 Dragons: Mythology or Paleotology?
There is a poll on do you believe is dragons. Well, I do believe they once existed.
Should it be a study of mythology or paleotology? I have several theories on this and would love to hear some others.
First off. too many cultures from too many geographical locations have dragons in their legends and lore. These stories started before the trade route from Europe and China opened up.
I believe that dragons were some species of dinosaurs that had survived: just like crocs or sharks. They were probably hunted into extiction. Just look at what we've done to the Tazmanian Tiger.
The word dinosaur means "terrible lizard". 200 years ago, people would have never believed that dinosaurs ever existed.
One question that nags me is, what about the bones. Do you think that the bones were used for types of relics. Is that why none have been found? I don't think dragons flew or breathed fire.
If you have any info. let me hear it. What are your thoughtsl

Dragons could have existed, but not breathed fire. I think that there would have been more evidence of them if they were real, but they could have been a type of dinosaur i suppose. You should look at
http://www.dragonsarecoming.com it is a new show, but if you look closely, has some facts on whether dragons really existed.

Considering their existance in so many cultures, it is probable that they could have existed. Possibly, dragons were the dinosoars. I mean, isn't it possible that they all might have imagined them breathing fire? Or for all we know, they exhaled one of the many gasses that react with oxygen, and *did* breathe fire. All we have is bones, as far as I know; untill we find one's respiratory system, I am not crossing out the possibility.
But personally, I agree. Of the ancient cultures, too many have near identical myths. If it was a culture like the eldest members of an african, polytheistic church, I could understand. But these were, for then, civilized cultures, and the patterns are unlikely. Trade routes could have existed, but for someone to travel the distance in such ancient cultures they would almost need to ride on a dragon.

I totaly think dragons existed because of this thing on animal planet I watched a long time ago. Also cause I want them to have. also it would be way cool if dragons exist now and are on some island nobody knows of and I now that that sownds si-fi but mabye. but a more possible thing would be if they lived under ground in a cave. but I think a good question is are/were dragons magical (that is if they were real.)

The statement of “Dragons must have once existed because they are present in roughly every society around the world” is hardly a debate. Dragons have only been known as dragons since the Hellenic times 800 BC- 338 BC, and before such times the term was unknown. Even the concept of the general class relation between the Western and Chinese dragon lies exclusively in the phrase itself. There have been so many connections established between mythical beasts that Dragons have no traditional physical form, and nearly anything can be dubbed as a Dragon. For one, the Rainbow Serpent of the Aboriginal creation stories has constantly been called a Dragon, and the Quetzalcoatl (Amphiptere) from Mesoamerican religions has been sorted into the same category, when both are more directed as serpent deities. You will also find that many societies also have other fantastical creatures, where they enforce the recognition of native animals by creating chimera like species. Serpents and other reptiles were well renowned for either good or bad fortune, so why not make them more incredible than what they are? I guess a real good question would be, are Dragons Dinosaurs? Or are Dinosaurs Dragons?

i do but by the sound of that paragraph he doesn't and you seem to think about things like that or you are just so smart you say stupid things, i strongly disagree with you perspective and hope you see the light .....SOON!!!.... but if you do think there are still dragons around ... remimber camodo dragons, they are proaly a branch of the biger and more powerful dragons, like a evoled form, but i think dragons are still alive mabey on Earth or other plantets which is very possiable because NASA just found some kind of life form on one of the moons, and we cant be the only planet with life. who knows but im planing on searching for some kind of fossil one day. but you might be right about the dinasor part but ill look into it more.

A. Don't Double Post.
B. Bermuda is caused by pockets of gas rapidly erupting and causing waves to overcome ships, as well as the force of their surfacing breaking ships like stepping on a twig.
C. As for that earlier paragraph, I'm glad I now have a contact for scientology. A lot of polytheistic religions are barely considerable in this conversation (no offense to them). If I went back in time and started preaching about myself, the god of dragons, the people would believe it. The common occurance of the same or like god(esse)s is hardly avoidable. It is "civilized" cultures that worship gods and godesses completely different, e.g. Chinese and European cultures, that I hold as solid (not quite concrete) evidence of the rare reoccurence of such like beings.

i think dragons are real either kind or not beacuase of the basic one here many cultures have tales about giant lizards flying durring the night or seeing one durring the day did the people belive this person and thats why they recorded all this aichent information just so it could be told that there actually was dragons but of course sicence people everywhere think they never existed but many people agree other wise beacuase there is so much lore form diffrent no one could mistake a flying lizard form a fire breathing beast it all comes down to one thing dragons and they are in every single culture almost.

