 Unexpected EmotionOOC:
This thread is mainly for myself, F-14 Ace, and Rathon. Others may join, but there is a plot in motion for this. Wait for either F-14 or Rathon to reply before posting, please. IC: Jia sighed and got to her paws. Sarai was curled up against the wall in a deep sleep. Now would be a good time to go hunt. Dear prince, I'm going to hunt now. We're low on supplies. Stay with Sarai until I get back. she told Ka, her Rider. She padded to the entrance of the cave and spread her wings, briefly pausing while she crouched down before launching her body into the sky. She soared for a bit, occasionally sniffing for prey. Finally she caught the scent of a mountain goat, and pulled in her wings to dive. She fell on her prey silently, calculatingly pulling in her wings to land on it precisely so she could latch her jaws around its neck and kill it instantly. She lowered it to the ground and sniffed it over, making sure it was a young one, devoid of sickness or possible injury. As she was doing this, the sharp crack of a twig in the silence made her look up. Her scales bristled at what she saw. Three Shrrg wolves peered at her from the trees, their cold amber eyes glinting. The brush of more paws on grass made her whirl around. Three more wolves were behind her. She was surrounded. She crouched and snarled, baring her fangs in warning. The wolf at point in front of her flattened its ears and snarled in response. They must be near starving to attempt attacking a dragon. She raised her wings and lowered her crouch, just as the lead wolf sprang. The other five attacked at the same time, coming at her from all sides. She touched River of Fire and bellowed the offensive Seal around her in a circle. The flames swept out of her mouth and scorched at least two of the attacking wolves. The leader clashed with her head, snapping its jaws inches from her eye. She growled and threw her head from side to side to dislodge him. He flew off and slammed into a tree, making the trunk shudder at the impact. Another wolf pounced on her haunches, and was quickly joined by another, then another, effectively pinning her hindquarters to the ground. She growled as she understood. They were not after scavenging the goat. She was the prey. She grit her teeth and bucked hard, but the three wolves on her flanks weighed her down too much. This was bad. For her, at least. She was still too weak from laying Sarai's egg. She hadn't recovered enough. The other two wolves that hadn't attacked yet leapt onto her back and shoulders. Her legs trembled and gave out, forcing her body down to the ground. But her neck and head was still free. She lunged around and latched her jaws around a clump of fur. She ripped savagely, pulling her head from side to side to inflict more damage. An ear-splitting howl of pain shattered the otherwise silent forest, but the now badly injured wolf did not retreat. The leader stalked forward with its head down, and for the first time she noticed how skinny it truly was; its ribs showed plainly, even through the thick fur coat, and its hips were ever more prominent. Desperate hunger gleamed in its amber eyes. She sighed in defeat and laid down her head. Then she remembered Ka. And her daughter, Sarai. Pain like freezing ice squeezed her heart. She couldn't let him die with her. She reached for the link that connected them. Protect Sarai. Stay away. she murmured to her partner-of-mind, and then completely severed their link apart so he would not feel her pain or know where she was. She didn't want him facing six fully grown, albeit starved, Shrrg wolves. He could take care of Sarai for her. She knew he would. Re: Unexpected Emotion Paito made his way through the thick forest, hacking away branches with his sword. Seroc was hunting somewhere nearby, but the young rider knew the dragon wasn't far away. Paito and Seroc had only arrived here the day before and both were eager to explore the area.
Paito paused in a forest clearing and looked up at the high mountain peaks soaring overhead. "I've never seen anything like it before." he said to himself. At that moment, however, a yelp of pain sounded through the forest not far away, followed by the sound of a commotion. Sheathing his sword and notching an arrow, Paito ran through the forest until he came to another clearing and he was both surprised and horrified by what he found. A dragon had somehow been overpowered by a pack of gigantic wolves and they were closing in for the kill. Reacting fast, Paito called out to his dragon companion, Seroc! Come quickly! I need you! Can I not leave you alone for even a minute without you getting yourself into trouble? Seroc replied. Seroc could sense where Paito was and he began flying with all haste toward his rider. I'm not the one in trouble! Just hurry! With that, Paito let his arrow fly. It whizzed through the air and embedded itself in one of the shrrgs, just behind it's front leg. Even with such a precise hit, the animal seemed unphased. In fact, all the arrow seemed to do was anger the horrid beast further. The shrrg charged toward the rider and in an instant it had pounced on Paito, knocking his bow from his hands. He wrestled with shrrg, somehow managing to hold it back with one hand long enough to pull his dagger from his belt. With a swift motion, Paito jabbed the dagger into the large wolf's throat and twisted. The beast staggered back coughing and bleeding until it finally collapsed on the ground and died. Seroc arrived overhead and circled once, surveying the scene. He could see a dragon lying on the ground and Paito attempting to defend the dragon. Seroc knew that Paito couldn't do it alone though. He folded his wings back and dived down from the sky, opening his maw and releasing a scortching hot ball of fire which exploded between two of the shrrgs, setting them ablaze. Seroc banked sharply and touched down, snagging of the predators with with his front talons and flinging it back at its companions. The tan lowered his head and blew a puff of smoke into the air, bearing his teeth and growling threateningly. Paito retrieved his bow and took his place by his dragon's side, ready in case the remaining _________________ And then Saphira ate Edward, Bella, and Jacob. Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia was startled to suddenly hear the distinct twang of a bow. Horror washed through her at first. Had Ka come to try and save her? But when she opened her eyes, it was not her Rider that she saw. It was a somewhat young human male. The arrow he had released hit the leader, who turned on him and attacked. She heaved against the five wolves on top of her, but couldn't throw them off. She watched as the human just managed to fight off the lead wolf and kill it with a dagger to the throat. Then she heard the unmistakable sound of a dragon inhaling to breath fire, and abruptly two of the wolves on her burst into flame. They howled and staggered away from her into the forest, desperately trying to put out the flames. Some weight left her back as the other dragon grabbed a wolf and flung it into its companions, knocking all of them off her. She gasped for a few moments, trying to gain her breath, then she spun onto her feet in one fluid movement. She staggered from fatigue, but held strong. Her lips pulled back in a snarl. One of the smaller wolves lunged for her throat, still desperate for meat. She caught it in her jaws and crunched down, snapping its spine with ease. She threw the carcass toward the other three wolves. They all backed away to avoid being hit. They glanced from her, to the Dragon and Rider pair, then to their dead companions.
