Liked movie, probably best for Direct-to-DVD
Okay, I liked the movie in a superficial way. In fact, here is what I said about it back in Junary 2007 when I saw it:
Quote:
Ironic that a lot of people are saying this movie is a fantasy rip off of Star Wars considering that Star Wars is a rip off of so many other movies. Ignoring that, Eragon has so many other problems including an almost complete lack of characterisation. Still, though, it ends up being a fun ride and over before you know it.
I know a lot of people slag off on the movie because it ignored or changed so much from the book. However, some of that changing is justified. Paolini should be thrown in jail for the criminal amount of padding he puts into his books. It would be one thing if it was justified...some nice characterisation or plot development. But no. Mostly its to bump up the page count. I was surprised when I heard the "trilogy" was going to go to four books when the whole thing could have easily been done in two. But you can't do that in a movie without having your audience squirm. (LOTR I, anyone?) So out all that had to go.
There's no excuse for the lack of characterisation in the movie, though.
Unless considerable changes were made, a theatrical sequel just isn't in the cards.
But what about a Direct-to-DVD? They've done that twice with
Starship Troopers. Computer technology is good enough now that it won't cost a hundred million to make a convincing dragon. And a good DVD sale may lead to a third one completing the trilogy.
So, all in all, I'd like to see a sequel. And it's best shot is straight-to-DVD.
