Post Homeschooling
I just wondered how many people here are homeschooled. I am, and i like it, though this year's curriculum isn't working very well. My sister will be going to public school this year, though. Do you homeschool? Did you used to? Do you like it?

I think there's already a topic like this, but I suppose a fresh one can't hurt seeing as most of the people from the old one left already.

Anyway, I've always gone to public schools, and the only homeschooled people I know are on SaphiraForums. I would completely hate to be homeschooled, I like seeing my friends at school every day (although I go to sixth form college now anyway) and being in the house would drive me crazy-seriously. Even being here at weekends or after college drives me mental, I can't wait to move out.

But homeschooling is fun! You don't have any homework, because all your schoolwork happens at home, and you get to make your own schedule!

I'd still choose public school with all the homework and fixed schedules over spending weekdays at home with my family. Anyway, I get free periods now I'm at college so I can go to town or friends houses or whatever during the day.
I also think public school gets you better prepared for any higher education or work, and (I'm not saying it's like this for all homeschoolers) I'd probably have hardly any social life if I was homeschooled.
However, the fact that I hate spending time with my family rules over everything lol.

Actually Homeschoolers are more likely to do better. I find it easier to study on my own schedule. Also most, if not all, of the Homeschoolers I know that have been through collage, and gotten a minimum of two degrees. A lot of Homeschoolers graduate early, because of the effort we put into our work. Also depending on the Homeschool group you join, you get to do a lot of stuff with other Hoemschoolers (such as Homeschool day at Sixflags, with buy one ticket for cheap, get one free.)

Ok, I'm just saying that my general preference is always public school. And saying homeschoolers do better is, as you say, a generalisation. I've been in public school all my life, and have just applied to Oxford and Cambridge Universities (admittedly, I probably won't get offered a place, and if I do I will probably turn it down because I'd prefer to do graphic design, whereas I'm applying for pure maths at those two, but I'm sort of getting off topic now). I also put effort into my work, and prefer having the freedom being out of the house.

Post Re: Homeschooling
There are pro's and con's to both sides.

I hated homeschooling when I was younger like I said before, because I never had a social life until I found my own alternatives.
Now that I'm older i realize that it was nice to be homeschooled. I am seen as much more mature than the other kids my age, I got to graduate a year ago where as if I was in public school I would still be a junior. Its not the best choice for all though.
A con of my experience would be that spending so much time at home then has made me very distant now. I'm never home by choice except to sleep. My relationship with my family is very strained because they are having a hard time accepting my independance after so many years at home.

Like I said, pro's and con's. Its different for all.

I'm homeschooled to, kind of actually. I attend a K-12 online school. I like it alot, I have alot of free time and I can sleep in, which is the single greatest thing about it. I also get to spend all day on SF, again sorta, when ever my mind becomes to cluttered and I need a break I get on here and go through my posts.

I like school. You have drama classes, excursions and things like that. And with everyone else there. You can take photos of stupid things you do (if you have a camera to sneak in).

Yeah, but when you're at homeschool, you're not up and in it. And what point is something like drama class when there's no one to compete against? Same with sport.

Well, I'm not a sports person so I don't give a hoot about that. and there are plenty of students to compete with in my we have well over 300 hundred kids attending from the comfort of their own homes

We compete against each other (other homeshoolers, and siblings; a lot of us strive to be done with school before those in the public schools. That is our main competition.
There are a lot of schools that enjoy having homeschoolers on their sports team... I can name several. And we also have our own teams.

*clears throat* get some popcorn this may be a little long. I've given K-chief the whole rundown before, so I'm copying it from that convo.

Keever wrote:
I have reason to disagree, kotor. I happen to know alot of people. Just because we don't spend the day crammed in a room with 15-50 other students doesn't mean we don't meet people. In my town there are over 40 other families that world school (sounds less sheltering than homeschool) and we get along great.
For fun: We don't sit in our living rooms all day with our parents and text books, we do, in fact, have ski trips, field trips like regular schools, sports teams including volleyball, hockey, basketball, and baseball, drama class, Swim meets and various other activities. And its not like we cant get our drivers licenses till we move out, we can go to movies and such on our own.
We can get jobs just as easy as you publics can, and more often than not, we can maintain better eye contact and stutter less when talking to an adult than a public school attendee can.

