I want Sloan to die a slow and painful death, but I get the feeling we will see him in book 3 as one of Galbys loyal servants, possibly Morzan's replacement.

He'll turn from his betryral and die helping Roran and Eragon. Seeing how everyone here is wanting a slow death for him, I'll try to quote Gandalf from LOTR.

if arya isn't going to be the 3rd rider, than maybe murtagh 'll be rescued, and sloan will be the next rider, but i seriously doubt it.

He thought that he was doing the right thing for his daughter. He thought out that id he sided with the Empire that he and his daughter would have a much better chance to survive rather then with Roran and the others. He probably (Sloan doesn't have a lot of scenes that will help us understand him well) did this all so that his daughter would survive.

Sloan=nutcase. if you did not read correctly he would rather have his daughter die in the village then go into the spine where it was relitivly safe. but on the other hand and i hate to say this he was trying to act the best for what he thought was good for his daughter. i still hate his guts and untill he proves me wrong he is a filthy git!
