Natural Disasters
I searched for a topic like this, but didn't find anything.
So here's somewhere to talk about Natural Disasters (landslides/avalanches/hurricanes/tornados)
I took pictures when we were going through a town called Crowsnest Pass in British Columbia and got kinda creeped out about it and was talking to Shade about it and he wanted to see the pics, so thats what originally brought this topic up.
So here's the pics for Shade and now anyone else who wants to see them.
There was a town called Frank (seriously) here about a hundred years ago and in 1903 a landslide off of Turtle Mountain buried part of the town and aproximatly 90 of the 600 residents. Only about 20 bodies were recovered over the next few years and now there is the municipality of Crowsnest Pass built above it. I personally get creeped out because of it being built on all those dead bodies.
The pictures are kinda crappy cause the car was moving the whole time, we never stopped.

None of the old ones in those ones no, but in the very top picture just on the other side of the tracks you can see the red roof of a garage and the white house beside it. Its newer though. I'm sorry I didn't get any good pictures.

Re: Natural Disasters
Hey, no worries. Still pretty awesome though. Do landslides occur often near there?

Re: Natural Disasters
I actually don't really know... I don't live in the mountains, I live on the foothills, but you don't really hear much for actual landslides much, there are plenty of avalanches, but its been a few years since I've heard of a landslide happening.

Re: Natural Disasters
That's pretty freaky. :/
Like over here, there are mini-tornados sometimes and floods. That's about it. They're both exciting though =D

Re: Natural Disasters
We don't get many tornado's around here, but here are some pictures of one I was supposed to be in.
July 14, 2000. Pine Lake, Alberta.
My family and 2 others were packing up to go to the lake for a couple weeks, but at the last minute my dad got a call to do some custom spraying for a neighbor (we have a business doing stuff like that) so since it was my dads job and he was expected, we had to tell the other families we couldn't make it. So they went on without us and me and my mom and sibs started unloading the trailer again as dad went to work. The next day we could see the clouds from our place (we lived a couple hours away, so this was huge!) and started hearing about the tornado on the radio. We were finally able to get in contact with the other two families the next day while they were at the hospital (the trailer all 10 of them had taken refuge in had a slide out on it and in the wind it was forced back in and one of the moms had her ankle crushed by it) A couple days after it we were able to make it back to the lake with them to get as much of their stuff as we could, including the boat which was floating upside down by the dock. As we were gathering stuff, we came across the campground slot that OUR trailer was going to be in when we got there. A huge tree that my dad could barely reach around had fallen directly in the middle of it and if we had been there it would have totally destroyed our trailer and killed whoever was in it at the time.
One of my closest brushes with death.
These are not my own pictures, I found them online. I didn't want to dig through our many boxes of photos from back then.

Re: Natural Disasters
Ahh ... that's frightening. But they're mini tornados, enough to push you over and hail .... but not enough to damage buildings so much as that

Re: Natural Disasters
Yeah this one was big. Went for a long time too, there were trees about 5 miles away that were ripped through too.
Then there was the one in like the 80's (Translate: before I was born) that was like a mile wide. Think about that; The tornado, from edge to edge, across the smoocher touching the ground, was a MILE wide. Thats monstrous!!! And it was in Edmonton!
For not getting many tornado's, we sure get big ones.
