Prehistoric Dragons
well there was a nother topic like this and there was some debating in it so i thought id start it again with a poll... Well i do think dragons once existed... i mean you had the Plesiosaur's which were a type of swimming dinosuar, also the Pterosaur's which are a type of flying dinosuar... these two could be the closest relitives to a dragon. Take the body shape and size of the Plesiosaur, and the flying ability of the Pterosuar. if you merged them together you would have yourself... well a dragon

Quote: Skarlete Moon they have existed!!!! We made not have proof, but people are still finding dead exstinct things today. Dragons may still be alive, but on a different planet! If they existed on other planets, why are people here on Earth able to think up stories about them? We've never actually met anything from other planets except for rocks, even though we have plenty of our own rocks because thats what the planets themselves are made of. There is no life on other planets and there never have been. The universe is not old enough for entire planets to have fully grown and died already. Dragons are fantasy creatures that some ouf thought up one day when he was really bored.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
*sigh* You just never learn, do you? First of all, you can't say there isn't life on other planets. The universe is, by scientific standards, infinite, so there is bound to be many other inhabited planets. Secondly, how do you know that dragons are not aliens? Perhaps they are. Once again, the universe is infinite, so I would not be surprised if there was a fire-breathing, winged reptilian somewhere in the universe. So once again, I win this arguement.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
No you don't win because you can't prove that there are dragons on other planits thus this is just anouth battle of opinoins and that is all. I think it might have been posible for dragons in the past but unlikely.

There is not life on other planets. The 'verse is not infinite. I have awhole bunch of points I could tell you about that would prove to you all these, but I can not say them, cause it is against SF rules.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
The universe isn't infinite, because it's constantly expanding (proven by red shift) and if it was infinite, it wouldn't be able to expand because it's infinite.

What they said. Dragons need air, to fly at least and there's no air on other planets so that kills that.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
have you people ever read Stephen Hawking? He goes into the nature of time and space very well and is the foremost leader in cosmology. He wrote in his book, A Brief History of Time, that universe, although expanding, is an infinite entity. Nothing can measure it's true length, thereby making it infinite.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
but, in the scientific world, if something can't be measured, it's classified as infinite.

It is highly debated whether or not the Universe is infinite. The red shift does NOT prove that the Universe is infinite. The VAST majority of cosmologists believe that the universe is infinite, but at this time there is no way to prove it either way. We are or SHOULD BE talking about if dragons have existed on THIS planet. I think it's a load of crud. I mean it seems tempting to make up a story about a giant flying lizard that can breath fire. There has been ZERO evidence of dragons. There has been EXTENSIVE digging of all sorts. If there ever were dragons, we would know about it.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
yes they dig a lot. they find new types of skeletons all the time.... and the way scientists put they to look like is still only an exageration... so what im saying is either a skele hasnt been found of a dragon or maybe there has been.... look at the flying dinosuars they found... they cant put them together exactly. maybe they could be a small form of a dragon

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
but they HAVEN'T, which is my point. they haven't found ANYTHING, so there is no evidence that there ever were dragons. In fact, it is COUNTER-EVIDENCE that they haven't found anything.
actually, they aren't finding so many new large dinosaurs lately, and none really with wings.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
I think we've found at least all the land dinosaurs and also most of the flying, but I don't know about all the underwater ones though. And there have been no flying ones that resemble dragons so I can assume that there were never such things as dragons.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
do you really know ANYTHING??? we could all be living in The Matrix and we are being harvested for energy and your parents are really programs. WE CAN'T KNOW ANYTHING!!! You just have to use common sense and logic. What's the chance that we are in the Matrix? not much. What's the chance that there were ever Terrestrial Dragons? again, not much.

the fact that there is no proof or even evidence that there were ever Dragons is enough to say that there were never any. I really don't understand why you put faith in something as silly as the existence of dragons.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
But if they did live on other planets, they would need something to fly on, like air perhaps? And we know there is no oxygen on other plantets, so more than likely they wouldn't be able to fly, so they couldn't be called dragons, and another thing: They never existed!! It's fantasy made up stuff!!

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
he's talking about O(g). and dragons would have to be on THIS PLANET or else they would not be dragons. We could say there would be unicorns on another planet. Maybe there is something very SIMILAR to a unicorn, but it's not a unicorn unless it is on EARTH.

No duh dragons existed. I mean cmon have you guys ever watched dragons on the discovery channel. dragons lived at the time of the dinasours but the swimmin gtype survived the metorite. then it evolved to a land type and then became hunted down to extinction. How do you think humans first saw fire? the answer is obvious.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
I think fire was created by accident with the first batch of hominids, it could of been created with a lightning storm and our first batch of species discovered it. Dragons didn't create fire, it's all fantasy junk!!

