Post What kind of endings are best in a book?
What sort of endings do people like better when they're reading a good book?

Well, it works the same with me and movies. I prefer the sad endings because they're more realistic and provoke more emotions than just happy endings, but that's me.

If there's another ending you'd prefer, please write it (that's why I didn't put "other" in a poll. I'd rather find out what the majority of people like).

I like happy endings, for obvious reasons. They're happy. But I prefer sad/bittersweet, because it feels more. I understand that literature, film, and other such media are generally an escape from this world. But I find it to be more of a window to look at our lives. Non happy makes you think more, about why it isn't, what went wrong, what it means, sometimes it'll make the viewer remember things, and there you go. And if it's quality, it sticks in your mind for a long time.

I like sad endings, for some reason, they do stay in my mind longer than happy ones, and happy andings just make some stories really well... fake.
Well, bittersweet ending are my favourite, happy, yet really sad at the same time...

I couldn't have put it better. The fact that sad ends work better (if written properly). It seems to point out the fact that sadness is a stronger emotion than happiness. May be why so many people are depressed in the world.

Bittersweet, that's what I've been thinking about too, but I can't lay a finger on an example.

Hm.... how about indefinite endings? As in, the reader is left to decide the ultimate outcome of the story. Like, the short story, The Lady and the Tiger. I forget the detail, but I'll try to summarize. Basically, there's a king who has a justice system in which decisions are left up to chance. A commoner falls in love with the King's daughter, so the King decides to punish him. The commoner has to choose between two doors, one opening up to the a woman, who he will be able to marry if he picks that door, and the other containing a tiger, which will kill him if he picks that door. The suspense builds, I forget what happens in between, but it comes down to time for the guy to pick which door, and then the story immediately ends. So, it's basically left up to you to decide for yourself what happens. I don't know if I really like that kind of ending... the story is left incomplete, so.... On the other hand, though, it is kind of thought-provoking.

I don't think sadness is stronger, I just think it's easier to become sad than it is to become happy. =) ;)

Your favorite story. ;) I think it combines elements of bittersweet and sadness. Not to ruin the story for those who haven't read it, but think about the very very end. (Forest Stone ;) )

I agree with you aryaa, incomplete endings also make one think. Hopefully, with movies, it's on purpose and not because they were lazy. :P Anyway yes, the imagination of the end is more powerful than any written finish could be. Take that story of yours for example. ;) It wouldn't be nearly as good if he opened a door.

I like stories that keep you think after the end. Especially in a series, I want the first books to end right in the middle of something big, and keep you hanging till the next book. But I like the last book to sum everything up. I don't really care particularly for any ending as long as everything is covered, and you are left with a sense that the book benefited you by reading it. And I mean benefit in any way, such as taking up what would otherwise be wasted time.

A good bittersweet would be Marley and me (watch it, cause I'm not spoiling )

in honesty, cliffhanger that are never resolved. because you sit there wondering what the !@$% is going to happen and it eats at you forever and then you start going over what may happen and yeah, I like those :D

I like endings you remember. Maybe a sad movie with a finally happy ending or a happy movie with a sad ending or maybe just an ending with a moral.

To sum up my thoughts on this ... I like endings that are memorable, dramatic, thought-provoking, and touching. Something that changes you and makes you re-think things. Just something that keeps you thinking ... That's my kind of ending, anyway.

Something that sticks to you (End of Elfen Lied manga for example, or the end of FMA the movie)

but typically it's the sad endings that are the most memorable, and have the most twists that make you say "What the...? that was freaking genius"

I like sad/nothing really changed endings. like people are saying "the sad ones are more realistic". but the went nowhere ones are kinda cool. like Not As Crazy As I Seem (AWESOME BOOK YOU SHOULD READ IT NOW!!!!) nothing really changes at the end.

i don't like endings at all. If a book is good enough to make me read the rest of the series it makes me sad even if it was a happy ending.

I prefer happy endings, just because I like to stay on the optimistic side. You guys are right in saying that sad endings are more powerful and emotional, but that isn't always the case. Take, for instance, Avatar. Everything was resolved in the end, like Kataang, the war, Zuko's family issues. I thought that was a pretty emotional ending; at least for me it was.

In English class, we're reading a whole lot of short stories, and nearly all of them have sad endings, where one or more people end up dying. Sometimes the stories are overall pointless and I find them a waste of time, but others are really thought-provoking and make insights into human nature and other concepts. In stories with sad endings, you really can get something out of the story. But this can also apply to happy endings; you can learn a whole lot from any type of story.

So basically, I prefer happy endings, but only because I like positive things. :)

I like endings that really really sad. Like, make you cry sad. Simply because those are so hard to write. A happy ending is just too easy for me, plus I'm a sick freak who enjoys charrie death and a good torture scene, so there ya' go lol

What, sad isn't a good ending, unless you do it in a good way. A good ending to a book is one that gives closure to story, or one that leaves you completely hanging so that either you can't wait for the next book, or you are left to figure out what happens next according to what you want.

