I was on the topic about Eragon's true name when I realized something... When Murtagh was talking to him in Eldest he said that Galbatorix knew their true names. If he had been talking about him knowing Eragon's true name that would mean that Galby would just force Eragon to come to him. I don't think that's it. I think Murtagh was talking about Thorn's and his true names. That means that dragons have them to. So here's a question for all of us Eragon buffs, what is Saphira's true name? Another question: will she have to speak it at the Rock of Kuthian to help Eragon to open the Vault of Souls? I dunno. Anybody got any ideas?

well, yes i think saphira has a true name, but no, i do not think she will need to help eragon. solembum simply said speak your true name, so saphira probably has nothing to with the vault of souls thing.

well, remember that Saphira and Eragon are linked in the most extraordinary of ways. I think, more than likely, that she WILL need to know her true name to help out Eragon. I think then, the bond between them will be complete and they will truly become one.

sorry to disagree with you, but i think eragons true name will be more important to the story. if they tell hers, it would likely not have too much importance. just my opinion...

I think Saphira does have a true name, but I dont think she will say it because she CANT say it. Dragons can only say it through their mind, remember? Maybe she'll speak it to the VOS through her mind. I dunno.

It's doubtful that she will say it through her mind. As I have suggested in the RPG forum, dragons may have their own spoken language, just like the dwarves and elves have their own language. So I still think it is a possibility that she will say it to open the VoS.

Say it in Dragon Language? But at the back of the book where it says all the language thing, there is no dragon language. But it could still be a posibility.

aye, you're right about there not being a dragon language in the language appendix. But keep in mind that it's only phrases Eragon and Saphira have heard. Saphira has never said anything in the possible dragon tongue, therefore the dragon language could still exist despite it's absence in the appendix.

no. more like the opposite, elves came from far away, as did the ancient language, which came with them to alagaesia, which is the dragons home.

Didnt the AL come from the other language, the most powerful one? From the ?gray? people? Im not sure, but what Orimis told Eragon about the Ancient Language. I think if the dragons communicate it is not in a way any of the human/dwarves/elves can understand. But everything has a true name right? So Saphria has to have one too.

Yeah! They Ancient Language was from the Grey Folk I think.

The ancient language did come from the Gray People, who were the first elves to come across from wherever the elves came from.

I have proof that there is a dragon language! Look on page 51 in the hardcover edition of Eldest. Here is the quote:

"The dwarves began to sing together. Weaving as she stood, Saphira hummed along, punctuating each line with a roar. Eragon opened his mouth to join in and was shocked when, instead of words, out came the snarling rasp of a dragon's voice. That, he thought, shaking his head, is going too far.... Or am I just drunk? He decided it did not matter and proceeded to sing boisterously, dragon's voice or not."

See! If there wasn't a Dragon Language, neither Saphira nor Eragon could have been able to sing that song at the party! And we know that Eragon was not drunk after that party, because Saphira was the only one who woke up with a headache! This can only lead to one conclusion: that Saphira was singing the song in... the Dragon Language!

i think Saphira knows both her own and Eragon's true names. Her minds cannot be broken into i think she knows Eratgons' name but will not tell him incase his mind is broken into, atleast if she knows it shew can help Eragon when he needs it and stop other people from finding out what it is. As for Saphira's name i think that it has something to do with flying.

I don't think she would keep something this important from him no matter what.

As for Saphira's true name having something to do with flying, I think that is a good theory because Oromis said in Eldest that he had rarely seen a dragon so suited to the sky. So I think you are correct SBS.

Oh, yeah, alagaesia.com has the release date for the third book and now there's going to be a fourth book. Instead of the Inheritance trilogy, it's going to be called the Inheritance Cycle. That would explain some things.

Not neccessarily flying. But it could very well be something in the Dragon Language.

let me check *walks off to get eragon* well, i didn't see it. it says that all elves know theres, and human riders went on quests to find theres, or got an elf to tell them , but it says nothing about dragons. all animals understand the AL to a degree though

You can't call dragons animals. They are just as intelligent as any of us; they are a people, not species of animal.

Hmm...I dunno. A rider is magically linked with his/her dragon, and that link runs very deep. It is a posibility that Saphira has to say it too, in dragon language.

I think Saphira's ame has something to do with the sky and the colour blue, Oromis said that she was extrodinary flyer and she loves flying so i think it has something to do with flying. Oromis and Galdrear know Eragon and Saphira's real name so i think they get told by him when they r on their deathbeds maybe. she wont be ale to say it out loud as she said to ERagon wen he asked her about tlking (i think) her mouth is not built for human speech.

I read somewhere on alagaesia.com that Galby might not be killed, he might just get banished or something. I don't think that's going to happen though. I think Eragon, Saphira, Shruikan, and Galbatorix are going to get into this massive fight and Eragon kills Galby which causes Shruikan to suicide.

I think he's going to heal her as soon as he or Saphira remembers. But its very likely she'll die before that. Back to the topic, Saphira's true name is probably something in dragon tongue, which (I think we agreed on) existed.

Say, that's not a bad idea. Actually, no. If Eragon had, accidentally, given Saphira her true name (Saphira ), then he would have total control over her. He doesn't have total control over her because not only did Saphira kidnap him and not let him get to Garrow in Eragon, but many of her actions sparked arguments between them, like when Trianna hit on him in Farthen Dur, Saphira became all menacing and stuff and drove Trianna away from any relationship with Eragon. I'm pretty sure Eragon wouldn't have made Saphira do that.

Brom said in "Eragon", that ALL things (animals and people, magical beings and non-magical beings) have a true name, so it's just logical reasoning that makes us believe that Saphira has a true name. Go read Eragon again and you will see what we're talking about, just pay close attention when Brom explaining the rules and properties of the AL after Eragon kills the 2 Urgals in Yazuac.