Very inciteful and informative. What is your opinion on the most common idea of what a dragon
is? I think we both agree that they were either a reptile or a dinosaur. Well, it is really hard to
distinguish the two.
You just didn't make it very clear on whether you believe in the existance of dragons of say
Anglo-Saxon lore? Just wondering.
What do you think of England's patron Saint, St. George and the dragon he slew?

Free4ever If having a point of view and a fair understanding of Dragon history throughout the world’s cultures makes one smart, then many may be so, but I can tell you now I am no brighter than the population of this forum.
Osthato Chetowä That is undoubtedly true, polytheistic religions have a common cycle of producing multiple gods and numerous chimera species. Considering the religious appetites of the Greeks (where Drakon, the root of Dragon came from), Romans, Mesopotamians, Mesoamericans, etc I would be surprised that a Dragon would not ‘pop’ up in their legends. Concerning Asian religions, Dragon is only a Western title that was used to connect the two languages, but in truth the Asian Dragon is something completely different.
Saphira75 Most Dragon concepts are easily related to being chimeras, a mix of natural animals that creates something new. It is not a matter of acceptance, scientist will believe if there is a substantial amount of evidence to prove the existence rather than the common “Dragons use magic and that is why we can’t see them” statement. Humanity has a long line of binding natural events that seem to be supernatural to the play of god or deities, and Dragons are frequently used to explain strange shadows, flames that burst from the ground, etc.
Dena Fantasyfan4ever There is no common design to what a dragon is, so I can not answer that question. When I think dragon, I think Wyvern or Western rather than the multitude of ideas that plagues the information stream. In such, I do not concern magic or a fiery breath with realistic ideas, so a Dragon would be put down as a reptile or dinosaur (dinosaur or dragon? The word dragon was around before Dinosaur, so wouldn’t that make dinosaurs dragons?). I do believe in Dragons, but the belief is not connected with fantastical beasts. St George and the Dragon was only a representation of the battle of Christian dominance over pagan religions, is it not?
If I missed someones comment or question, please forgive me, I get a bit lost when answer similar concerns throughout this topic. *dies from typing*

Broken Dragon= I guess I should have phrased things a little differently. I guess what I meant
to say was the common conception of dragons, thats why I brought up St. George.
Like I said, I don't believe they breathed fire. I believe that would be physiololically impossible,
from a medical view point. I can't say for 100% that I am correct on this, but thats just my
oppinion. I am a Veterinary Technician by profession, and I wouldn't be able to explain that
phenomonon.
I don't know if they flew or not, but again in my opinion I don't think they did. For one thing,
they were too heavy (probably) to be air born for any extended period of time. They may have
had wings though.
Maybe the young dragons could fly in order to perch on high as a protective measure. I would
think that they may have been canibalistic creatures.
I just wish there were more studies of dragons performed.

 To Dena Fantasyfan4ever
*Agrees* I have a friend who is studying Veterinary Science in University, and prior to that she worked in the local Vet surgery. She also commented about the issues that arise with dragon flight, but the construct of a Wyvern (two legs, two wings) could very well be considered realistic. Many pterosaurs could be dubbed as “Wyvern” because they are not closely related to either birds or bats, but they had similarities to reptiles. Some species were found to have tails, adornments, and other such dragon like attributes. So there is no telling what could have evolved from, or before, the “Wing Lizards”. Cannibalistic? I have never heard of such a habit being linked with Dragons, but that is a very good point.

you have a point there, as far as the fire thing. The only way that it could possibly breathe fire would be if it somehow exhaled a certain gaseous compound that had a reaction with air (or possibly another element that has been flitered out of our planet over time, that could combust with air). Both are extremely unlikely, conisdering that this would include their insides burning the oxygen as it entered also. (could be a seperate system for self defense, i guess, but all of this is unlikely) The overall existance of some form of large, airborne reptile is almost undeniable, but the presence of fire is only in some cultures. Back in those times they did not have high-tech devices so they could study the creatures, so it is possible that it could have been a longer tongue that someone(s) mistaked for fire.

This topic has been most excellent. One theory about flame was not concerned with fire itself, but with burning. Spiting some sort of acid/venom would still create the assumption of fire, but in truth, the term would be “burning like fire”.

