rock of kuthian
my apologies if this idea has already been suggested.
in the first novel, saphira states how much she loves the hadarac desert. i think that since dragons love the desert, that is where they made their homes. knowing this, i think the rock of kuthian is a mountain of fortress in the heart of the hadarac that holds the eldunari not stolen by galbatorix and other dragon eggs waiting to be found. the vault of sous could keep the eldunari, which would greatly improve eragons strength.
also, since nobody can remember the rock, but it sounds familiar, i think vrael or another rider before the fall of the riders put a spell on the rock like the one on the names of the forsworn dragons so that galbatorix could never find the eldunari and eggs. what does everyone else think?

I think thats a good idea. I think that the hohs are the ones of wild dragons. A rider probably did put a spell on the rock.

It would be hard for Eragon to get there though unless the battle takes them up into that region but even so that is a very secluded place.

Vroengard. It's really north and out of the way. Plus, the Varden is headed for Uru' baen.

Actually it's not. Vroengard was the rider's island. It would be more likely to be there than somewhere in the Hadarac Desert.

But if it was so important to the Riders, Oromis would have probably remembered more about it. And yeah it is really out of the way.

thats a good point and it would mean it definitely involves dragons. so if its the entrance to the vault of souls what could be in there other than eldunari

It's possible that there will be eldunari in the VoS. It could also just give him more strength without the eldunari.

Re: rock of kuthian
the rock could be there, but I would wager on Vroen'gaurd (best I can spell w/out checking). One problem with the Eldurnari vault idea: Oromis said all the Eldurnari were accounted for before Galby stole them, and none disappeared mysteriously. However, there could be some very old Eldurnari in them. I beloved Brom said something similar about eggs, but the same also applies. As for the "speak your name" part of the prophecy, that's obviously Eragon's true name. However, if a true name describes you completely, then the Rock could have a spell that judges if you can open it by your true name. (ie, Galby couldn't get in because his true name would say that he was evil.) Eragon's name must be pure enough to open it.

Re: rock of kuthian
There isn't a spell on the rock like the one on the Foresworn's dragons. if it were then eragon wouldn't remember the name either, nor could solembaum, nor saphira. maybe it is protected by a spell but not like the one on the dragons. i doubt galb knows about the rock. he could find some pure hearted fellow, guess his name, make the man speak his name and open the vault. and about the location... i doubt it is in vroengard, galb searched the place and destroyed everything. the hadarac is a good place but it has no mountains, it's a desert. i thought about this and i think it might be in the stone forest in the Beors, or where vrael fought galb, by the entrance to palancar valley. there is a Riders' outpost there and there are mountains too. This is just a thought. Oh and i just thought about something: Helgrind. There are 4 -rocks?- there and the ra'zac lived in one of them. Maybe it is the little one, the priests argue about, whether they should pray to it or not.

Re: rock of kuthian
so how is he going to find it? he must be told by someone where the rock is. if no one remembers, then eragon won't find anything. i think the rock might have something to do with the magic users. actually not just users, but those whose blood is full of magic like the elves. Arya and Oromis said that they heard it before but don't know where. maybe when the gray folk bound the use of magic to the AL, they locked themselves and their power in the VoS. oromis said they didn't know what happened to the gray folk after their spell. maybe everyone that has magic in their blood(the elves) are somehow linked to the rock. (new theory)

Re: rock of kuthian
I don't think the Grey Folk did that, when they are talking about them Oromis said they dwindled out or something like that which means they were still around for others to see. I think its possible a dwarf might know. They live just as long as elves and since there are so many there is a chance there might be someone who is still alive that was alive back then. Maybe even an Urgal knows, the chief said that Eragon would be welcome in any of their villages so maybe he ends up going to one.

Re: rock of kuthian
first of all oromis said they did not know what happened to them. he said that maybe they mixed with the other races. second, the dwarves aren't immortal like the elves, they just live longer than humans, a few hundred years. and i don't think the urgals have much written culture, literature.
i still think that the rock has something to do with the grey folk.

Re: rock of kuthian
1. He never said that they mixed with the other races he says, "The manuscripts differ on what happened to the Grey Folk when they completed their work, but it seems that the enchantment drained them of their power and left them but a shadow of themselves. They faded away, choosing to live in their cities until the stones crumbled to dust or to take mates among the younger races and so pass into darkness."
2. We don't know how long dwarfs live and I never said they were immortal. There is a difference between living a long time and being immortal and since it is nowhere stated at what age dwarfs die, it is still a possibility that some were alive back then.
3. There isn't much knowledge about the Urgals. They don't have to have written things down for it to be culture. They could no more about some things than the elves.

Re: rock of kuthian
taking mates from the younger races is mixing with them. i think in eragon, orik or hrothgar explain that dwarves live a few hundred years. and you said they lived as long as elves, whitch are immortal i doubt that anyone knows more about anything than the elves, except maybe werecats and other such magical creatures. but you have a point, urgals might know something although not written culture gets lost through the ages.

