Post Keralin's journey around the world
I have been toying with this idea for a while now, as I was unsure if I should start creating cultures that CP wouldn't put in his book. But the idea's just started coming recently and I've been making back story for my character in my Role playing. I decided to make the story for those who are interested in what created my character, or for those who like a good story. This is the full story behind Keralin, Rider of Alagaesia.

Chapter 1:
There weren't many ships in the harbour. That was probably for the best, less to be noticed by the rest of the world. The small ocean town of Maenir located north of Carvahall had very few Elves living there. Most to prepare people like Keralin for their journey across the great sea, to the distant lands of their ancestors. The lands were safe because of the riders but the sea was not protected as someone that didn't know the stars well would get lost, and one could not scry the stars. While this place had its own charm to it, it was the same as every other elven town Keralin had seen. He hefted his backpack and shifted his sword on his waist slightly getting into a more comfortable position. Keralin stared at the massive ship as it was packed with food, water and various other items he couldn't recognise. He looked to his left and saw the other travellers going with him. Few were travelling like him and they had only what they needed to take with them. The rest were deck hands and guards. He was amazed but he amount of people needed to run just one ship. Keralin thought briefly of whom he was leaving behind, his mother and father, his friends. The captain finally ordered everyone onto the ship and showed the travellers where their quarters were and where they were and weren't allowed. After the short tour the captain went back to his original duties and before long they were finally on their way to distant lands.

Post Keralin's journey around the world
The trip across the ocean wasn't as exiting as Keralin had hoped. Just repetitive bobbing up and down, up and down. A few of the travelers vomited from sea sickness, including Keralin once but after that he was fine for the rest of the trip. Through the days he woke up in the morning, had a small breakfast and watched the ocean go past. A few days he just sat in the bunk and let his mind wander with the dolphins swimming on the wake of the boat. Twenty days later Keralin found himself on the shores of a strange new land, new customs and new places to explore. The first town however was the welcoming town of Panellia which to say had a splendor of itself. The castle walls were made of extremely hardened wood similar to those found in a fireplace. They had intricate patterns and designs on them that resembled the forest around them with flowers climbing their whole way up. The captain spoke to the tourists about the wall, and how it had to be grown because of the constant raids on the harbor. He explained that this land was fraught with war and death.
"Nobody goes outside of the walls except those who are tending the crops and transporting messages. A few others have left the walls and never returned."
Keralin thought that the speech was obviously to scare the visitors to stay inside where they could keep an eye on them. He wasn't going to be intimidated by a petty speech.
Besides, I can take care of myself. Keralin thought to himself while buckling on his sword. It took a bit of convincing to get the guard to let him out, but once he was out he knew that a whole new world awaited him and he intended to learn everything about it.

Chapter 2

When Keralin finally got out of the walls encompassing the city the first thought he had was What in the name of everything good happened here? There was no farmland of any sort, there was nothing. The ground beneath him was burned and stained with blood. There were no trees or grass anywhere for miles, not a scrap of life. It seemed that even the micro-organisms that inhabit the soil had died. Just standing there felt offensive to Keralin, but he couldn't bring himself to move either. He understood at that moment why nobody came back into the city, because they knew that the elves had torn the life away from here to make their shell away from the outside world. Nobody would be able to look at the inhabitants of this land in the same way again. Keralin finally regained the will to move again, and the only way he moved was away from that place of death. He moved quickly, desperate to get off the dead land. It didn't take him long before he was back in the trees with life teeming around him. The life around him made him feel energised again, gave him confidence that every place wasn't like this.

