Dak and Mena
Name: Dak
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Skills: Freezing Powers- This is an ability that Dak inherited from his gryphon. He can use his powers to freeze objects and lower the temperature around him. Because Dak inherited this ability because of his bond to Mena, he does not have to use the Ancient Language to perform ice spells. The amount of energy needed to freeze an object varies depending on distance and the size of the object, as well as magical properties of the object. Dak’s ice powers are not very strong yet so he can’t freeze enemies that are protected by wards yet.
Ice Bombardment: This is a variant of Dak’s ice powers but it is slightly different. When Dak uses this ability, he channels magic through his hands and creates a storm of small, razor sharp icicles that pelt an enemy with hundreds of tiny, sharp projectiles. Dak has yet to fully master this ability and can only maintain it for a few seconds before he has to stop. It requires a large amount of energy to perform this attack and Dak can only use it a few times at one sitting.
Swordsmanship: Dak has been training in the art of swordsmanship for five years and though he has never been in a real swordfight, he possesses formidable fighting skills. Dak wields a single twenty inch sword and had adapted his fighting techniques for use of a single sword in combat. He does not know how to wield two swords at one time. Sometimes however, Dak will use his knife and sword simultaneously during training spars just to mix things up. Magic: Dak has been trained in the basic use of the Ancient Language. He is still learning though and still has yet to master advanced skills. he can do the basic stuff like make fire, throw projectiles with magic, etc.
Race: Tamen
Hair: Tawny fur all over his body.
Eyes: Light grey with slit cat-like pupil
Home Village: Zaflen, Tenya
Parents: Cadius (father) Isis (mother)
Siblings: None
Character Personality: Dak is a very easygoing fellow. He considers himself to be an easy person to get along with. However, Dak is still just a kid and sometimes acts childish or immature. He gets overly excited sometimes, like when he is sent away on a mission. Dak misses his family and plans to fly back to Zaflen with Mena to see them some day. Dak is considerably more intelligent than most tamens due to the magic bond he shares with Mena. He inherited many attributes of his partner including her magic abilities and intelligence. Despite possessing the intelligence of a gryphon, Dak is lazy, something that Mena is always criticizing him for. He hates having to get up every day to train and study and would rather be out soaring through the sky on Mena’s back and having fun. He hates it when she has to leave him to train with the master gryphons and hates being away from her. Dak loves his bonded partner very much and loves nothing more than spending time with her. Dak does not possess a great deal of bravery and sometimes wonders if he was cut out to be a Gryphon Rider. Mena has told him that fear is a natural part of life and that he will learn to master it in time, and that being afraid is nothing to be ashamed of. Dak’s greatest fear is that he will lose Mena. He has become dependent on her in his life and would be completely lost without her. Dak is extremely protective of Mena and despite his calm demeanor, the quickest way to send him into a blind rage is to harm her.
