How does anyone find true name of someone?

torture them until they tell them! Or torture an elf until they tell them!

And if they don't know their true name and there isn't any elf who knows it...

maybe morzan knew murtagh's true name since he was his father and he accidently told galby and murtagh knew thorn's cuz he is his Rider and galby got in mur's head and found it.... idk... its confusing... lol.

I agree. I wonder what is Eragon's true name? In regards to Galbatoix knowing Murtag's real name maybe Morzan told him or he got it from Morzan's head. Thorn, well I suppose he could have read Murtag's mind and found out about the true name gave Thorn, that is if the riders give the dragons their names.

i think you're born with your real name. I dont think it's something where you can aquire one later in life. On regards to Morzan knowing Murtaghs real name. If Morzan had known it he would have told Galbatorix straight off and he (galby) would have bound Murtagh to his service straight away. The only other way is if Morzan found out in the time Murtagh ran away and the time Galby got him back. Which is impossible because Murtagh only left after Morzan died. So in short I still reckon that Galby got it out of the vault of souls. Because someones true name is kinda like their soul yeah? vault of SOULS kinda implies there are peoples souls in there........

Anyway I dont think the vault of souls would be like a LIBRARY. although Theres a high chance that theres a LIBRARIAN kinda person who like controls the whole place and stuff. I dont think you can go in and just ASK for somones true name. There would have to be something like a test.

uh... nope. Not even a theory at all. None of them could work, unless Murtagh already knew his and thorn's true name, so Galby went in his head and got them. Any other way, he could have found eragon's as well.

Well, galby could possibly have found Murtagh's true name by acident (VERY UNLIKLY), but you know that if youy know your own true name, you can force yourself to find it. That might be how, though i dought it myself.