Keralin travelled for one month at least, mapping the land as he went. He held a device a device that the captain called a compass. The red needle always pointed to the north, so Keralin knew which way to draw his map. It also told him that he was travelling west. He came upon a path that lead through the forest made of stone. Keralin knew the humans of Alagaesia made paths like this when it was travelled often. That gave him hope that there was an important town nearby. Problem was, he didn't know which way that was. After a bit of thinking he decided to head north along the road. The air smells different here. Thought Keralin as he walked. He recognised the smell but he couldn't put his finger on it. He kept walking, the smell getting stronger. There was a certain fog around the air now, making things hazy. Then it hit him, the smell he was smelling was smoke. Keralin wondered about the wisdom of walking into a potential battle zone. He didn't have long to think about it as a grotesque shape ran out of the tall grass surrounding the path. It had scales, claws, diminutive wings that looked as if they could only be used for gliding, red eyes, and a face resembling a dragon. But it walked on two legs, holding a sword in one claw. It stood right in front of him, holding it's sword at Keralin. Keralin kept his eyes on that thing, but kept his ears open listening to the two creatures behind him. They stood there for a few seconds before the one in front said in a guttural voice and extremely bad accent,
"Stay still and you won't die."
"What do you want?" Said Keralin quickly.
The beast narrowed its eyes and approached Keralin carefully measuring the distance between them.
"Everything you have."

Sometimes I wonder if anyone gets my style of writing... To answer the questoin bluntly, it is WAYYY before. This was when he first left Alagaesia some 300 years ago. Before Aelir's egg came into existence.

OOC: I'm not upset, in fact I'm happy. I would never be able to better my writing skills without truthful observations like that. You told me that I have to make things like that more apparant when I am writing.

Chapter 3
There is no way I am going to let that happen. Thought Keralin. Everything he had was everything he needed, travelling light as the humans might say. He shifted his stance a little, in order to give himself the maanoverability he needed but not so much to indicate he was going to fight back. A rustle went through the tall grass around him, the wind touching everything except the warriors preparing for battle. The creature moved slowly, carefully, measuring each step. Keralin ran the battle ahead through his mind over and over, making sure that nothing would surprise him. A few more steps and Keralin could make his move. The worst thing that could happen to a warrior is being made to wait, the blood pumping through his body increasing every sense in his body. Finally the creature took the final step. He was in range now for Keralin to strike, and strike he did.

Keralin shifted his feet and charged the creature unsheathing his blade with a speed that made his sword ring. Flawless. Keralin thought quickly, even though he had killed one, there were still two others waiting. He turned in time to see a spear being hurled at him, but he didn't move quickly enough to avoid it. The spear impaled itself in Keralin's right leg. It hurt much more than a spear should have, no matter what design the metal was. It drove Keralin to the ground, incapacitating him. He rose his head up from looking at the wound and saw a sight that he had never seen before. A group of battle armoured humans attacking the creatures with a precision that would have made Elven tactics seem like child's play. The two creatures were dead within seconds, one of the soldiers came up to Keralin and asked if he needed help.
"No, I'll be fine. I can heal myself." Keralin said to the soldier. He broke off the spear and pulled it out. The pain was still more intense than it should have been, but it was bearable. He shooed the soldiers crowding around him, trying to get a look. Keralin placed his hands over the wound and spoke the words "Weise Heill". At first the healing was going well then it started draining his power faster and faster. Keralin was losing energy fast, the stubborn wound refusing to heal. Keralin used what little energy he had left to cut the magic from killing him. He succeeded only moments before losing consciousness.

Chapter 4

Images flashed before Kealin's eyes. The sky ablaze with fire only to have the light vanish behind stone. A woman sitting beside him with beautiful green eyes. Strange people with golden robes that fluttered past their feet. A majestic blue dragon flying in the skies. A bald man putting herbs on his leg. Keralin had no idea if he was seeing the present or past memories. Some of the images Keralin didn't recognize, but he dismissed those as fragments from his imagination. Keralin couldn't remember much of what happened. He even doubted for a second if the name was his or someone else's. Keralin knew he had to wake, but he couldn't. Something or someone was stopping him. Am I dead? Keralin wondered suddenly. It didn't seem like he expected it. Did I really expect something different or was that what someone else told me?