With a gesture of movement that she missed, the remaining wolves retreated. She relaxed somewhat, then winced as the scarred side of her neck flared briefly with pain. One of the wolves' claws must have caught the scarred flesh. Her gold-amethyst scales bristled once. She drooped her head to the ground, turning her body slowly to face her saviors. The dragon was a bit bigger than herself, perhaps a few years older. Its tan scales seemed almost soothing. She looked from the dragon to the human. Thank you. I thought I was dead for sure. she panted. Her legs shuddered, and she allowed herself to sit on her haunches. I'm Johdzsia, but everyone calls me Jia. Who might my rescuers be? she asked curiously, catching her breath enough that she could tilt her head to the side. _________________ Eka fricai un Shur'tugal. Wiol ono Rest in peace, ILS. Re: Unexpected Emotion As soon as the wolves retreated and it became clear that the other dragon was not seriously injured, Seroc replied to her question, My name is Seroc and this is my rider Paito. It is a pleasure to meet you, Johdzsia.
As Johdzsia sat down from apparent exhaustion, Seroc then asked, Do you need any help? My rider and I would be glad to help in any way we can. While it was unusual for either Paito or Seroc to trust a complete stranger, it was clear that this dragon meant them no harm. Paito bowed respectfully and asked, "Would you like for me to heal your wounds?" _________________ And then Saphira ate Edward, Bella, and Jacob. The end! -How Twilight should have ended... Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia dipped her head to the pair. Eka elrun ono (I thank you). she murmured in the Ancient Language. She swayed again even while Seroc was offering his rider's help. Her vision blurred, and she had to shake her head to clear it. Y..yes. My scar has been reopened. she replied, her mental voice no more than a whisper. She twisted her neck to show the scarred side. The scar was obviously deep and old, pale white and rough against the otherwise somewhat smooth texture of her scales. A line of red traced through it, where one of the wolves had caught it with a claw. Just heal the break as much as you can. Don't bother with the scar itself. Perhaps then you can help me back to my Rider; he can heal it further. she said softly. She swayed again, and her vision darkened a bit.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Paito raised his hand to the wound and whispered a simple healing spell. The bleeding abruptly stopped and the wound closed up. The dragon appeared to be getting weaker by the minute.
"If you can tell us where your rider is staying, we can help you get back to them." Seroc felt a great sense of pity when he watched Jia. He guessed from hr size that she was even younger than himself. Still, it seemed that even a dragon her size should have been able to fight off a pack of wolves. Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia sighed in relief as the wound was sealed shut. She staggered to her paws, swaying heavily. Her vision was blurred and spinning, making her nauseous and dizzy. She closed her eyes and clenched her teeth to keep from throwing up. He is...a bit further up...in a cave. she murmured. She swayed again, this time almost losing her balance and falling on her nose. She sat on her haunches, her muscles trembling from fatigue. I...I can't fly...like this. she said quietly, and shook her head with her eyes screwed tightly shut. Let me try to collect myself a bit. Perhaps if I ate...I took down a mountain goat before the pack ambushed me. she said, her voice already a bit stronger than before. She considered calling her Rider to her, but she didn't want to panic him. Of course, her supposedly final words would scare the ever-living out of him anyway, so he might actually calm down if she reconnected her link to him. So that's what she did. She reached out to him and reestablished the link that held them together as Dragon and Rider. Ka...I need you... she murmured, and the almost overwhelming exhaustion in her words, and her tone, put emphasis on her urgent need.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka nodded to Jia as she left the cave, and glanced over at Sarai. The little dragon was fast asleep. "Come back soon, and be careful." He said, just as she leaped out of the cave entrance to hunt. Ka walked over to Sarai and sat down next to her and looked at her. He wasn't really looking at her, that's just where his eyes were. Actually he was following Jia threw her eyes. He was able to do this thanks to a Seal he had put on her soon after Sarai was born. He knew Jia would be weak so he liked to keep an eye on her when she went on hunts like this. He watched her take down the goat, a brief smile coming to his lips. There was a draw back though, he could only see, not hear. So he was confused when he felt alarm run threw her over their link, then he saw the Shrrg Wolves that had encircled her.
