Each swing sending out a horizontal, diagnal, or vertical line of dark magic that would quite literally cut the man in pieces if they hit. Those that missed would strike the ground with a puff of black corrosive mist that would eat through armor and flesh alike the longer one stayed in it.

Jia snarled but didn't respond to Nathen. Her irritation turned to horror as the dark Rider finally attacked. Her eyes went wide. Nathen, no! That's what he wants! He has complete control of you if your angry! she cried desperately, but her warning came too late. The smile that spread across the man's face was sadistic and cruel. He wove expertly around the slashes, avoiding where they hit as if he'd been trained to. It struck her that he actually might have, with a master like Galbatorix. And then she also how the man was running. He was circling, in a way, gradually, around Nathen, toward her and Elsa. No, to Elsa. His circle was too wide for him to encounter Jia. He meant to attack the black-poison-dragoness. A shriek of rage and of draconic maternal instinct swelled in her. She roared angrily, sending the man flying backwards with a wave of magic. She pinned him down to the ground with her magic, crushing him against the earth so it was difficult for him to breath. Never attack my family. she hissed. He was struggling against the bonds, pushing up, but it was futile.

Nathens anger grew more and more as his opponent dodged the magic blasts and corrosive black mist that came after. His heart skipped a beat as the man dancing around like a village idiot was thrown to his back and pinned down. Rechanneling his efforts with a rather long sentence of words Nathen added his magic to Jias helping to help keep the man pinned. Though it was probably not nessesary at this point Nathen did not want this jester doing anything he did not want him to.

Not intending to waste time Nathen jogged over. He was still furious and his mind went to darker thoughts. Of the things he would do to the man.
One thing was clear. When Nathen reached him. The man would die slowly and as painfully as humanly possible.

"Nathen! Calm yourself!" Elsa pleaded. "Remember what Ba'al said on the island about controlling it and not letting it control you! You must meditate!" The young black poison dragon placed herself between him and the man adding. "It is not your place to decide his fate" Turning her head she looked to Jia. The one who had say and right to do with the prisoner as she saw fit. Nathen grumbled and sheathed his sword. "Fine, but make it slow. Death is a release, not a punishment"

Jia was about as consumed as Nathen in her anger. When Elsa stepped in front of her Rider to calm him down, and looked at her, she too managed to come back to her right mind. She took a deep breath before looking at the man pinned to the ground. There was no fear in his eyes, yet, only contempt and hatred. I will make him understand the pain he caused, no more. Two wrongs do not make a right. But I will aim for equality. she said quietly, walking forward slowly toward the man. A flicker of apprehension touched his face, but it was gone in the next moment. She gazed down at him, her expression a strange mixture of warm and cold. Abruptly her tail lashed out, slicing down the length of the mans leg with it's blade. The man grunted but made no further sound. Take care of the other Hunters, Nathen. He's not going anywhere. she told the Rider without looking away from the man. The ivory colored bone of her tail-blade was dyed slightly crimson.

"I'm calm" Nathen told Elsa and ducked under her to come into view on the other side. Two wrongs dont make a right? What kind of horse crap is that!? "I'm telling you Jia letting this guy live is a bad idea" Nathen pointed a finger. "If you let him live you will have to live with the deaths of those he kills after today. There blood will be as much on your claws as on his hands"

"As for dealing with the hunters" Nathen lifted his hands in the air briefly. "What hunters!?" They all ran like dogs with there tails between there legs when we dealt with this guy"

Looking down at the injury Jia inflicted on the man Nathen again threw his hands into the air in dismay. "Thats it? Thats your brilliant idea of teaching him a lesson!?" Nathen reached behind him and pulled a knife from the sheath at the base of his back. "If you wont do what needs to be done I will make this easy for you. I will do it. No guilt, no responsiblity. I wont lose any sleep over it. Whats one more face in my nightmares."

It was a sort of twisted, touching offer. She would have revenge and not the guilt of having killed a defenseless man herself. But still there would always be the knowledge of having turned a blind eye to murder. And murder it was. Nathen could live with it. He lived with alot of things. The mans life was in Jia's claws. She just had to say the word and Nathen would end his wreched life.

