The Great Advance

Gender: Guy Affiliation: Dragonriders Dragon: Avadius	The Great Advance Stretching for miles as far as the eye could see a massive fleet moved towards Alagaesia’s western isles. Already hundreds upon hundreds of dragons had taken to the air, flapping their mighty wings in rhythmic patters as they soared above the ships. Though from the south their land was, Demondred had changed his course of direction of invasion since he had been routed from Surda. They would not expect an invasion from the west. On the lead ship with the tip of the bow shaped with an actual dragon head, Demondred sneered as the first island came into sight. The island wasn't that large, so he hoped he could take it without a struggle. His invasion would come as a quick surprise attack. No forces had ever stood up against his army. Though some attempted, all fell to the might of Ardonia's imperial army. Lying next to him like a massive gold dog was his dragon Argos. Harshly Demondred commanded, "What are you waiting for you disgrace of a dragon! Get up! We attack soon!" As if whipped Argos leapt into the air a proud smile coming across his face, Yes master. Demondred smirked and glanced back at his massive fleet and air force, "Oh Alagaesia, you have unleashed a monster that will destroy you. You're savage lands stand no chance." At once the dragons that made up his air force roared in unison War would come to this foolish land, and they would pay for resisting him, Demondred would make sure of that. Every last elf, dwarf, and urgal would be killed and dragon enslaved. Fools they all were, ignorant fools. As land approached them he shouted out, “Attack! Show no mercy! Slaughter all in your way. Sharktooth is actually right in the middle. When I say northwestern islands, I always mean the ones to the northwest of Vroengard (so almost off the map). That would certainly be unexpected lol. Can I assume you mean there? Cause I'm gonna join with Ecco and Sirius first. IC: Ecco had heard that this was coming. She had been getting news from the dolphin pods up and down the coast for weeks, now. But still, seeing the fleet of warships with the cluster of color onboard that meant dragons, made her nervous. This was a substantially larger force than she had seen the first time. After the battle to the south, Ecco had headed north up the coast, telling various dolphin and whale friends of hers to be on the lookout for just such a fleet. Yesterday, the news had arrived from one of her good orca friends: Demondred's forces would arrive the next day. She had already warned the Shaman elves on their cluster of islands to the north to get ready. Demondred, in his insanity, was intent on purging the land of their "inferiority." She feared greatly for her kins' lives. Most of them had taken her warning seriously and were leaving for secret parts of the Spine (places they had been forced out of by Galbatorix, but in the current chaos in the Empire they would be able to return to them). Some, however, were staying to fight. Ecco smiled at the thought of her friends. These elves were not ordinary. They were all powerful magic users, but they also had uncanny connections to the magic of the earth, and all were shapeshifters. Ecco knew that Demondred wanted the shapeshifters to join them, but her kin would never stand for the beliefs he was trying to spread. They would fight with her. Ecco, currently in elf form, was standing atop a cliff, watching the fleet in the far distance. It would be ten minutes before they made landfall, apparently at an island a little to her north. The isle they were aiming for was little more than a chunk of rock. Without wasting any more time, the elf backed up until she was about a hundred yards from the cliff edge. As soon as she backed far enough, she sprang forward and began sprinting toward open air. As she reached the edge of the precipice, she sprang off, leaping forward and curving her body into a diving shape, but with her arms held back along her sides. As she dove, her body dissolved into thousands of points of light, and reformed, this time in the shape of a black and white dusky dolphin. She hit the water with a smooth splash and was pumping her flukes immediately, heading straight out toward the fleet. She would stall them a little before they arrived. A glittering form darted from cloud to cloud, seeking cover as he made his way west. Sirius's body, mostly white with silver-edged wings and crest and a silvery edging when it caught the light at angles, blended nicely with the grayish whisps of clouds he was darting to and from. If he was seen early, he would almost certainly get attacked by Demondred's draconic force. The young dragon had heard the full story from his mother and from many of the dragons at the Dragon Mountain. In fact, the place was filled with excitement and action. At last, dragons were being actively sent out in preparation for a war. Sirius smiled softly to himself. A secret war, one they had to fight without the Varden or Galbatorix learning of it. If they learned of foreign enemies, come to conquer, then the war at home would falter. Faefnir had foreseen it. He had told them all that if this war involved the entire Empire, Galbatorix would finally emerge from Uru'baen. And that would