It all happened too quickly for him to follow. One moment she was looking at the wolves and the next she was on the ground. His eyes went wide with fear at her message. The only thing stopping him from rushing to her was the sudden feelings of confinement, nausea, and pain that hit him when she severed their link. He hadn't realized it until now but he was standing. He hit his knees and retched what little food was left in his stomach. Once he was done with that he tried to see threw her eyes again, but realized that he had used their link like a transmitter, so without the link he wouldn't be able to see. He pounded the cave floor with his fist, shattering the rocks. With a loud Reapric curse he headed for the cave opening. Just as he reached it he stopped dead. "Protect Sarai..." Jia's words echoed in his mind and he knew that he couldn't leave the newborn here alone. With a slump of defeat, depression, and anger, he made his way back over to Sarai and sat down. The only thing that kept him from going nuts was her presence. Normally it wasn't this bad, but normally wasn't being attacked by a pack of Shrrg wolves. Ka had slipped into a light, fitful sleep, resting against the rock wall. As soon as he felt Jia's mind again he jolted awake, all senses alert. "Jia! jia where are you! Are you alright! I'm coming!" Several emotions washed threw him, but the most predominant was joy and relief. He gently picked up Sarai and walked to the edge of the cave. "Hang on little one..." He said to the young dragon, and used their link as a guide to teleport to Jia. Ka had been so spot on with his teleporting, he was nearly ontop of her. The first thing he noticed was a dragon near by. The next was a man healing Jia's wounds. It took Ka half a second to piece together that they were Dragon and Rider and that they meant no harm, at least he hoped. Without a word to the two or Jia, Ka walked over and began healing Jia's wounds while gently feeding his energy into her. "Heaven Seal: Waise Heill" The white 5 ring seal that formed in front of Ka glowed brightly as tendrils of energy began to sprout from it, going to each of Jia's wounds and healing them. He payed no mind to the other two that was here, his main concern was Jia's well being. It didn't take him long to finish his work. "Are you alright now Jia?" He looked ad the dead goat on the ground. He had not caught a meal yet before this incident and was still hungry. Breakfast would have to wait. He knew that some of the shrrgs had escaped and that they may still be lurking somewhere nearby. Suddenly something caught the dragon's attention. A young man had appeared seemingly out of nowhere and was now healing the rest of Jai's injuries. Assuming this person was her rider, Seroc turned to his own rider and said, Well, i suppose we don't have to go and find her rider now. Paito nodded to Seroc and then backed away, letting the newcomer finish healing the dragon. He found it odd that the man completely ignored them but then again, the stranger was probably far more concerned for his dragon than about anything else. _________________ And then Saphira ate Edward, Bella, and Jacob. Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia winced as her Rider answered her call loudly. A headache set in. She swayed heavily on her paws, her vision darkening further. She had enough sense to feel Ka suddenly beside her, his own healing magics taking over Paito's in a moment. She closed her eyes and simply breathed for a minute, fighting back the nausea that wanted to spill from her gullet. Yes, a bit better. she murmured, opening her eyes. Alarm touched her for a second, then she saw her daughter cradled carefully in Ka's arms, still deeply asleep. Relief swept across her expression, but she hid it quickly so he wouldn't see. Her Rider couldn't know how deep her bond with Sarai was, not yet. Not unless he'd guessed on his own, and she actually thought he might have. The gold-amethyst lifted her head to her Rider's arms and nuzzled the resting dragonet with her snout. Sarai shifted in response, but didn't wake. She took a deep breath, then lifted her head further to look at Seroc and Paito. Thank you. Both of you. Seroc, Paito, this is my Rider, Reapric Prince Kale Hinote Karite of the land Dedarath. she said, grinning mischievously. She knew Ka hated it when she introduced him with his title. But you can leave the prince part out and just call him Ka. she said, her grin widening a bit. Then she turned back to her Rider. Ka, this is Seroc and Paito, my rescuers. she murmured, gesturing to each with the tip of her wing, and again dipped her head to the pair in gratitude.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka finished healing Jia in a short time and turned to the dragon and Rider pair. He had started to introduce himself but Jia beat him to it. He visibly twitched when he heard her use his full name and title. He glared up at her softly but didn't say anything. He made a small bow to the two in front of him. "I thank you for rescuing Jia. If there is anything I can do to repay you just let me know." He said with a small smile. And that's where it stopped. He had never been good around strangers so he wasn't sure as to what to say next.