Jia's growl was low, but not directed, specifically, at Nathen. He needs hands to hurt or torture with. a devilish gleam entered her eye. I'm not going to let him live. I'm going to pull him apart, first skin from muscle, then muscle from bone, until all that is left is a whimpering, pathetic torso that more closely resembles a butchered animal than a human being. she said calmly, her gaze never leaving the man's. She saw him shudder. Just like he did when he tortured me. After I've butchered his flesh, I'll remove his limbs, one by bloody one, as he tried to do with part of my tail and both my wings. here she paused in her detailed explanation and looked up at Nathen. I've tortured someone before that has hurt me or Ka. This time is no different. And I won't let you take one more nightmare. You suffer enough as it is. she said, and snorted affectionately at him. Without even looking down, her tongue darted out and swiped up his leg, removing the skin from the muscle. Another swipe and the muscle was removed to show the faint white gleam of bone. The man's shriek of pain was music to her ears,"Goldenscales, please, I beg you! I was only following orders!" he cried desperately. Her snarl was deep and animalistic. A bit late for forgiveness, don't you think? she hissed, and deftly removed his right foot with a twist of her claws. His wail rose to a high keening sound.

Nathen sheathed the knife at the base of his back and listened to Jia as he pulled out a leather spy glass with multiple glass lenses he could remove or add to adjust the zoom and focus. He really want to tell her 'ok then, quite talking and do it already". But for one reason or another he did not. When she was done speaking and started the task Nathen ordered Elsa to scout the area. Not only to warn of danger. But keep her out of sight and sound of the fowl bussiness going on here out of sight.

Leaving Jia to her revenge Nathen climbed a sand dune and crawled the rest of the way as he neared the top. Lying prone with only his head visible Nathen looked through his spy glass, scanning the bare land for any approaching forces they did not know about. If there were any at all.

Ignoring the screams of the tortured behind him Nathen reached out and brushed Jia's mind. "After this we need to split up. Just do me a favor alright" His thoughts drifted to the werecat. "When your done with your friends overseas hurry back as quick as you can ok. The longer you delay after your quest, the greater my chances of death are. I cant stop raising hell here in Alagasia until I know your done"

The werecat fortold Nathens death. He just hoped Jia would arrive in time to save him and deny fate its claim on his life.

Post Re: The Sellsword (open)
As she tortured the man, occasionally twisting off this limb or that, Jia also shared with him the pain from her own torture. After ten minutes of this, the pain became too great for him. His heart stopped. She stared down in disgust at him before finally snorting and turning away. He didn't deserve a burial. The birds could pick at his corpse for all she cared. She padded away toward Nathen and stopped beside him. She was silent for a moment. As you wish. And you have my word, as soon as I am able I will come. she looked at her student, her gaze intense at his mention of death. But there are other ways to stay in contact, for dragons, at least. she said absently. I can not remember if I ever told you of it. It is an object that allows a specific dragon to speak to whomever he or she wishes regardless of distance. I promised it to Ka for when I was older, but convenience takes precedence over promise. she mused, watching the dark Rider carefully. Oh, and when Elsa returns, warn her away from the bottom of the dune. she advised, glancing back briefly toward the mutated remains of the man. Her claws still glinted a soft red from the stain of his blood.

Abruptly her vision darkened alarmingly and she swayed. She felt light-headed. Her wounds! She had the ragged slash from her abdomen to her pelvis, the knife in her scar and the second knife in her shoulder. She was surprised she was still conscious. Wearily, feeling very, very tired and as old as the earth itself, she carefully lowered herself to the ground, laying half on her side so the wound on her abdomen didn't get sand and grit into it. Her scar on the left side of her neck throbbed angrily in unison with the beat of her heart, and her left shoulder stung ferociously from the second knife. She laid her head and neck down on the ground, closing her eyes. Nathen... she murmured to the dark Rider, sending him a flickering image of her wounds with a silent query.

Nathen grunted at Jia's promise. "Good, I'm counting on you sky queen" Listening to Jia further as he scanned the desert Nathen said. "I would have to disagree there. A promise is a promise. If you said you would give it to your rider then that is all that needs to be said. Besides, it would be unwise to stay in touch with you. I will never have anything good to say and worrying over me will distract you from the task at hand. Worry about me only when your quest is completed."

Nathen mused over Jia's advice to keep Elsa way from the body. "No need to tell me twice. She never was one for fighting. Though as a child she loved hearing my war storys. Elsa always said she would be a dragon I would be proud of. But after seeing her first battle she grew ill. Not everyone is cut out for it, I can tell you that.

Recieving the mental inquiry of her wounds Nathen turned to look over his shoulder and saw Jia lying down. "By the gods Jia! I thought you took care of that already!" She was a big girl and always had before. "That guy really got to you" Getting up quickly Nathen went over to inspect them. Speaking the words of power to heal Nathen was grimly disapointed to see little to no effect as usual. "Your wounds are severe, I need more energy" Blurting something as he raised his palm Nathen shot his open hand to the ground and a blast of dark magic caused a dark magic circle to form in the sand.