Yeah, I saw that. It was very interesting. There is a sight on Discovery/Animal planet on dragons.
The scientist that was commenting on the documentary, he doesn't believe that dragons existed.
Of course I don't agree.
The whole concept about spitting venom, excellent theory. A lot of reptiles have venom sacks
in the back of their mouths. Just think of how much damage a cobra can do by spitting venom.
Also, the Komodo Dragons have deadly bites, not because of venom, but because of a mixture
bacteria. These bacteria are still unknown to scientist. There is an extensive study going on now
in order to come up with new antibiotics.
I just thought of something about the tongue being mistaken for fire. Think about it, when flame
is discribed, it's described as licking or a tongue of flame.
All of this has been very stimulating, thanks to all for your input. It's been fun.

you see the dragon was a belief inside a person that spread but i doubt it was real and if it was than it would be cool to find one!

on my topic 'does anyone beleive in dragons?' i said that i saw one once. it was a full moon that night. and the wind was blowing at almost huricane force! the trees were shaking very hard and some were about to break. i looked at the moon, enchanted by it's pale blue light. just then for a moment a gap in the gray clouds that were scatterd throughout the night sky a dragon flew past! gray with magnificent wings flew right over me very high up. but i felt the power and the gust of it's wings from all the way down on the ground.
dragons do exist....i know.

 I won't dispute your word.
Solembum 100%- I believe that dragons did exist, but they were probably hunted into extinction.
Now I never believed in UFO's, but I swear I saw one, thank goodness I wasn't alone. MY Mom
and my sister saw the same thing I did and it came on the radio that it was a weather balloon.
This was in the Smokey Mts. and there was no way that was a weather balloon. People still don't
believe us. So, I won't dispute your word.
Exactly where was it that you saw it, have you ever gone back to look for it? Why don't you
try to get evidence on video. You could shake up the whole world with that.
Oh yeah, one time I experienced a ghost. I didn't see it, but I heard it and felt it. I was laughed at
There were so many things that happened in that house, and a lot of people would see a man at the window, they were describing my great Grandfather who died at that house.
So I never belittle anyone who claims to have seen something. Just remember to be open minded and try to think of other logical explainations. But if I were you and I was positive of what
I saw, I would try my best to prove it. Especially something of that magnitude.
Good Luck!

well i'v expireinced all those things. and its not about trying to prove it, its about just how special it is that u saw it and nobody can take that uniqe memory. the fact that u saw one is somthing u can feel proud of. think to to your self "i saw a dragon. somthing in myth and tales of legend"
remember such things and you will start to notice just how often dragons fly around above us.
by the way this was in Florida.

Scientifically I could dismiss all of this here and now. But that is why I will never be a scientist. I am intriuged by someone claiming to have seen one, and the weather balloon incident is interesting. Claiming to have seem "all those things" is rather odd, but that isn't enough to disprove anything, as far as I'm concerned. For that matter, can you give us some detail on where you saw it? I go to florida a lot, maybe I could make my way there.

Wife of main hero (played by Richard Gere) died so has in bad mood and somehow he travels a looong time with his car but he don't remember and came in some city where mysterious things happens i won't say more you should try to look at it

What if some knight or what ever traveld to some where with crocs or aligators, they could have fought and killed one of them and said it was a dragon,

I think that dragons once existed, and maybe they still do, there is so much on our own earth they we do not understand yet. If there are dragons, they are likely to be in the wilderness somewhere.
Maybe they live in the ocean?

 Re: Dragons: Mythology or Paleotology?
Dena Fantasyfan4ever wrote: There is a poll on do you believe is dragons. What are your thoughtsl
...u dont know how a dragon breaths fire????
lol dragons DID breathe fire lol...they have glands in the back of their throat like a snakes but instead of venom, they carry napalm....they aquire napalm by eating platinum found in their lairs

Dragons are real coz if they werent we would of neva heard of them. I have a dragon in my room. That thing on animal planet is reli gd by the way and its a good insight but the wings are a bit out of proportion. Its is obvious they are real coz skeleton and fossils have been found that resemble a dragon speicies and the names like The Chinese Lung and the Amphertere(sp) and the european and all the names arent just all made up. And all the different images of dragons in ancient txts prove they must of had some existence even if they dnt now. also we havent explored the whole world and there are many vast areas in the world where large colonies of dragons could exist. eg North and south pole, Africa in the desrt. Australia, mexico or at least that big desert area near it. They could be anywhere. So i beleive they are real.