Somewhere in the distance there was a rumble of thunder. "Oh, and maybe a place to stay for a bit wouldn't be too bad either. Seroc and I don't really have a home." Seroc glanced up at the sky at an approaching storm. The sky overhead was still blue but dark clouds loomed in the distance and were frequently illuminate with flashes of lightning. Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia smiled and playfully nudged Ka's arm when he glared at her. She looked at Paito, then at Seroc. Of course we can shelter you for the night. she said, eying the sky herself. She moved around to her Rider and lowered her neck so he could step over her shoulders and mount up. She glanced back at him and at the small black-gold dragonet in his arms. She didn't wake up? she murmured, trying to keep the anxious tone out of her voice. She looked back up at the pair then, Paito's words of having never been formally trained finally registering in her mind. Wait a minute. You've never had mentors? How long have you been Bonded? she asked, alarm touching the depths of her eyes. Abruptly a lightning bolt struck the ground just a bit to the north. The gold-amethyst jumped, startled. Okay, answer that when we reach the cave. she said, and jumped into the air with a deft stroke of her wings and a thrust of her hindlegs. She flew quickly to the cave, but she couldn't out-fly clouds before they opened up with a deluge of thick raindrops. She snorted in annoyance, squinting to see. She found the cave and headed for it like a bolt. She alighted in the cave entrance and padded inside so there was room for Seroc. She waited for Ka to dismount with Sarai, then she shook hard to dislodge the raindrops from her hide.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka mounted Jia when she lowered herself for him to do so. "No, she's still fast asleep." He said, looking down at the small dragonet he held. Ka glanced up at the pair before them when he heard they had never been trained, but he kept his comments to himself. When the lightning struck, he automatically held Serai a little tighter, as if trying to protect her. Jia said what he was thinking; they needed to leave soon. He held on his one hand as she jumped into the sky. Once the rain started, Ka leaned forward to protect Serai from the downpour, but then he got a better idea. His voice was inaudiable over the winds and rain, but suddenly a small blue seal appeared over Serai, and a larger one over Jia and Seroc's head which blocked the rain so they would be able to see better. Once they made it to the cave Ka quickly dismounted and put Serai back where she had been on the cave floor and turned around to face the other pair when they arrived. "So what was that about you two never receiving training?" Ka asked, sitting down against the cave wall.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Paito climbed onto Seroc's saddle and held on tightly as the dragon took off after Jia and Ka. The wind picked up a bit it was not a problem for Seroc. They reached the cave right as the sky opened up and it began to pour. As soon as they were on the ground, Paito climbed down off his dragon's back.
Answering Ka's question, Paito explained, "Neither of us has ever been formally trained by anyone. We've been on our own since Seroc hatched for me and we have had very little contact with others." Seroc curled up next to the wall of the cave. He was still hungry, having not had the chance to hunt. We do what we can to survive and we know a few tricks. However, I fear that if we ever met a powerful magician though, we would not stand a chance. _________________ And then Saphira ate Edward, Bella, and Jacob. Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia flicked her tail in irritation at the rain outside, then padded to her Rider and stretched out against the wall with her head in his lap. One of her eyes was on Sarai, the other was on Seroc and Paito. She was intrigued and saddened that they'd received no formal training. That was dangerous, to them and others. She glanced up at Ka, remembering when she had trained him, then back at the Pair. I've trained a few Riders, my own included. I could give you a few basic instructions to help you survive. she offered, lifting her head a bit to yawn. She glanced toward the entrance of the cave again. It will have to wait until the weather let's up though. I'm not too keen to teach anything in the pouring rain. she said, and snorted. It was then that Sarai stirred. Instantly the gold-amethyst's attention was on the little black-gold dragonet. Her daughter lifted her head, stretched, yawned widely, and opened her lavender-speckled-light-grey eyes. Good morning, chirped the hatchling happily, though the greeting was broken off at the end, and Jia guessed she had just caught herself from calling her 'mother'. Sarai got to her paws and tilted her head at Seroc and Paito, then padded for the human male and sat on her haunches beside him, stretching her neck up to push her snout into Paito's hand with a purr of content. Hello. My names Sarai. What's yours? asked the black-gold. Jia grit her teeth and tried to stay still for Ka's benefit.

He thought it was cute, the way she was just introducing herself. No hesitation, no fear, nothing. He grinned a bit, until he noticed that Jia seemed antsy suddenly. "We would appreciate anything you can teach us." the young rider explained. "I happen to know some basic spells but most of the advanced ones are beyond my grasp." As he relaxed Seroc's side, something brushed against his hand. Paito looked down and smiled in delight as the sight that greeted him. A little black an gold hatchling that looked to be no more than a few days old greeted him. "Well hello there. It is nice to meet you, Saria." the rider said cheerfully. My name is Paito Grimm. This is my dragon, Seroc. Turning to the tan dragon, Paito laughed, "I remember when you were this little, Seroc. You were much cuter back then. And a lot easier to hide. Hmmf! I do not miss being a hatchling. I prefer being able to fend for myself. the tan scoffed. Seroc glanced at the little hatchling and then turned to Jia. He asked, Is she yours? Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia's eyes glittered. It will be good to mentor again. I've missed it a bit since my last two students broke from me. she said, prumming a bit. And then Ka asked if she was alright. She hesitated. She watched Sarai as an excuse for her not replying right away. The little black-gold was purring against Paito's hand, complete trust in her eyes. Jia had to laugh when her daughter looked up at Seroc after his words, indignation sparking in the depths of her lavender-speckled-grey-irises. I can defend myself! she squeaked in defiance. The black-gold's scales bristled as she backed from Paito and crouched, a buzzing growl that sounded more comical than threatening coming from her throat. The gold-amethyst grinned, a chuckle rumbling in her chest, as the hatchling nimbly sprang forward and pounced onto Seroc's left forepaw, gently gripping onto it with her claws for balance. Sarai's body was almost vibrating from the intense purr that rumbled from her chest. Jia looked up at Seroc, brought back to present by his question. She glanced at her Rider. She'd never told him that Sarai was her birth daughter. She pulled her head out of Ka's lap and looked down at the ground, refusing to meet her Rider's eye. Yes, she is mine. And thank you. She looks more like her father, though. she said quietly, and tensed minutely. Ka wasn't an idiot, so she knew he'd connect the dots with that statement, if he hadn't already.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka nodded but didn't say anything. He had never taught anyone before, and wasn't sure he knew how. When Jia didn't answer him right away and used watch Sarai as an excuse to not answer, his concern only got worse. Rather than ask again, he watched Sarai too. When the little dragon growled and pounced on Seroc's leg Ka had to cover his mouth to stifle a laugh. However his smile, which had appeared because of his laughing, disappeared when Seroc asked his Sarai was Jia's. What startled him though wasn't the question, but Jia's answer. It had never really occurred to him to ask who the father had been. He figured if Jia wanted him to know she would tell him. but now that she brought it up, he began to wonder who she could look like.
