Hey everyone!

I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum or not-please move it if you think it should be moved...

I'm new here, so allow me to introduce myself. My name is Justyne and I am a graphic design student at Georgia Southern University.

I am designing book covers for an assignment in my portfolio class, and I chose to do the inheritance cycle series, along with a box for the books themselves.

I'm not much of a reader, so I have not read the books. That's why I need your help.

I need three of the best scenes: one from each book. I will illustrate that scene for the cover of it's consecutive book. Describe them as vividly as you can, and if you want, you can even design the scene by describing the positioning of the characters, props, or scenery they are in.

The only stipulation I have for the scenes is that the dragon that is currently on the covers (eg: saphira for Eragon) is in the scene itself.There can be more than one dragon in the scene as long as the dragon is the main focus of the image. I'm also not that great at drawing people, so do not mention a scene where there are more than 2-3 people in it, if you can (or no people at all).

I would really appreciate your help with this. I will illustrate them within a few weeks and post them on here so you can see them!

Okay, perhaps if I gave everyone an incentive then someone would reply...

If you give me a scene, and I choose to illustrate it, I will print it out full-color on an 11x17 print, mount it on black illustration board, and send it to you signed... It's the least I can do for some inspiration on the piece.

I really would appreciate it if someone would respond to me by the end of the week. I have to get this assignment done very soon. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Ok how about this...
Two dragons breathing fire at each other over a high mountian One dragon is white while the other is black.
IDK not very descriptive but hopefuly that will help.

The idea I thought was when Murtagh and Eragon meet. It's a red dragon with thorns on its back and.....well.....eveywhere....(see the cover of Brisingr) with a rider who is a man with shaggy black hair blowing in the wind. The other is Saphira (Check the cover of Eragon), a Emerald female dragon, who's rider has a bold face, ears are not completely but pretty much pointy, has a sword that is red, has short blonde hair. He is about 20, right? Now if you're a REALLY good artist you could draw the 2 dragons circling each other the riders clinging to their backs. Thanks.

Which book would this be for? That sounds like a GREAT description (the one with the dragons circling). Saphira...isn't she blue (sapphire?), or does the book describe her as emerald (or green) colored? I want this to be an accurate adaptation of the book. And do you mean the dragon on the cover of Eldest (he's the red one?) or would the red dragon described look more like the yellow dragon on the cover of Brisingr?

I'll PM you about this as well, but which book is this for? Can you describe the dragon's looks/genders (male or female) for me?

If these two are for different books, it looks like I only need a description from the remaining book, whatever it may be. Sounds like they are from either the second or third book. I only saw the Eragon movie (that I know is not like the book in many aspects) so I'm only assuming these are not scenes from the first book.

Saphira is the blue dragon
Thorn is the red one
Glaerd is the gold one

In Eragon you only have saphira and in the following two books you also have the two additional dragons.

There are currently no white dragons in the series that we are aware of.

Thorn and Saphira fighting with Eragon on saphira and Murtagh on Thorn.
Saphira- a deep blue female dragon with ivory spikes going down her back. she as bat like wings.
Thorn- a ruby colored male dragon with ivory spikes going down his back and on his face with bat like wings.
Murtagh- age 19/20 on Thorn's back holding the blood red sword Zar'roc. Murtagh has black hair with grey eyes.
Eragon- age 17/18 on Saphira's back holding the blue sword Brisingr. Eragon has Brown hair with brown eyes.
Like Aorian said the two could be circling each other blowing fire Saphira's fire is bule while Thorn's reddish orange.

this is both Saphira and Thorn.


by the way Alex Bid'daum the first Eragon's dragon was white.

Alex, Thanks for clearing that up. Really appreciate it. I want to do the books justice so knowing the correct colors is always a good thing.



Fanghur, I don't think I thanked you for welcoming me to the forums, so thank you! This description is great to add on to Aorian's description. What book would this be for? Eragon, Eldest, or Brisingr?

So I guess I have one book cover decided for! I need two other descriptions for the other two books. I still need to know what book that Aorian and Fanghur's description is from. But I will get started on some sketches tomorrow. Hopefully someone else will post another scene from one of the other books!


