Her bond with Groen Een is deeper than that of other dragons and riders, as both Serena and Groen Een are trying to be closer to each other all the time. As a result, they are at the stage where they are beginning to take on each other’s personality traits, despite them being bonded for just over two months. She loves to go looking for adventure, and can be quite a handful. Serena is logical, and always thinks through a situation rather than diving in head first. She can analyse an opponents fighting tactics within minutes of fighting them, and sometimes before that if she knows what sort of personality they have. Serena is the sort of person who enjoys making friends, but can be angered easily. If she gets very angry with somebody, she will easily lose control and try to kill them, but she can regain control of the situation quickly before it gets out of hand. She prefers to be happy and content, and rarely ever frowns. People who know her enjoy her company, though her enemies would describe her as a demon, or as someone who could scare away a lion with a single word.
character history:Serena was raised by dwarves all her live, as they found her as a baby outside Tronjheim. When she was 10 years old, she decided that she would leave and find adventure, so, at the age of 11, she left Tronjheim, to go and find her fortune in the world. She found a small, deserted cottage on her travels, and decided to make it her home. She made it fit for human habitation, and continued on her way. She was going to come back to the cottage as soon as she had found enough food and water to sustain her for a few months. Winter was approaching, so she knew she must stay at the cottage until it had passed, else she risked freezing to death. It could easily get to -10 around those parts, especially as she was so high up.
When Serena was almost 15 years old, there can a day when she was out gardening behind her cottage, when she heard a horse approaching. She stood up, wiping her hands on the apron she wore as she did so. She peeped at the horse and it’s rider. The man was obviously a trader. She hid, she didn’t trust traders because of a few times they had mistreated her when she was exploring as a little girl. The man was carrying a large parcel on his back, and he seemed to be in a hurry to get somewhere, so he must have stolen it. At the moment the horse reached the house the poor thing collapsed. The man fell with a yell and the parcel fell from his back and rolled away into a hole. He didn’t notice it was gone. He didn’t check to make sure it was still there. He just kicked his horse in the stomach and started running. He was too preoccupied to notice Serena standing there.
When the trader was out of sight, Serena went over to his horse. It was a black stallion, and seemed out of breath and tired, but he was still alive. Serena fetched a bowl of water out of the cottage and put it down next to his nose, where he could get to it easily. She then went over to the hole that the parcel had fallen down. She fetched the parcel and brought it back to the cottage, noting with satisfaction that the stallion was drinking the water she had put down. When she got to her bedroom, she put the parcel down on her table and carefully unwrapped it. It was a smooth emerald green stone, shining as if it was polished. Serena didn’t have a clue what it was, but she liked the stone, so she left it on the table and went to check on the stallion. He was standing now, but seemed to be lost, as if he didn’t know what to do. Serena led him into her back garden, where he gratefully started grazing. Serena would be able to watch him from her bedroom window, so he was Ok for the time being. She went and fetched his now empty water bowl from where she had put it down for him, and took it into her house to refill it. As she was doing this, she noticed a movement in her bedroom. She put the water on the side and went to make sure nobody had broken in. Nobody was in her room, but the movement had looked like it had come from the egg. She watched it for a few minutes, to see if it would move again. It didn’t. Serena decided it must have been her imagination. She went back outside with the water and placed it near the stallion, where he could easily see it was there. “That stallion must have a name.” she said to herself as she got ready for bed, having just taken off the stallion’s bridle and saddle. “I’ll find him one tomorrow.
The next morning, Serena was woken by a loud splash coming from the back garden. As she got up, she noticed that the stone was gone. All that was left of it were small green shards. She would have to clear that up later, when she was fully awake. Serena hurried outside. The stallion’s water bowl looked as if something had fallen into it, though there was nothing there now. The stallion was still asleep, so it couldn’t have been him. She shook her head and went back inside with the water bowl, so she could fill it up again. As she entered the kitchen, she saw a small green thing trying to open one of the food cupboards. The thing looked like a dragonet to her. Then she remembered, she had seen pictures of the stone when she had visited one of the dwarf cities. So she knew that the stone had been a dragon egg. Now that Serena had a clearer idea of what was trying to eat her food, she found the bravery to approach the tiny creature. She held her right hand out to it, and the dragonet pushed it’s head into her palm. Serena felt cold shooting through her from where the dragonet had touched her skin. As suddenly as it had started, the sensation stopped, and her hand dropped to her side. The dragonet went over to her and snuggled up to her leg, falling asleep.
Silently, Serena stood up, careful not to disturb the sleeping dragonet. She filled the water bowl and took it out to the stallion. He was awake now, and let her come over and stroke him. She gave him a carrot from one of the cupboards, and searched through his saddlebags. All she found was a bow and a quiver full of arrows, and a lump of mouldy cheese. She got rid of the cheese, but the bow and arrows were in good condition. Serena had never tried hunting before, but she knew she would have to if she was to be able to keep the dragonet alive and well. She found she was quite good at it, easily felling a small deer as it ran away. She didn’t feel very happy about it though. She felt sick. She didn’t like killing animals for food. She decided she would never do it unless she had no other choice. The dragon would grow, and learn to hunt for itself sooner or later. As the dragonet happily ate the deer she had bought back, Serena sat on a chair watching it, and trying to think of a good name for the stallion. She decided to name him Shadow. It seemed to suit him, and she had noticed the night before that his shadow never completely disappeared, even though there had been no moon.
Two months later, the dragon was big enough for Serena to ride, though she was having more trouble finding a name for it than she had had for Shadow. The dragon was female, Serena could tell that much from her mental voice when she spoke to her. Serena sat on the dragon’s back and watched the patterns made on the ground from the sun’s reflection on her emerald green scales. As she thought this, Serena sat bolt upright in the saddle the dwarves had given her. That was it! She would call the dragon Groen Een (african for green one). The dragon hummed with satisfaction.