Character History: Dak was born in the city of Zaflen, Tenya. He grew up near the palace and dreamed of someday serving King Iaras as many other tamens did. However that all changed when he was ten years old. One day, representatives of the newly formed Gryphon Riders arrived in town and began searching for a new rider among the tamens in the city. As luck would have it, Dak was chosen and the gryphon egg hatched when he touched it. The chick was a female whom Dak called Mena because he thought it was a cute name at the time. She seemed to approve of the name though so it stuck. Dak was taken to the city of Kamona, an abandoned Dwarf city in the Boar Mountains which were serving as the base for the Gryphon Riders. There Dak trained and bonded with Mena. For five years he completed assignments given to him by his teachers, learning the ways of magic, combat, and how to care for his gryphon. After years of studying, Dak and Mena were finally sent on their first assignment. Their job was to collect plant samples from around the mountains, create fairths of them, and bring them back to Kamona. At first it seemed like a boring assignment. However, after several nights in the wilderness, they were jumped by a band of renegade urgals. The raiders snuck up behind Dak as he was hunting and struck him in the head, knocking him unconscious. Mena quickly rushed to her Rider’s air and confronted the urgals angrily. She attacked them without hesitation but the many urgals overpowered the young gryphon and after wrestling her to the ground, they proceeded to savagely beat her with a club, leaving her unconscious as well. Finding that the two had nothing of value, the urgals left, leaving the wounded gryphon and rider to die. Dak awoke some time later to find Mena lying unconscious on the ground, barely alive. Making matters worse, a pack of wolves had found them and the predators had their sights set on the injured gryphon. Dak has not been issues any weapons yet so all he had was his knife. Using everything he had, the young tamen desperately defended his friend from the hungry wolves but they kept pushing him back further and further until finally it seemed that the predators would overwhelm him and kill both he and Mena. In a desperate attempt to save his best friend, Dak tapped into his magic and released a massive blast of ice energy, shredding several of the wolves with icicles and frightening the rest away. Exhausted from the massive release of energy, Dak fell unconscious across Mena’s battered body. Hours later, they were found by Natagath and Violeta who were investigating reports of urgal raiders in the area. It took Dak and Mena days to recover even with the aid of magic. Mena had been so badly beaten that she was bleeding internally and would have died if Natagath and Violeta had not found her when they did. Dak realized how close he had come to losing his best friend and became fearful for her safety. Mena chided him for trying to be overly protective but Dak loves her more than anything else in the world. Soon after the urgal incident, Dak was given the chance to choose weapons for himself. He is currently still in training and looks forward to completing it.
Weapons:
Windfury- Dak carries a 36 inch sword called Windfury. The sword is made of very high quality dwarven steel and enchanted with magic to allow it to go up against a Dragon Rider’s sword without breaking. The sword is short to accommodate Dak’s small size. Windfury does not have a special blade color or anything. The sword has a gem in the pommel to store extra magic energy. Dak normally wears the sword across his back since it is too long to wear on his hip.
Bow and arrows- Dak was issued a Dwarven short bow by the Riders which was perfect for his small stature. Dak’s marksmenship skills still need to be improves upon and he has difficulty hitting targets at long range. He normally only uses the bow in an emergency.
Spear: Dax carries a steel-tipped spear when riding on Mena. The spear is four and a half feet long, the same height as Dak. Other than that there is really nothing remarkable about the spear. Dak carries it in case he needs fight someone in the air.
Elven dagger- Dak always carries a simple elven dagger with him. There is nothing fancy or special about it. Likes: Gryphons (especially Mena), having fun, flying, hunting, enjoying nature
Dislikes: Being scared, people trying to hurt Mena, having to study, being away from Mena.
Weakness / Fear: Dak is still in training and is not very strong yet. His biggest fear is that something will happen to Mena.
Animal Companions: None
Character's Physical Description: Like all tamens, Dak is small. His whole body is covered in tawny colored fur and he has a short mane around his neck. He is 4 feet 6 inches tall which is the average height for his race at his age. Dak has three fingers on each hand and each finger has a long claw on it. He has four toes on each foot which also have claws on each of toe. Dak's clothing consists of pants and a shirt made of tough leather. Dak also wears a leather harness over his clothing to secure him to Mena’s saddle when flying. He wears a leather helmet with a set of glass goggles to protect his eyes when flying. His sword is carried across his back while his dagger is carried in a sheath on his right thigh.
Dreams for the Future: To enjoy his life with Mena
Reason for Dreams: Because she is his best friend and he thinks they should always be together no matter what.
Alignment/side: The Gryphon Riders and the side of justice
Gryphon Name: Mena (pronounced Mee-nuh)
Age: 5 years at the time of the first RP I plan to use her in
Gender: Female
Parents: Unknown. She’s an orphan.