Sarai obviously got her gold from Jia, but she was also black. There were only 2 black dragons that Ka knew of: Xelin and Shruikan. Xelin was dull black, not luster black like Sarai was, which left Shruikan. At first he rejected the thought, but he could think of no one else. The more he thought about it the angrier he became, but was sure to keep it hidden. Even though Shruikan was the only logical answer, he had to ask to find to be sure. "Jia...who is the father..." Paito removed some items from Seroc's saddle bags. He set his fiddle to one side and rummaged around until he found what he was looking for. "Ah, here we are." the young rider said, holding up some strips of dried venison. Paito tossed one of the strips of meat to Sarai, figuring she'd be hungry since they had not managed to obtain any food before the storm started. She opened her eyes into slits and met his gaze briefly. The carefully subdued anger didn't touch her link with him, but it was visible within his ruby red irises. The images from my memory. I'm surprised you didn't connect them, to me, and then to Sarai. she murmured, and looked away. Her shoulders were hunched, like they'd been a few days ago, when she was remembering.
- - - - - - - - - - Sarai grinned at Seroc, her lavender-speckled-light-grey irises glittering. She felt Paito shift and, from the smell, thought he'd tossed something in her direction. She crouched and sprang up, nimbly catching the venison in her jaws. She landed lightly and daintily ate the meat. She then turned to her mother, noting that she seemed distressed. She padded to Jia anxiously and rubbed herself against the gold-amethyst's right foreleg. Her mother purred and lowered her head down to stroke her spine, though her eyes stayed away from Ka. Sarai frowned. She was young, true, but she wasn't stupid. Stop acting like a scolded puppy, momma, and look at your Rider. He loves you no matter what. You should know that. she told Jia privately. Her mother met her gaze and smiled. Thank, dear one. she murmured, then lifted her head and looked directly at Ka, waiting for him to respond. Re: Unexpected Emotion When Jia told him the name he tensed. He stared at her as she looked away. He didn't even notice that Serai had come over to them. When Jia looked at him, she would see that there was no anger in his eyes, nor any other emotion. He had assumed this, but he had doubted it's truth. He didn't want to believe it, but what choice did he have? With a sigh he grinned and scratched her under her jaw. "I guess that would explain her ferocity then..." He said jokingly. Then he grew more serious. "But why didn't you tell me earlier?" He asked, sounding confused and a little hurt that Jia hadn't confided in him. He didn't expect her to come to him for everything, but this was something he figured she would tell him. Would want to tell him, and he was confused as to why she hadn't.

Paito replied as he removed Seroc's saddle and gear and tossed it in a heap in the corner. The rider sat back down by Seroc's side, looking out at the rain. She sighed, glancing away for a moment before looking at him again. I was...afraid. Afraid that you would be so angry at Shruikan for hurting me in that way that... she swallowed and her eyes shifted from his to her daughter. That you might hurt her. Your temper can be very vengeful and, to be honest, terrifying when I'm hurt. she said quietly. She looked up at Seroc as the tan male complained about the weather. It's regular for around here at this time of the year, so get ready to start loving it. she grinned. The grin fell from her face, however, when he asked how she had gotten involved with the black dragon of the Empire. Her expression became utterly cold. I didn't get involved with him. she spat. The scales along her neck and upper back bristled. It is a time that I would rather forget. she said stiffly. She felt something brush against her forearm and looked down at her daughter. She relaxed visibly, the lines between the scales of her face easing and separating. She lowered her head to her daughter and brushed her jaw down the black-gold's spine, purring gently.