Fanghur, your initial description sounds interesting, but what book was it from? Is the white dragon ever in an actual scene or is it just mentioned in the book? I need actual scenes that happened in the book, so that when people see my covers and have read the books they can relate to it. That white dragon does sound pretty awesome though...lol

the white dragon was just mentioned but we never really saw him
for what book...either what about book four? I know its not out yet or even has a title but that makes it more fun you don't have the real book holding back your imagination you could just call it Empire thats what some people are calling but if that doesn't work then do it for Brisingr.

wait do you want a description for all the books?

Yes, I would love a description for all three existing books. I would get creative with the fourth book, however, my professor wants me to do the actual 3 books that are still in existence. So... the scene you and Aorian described is from Brisingr, correct?

Sorry! I just did my RP with Emerald the dragon! ANyways Saphira is saphire blue and that is then ending chapters of Eldest. I hope that clears it up. Thorn is red, yep. Sorry I messed up!

So, I've got Eldest covered, I just need two more scenes: one from Eragon, and one from Brisingr.

OK, now for Eragon imagine 2 dragons fighting (this time not fighting, more of flying against each other in a race) one is Saphira, you already know how she looks. Eragon is on her, but he looks younger. His face isn't as bold, he doesn't have the elf years, and his hair is shorter. Now the other one is the hard one. Especially the dragon, because it's.....well......not a dragon. It's this black thing that looks like a shadow. You can't make you any features or colors, just the blackness of the wings tail and head, which doesn't have eyes probably. It's rider is Shade, so he has markings, long orange hair, kind of elder looking, wear's a black gown, and, well, if you can do it, he looks partially insane. Behind them by the way is a battle with arrows flying everywhere and people fighting along the ground in a huge city. That's one option. If you don't want a war one you could also do a female elf girl with black hair blowing in the wind who is holding one hand up high and a shining blue-white egg in her hand. The eeg is sparkling. This is still sort of violent, because she is not in fire but she is in the center of a ring of fire burning down trees all around her and what not. Hope that helps.

how about when Saphira and Eragon first met?
Saphria just hatched from the blue egg that Eragon thought was a stone so Eragon should look pretty surprised his hand reaching to pet the dragon hatchling's head they are in Eragon's room. His room in the book was described pretty plain so a bed, rug, and a shelf with weird nik-naks on it. Eragon looks the same as my last description execpt maybe dirtyer sinc he was plowing the feilds all day. Saphira as description as before just smaller. about the size of your forearm from head to tail.

Aorian, I LOVE your ideas, but to be honest, I want all three book covers to look VERY different from each other. But I really do appreciate it: your descriptions are amazing! How about trying to describe a scene from Brisingr for me?:D



That actually sounds perfect. It's different from the Eldest cover I am working on, and It's so cute!! I'm definitely doing this for the Eragon cover. Thanks again!

how about eragon and Rhunön making Brisingr Eragon's sword? I don't really remember what Rhunön looks like all I know is that she is old but not frail. Eragon is the one smithing (if thats the word) the sword Rhunön could maybe be in the backround meditating kinda. they are in a smith's house so hammer, fire, swords, axes, daggers should be hanging in the backround.

I haven't read Brisingr But to add on to Fanghur's idea the sword would have a blue glow on it, right? Doesn't the Rider's sword match their dragon?

well since he is still forging the sword it should be a bright orange

kinda like this but maybe it could like fade into blue.

That idea is great, but I'm not very good at drawing people (in fact, I'm getting help from other artists to draw the people) so I really need a scene that is "dragon-heavy", if you know what I mean.

Eragon and Saphira are talking the Menoa tree to get the weapon Solebum spoke of.
Menoa tree is huge big enough for Saphira to sit on its branches like a bird. The Menoa tree is holding Eragon and Saphra with her her roots the book said it took up ten acrers

That sounds REALLY interesting. I really like that idea! I will be sure to do some research on that scene specifically. But that sounds perfect! Thanks again!

Really? Brown hair and eyes, huh? I'll have to fix that before I print it...but here's the second illustration...it took FOREVER.

Also attached is the first version (before my professor tears it apart) of my book covers. I really like them...I think the only thing she will make me change is the font for Paolini's name. It's a little "much", but it still works.

Working on the third illustration...and I will definitely change the hair/eye color of Eragon. I want it to be accurate.

And no, no people are in the second illustration...sorry guys but I can only do so much! It took me nearly 20 hours to complete the second image with just the dragons...lol