History: Mena’s exact origins are unknown. Her egg was found abandoned in the city of Zaflen in Tenya. The egg was given to the newly established Gryphon Riders to be bonded to a Rider. It didn’t take long for the egg to hatch for Dak, a ten year old tamen. Dak and Mena we immediately taken away to begin their training. Mena spent the first years of her life learning about gryphon culture as well as the other races that inhabit the land. She was taught to fly and fight and how to use her abilities. As Mena gained experience and learned, she began undertaking assignments with her Rider. Mena has proven to be a capable fighter and a force to be reckoned with. After nearly being killed by a band of renegade urgals, Mena decided not to rush into battle without first surveying the situation and making sure it is safe. Since the urgal incident, Mena has developed a fear and hatred for urgals in general. She has gone on several small assignments and is eager for her first big mission. Currently she is continuing her training and looks forward to the day she finishes.
Personality: Mena has a strong sense of pride that is common among her kind. She isn't exactly the most friendly gryphon in the world though. She is often snooty and self-righteous, always believing her way is the right way. She is also very vain. Mena is very picky about how she looks and spends great deals of time grooming herself. She considers gryphons to be above dragons but she knows better than to insult a dragon to their face. Mena hates being insulted. If you offend her, she probably won’t tear you to pieces right then and there but she will get you back one way or another, like sticking a severed deer head under your pillow while you’re sleeping. She does have a sense of humor though. Mena enjoys a good practical joke now and then, provided that she isn’t the one getting pranked. Mena is very patient, which is why she puts up with Dak’s shenanigans. She loves Dak very much and would do anything to protect him. She enjoys nothing more than spending time with her Rider, whether it be soaring high among the clouds or resting under a shady tree. Mena hates people who threaten her Rider and will go into a primal rage if you dare harm him. She also despises bullies and will not hesitate to put them in their place. Unlike most bonded pairs where the Rider is usually in charge, Mena is the dominate one here. Dak answers to her and she generally makes the decisions for the two of them. It might have something to do with the fact that gryphons are typically above Tamens on the social totem poll.
Color: See appearance.
Appearance: Like all gryphons, Mena is half raptor and half feline. Her front half is like an eagle while her back end, legs, and tail is like that of a lion. At five years of age, Mena is almost full grown. She is roughly horse sized, standing six feet tall and having a wingspan of twenty feet. Her feathers are light brown with black speckles . Her fur is a warm shade of tan. Her tail is like a lion tail except it has a feathered fan on the end rather than a tuft of hair. This aids her in flight and increases her maneuverability. The feathered fan on the end of the tail is a trait more common to cave gryphons and is rarely seen on other kinds of gryphons unless they have cave gryphon genes in them, meaning that one of her parents was probably a cave gryphon. Mena has piercing yellow eyes that are both beautiful and threatening. Her ears are like lynx ears, long and point with tuft of tan fur on the end. Mena has very soft and fluffy feathers, which is why Dak sometimes calls her “Fluffy” much to her dismay. Mena's talons and claws are all razor sharp and can slice through even tough dragon hides.
Armor: (if any) - When going on assignments, Mena usually wears a set of lightweight armor called “travel armor”. Because gryphons lack the tough scales and thick hides of dragons, this armor is commonly used by Gryphon Riders to protect their gryphons from projectiles like arrows and spears. Mena’s travel armor consists of segmented chest plates that cover her chest and stomach, and segmented plates that cover her sides. They protect vital organs but do not protect her whole body. Her armor also included segmented leg plating to protect her legs. There is chainmail netting between each of the armor segments to protect against swords or knives that might go in between the gaps. Mena has a helmet that covers her head except for her beak. There is a decorative diamond-shaped spike sticking out of the forehead of the helmet. Although it is mainly intended to be for decoration, it can be used as a weapon if Mena decided to head-butt you. The torso armor is attached together and folds up over her body, being held together by latches at the top.
Dreams for future: To become a mighty warrior and to proudly serve the Gryphon Riders
Reasons for dreams: She believes it is her destiny to fight evil and become a hero.
Weakness / Fear: There is not a whole lot that Mena is afraid of but she does fear that Dak’s child-like antics will get him into serious trouble. Mena is also afraid of urgals, after almost being beaten to death by them.

Captain Kirk: Alright men, this is a dangerous mission and it's likely one of us will be killed. The landing party will consist of myself, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and Ensign Ricky. Ensign Ricky: Aww crap!