- - - - - - - - - - Sarai arched her spine at her mother's caress, a cat-like pure of content rolling from her chest. She looked up at her mother, then at Ka. She padded to the Rider and nudged his arm with her snout, complete trust within the depths of her lavender-flecked-with-light-grey irises. Uncle Ka wouldn't hurt me. she said confidently, huffing from her nostrils. She nudged her head under his hand, crooning. I trust him, Momma. she chirped. Re: Unexpected Emotion Her reply struck a nerve with him. He knew his temper was...violent...to say the least. He had once sliced a man and a boy to literal pieces for touching Jia the wrong way, but to think that he would hurt Serai was unthinkable. To him, that would be like him hurting Jia and he would sooner chop off his own arm than do that. "Of course I'm mad Jia. You have no idea how furious I am right now, but I would never even think about taking it out on you or Serai." He felt Serai nudge his arm and he looked down at her with a smile. He began scratching them both just under their jaw lines. He heard Seroc's question and decided to answer it, unlike Jia. "Some time ago we were captured by the King and tortured for some time. It has left us scared in more ways than one." Was all he said. Ka was beginning to get tired of all this depressing talk, so he changed the subject. "So tell me Paito...how good is your magic?" He asked, with a slight gleam in his eye.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Seroc nodded in understanding as Ka explained that they had been captured by Galbatorix. These two must have been very brave and strong to have lived through such an encounter. Seroc figured it would be best to not linger on the subject any longer though. He now sat silnelty watching the others.
Replying to Ka's question, Paito stated, "I know most of the very basic spells, along with some of the intermediate spells and a couple of the advanced ones. I don't know anything real fancy though." Paito stood up and walked over to where he had dumped the saddle bags and retrieved his spell book. Turning to Ka, he explained, "I learned most of what I know from this old spell book I found." The young rider was a bit embarrassed to admit that he had learned everything he knew about magic from an old book but it was the truth. _________________ And then Saphira ate Edward, Bella, and Jacob. The urge to protect her is sometimes overwhelming. Please forgive me. she said softly, closing her eyes and huffing gently into his face. She laid her head in his lap once more, anxious and tense that he wouldn't forgive her but content that he understood and wouldn't hurt Sarai. She glared up at him as he semi-answered Seroc's question, but didn't comment. Her gaze swiveled around to Paito as the young Rider answered Ka's question. The ridge above her left eye rose. Really. That is impressive to have learned so much from a book. she commented absently. She lifted her head up so she could better look at the human male. You have a sword, yes? May I see it, if you don't mind? she asked politely, tilting her head in query. It was one of the first questions she'd also asked Nathen when she'd trained him under her as well.
- - - - - - - - - - Sarai purred and tilted her head into Ka's hand, closing her eyes with content. She felt her mother stir and lift her head away from the Reaper, so the black-gold hatchling took the opportunity to delicately step into Ka's lap and curl up into a relaxed, scaly ball. The young dragonet looked up into his ruby eyes, tilting her head to one side. Uncle Ka, why doesn't Momma like talking about Father? she asked innocently, speaking to him privately so her mother, Seroc, and Paito wouldn't overhear. Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka looked down at Jia with a slight grin to show he wasn't mad at her. "Of course..." He said quietly to her. He looked back up at Paito when he said that he had learned most of what he knew from a book. "Yes that is quiet impressive...you'll have to show me what you know once the rain stops." He said, nodding approvingly. He started a bit when the space that had been empty in his lap, since Jia had moved, was suddenly filled again. He looked down and saw that Sarai had chosen to lay down there. Her question wasn't exactly unexpected, but that didn't make it any easier to answer. "Well...to put it simply...Shruikan wasn't exactly the nicest dragon around." He wasn't sure how to word it without making Sarai think badly of her father, and without circumventing Jia's reasoning to not tell her. "What has Jia told you about him so far? I'll see what I can fill in..." He said. He wasn't exactly sure what Jia had told Sarai, since when it came to Shruikan, Ka tended to tune out what was being said.

When Jai asked to see his sword, Paito slowly pulled the steel longsword from the scabbard on his belt and presented it for her and her rider to see. "This was my father's sword before he disappeared. It's not much but it has always served me well. I have a matching dagger that goes with it." Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka sighed at the naivety of youth. She was speaking of things she knew little about. Ka knew that Jia had told her about Shruikan, but it was obvious that she had left some things out, but Ka wasn't sure what to fill in and what to leave out. "Sarai...I don't want you to think differently about Shruikan, but you should know that Galbatorix isn't the sole cause of the evil that he does. Before Shruikan had even heard of Galbatorix he used to enjoy messing with other dragons and people. He would torment, not torture, them. Galbatorix simply took his already slightly warped nature and made it much much worse. I'm not saying that it is Shruikan's fault, but you need to know that there is a part of Shruikan that is evil." Ka sighed. This he wasn't sure how Sarai would take this next part, or if Jia was listening in. He checked his blocks and hoped she hadn't found a crack in the somewhere. "When I first arrived in the land a long time ago, My parents, my brother, and myself were attacked by Shruikan. Later, when your mother and myself were taken to Uru'Baenhe told me that he killed them in cold blood and that he hadn't been under the Kings orders. It was also that time that he forced himself on your mother and good advantage of her, and made you." He hadn't noticed it but the entire time he had spent talking he was staring at the far cave wall. He quickly glanced at Jia to see if she had heard and at Sarai to see her reaction. He wasn't as worried about the other two, Paito and Seroc, over hearing him and he hoped Paito was keeping Jia occupied to enough to not worry about Ka and Sarai for now.