mean the end of them all. But, if Galbatorix saw no real threat from these foreigners, he wouldn't bother dealing with it himself. Sirius finally got out over the open ocean. When he glanced down, he saw a small shape just below the surface of the water, coming to it occasionally. It was a dolphin. A very familiar type of dolphin. Sirius hadn't seen many different species of dolphin, but he very distinctly remembered the last time he had seen a dusky dolphin. When he saw where the dolphin was headed, he knew it had to be her. Ecco? he called down, tentatively extending his mind to the lithe shape. Sirius? Hey, it's nice to see you again! I'm sure your mother told you that I was one of the ones who helped down in Surda? Well, this time it's more personal. I used to live near here, you see, she replied, voice friendly. Sirius gave a small laugh. That would explain it, then. You should be careful, though. I'm sure Demondred has water dragons with him, the white replied. But none like me. I'm not going to attack right away, you know. This is a secret mission. The sun was shining onto them, the water moved fine beneath the hulls of their ships, and the wind was a gently breeze as it blew them away with the aid of magic and dragon power. Everything was perfect for this mission, and for that Demondred ordered his soldiers into tighter security. He knew from several past experiences at warfare that if you felt fine and conferrable about the battle than quickly tighten security and expect anything. When everything seemed fine was when everything could easily go wrong. "I want twenty dragons to scout out the island. We will set up our main campaign to the surrounding ones there. Send weaker dragon so our losses won't be great if they die. We can afford their deaths." he ordered. "Yes emperor." the man replied and hurried off. At once twenty dragons, mostly hatchlings or younglings or weak ones flew away from the ships towards the island. In the distance Demondred could make out a dolphin. They and their whale cousins were oddly common around these parts, more common than usual. Something was up with them, but Demondred had more important things to deal with than them. "Any shape-shifter than can fly circle the fleet and tell me if you see any strange sights." At once they did so, a few large birds, gryphons, dragonic like creatures, large bats and flying reptiles at once circled the fleet. As the island came closer into view an evil smile flickered across his face. And Fireriver, it'll probably be okay if you join. IC: Ecco continued forward for a few more minutes, leaping above the water occasionally like a normal dolphin. Abruptly, she dove beneath the water and disappeared. Below the waves, she was summoning her magic. Though she couldn't use much magic in dolphin form, she had a few specific powers that she could use, though infrequently. Each would last only about ten to fifteen minutes, and she would not be able to use them again for even longer. Still they were necessary. She spoke two different spells, one that would give her fifteen minutes of air rather than just the normal three or four. The second spell enhanced her echolocation and also her sound wave attack to extreme levels. When she finished both spells, she summoned her ice-armor. The armor would last as long as she needed it to. The dusky dolphin reached the area directly beneath the warships, though she was far below them. When she was right under one of them, she shot up through the water. She got to the bottom of one of the massive hulls, and immediately wished that this form had mobile lips. She really wanted to smile. Her sound wave attack could blast through rock. Wood? Wood was nothing. A powerful blast of sound, almost like lightning in sonic form, erupted from her forehead (her melon) and hit the ship squarely in the side just above the keel. The wooden planks cracked and bent in. She let out another powerful sound wave attack, and the wooden beams finished breaking, smashing inward and creating a substantial hole in the ship (a hole about twenty feet in diameter). Ecco quickly raced to the other side of the warship, and began doing the same. She only had a few minutes with this ability, and she would use it to the fullest extent. Sirius finally decided to make his presence known as a horde of dragons (all of them looking either weak or extremely young) and shapeshifters began setting out from the fleet of ships. First, he flapped to gain more altitude, so he would only just be recognizable as a dragon. Then, he soared away from the clouds he was above and got into a clear area just above the ships, extremely visible as the sun glinted off his sparkling white scales. And just in case that wasn't enough, he breathed out a powerful blast of starfire in a cloud bigger than he was. His starfire was streaked with white, but had just the same properties as his mother's. He wondered if Demondred would recognize the flames. OOC: Ohmygosh this is my last post as a dragon rider! Minerela stepped out of the cave where she lived on her island-And then stared in absolute shock in the sight that confronted her. It was impossible. Something like this just couldn't exist. There were ships, far too many to possibly count. The fleet cruising steadily forward