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
ya theres fires caused by natural reasons now why couldnt there been then? its not that hard to make fire, you dont need giant flying fire breaters to discover it. besides what a un-likely coincidence it would be if something that was origanly from some ones book was actully real, very unlikely. besides wouldnt we have foudnd some bones by now if there were any?

and some one said how did we come up with them. well if you ask me, george lucas making up star wars, a whole different galaxie with 100s of different planetss and species that would eventualy make 100s of books takees a lot more imagination than just thinking up a cool flying reptile that breaths fire. so why couldnt some one make up dragons?

it's easier to act dumb and say that it's a giant fire breathing, flying lizard than THE EWOKS DID IT!!! Really.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
they WERE created. Why do you think there is so much variation in the myths? some have antlers, some have horns, some have spiked tails, some breath fire, some bring storms to pass. Everyone wanted to put their two bits into the myth. And then there are the profound differences between Eastern dragons, Western dragons, and then there are Wyverns. Again, a flying, firebreathing, giant lizard seems something someone would come up with if they want attention.

for the last time, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT TERRESTRIAL DRAGONS!!! There could be Ewok-like creatures on another planet. There could be Centaur-like creatures on another planet. They are only dragons IF THEY FROM EARTH!!!
No. They could NOT be different species to change the environment. They would not evolve too much because of a lack of barriers.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
Not everything we have on Earth came from earth, so i don't know what you mean. We have no proof on either side so you can't say dragons are fake and i can't say that they are real, but there is a posability that the might have existed and a posability if they are fake.

No. They could NOT be different species to change the environment. Re: Prehistoric Dragons
Medieval people weren't THAT imaginative and they didn't have an idea of life on other planets. There wasn't need to come up with 100 species from other planets back then. why does Star Wars matter? I don't see how it plays into if dragons exist.

what i was saying was contering the thereory that how could we know about them if they never existed, and i was just comenting on that there were many people who could have eaasily thought up something like that when some one like george lucas made up star wars.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
You're just obsessed with Star Wars rpm. To be honest, I posted something very similar to IMNC earlier, pointing out all the variation between cultures, so much variation that they are all really completely different mythical creatures, and just because somebody decided to give them all a general name "dragon" makes people think they are the same.
Also, have you noticed, that all this "proof" they've "found" is very similar to the idea of the modern dragon. Have they ever found a dragon skeleton with antlers and no wings like the chinese one? Have they ever found one with no legs and evidence of gills like various european ones? Hmm... no.

i was just saying that they never needed to have existed for them to be in books, its completely posssible and most likely that some one wih good imagination just made them up.

We're just saying that someone probably made them up, and doubt they did. All the cultures came up with the same idea and they added their own uniquness too it, that's why they are all diffrent, because they made them up.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
Prepare yourself for a long post. I believe that there is no life on other planets, large or small. But what does our own planet hold? Only God knows for sure. Perhaps these verses were where those in medieval times came up with dragons and such. The knights would go on long quests, to do things like look for the Holy Grail, and would invent great stories to tell when they got back. Dragons may have originated there.
I'm going to bring the most reliable source of information in the world into this, the Bible.
Job 40:15-18 15 "Look at the behemoth, [a] which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. 16 What strength he has in his loins, what power in the muscles of his belly! 17 His tail [b] sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are close-knit. 18 His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like rods of iron
what is this, do you think? A dinosour, perhaps? It might be.
Job 41 1 "Can you pull in the leviathan [a] with a fishhook or tie down his tongue with a rope? 2 Can you put a cord through his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook?
7Can you fill his hide with harpoons or his head with fishing spears? 8 If you lay a hand on him, you will remember the struggle and never do it again!
12 "I will not fail to speak of his limbs, his strength and his graceful form. 13 Who can strip off his outer coat? Who would approach him with a bridle? 14 Who dares open the doors of his mouth, ringed about with his fearsome teeth? 15 His back has [b] rows of shields tightly sealed together; 16 each is so close to the next that no air can pass between. 17 They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted.
What does this sound like? A leviathan, like the Loch Ness Monster, or creatures whose bodies have been found in the ocean.
18 His snorting throws out flashes of light; his eyes are like the rays of dawn. 19 Firebrands stream from his mouth; sparks of fire shoot out. 20 Smoke pours from his nostrils as from a boiling pot over a fire of reeds. 21 His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from his mouth. 22 Strength resides in his neck; dismay goes before him. 23 The folds of his flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable. 24 His chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone. 25 When he rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before his thrashing. 26 The sword that reaches him has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin. 27 Iron he treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood. 28 Arrows do not make him flee; slingstones are like chaff to him. 29 A club seems to him but a piece of straw; he laughs at the rattling of the lance.
This is the most like a dragon, but whether any of this should be treated as actual evidence witnessed first hand or figurative speech, is a question that should be asked by a more learned Biblical scholar, which I am not. Read these chapters, and decide for yourself. It looks like it may be figurative, but maybe not. Maybe both.

We know dinsosaurs used to exist, but I don't know about the lochness monster or dragons. We don't have much or any on them. I believe they are fantasy and the people that chase them and try to find evidence to find them are just wasting their time in my opinion.

yeah, i know, but if they accuratley described a dino, (tho many think its an elephant or hippo or somthing, but a thick tail is described) maybe others existed.
then again, God spoke through people, so not necesarily were dinosours alive during job's time.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
Who knows? They could exist some where. But no one really knows.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
if many are alive, they likely exist really deep in the ocean, because no one finds any alive, all dead or dying

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
But dragons with gills wouldn't be able to breathe fire probably and they wouldn't be able to be on land to fly so it coudln't be really be called a dragon.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
Yeah I don't believe in the Lochness monster, people who chase after it I think kinda waste their lives.

Re: Prehistoric Dragons
yeah, we were more just talking about the various prehistoric animals that once did exist and might still, evidence for their existence, and how that effects the chances of dragons having existed.
it was a lost less sophisticated and smart sounding when were actually talking about