He nodded to Jia's request and assumed a defensive stance, holding his sword out in front of him tilted at a 45 degree angle. It was a stance his father had taught him and it was the one he always used. Paito lowered the sword and turned his head as Ka began to speak of Shruikan. Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia tilted her head as she inspected Paito's stance. It was firm, with little weakness that could prove fatal. She got to her paws and padded forward, touching her Changing Seal. Ka was fine where he was with Sarai in his lap, she didn't want to make him get up to tutor the human Rider. A gentle light flashed around her body, and when it cleared she was in her human form. Her waist length gold-streaked-lavender hair was in a plaited braid down her back to keep it out of the way. A leather belt and scabbard was around her hips, with the hilt of a sword grasped lightly in her hand. Instead of her usual light blue ankle length skirt she had loose black trousers, with gold silk blouse. She drew the sword. Its golden blade almost glittered, veined with red and black. She held it at her side, point down. Her eyebrow arched at Paito,"Care to spar with me, Shur'tugal?" she said, her lips twitching with a smile. She didn't notice the way that Ka glanced at her; her attention was on the human Rider. She tilted her head to the right, pulling at the ragged circular scar on the left side of her neck.
- - - - - - - - - - Sarai snorted quietly once Ka fell silent. True, perhaps, that Galbatorix 'enhanced' that side of him. Did Shruikan truly have a choice in the matter, though? I would bet that he didn't. Had Galbatorix left well enough alone or had been killed before he could get his hands on my father, Shruikan would probably be no more evil than you, or Mother, or any other normal person. If I could get my talons on that oath-breaker, I would rip him apart. she snarled, her voice dark and ferocious. There was no doubt in her tone that she would fulfill her threat if she ever met the King. Her muscles coiled, sliding powerfully underneath her scales for a moment, then she relaxed. She looked up at Ka, meeting his gaze squarely, despite her blindness. How do you know that Galbatorix didn't order my father to say that? He knows Shruikan's True Name, and most likely also holds his Heart. Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka sighed to himself. It was obvious that until Sarai actually met Shruikan, she would see him how she wanted; a noble dragon with good morals. Ka found the very idea of that laughable. "Becasue while your mother nad I were imprisoned in Uru'Baen he showed me, many times, the memory of him killing my parents. I felt his joy as he ripped my parents apart and gave my brother to slavers and his disappointment in not having found me. He played it over and over again for me, enjoying my screams of agony and protest as I watched my parents die day after day, hour after hour. Maybe Galbatorix did order him to, but he certainly enjoyed the hell out of it." His voice had grown dark with a deep seated sadness and depression. But during his explanation his mental block to Jia had slipped half way threw, meaning if she had wanted to, she could have listened to what Ka had been telling Sarai. This worried Ka a bit, as Jia had warned him to not share to much with Sarai, but he didn't know how much was too much. He figured this is what she would count as too much, and looked up at her to see if she had indeed been listening in.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia pursed her lips, studying Paito's form. It was steady and firm, with little she could point out to improve. She raised her sword, which she had yet to name, and then stopped. She could feel Ka's eyes on her back, worrying that she had overheard what he had told Sarai. She had overheard. She looked back at her Rider, her teal green irises blank of emotion. She didn't know what to feel. Relief? Anger? Sorrow? Her feelings were so jumbled up together that she couldn't distinguish them. Finally her shoulders sagged, and she released a weary sigh. I suppose she would have found out eventually, anyway. Better that she find out from a family member that will protect her than a total stranger that might be trying to hurt her. she murmured to him privately. She blinked slowly, and when her eyes reopened he would see warmth in them. You would never try to hurt her on purpose, I know that now. I knew it before too, but my instincts clouded my thinking. she smiled slightly, her eyes warming even further. She turned and took a step toward him, gently touching his cheek with her fingertips. I'm not angry, dearest prince. I just wish telling her wasn't needed at all. But she needed to know. she said, and sighed again. She turned back to Paito, tilting her head at him,"Do you know how to block your sword? I'd rather keep my limbs attached to my body, if you don't mind." she said, and grinned. She stepped forward toward him. She'd only be able to show him how, not actually do it.
- - - - - - - - - - Sarai couldn't help flinching as Ka told her of a time when he and her mother had been in the Capitol. She was quiet, not responding even when her mother obviously began to speak to Ka. When the gold-amethyst turned back to Paito, the black-gold hatchling finally spoke. He is my father regardless of what he has done or said, or will do and say. I can not hate him, and yet I do not love him. He simply is my father, no more, no less. Were he to die I would be sad, of course, but I probably wouldn't grieve for long. Death, to him, would probably be a release, and I would be glad he's out of the pain. she shrugged lightly. I'm neutral toward him, I guess. she finally said. She yawned, her tiny teeth flashing in the dim light. She curled into a tight ball in Ka's lap, shuffling her wings lightly. When do you think I'll be able to fly like Momma? she asked abruptly, her voice sleepy. Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka looked up at Jia's emotionless eyes and winced a bit. He hated that look, only because he couldn't read it. He wasn't sure if she was upset with him or what. He watched, listened, and waited, and was relieved when he saw that she wasn't mad at him. "I wish it wasn't too, but it's better for her to know the truth than have some figmented image of him that would only serve to misguide her." He sighed a bit and looked down to her shifting in his lap. "I don't know...I think Jia could already fly when we met...but I can't really remember." Dragon age lines was a lesson Jia had skipped over with him, either that or he had been day dreaming that day. "Have you tried flying lately?" He asked, scratching under her chin.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia sighed in response to her Rider but didn't respond. She set her feet and readied her sword, her teal green eyes glittering. She stayed still for a moment, then sprang to his left, lashing out at his arm with the tip,"Be light on your feet, Paito." she reminded gently as he brought up his sword to block. Instead of locking blades with her and combating with brute strength, he could have easily dodged behind her and then struck. She sidestepped past him and whirled around to hit him in the back with the pommel of her sword. She sprang back, twisted, planted her feet on the cave wall behind her, and pushed off. She somersaulted over Paito's head and landed, facing the direction that she had come from, sword ready.