Lol, onetime I had this friend who wrote a parody once about how stupid some endings can be, and the end of the parody was "And then they all died, but first the chibi knight married the anime princess, which was weird. But they really loved each other so they, before dying, were really happy." XD

Endings can be strange things sometimes. But, if you think about it, there's really no such thing as a happy ending unless it was a poorly written story. If it was a good book then the ending will be sad purely because you're sad the book has ended. XD *Huggles Seer and Sword* I MISS IT!! XD

I suppose you got a good point there, but that is why I read books that don't really have an ending. Like Anne McCaffery's books, though she isn't writing any more, but her son is still continuing the story :D

Thanks ^?^ *Bows*

Peh...the Neverending story is such a liar...I checked it out from the library just so I could laugh when I got to the end lol

But yes, stories without end are good, but then they also sort of leave you to wonder; "What happens next?" but I suppose that's where fanfiction comes in.

LOL that made me crack up. I personally believe both are good. I love the book Sacrifice, although Mara dies in the end. It's super sad. But I like it. *and look who voted for happy endings...*

Thank ya' ^?^

AGH! You scared me for a second, when you said
"Mara" my head went to "Mara: Daughter of the Nile" and I was like "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT????!" because I read that book and she's alive in the end, so I thought that there must be a sequel or something lol XP

Here's my new improved two cents on the subject:

(Bad ending for a book: Happy)

1. And they got married, after all of the hardship, and got married and the Prince became king, just like that! Yay! And then it rained FLOWERS and BUTTERFLIES and everything was totally perfect because, with the prince as king, there were NEVER anymore wars or ANYTHING! THE END!!!!!!

2. And everything went back to normal, because there's no way on Earth anyone could POSSIBLY have any mental damage after being kidnapped by aliens, forced to work as a spy, or having to single-handedly save the woyald from total destruction! Nah, people tend to be just fine after that! In fact, the world never had any problems again just because the spy-person defeated someone! YAY! The end.

3. The bad guy went boom. It was sad, since he was the good guys' father and everything, but that's okay because he was totally ebil and the good guy was really happy to do it. He then married the background character, who happened to be a princess in disguise, and took over her fathers' rule over the kingdom, even though he had no political training. Ever. But that was okay, because who was going to attack their rich, prosperous kingdom? I mean, who in their right mind would even DREAM of such a thing? No one! Because this is too HAPPY for that! Ahahaa! The end.

(Bad endings for a book: Sad)

1. The main, who'd spent the entire book going on the longest, hardest, most difficultest journey ever, with absolutely no help or friends besides his dog, which died, FINALLY defeated the bad guy, but not before his girlfriend was killed, having time to die in his arms before he resumed the epic fight. Then the bad guy swung by the dungeons, still during the fight, and murdered the rest of the mains' family, including the younger siblings that were never previously mentioned, and his mentor, and his back-up girlfriend, and the princess, and Aboo, and all of the plushies, and that random little kid only mentioned once before. And then the bad guy was killed by the main, who was so distraught that he didn't think to even try to defeat anyone else, instead he just killed himself and that was the end. Oh, but at least the bad guys couldn't operate without their leader, so it was still happy. No wait, as it turned out, the tragic main had accidently killed the wrong bad guy, so the baddies still won! Sob...the *Sniffle* end...

2. The main jumped in front of a train to save someone, then got shot by the bad guys. Then he was beaten senseless by a chibi squirrel tied to a stick, then he was shot again as his girlfriend watched. She still had time to take him to the hospital, but then turned evil and killed him, by stabbing him with her lipstick, and then she tortured him with her mascara brush while he took his final breaths. Those mascara brushes really tickle your eyelids, you know. Anyway, then the main died and there just happened to be no one around who even cared, so he was just like, left there until...well...the end...Gag...

3. The main had a cat, but it was killed, then she got a boyfriend. He died as well. Then she met this super hawt ninja dude, but he had too many secrets and died as well. Then she met another really hawt ninja, but his secret was that he was actually one of the bad guys, so he took over the world. After a couple of years living in the world of the super hawt ninja, the main finally met a super hawt guy that seemed to be absolutely perfect. But then when they got married she found out he was really a vampire who was obsessed with techno and he drank all of her type O. while listening to ravers' fantasy. Having all of your blood drank up by a vampire kills you, by the way, but he took her to the chibi hospital before she was like, dead, and stuff. So she was okay and after a few years they had a baby but it was also a vampire, so then it got bitten by a werewolf and, oneday after the main had all of her type O. drunk again the werewolfling ate her internets and then her as well, this time while listening to Zombie Nation, which was a really weird coinsidence. And she did die this time. It was uber sad. The end. Oh, and the super hawt vampire is still on the loose, by the way.

XD Sorry about that lol I'll post the good endings when I can think of some. And no, none of the examples above were stabs at any real books, okay?

Yes they all were. books best known as most manga, Fallen Vampire, Aquarian Age Juvenile Orion, and a well known book named The Odyssus. :D :D

Whoops, really? Haha, but I've never read any of those lol...well except that last one...hehe...XP

An ending I like a lot is when they just say the title as the last line XP

OH, perfect ending, from Gone with the Wind!

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a...OH LOOK, a beaver!"

But seriously, that's epic WIN...I hate that book...-_- But for real, my favourite ending EVER, is in the Seer and the Sword,

"Surely the fate of these two was carved from the same tree."

"Indeed, and by the same blade."

EEP! I loversloverslovers Landon! *Tackle huggles him*

hmmmm.... my last post was entirely sarcasm, by the way....
i think a blurred mixture of both works just fine, in many cases. you know, when they blend the sad so it seems happy?