was like nothing that had ever been in Alagaesia. It was the most terrifying thing Minerela had ever seen. But even that paled in comparison to the dragons. A single dragon is awe-inspiring. Several dragons together is absolutely terrifying. But this.... The way Minerela felt, watching the hundreds of approaching dragons was beyond words.The army amassed before her was awe-inspiring. It was terrifying. And it was also the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. The thousands of dragons reflected the light of the sun, casting down shards of light upon the water and making the whole thing so bright she could barely stand to look at it. It was so utterly incredible, she could barely believe it really existed. For a few minutes, Minerela simply gazed at the scene before her. Then she jerked herself out of her shock. She had to do something, and fast. If they weren't stopped.... She could only imagine the destruction that an army like this could cause. But what should she do? if she tried to stop this army, she would die practically the moment she left the island. And she rather doubted any attempts to escape would be all that successful, either. Suddenly, Minerela became aware of many, many other minds around her. Someone had gathered an army to defend Alagaesia. But against a force like this, what chance did they stand? A thought occurred to her. She couldn't stop the army, but she might be able to stall them.... Quickly, Minerela made her way to the end of the island farthest from the army, trying to stay out of sight. She took a deep breath and leapt into the water, then swam around the island. In moments, she was fifty feet beneath the fleet. She let out a mental cry, warning everything in the water to get out of there, and fast. She was careful to make sure her mental shout stayed completely in the water. A few moments later, when she was sure everything had left the area-Most everything was staying away from the ships anyway-she released her power. Minerela began to glow. At first it was very subtle, just a soft, shifting blue-green aura around her, but then it grew stronger, brighter than ever before. In under sixty seconds, she was done. The huge fleet was encased in an enormous iceberg that encompassed every ship and went, at its deepest parts, forty feet deep. She was exhausted, but it was worth it. Even if all the dragons tried to melt the iceberg, she'd be able to keep this up for a minute. A quick question though, can’t dolphins already hold their breath for about fifteen minutes? @Fireriver: Yeah, you can join Demondred gave a smirk as the sleet was covered in ice. Though something had crashed through a few of the ships the ice had frozen over the holes. At once he jutted up his hand ordering, "Mages, repair the damage to our vessels. I'll deal with this." Pointing his hand up he said several words in the ancient language and the glacier around them fractured apart, splitting into millions of pieces. It was then he noticed an enemy water dragon. To his in the air he pointed at it and ordered them to attack. "Sir!" running towards him was a soldier, "we repaired the damage, but it seems a few had been broken apart by a water dragon of some sorts. It could be Ecco from Surda." Demondred snarled at the name. Ecco, she was a traitor to he own kind, "I want ten water dragons in the ocean! Kill any sea creatures larger than a firsh you see!" At that from the sky ten water dragons dove into the sea along with a few shape shifters that could turn into sharks. The island was now just feet in front of them. At once some of the ships begun to set sail as soldiers piled onto the island to set up base camp for their campaign. "These fools really think they can resist? She shifted so she could see what. She gasped, but immediately moved so if the dragon turned to look she would see nothing. An army of dragons... more dragons then she had ever seen together since the fall. And ships. So many ships. The dragon made her way to the ships. After a few minutes the water close to the ships turned to ice. At least I know shes not with them, She thought. She took a deep breath, and called out to some eagles that were circling nearby. "Watch them, but stay out of sight. If it turns to war then join in, and help us." They flew off. The ice cracked, and the ships started to move slowly once again. She swam out to the ships, staying out of sight. Once she got close enough, she said "Adurna risa" ( water rise ) the water shifted so that the ships slowly fell into the sea. She realeased the magic, and water fell into the boats, enough to sink them, but not enough to do it fast. IC: Ecco punched six holes in one of the warships before her power ran out. She began swimming quickly away, and when she had left the immediate area around the fleet, she heard a warning call. The warning came from the mind of a dragon! She turned rapidly around as she sensed the water magic being worked, and saw the water form into ice, walling up the fleet and preventing it from continuing. Ecco decided it was time for another metamorphosis. She transformed into her dragon shape, and immediately felt more powerful, more ready for battle. She cast out her senses for this new dragon, and felt her immediately. Ecco followed her mind and began