Re: Who believes in dragons?
I personally believe in Dragons, and Fae, and the majority of such beings, there are also magick systems (not related to religion) that explain the fact that dragons do infact exist but they are on the astral plain and can be called to assist in magick and other such things, it is my personal belief that CP studied a bit about such things considering how wise he made dragons in the book, and the strong connection he gave them to magick in general.
In such systems Dragons are explained as very powerful, wise, yet somewhat frustrating to work with as they don't enjoy taking things entirely seriously for the most part, aside from having thought processes that are different than those of humans. But are also said to be wonderful teachers as long as you are patient.
The reason for dragons leaving our world should be obvious, they were made out to be villians and were attacked by humans seeking glory. perhaps if humanity comes to a point where they no longer seek to dominate and destroy anything that is different than themselves such beings may come back.. one can only hope eh?

Re: Who believes in dragons?
Basically it means that because humans tend to believe they are above all other life on earth, and try to bend everything to their will, and destroy anything that they view as a threat (dragons for example, and wolves, ect) dragons won't come back until thats changed to an extent where they could live as peacefully here as they can where they are. Look at mythology related to dragons especially in medieval-based times, dragons are always pictured as being slain by knights and are basically pictured as being evil, demonic creatures.
They are infact (from what I've studied thus far) much more akin to the dragons presented in the Inheritance series, with control over magick and the ability to communicate verbally(atleast mentally) with people. I just ordered a book related to communicating with dragons, if all goes well I'll keep everyone filled in on how it goes. (though the skeptics mind will say I'll simply be making things up XD)
*would swear an oath of honesty in the ancient language if he could find the word for truth*

Alot of dragons in books are described as wise and magical.

I think Ernest Drake's accounts are the best. Dragons really have no exact genus or species, but it is cool it study.

lol Birds already are dinosaurs. And scientists certainly can't breed them into anything more reptilian, though it is possible to genetically engineer them to resemble more dinosaurian creatures (though the knowledge of a complete genome and how to manipulate certain parts of it would be required, first).
As for myself (though I think I might have posted here before), I think dragons are scientifically possible (especially smaller ones), so who's to say they don't exist? They very well could. In fact, that would be awesome if they did or still do. I loooooove dragons!!!!!

I GOADED SOMEONE AT 12.23 AM EST!!!!!!! the last minute on my list!!!!
actually, they have found dinosaur DNA fossilized inside bones. also, they can make chicks with long tails and scaled legs. its called codominence and correction genes and deoxyriboneucleic acid and biolody and genetics and biology class with Ms. Denham.

Que?? You are strange.
I did not know they were that advanced already in genetic mutation of birds lol. The last I heard about this subject was a few years ago, so I suppose it has probably advanced since then. Also, when did they find DNA in dinosaur fossils? I have not heard of this yet!! Surely it would have been bigger news?

Re: Who believes in dragons?
I saw a video on youtube about something on the discovery channel and they found a real dragon fossil that was huge, but it was only the baby. There were also midieval pieces of burnt armor there from the 1500 or something like that. I can't remember, but it was awsome. It tells about how they evolved and everything.

There were some sketches that they found in various parts of the world depicting dragons and their differnt types on History channel. There was also a dead dragon body that was fished out from the depths of the sea in a video on youtube.

Re: Who believes in dragons?
The Discovery Channel dragon thing is not real, kvista. It's called Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real and is actually sort of a "what-if" documentary. (I own it on dvd and absolutely love it). I wish I could watch Youtube (I have dial-up), otherwise I'd be looking for cryptid videos all the time lol.
And I looked up what you were talking about, solembumer, but I could not find anything about actual DNA being found. Apparently, the most scientists have found is soft tissue within dinosaur fossils that may contain blood/bone cells with proteins, and possibly fragmented DNA. However, the researchers do not think there will be complete strands of DNA, and so far the main researcher (Mary? Schweitzer, I believe, though I may have her first name wrong) has not begun to look for any DNA yet. Other than that, there seems to be nothing else about dinosaur DNA. I couldn't find anything on the Discovery Channel.

The soft tissue contained fragmented DNA. Exactly. It is genetically possible to learn something, even from that. The problem is, it's so old they're afraid to break it up even farther.

