His Dark Materials
I searched through here and I honestly didn't see a topic on these books, so I thought I'd put one. Forgive me if there is already a topic, because I just overlooked it.
His Dark Materials is a trilogy of fantasy novels written by Oxford scholar Philip Pullman. The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass are the three books in the trilogy in that order. They are claimed by many to be some of the greatest modern fantasy works and bring to mind several philosiphical and religious questions and ideas.
Now, I will only briefly mention this part, but here goes:
The biggest concern with this trilogy is the fact that the author, who is an atheist, wrote the books with in the mind set that these children are to kill God, or The Authority as it is called in the trilogy. This, naturally, has brought about several conflicts and disputes from the Christian religion.
A movie was made not too long ago based on the first book, The Golden Compass. Predicted to be a box office smash, it did not live up to the hopes and dreams of the company, who wished to build a franchise off of the trilogy. However, the movie is doing rather well overseas, so it is still debateable whether a sequel will be filmed based on the second book of the trilogy, The Subtle Knife.
Now, for my own opinions: I have read The Golden Compass and am nearly done with The Subtle Knife. I find the trilogy an enjoyable, suspenseful fantasy series that could catch a reader's eyes. The books have that great originality to them, allowing for reader's minds to journey to other places besides magical schools, forests beyond wardrobes, and other such magical lands. The characters are totally original and bring about a new sense of good and evil.
However, there is the concern of religion. Being a devoted Christian, I, of course, despise the message the trilogy brings for. But my beliefs are not persuaded by the books, so I continue reading them.
Overall, I find this trilogy a remarkable addition to what is the library of great fantasy literature. It has amazing originality and a deep plot. I would suggest this trilogy to anyone who would wish to read it.

I have written my own Eragon Eldest and Brisingr movie scripts, because the one Hollywood did was ruined. I have posted all of them here under FanFiction. Please read them and reply! I am looking forward to adapting the final installment in the cycle once it comes out! Thank you!

Re: His Dark Materials
That's a very interesting post, but I hope you understand discussion about religion is strictly banned, as it generally causes a lot of arguments. Just as a precaution, if anyone decides to turn this topic into a religious debate, it will be locked. Thanks.

Re: His Dark Materials
I know that reference to religion is banned, however, I find that it is not strictly banned because I've already gotten into a religious debate in the movie topic of The Golden Compass and no one has locked it. But I see your point. That is why I only briefly mentioned it, because it is, after all, the main theme of the books. Thanks

Re: His Dark Materials
Yeah, I was being pretty lenient in that topic, this isn't just a warning to you though, it's to everyone who posts here And it's not really a warning anyway, more like a just "be careful"... which I suppose is the same thing but oh well.

Re: His Dark Materials
Yeah, well, no one really seems interested to talk about this series anyways.

Re: His Dark Materials
Yeah, I thought they did really, really good on the movie. I wish that they'd make the sequels.