"Stay awake! This will take a moment, I have to perform a spell weave" Reciting the long spell from memory with his time with Ba'al on the misty isle. Nathen weaved dark and elven magic as one. One palm spouted a black flame, the other a blue one. Time seemed to drag on as Nathen spoke. Black veiny lines of dark magic creaping up his legs and and body from the dark magic circle he stood in.

At last Nathen finally cast the spell of healing powered by his dark magic. The deep wounds on Jia slowly started to close. Cut capalaries and veins were the first to heal. Then after the flesh knitted back together sealing the wounds. Drained from his efforts Nathen fell to his knees and the different colored flames in his palms disapeared along with the dark circle. "Sorry" Was all Nathen said. "I dwell in the darkness, and those who use the forbidden black arts cannot use magic of the elves without a great deal of energy. Even somthing so simple as healing.

"Well" He said after a few gasps to reclaim hsi breath. "I guess thats not entirelly true. I have one foot in the light, the other in the dark. Nathen chuckled as he struggled back to his feet. "Ba'al always use to stress on the importance of balance. That light could not exist without night and vice versa. Balance. Dark dragon knights now adays only study the destructive ways of the black arts. You are lucky enough to see a spell weave. I dont think that has been used in centurys" Combining the strengths of dark and light magic. Indeed that was not something many saw.

Nathen went over to inspect Jia now. "Just try explaining that to the Varden and elves though. They still throw me in league with the king and empire. I guess some just dont understand.

Jia snorted lightly but kept silent. Elsa is not alone their. My Niece is the same; she abhors violence, to the point of becoming ill. she said idly. She had to chuckle at his reaction to her injuries. I can only use my magic when I'm angered. she replied quietly, closing her eyes. She slipped unconscious and then came to a few minutes later. Nathen was standing with one colored flame in each hand, dark magic touching his legs and body in a dark circle on the ground. Her wounds were healed. She lifted her head as he fell to his knees, the flames disappearing. She listened to him speak of his use of magic, snorting forcefully when he finished. You are strong in what you do. That is the best anyone can ask for. And your Ba'al is right in that. Shadow can not exist without Light. And shadow is not necessarily evil, only those that use it for evil. she said. She shifted, tentatively stretching her neck. Ka's Seals have a similar use, I believe. He doesn't use it though. she sighed. Her growl was abruptly low and threatening. Make sure no one calls you evil or dark spirited in my presence. They will find themselves flattened on their backs before they can say 'Shade'. she snorted. She got up and stretched. The scar on her neck twinged painfully though the wound was healed. She lifted a leg and rubbed at the scar with her paw. Demons above and below. she muttered under her breath in the Reapric Language.

"I doubt you throwing them on there backs with a pulse of magic will help my cause Jia" He said in thought, as if his mind was elswhere. And it was. He had said last night at the campfire that he felt as if the kings eyes were almost upon him. It was even worse now. Nathen had thought that the hunters and Jia's past torturer was the cause of the ill feeling. Now Nathen had his doubts. The source Nathen feared was a dark rider kind of like him. The time of hiding from the kings riders had seemed to pass. Sooner then Nathen had wanted.

"They would probably just assume I have you bewitched under some spell" He paused to commune with Elsa and added. "After all, who in there right mind would defend a dark rider right?" That statement was said witha tone that indicated Nathen did not expect Jia to take it seriously. Being a dragon though she probably would.

"You should go. You have wasted enough time on my account, and you still have allys to gain for your quest across the sea. Dont forget your promise to me" Nathen said abruptly with authority. "May favorable winds carry your wings" Ignoring Jia completly now Nathen started to go through the weapons the slayers had left behind when they fled. Nathen never had magical swords befitting his fighting style so he always scavanged for anything that was better then his old one when the opportunity came.

Unless it was a high ranking person, such as Lady Nasuada, King Orrin, or Queen Islanzadí, the person that insulted you in such a way would find themselves in an interesting situation. she muttered under her breath. At Nathen's dry comment and rhetorical question, she had to snort in amusement. Sometimes, my friend, you remind me so much of Ka. she said to him, and chuckled. Her smiled turned into a frown at his reminder of her mission. She sighed. Very true, little one, but spending time with one of my pupils is hardly a waste of my time. And do not fret so much. Between me, Ka, Cy Ara, Tyleek, and now my brother, we will have plenty of recruits. she said quietly. Let's just hope they don't all get killed. she thought. She got to her paws and stretched, unfurling her wings for flight. Have no fear, my friend. I will come. she promised. And thank you. she beat her wings and sprang nimbly into the air. Say good-bye to Elsa for me, and try to stay out of trouble until I get back. she said dryly, grinning down at him, then turned in the air and flew off.