- - - - - - - - - - Sarai snorted softly. I want to, but Momma won't let me. she huffed, glaring halfheartedly at Jia's turned back. I could; I'm strong enough. she said defiantly, and coiled her muscles as proof. Powerful strength writhed underneath her black-gold scales, rippling her hide as the muscles moved. Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka could feel her muscles coil and recoil under her skin with surprising strength. She was indeed very strong, but Jia knew what was best, but he was feeling mischievous. "I agree, you are very strong. I'll tell you what. Once this rain lets up, and Paito and I practice with our spells, you and me can go to the top of this hill and see if you can really fly. But don't tail Jia, she'd lick us both from head to foot if she found out." He said grinning down at Sarai. He was alreading planning excuses he could use, as well as what he could do if Sarai was in trouble. Plan for plans, and plans to back up those plans. He kept all of this hidden from Jia, but with the amount of thinking he was doing, it was hard to keep all of it hidden.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Paito quickly turned and swung downward. His attack was parried off and he ducked to avoid a counter attack. He managed to avoid a rapid succession of blows that followed. The young rider rolled to the side and swung for Jia's legs.
Seroc watched with obvious amusement as Paito fought against Jia. A crack of thunder outside caught his attention and the tan dragon looked outside at the still raging storm. Re: Unexpected Emotion Jia jumped easily over the blade and then lunged at Paito's back, giving him a hard rap in between the shoulder blades,"Only bare your back to a corpse." she said firmly, then backed off and repositioned her feet. She darted lithely to the side, dancing almost like a snake around Paito as she rained attack after attack and blow after blow on him, not stopping or hesitating for even a moment. Though apparently he was fitter than her, for she was tiring out first. Goes to serve; she was a dragon that hadn't been taught swordplay ever since she could hold a sword. Finally Paito bested her, the tip of his sword flicking to her throat. She licked her dry lips and swallowed, then smiled at him,"You are very good. Don't discredit yourself so quickly." she said in between gasps for air. She sheathed her blade into the scabbard at her hip and backed off, then grinned at Ka,"Your turn, dear prince. If you're up to it." she said this to Paito.
- - - - - - - - - - Sarai beamed up at Ka, eagerness sweeping through her. Okay! she chirped, and nuzzled his neck gently with her muzzle. Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka sighed a bit and stood up, casuing several bones and joints to crack and pop as he did. Sitting on stone for a long time with a small dragon on your lap was just moved to the 'bad idea' list for Ka. Once he finished bending and twisting to make sure everything worked, he looked at Paito. But before he could say anything, the rain outside abruptly stopped. "Well...look at that." He said, walking over to the cave entrance and peering down. Down into a lake. A lake? "Um...hey guys. Wasn't there land below when we got here?" He asked, motioning for them to come look. "Cause if there was, there isn't now. The rain storm had actually flooded the entire area up over the trees, making it seem like a lake had swallowed up the trees and ground. "Well...at least it's over." He said. "So Paito, what do you want to do. Practice magic with me, or get out, get some fresh air, and take a break for a bit?" He asked, turning and facing him with a slight smile.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Sarai sat against the wall and watched Ka and Paito, her eyes shining. She looked over at Seroc, sudden mischief playing across the features of her face. She crouched and wiggled her haunches, then launched herself at Seroc. She hit just above his shoulder, exactly where she had wanted to. She scrambled up and then sat on his back, the tip of her tail twitching. I bet you can't knock me off. she challenged the tan dragon with a wide grin.

Re: Unexpected Emotion With a quick nod to Paito and stood to face him in a typical fighting stance. "I want to see the strongest projectile spell you have." Ka said. Under both of them a large purple Seal appeared and glowed for a moment. Once it stopped the sound of a small bell sounded once and faded. "Don't worry, it's just a barrier so our attacks don't hit them by accident." He said, and gave Paito the 'bring it' gesture.

Re: Unexpected Emotion Paito thought for a moment. His knowledge of projectile spells was lacking. He had not used magic all that much, mostly just to block attacks or start fires. Picking up a small stone from the floor, he held it in the palm of his hand and muttered, "Stenr reisa thrysta!" launching the rock at Ka.
Seroc grinned slyly back at the hatchling. Perhaps I can't. However, I could always just roll over. With that, the tan dragon suddenly rolled onto his side. He didn't roll all the over though fearing he would crush Sarai if he rolled on top of her. Re: Unexpected Emotion Ka side stepped to avoid the rock that Paito launched at him. It was a good attack, for hunting deer. "Ok, how about you show me your strongest attack of any kind, projectile or otherwise." Ka said, and readied himself for what ever Paito would think up.