echolocating the water in front of her, eventually finding the water dragon. She was young, no more than a year or two old, but judging by the way she had manipulated the water, her blood was more pure water/ice dragon than Ecco's, suggesting either that her egg had been laid a long time ago or she came from far away. Ecco swam towards her, casting out her own mental presence to let the young dragoness know that she was coming. Already she could sense Demondred's dragons being sent out. The ice was breaking. Eventually she came within sight of the dragoness. We should retreat for the moment. The fleet of ships you just attacked is one intent on invasion. The shapeshifter leading it, Demondred, is trying to enslave dragons and kill races other than humans and shapeshifters. My name is Ecco, by the way, she relayed quickly as she approached the young dragoness. She didn't know how much this water dragon knew about fighting, but for now Ecco decided to stay with her. She sensed Demondred's soldiers entering the water. Stay close to me if you wish to fight. Otherwise, I suggest you leave, she told the young dragoness quickly, twisting herself around and getting ready for battle. Sirius sensed the magic working, and quickly located its source. He couldn't see the new dragon from up here, but he could sense her mind. He growled as Demondred sent a horde of soldiers into the water after her and Ecco. Now would be a good time to distract them. The white dragon pulled in his wings and dove, smooth scales sliding effortlessly through the air. Hey! Demondred! Want a real challenge? he spat as he came down on the fleet. Sirius let out a powerful roar and a large stream of starfire bathed the deck of one of the warships. When the flames cleared, the young dragon was already racing away. Her shock increased as she saw several water dragons shooting toward her. More water dragons! But i've never seen a trace of any other of my kind... What is going on here!?!?! Minerela abruptly broke out of her shock, whipping around as she sensed another dragon approaching-A water dragon, no less! After a brief internal conflict, Minerela made her decision, whipping back around to face the approaching dragons. They were all bigger than her, but that would only increase her greatest strength in combat. "I am Minerela." She said, pulling her wings to her sides, tightening her muscles and compacting herself until she was barely recognizable as a dragon. Now she just looked like a ten foot snakelike waterbeast with a line of spines and two sea-green eyes. As the dragons approached, Minerela shot herself forward with a sharp flick of her tail, sliding barely a foot under one of the dragons so that her talons raked his underbelly. As she emerged from underneath the dragon, her tail grabbed that of the other dragon and she shot downward, dragging the dragon several yards. At once his soldiers had already begun to pile onto the island as dragons and flying shape-shifters took to the skies. At once he noticed Ecco as she turned into her dragon form. Snarling, he leapt into the air and transformed into his dragonic creature form. Flying towards Ecco he grabbed her from the air and tossed her right into the small dragon that shot star fire. "Ecco, do you and your band of fools think they can defeat the most powerful army on the planet?" he taunted. Around him his ships fired either catapults or dragon harpoons at those who tried to defy them. Four dragons flanked Minerla and grabbed her from the water and begun to claw and tear at her or attack her with flames. In the water water dragons shot jets of heated water. "Sir!" a soldier shouted to Demondred, "We made landfall the island. What are your orders?" Sneering Demondred replied, "Set up a base of operations. These fools will be dealt with sure enough. Just so you know, dark. lol IC: Ecco grinned as Minerela shot forward towards their attackers. She was made for the water, judging by how she swam. Ecco was built more for the areas in between: the rough sea surface, the turbulent ocean winds, the ice and cliffs of the shore. Before she could rush forward to help in the attack, however, she was grabbed by none other than Demondred himself and flung roughly away. She whipped her head back with a snarl as he picked her up, but did not fight immediately. Instead, she let herself fall neatly back into the water. Who says we're trying to defeat you, you overgrown tunicate? I'll settle for killing a few of your better soldiers and sinking some ships! she challenged back, lurking under the water's surface. If he came for her again, she would simply swim away. She knew she was fast enough in the water to avoid another attack. She glanced toward Minerela out of the corner of her eye, and realized that she had to swim over to help. Sirius snorted as he flew, circling the fleet almost lazily. They didn't seem to consider him a threat. Abruptly, he saw several of the big dragons attack the smaller water dragon, viciously trying to inflict damage. The young white bared his teeth in a snarl, blue eyes blazing angrily. He sped forward and dove, slicing through the air. He reached one of the four dragons and tackled him, twisting him away from the water dragoness in a wild tumble through the air. Sirius ripped his powerful talons across the dragon's throat, for he had latched onto the enemy dragon just above his shoulders at the base of his neck. He wrenched himself out of the uncontrolled spin and righted himself, letting the dragon spin out into the ocean with his throat bleeding out. He then tore after another of the dragons. Before Sirius reached the other dragon, his scales erupted with intense light, blinding his opponent. The dragon shrieked and turned away momentarily, allowing Sirius to attack her with no initial resistance. Minerela froze the water the dragons in the water shot at her, almost amused by the attack-Did they really think that would work against another water dragon?