And now to add on to it:

With my drama class I have done at least 5 productions and not just in our small town. We took our best one to the big city and even had to do it a few more times cause we kept selling out
As stated above, we have several sports teams, not of which have names except for the "Home E's" but are excellent players non the less
Not all of us are sheltered nerds as believed by most people. In fact nobody has ever guessed that I am homeschooled. They believe I go to another school in town, until they actually do ask and I say that I'm homeschooled.
I dress just like the rest of you, and most likely seem more normal than some of you school kids (from what I've seen of pictures of members on here, I am fairly certain of this)
We are not always glued to our books. We do get out and do stuff. I got my drivers license 20 days after my birthday and since then have been doing my own things with me friends that go to public school in town.
I am not sheltered. I have gone on a date (which is more than some of you can say) and I do not stutter. I'm not a math whiz by any means, but I know how to spell pretty good. Grammar is not something i nit pick over either.
I do have friends, many of them.
And as of now I am planning my graduation. I am 17, but I'm only graduating early because my birthday is in the middle of the year (january 1) and my mom started me at school when I was 4 because I would have to wait for my siblings to finish their schoolwork till I could play with them and was a really **** little kid when I wanted to play (seriously lol)

To sum it up:
I'm not a perfect student
I get out and have friends
I have all that activities you school kids have
and I'm not as nerdy as alot of school kids are.

*breathes deep* Thank you for your time. I am done.

(this is by far the longest post I have ever had on here)

Hm... I never knew more than half of that stuff... see, the only homeschooled people I know are on Saphira Forums, so... yeah. Thanks for the insight though, I feel like I know more now.

So, if you had a choice, would you choose to continue being homeschooled? If you weren't graduating, of course.

Yes and no.
Yes because its easier for me to learn at my own space and skip ahead and take breaks whenever I want and we can take vacations in the middle of the school year.

And no because as it is now I'm teaching myself because my mom is too frustrated with me and we don't think the same way so everything she tries to explain goes right over my head. Since I'm teaching myself with my textbooks I know for sure that there are things I'm doing wrong, but I'm too proud of being independent that I don't want to ask her for help. Its a major flaw in my attitude but I just can't get over it.

 You also know how to place an argument better than most homechoolers.

Most people who are home educated don't live a sheltered life. In my family we are more of the family type people, and not the people person type. Not exactly sheltered, but not with a bunch of friends either. How we do in our schoolwork depends on three things: the curriculum, how we're gifted, and our diligence. It helps to have parents help, but it's not necessary, depending on the curriculum.

Post Re: Homeschooling
Homeschooling sounds like a dream to me.
I go to a public school.
Most of the kids at my school are total hicks (a.k.a. the guys like big trucks window-deep with caked mud or smoking or just getting into fights for the heck of it, and the girls have sex or get pregnant before they're fifteen, in most cases), the school has some crappy points that it has the money to fix, but is too frugal (or too proud) to want to fix, and half the teachers don't give a damn about the kids, only about the rules and regulations they dole out.

the only good point, i guess, is that we're one of like two schools in Indiana that has open-campus lunch where we can go to like Arby's or McDonalds for lunch instead of having to eat the crappy cafeteria food.

All in all, I still think homeschooling would be better.

I think you'd probably like being Home educated. Not to be boastful, just to say an advantage of being Home educated, I find that I receive more complements about looking people in the eye than I've heard about anyone else put together!

Keev:: Not everyone's got those opportunities though ;)

Morwen:: Eh?

"Hey you, you look me in the eye pretty good!"

Explain.

When I'm in a group of people I get used as an example a lot about eye contact, because I do it. That's one way... Other people tell me they like the fact that I look them in the eyes, and not at their feet...