Re: rock of kuthian
Taking mates does not mean mixing with other races. Just because they took mates doesn't mean they bore offspring. I highly doubt they did and Oromis said that they faded away which means they are gone. Just because the elves are smart doesn't mean they know absolutely everything. Dwarfs know more about caves, mining, the plants that grow down there, ways to cook meat, and a lot of other things. They don't just live a couple hundred years because somewhere it said they had a ruler for like 500 years.
Anyway this is way off topic. End of discussion.

Re: rock of kuthian
we are not off topic. we were discussing the theory that other races could know something about Kuthian. you're right dwarves might know something about The rock of Kuthian, after all they are into rocks . 500 years isn't that much comparing with thousands of years.
anyway i think CP will explain in the fourth book more about the grey folk.
But better than arguing we should think what sort of name is Kuthian. is it elven, human, dwarvish, urgal, dragonish(is this a word?)? that would help us solve this mistery
Jaythe_wise wrote: i think in the middle there is some mountains, yeah i just checked there are some mountains
if Kuthian is the name of a dragon, the rock might be in the desert. but who knows?

Re: rock of kuthian
dragons don't have a language. They gained the ability of use language after the elves bound the dragons and themselves together. If you remember Eragon talking to Arya while they were in the empire he says that when Glaedr is communicating with Saphira he rarely uses words and instead relies on images.

if they don't use language it doesn't mean they don't have names. i don't think Kuthian is an elven name, nor human, nor dragon. i don't know about the dwarves, some of them have really messed up names. i think it's an old name from an old race like the Grey folk

Re: rock of kuthian
not really. romania and moldova are 2 diferent countries but they speak the same language and the names are different. this is a special case because romania and moldova are 2 countries but one nation. the grey folk were a lot older than the elves so they must have had different names than them. i don't think you remember but brom or oromis said that at first al nations spoke the same language, the AL. everyone forgot the language but it was brought back by the elves when they came to alagaesia.
do you think the rock of kuthian is very old, since before the elves came to alagaesia or after?

He probably didn't because he forgot or it would be wrong to ask the wrong people. There are always eavesdroppers on leaders and he doesn't always block their conversations from others and when you ask questions others will have more and it isn't a good idea to let a lot of people know about that.

Re: rock of kuthian
Maybe there is a reason that he isn't thinking about it. He is only supposed to go there in a time of need and he doesn't even know where to begin looking.

well not just looking, asking around. queen islanzadi, maud, some dwarf priest, some urgal priest(if they have any), angela, tenga. as i said... he is the biggest dumbass. i'm sure tenga would know something...he is old and he solved many questions as angela said.

I highly doubt it. We don't know much about him or that his questions are of relative importance and again like I said, that is a lot of people and it isn't a good idea to tell a lot of people.

some or most of his 'questions' are probally useless but there might be a couple that might do some good.
and i would ask all who are without any doubt loyal to the varden.

Well, she is one of the oldest elves still alive. Even if she focuses on her work she is still to know a lot. I doubt any religious dwarf would be of much help. They go on more of what they think is right more than what is actually right. Example, coral.

Re: rock of kuthian
i think gilderien the wise is older than rhunon.(the protector of ellesmera). arya or one of the other 2 elves that escorted eragon through the forest said that gilderien is the protector of ellesmera since Du Fyrn Skulblaka. before that the elves weren't immortal. the pact with the dragons made them live for ever. so gilderien is one of the oldest elves alive. if there is anyone that should know anything, it should be him

Rhunon was also alive when the elves weren't immortal, she makes a reference to how their behaviour has changed since they became immortal in a conversation with Eragon. She implies that she thinks the change is for the worse.

Re: rock of kuthian
Mkay, now that I have some free time, I can mention a theory I had earlier. (It was more of a random thought I had sitting in the comp lab at school, lol. ) Maybe the Urgals know where the RoK is. Think about it, Arya said it sounded familiar but she didn't know why. Maybe she read about it in a book about Urgals, and we know that there are plenty of books in Ellesmera about Urgals.

ruben-elda: where can i read it? i cant get another copy of Brisingr cause mine was pretty expensive and i dont need a new one..
Maybe the Urgals do know, but isnt it more likely that Arya and Oromis found the RoK familiar because they spent time with the dwarves? Arya spent 70 years with the dwarves right? Remember, its a ROCK and dwarves like rocks.

Re: rock of kuthian
Lol, I keep saying that, but nobody's listening. Not necessarily, because Eragon spent time with the dwarves and that sounds like something they would have mentioned. Although the word Kuthian does sound more Dwarvish than Urgal-ish. Won't know for sure until the last book comes out. Hurry up and finish the book, CP!!!

Re: rock of kuthian
Hmmm, maybe so... I dunno... It could be any or none of the above. Aside from the werecats, the Urgals are the only people who CP hasn't elaborated on their culture. So it could be either one of the two.

Me neither, but I'm not to worried about it.
From what I've heard, the released chapter is supposedly about how Angela is important, or some such thing. But like I said, I haven't read it myself so don't take my word for it.

All rumors of release dates out there are rumors and have a 99 percent chance of being completely inauthentic. When a release date is announced, it will be all over the place, including here with a snarky global announcement titled "Book 4 release date! No, really." or somesuch. ;]