- and the ice blocked most of the dragon's fire, she managed to duck the rest. She was much smaller then the other dragons and it wasn't too difficult to avoid most of them, however, she did get a long gash on her left shoulder. That slowed her down considerably, and she was having difficulty avoiding the dragon's attacks when a white dragon interfered. After that, Minerela had an easier time of it. She shot up, barely missing a dragon's claws, and thwacked the end of her tail sharply into the head of the dragon whose grasp she'd just escaped. In a couple minutes, the four dragons were all gone. Glancing at the four he let out a cold laugh, "Don't bother with these fools. Let them get themselves killed. Just get onto the island. We sail to the otehrs once base camp is set up." As his army did get on the island he transformed into his dragonic form and flew towards Ecco and Sirius. Flying towards Sirius, he grabbed his tail and threw him into Minerela. Above him the flying shape-shifters begun to dive bomb the others who dared try to fight his army. To a few he ordered, "Scout out the other islands. Tell me jus what lives there and how strong their forces are." Taking a deep breath, she jumped out of the bush she was hiding in, and shot arrows at them, using her archery skill and fast skill. One more solider was left, and she was out of arrows. She quickly ran towards him, and grabbed his throat. " Who commands you?" Arianna demanded. " De-Demondred." He choaked out. Arianna considered weather she should kill him or not. Making up her mind she killed him painlessly, with a simple spell. I really need a bracelet with a jewel, she thought. She called out to an eagle then. " What have you discovered?" The ships commander is Demondred. He wants this island as his own, I think. " Very good. Join the battle now." She told the eagle. She put her bow in her quiver, and turned to face the ships. There were dragons fighting. Lots of them. She wondered what she should do. The only thing possible was to stay here until this Demondred sent more troops to the island. IC: Ecco attacked all the enemies she could in the water. They might be trained, but she had her share of fighting experience as well, and none of them had claws or teeth like hers. The ice/water dragons of the northwest coast had once been famous for those weapons. Soon the water was clouded with red, and visibility diminished to almost nothing with all the blood. Ecco now had another advantage: that of her echolocation. It was an ability she had from her affinity with dolphins, for as a shaman elf her shapeshifting form was a dusky dolphin. All of the shaman elves inherited magical abilities closely related to those of their other form. Ecco sonared another dragon coming in for the attack. However, it obviously could only just see her. Before it reached her, she slashed at its face, blinding it and leaving very deep gashes. As Sirius was finishing off one of the dragons that had been attacking the water dragoness, something grabbed him by the tail and flung him at her. He snapped out his wings and changed the direction of his tumble so that he hit the water, and only his tail caught the dragoness (though it was a glancing blow). He had hit the water fairly hard, but only enough to stun him for a couple seconds. He had gotten some skill in swimming on a mission with Ecco and another dragoness named Sera, and used that now to dart away quickly and leap out of the water nearby, angry at Demondred. The shapeshifter was now directing his troops from a farther vantage point. Sirius sent a few well-aimed starfire missiles at him and then attacked some of the enemy dragons, keeping an eye on Demondred as he did. I'm kinda busy. When Demondred threw the white dragon at her, Minerela swerved aside sharply, but his tail still gave her a light clip on the wing. Not really anything to worry about, but her speed was decreased, just a fraction, but that was taking away from her greatest strength. When the white dragon was stunned as he hit the water, Minerela turned the water into an ice block around one of the dragons who was about to attack him. He melted the ice almost instantly, but it was enough to keep him from attacking until the white dragon got away. Minerela briefly considered helping Ecco fight the water dragons, but then decided she was handling them fine on her own, and she wouldn't be able to fight well with the water fogged up. She wondered how Ecco managed it. OOC: Short, pass. Posting this during lunch break, don't have the time for a real post. Physical science in a few minutes....