Heheheh. Science is my favorite thing EVER. Even more than SF and rping, which is saying a lot. I am planning on going into a scientific field.
And, of course, seeing as I love both dragons and science very dearly, I have often thought of how dragons could have possibly evolved. In one planned book series I have (dunno if I'll ever write it, I just like planning) I thought up a whole plausible evolution for dragons. In my theories, they evolved from ancient, bipedal crocodilians in the Triassic Period. (The rest of the theory is very long lol, and further diverges into the various dragon species I concocted for my story. )

lol I've spent many years planning this series (first came into my head the summer before fifth grade, as a game I played) and I have spent a lot of my free time planning stuff, including the detailed evolution of dragons. It's a very fun pastime. Maybe when I get a laptop I'll be able to actually start work on it, seeing as I'll be able to type in my room any time I want... hmmm.....

That's very true. All cultures around the world have stories and/or legends about creatures like dragons, but most of those cultures have never heard of the other culture's legends/myths before. Go figure, right? (I am a 100% total believer...)

I don't think anyone fought a dragon because they would have kept some kind of trophy of their victory so they would have records of them and evidence, but so far no one found anything...

Re: Who believes in dragons?
Oo. Recently heard a cool theory for how dragons could breathe fire (I know a lot of them and made one up myself). Most of the theories involve the dragons producing methane/hydrogen/some flammable gas in their stomachs and storing it, and then when they breathe it it has to ignite somehow. The new theory I heard was that dragons could have hollow fangs like a viper's (as in four big fangs on the top and bottom jaw at the edge of the mouth) and an electricity organ is inside each one, so that when the dragon opens its mouth it can have an electric current run between the top and bottom fang on each side of its mouth. And then it breathes out the gas, and poof! Fire! Some people were testing it with fake wire fangs and a tube connected to methane, and the results were awesome. It was just really cool looking. Just thought I'd share.
(The show was Beast Legends on the SyFy channel. Was on after Destination Truth, which I love).

I like that idea. I also have a theory that they excrete venom from their primary teeth (the ones that point out of the mouth) and as the venom comes out, they light a spark from a pouch containing a piece of flint and metal so they don't burn themselves while breathing fire because it never actually touches their mouth.

Re: Who believes in dragons?
That's the theory from Dragonology, kvista. Is that where you got it?
My own personal theory involves the creation of hydrogen, which when mixed with oxygen is flammable (quite a few theories involve hydrogen or methane). At first, I had the dragons have four pairs of "spark teeth" (composed of metals) at the back of the throat which could be rubbed together for a spark. I think I'm liking the electric current through the four main teeth idea better, though. Maybe I'll change it to something like that for my books (if I actually write them lol). I also explain in my books how the dragons breathe water/ice, but that theory's not exactly scientific. There's some fantasy/sci fi elements, obviously. lol

Okay, technically it's not "my" theory, but I said that because I didn't feel like typing the whole thing out. lol However, I still think that it is a liable reason for dragons to be able to breath fire because evidence suggests, like with most reptiles, are able to excrete venom from their "fangs", so it's iiable for discussion.

Re: Who believes in dragons?
I heard on interesting theory not too long ago about how the gas produced from digesting food could somehow be compressed and stored in a special organ, and could be used to help the fly. Dragons don't have hollow bones (last I checked) and need to get their enormous bulk off the ground somehow. The gas sacks helped to make them lighter, in theory. Also, The gas could be mixed with oxygen and all that to produce flame, but the main idea was the gas could help them to fly. I'm not sure where I heard it exactly; I was emailed the link but can't find it now...

Re: Who believes in dragons?
@kvista: lol I know I was just wondering if that was the source you were referring to lol. And it is a pretty cool theory.
@sol: Hm. That might be related to the Animal Planet special: Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real. That's what they said in the show, at least (that the dragons produced hydrogen using gut bacteria and stored it in a special sac to help with firebreathing and lightness for flight). That's actually where I got the idea for hydrogen for my book dragons. They'd produce it the same way and store it in several sacs. I also added on it though: in the books, the dragons would also store hydrogen inside special sections of their bones, which are hollow, for added lightness. Once again, that's what it would be if I ever wrote them/got them published lol.
(I watched and own Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real. 'Tis a very, very good "mockumentary." lol)

Re: Who believes in dragons?
Thanks. This is fun to talk about, but no one is really possitively sure on how draons evolved to breathe fire, but I think it's just cool to imagine it.

Re: Who believes in dragons?
lol computers. Anyway no I don't believe Dragonology is actually real. They set it up in kind of a "mockumentary" format (as the Animal Planet special I mentioned was), where they pretend like it's real and present it that way just for fun.
Though that doesn't discount the possibility that dragons could have been real. I still think it's totally awesome how they're in almost every region of the world's ancient cultures: European, Far-East, Middle-East, African, Australian, North and South American... everywhere!

Re: Who believes in dragons?
Yeah, so what does that tell you? hey must have had some basis on the creature in order to make stories about them, especially if they all have practically the same theories...