Keralin's thoughts headed round in circles for what seemed like hours until a voice, as clear as day is from night, pierced the confusion.
Who are you? The voice asked.
I think my name is Keralin if that's what you're asking. Where am I? Keralin thought he'd better ask quickly.
Alive. The voice answered. Keralin felt a moment of vertigo and a slight concern emanating from the other voice. I would have you awaken for a time so you can gather your thoughts. Be careful though, your body is recovering slowly.
The pressure keeping Keralin down was suddenly lifted and he could feel his body again. The first thing he felt was pain, excruciating pain coming from his leg. Keralin gathered himself and forced the pain to the back of his mind, he knew he had to awaken.

Keralin managed to open his eyes. The first thing he saw was a human standing over him with his hands around Keralin's head. The man had golden robes and a shaved head, he looked fragile, as if he would break a bone if he stepped the wrong way. He wasn't young, yet he wasn't old. Keralin had spent some time with humans and had learned to tell the age groups apart. The man looked forty years old at least. He spoke in the same voice that he heard inside his head.
"Welcome back, Keralin. My name is Leo."
Keralin looked at Leo with a puzzled look on his face. He looked familiar, in an abstract sort of way. He remembered with a start when he was semi-conscious, all the images he had seen.
"Yo-" Keralin tried to speak and ended up sputtering and coughing, sending pains all through his body.
"Easy son, you are still recovering. You got quite a nasty wound there, almost killed you." Leo said, with a smile on his face. "Almost killed us too..." He added in an undertone. Leo's face turned grim, losing his warming smile.
"Sleep. We know you're going to live now." Leo said again, the joy returning to his face. Keralin however, didn't hear a word past 'sleep' as he did so quickly.

Eek... From the way you're writing, you may include Eriel much later on in the story hm? Well, if you want to, you have my go-ahead.

This story just gets better and better.

Post Re: Keralin's journey around the world
Chapter 5

After Keralin woke up for the first time in weeks, according to the magicians who called themselves 'Mages', Keralin's recovery went much faster. Keralin also learned several things while recovering. He found out that he was staying as a royal guest in the castle. The city was called Unfrecia (Oon-free-see-a). Keralin said he wanted to see the city when he was better and the Mages were more than happy to oblige. In three days Keralin was able to sit up and eat without vomiting. Another three days and Keralin could walk, with the help of a crutch, and move to the window. Even though Keralin loved nature, he couldn't help but love the city the humans created. He looked out at the city when the sun was only just setting. The light glittered off the rooftops made of stone making the houses twinkle in the distance and the light wisps clouds in the sky glow. The sky was a beautiful shade of orange and blue while the birds in the sky dove at the ocean just beyond the walls. Keralin wished he could make a fairth of this moment, so he could keep it for all time. The sun moved out of view and the world was plunged into darkness, although that didn't make the city any less beautiful. Lights in the street were lit as well as lights in the houses, giving the city below a serene feel as if one were looking up at the stars. Keralin stood there, leaning on his crutch, looking at the city made of stone. He thought briefly that the Dwarves would have loved it here. Keralin was snapped out of his revere by a slight tap on his shoulder. Keralin turned around and saw Leo looking at him with an amused look on his face.
"It's beautiful isn't it?" Leo said softly.
"It's amazing. My people have their own charming sights, but this is truly spectacular." Keralin lost his words and looked back at the city.
"You've come at the perfect time, this time of year the sun sets and rises at just the perfect angles. At this time of year we celebrate all the beauty that this world has to offer us."
Keralin couldn't believe this society existed. It was overwhelming to even try. He didn't ponder this long as his leg started to ache from standing on it for so long. Leo saw this and escorted Keralin back to his bed. A thought entered Keralin's mind then, something that had been bothering him for some time. After he was put onto the bed Keralin asked Leo;
"Do you know you can heal wounds with magic?"
The question caught Leo completely off guard, at least that's what Keralin saw in his posture when he stiffened. Leo looked back at him with sad eyes.
"I knew you would ask the question eventually, I had just hoped it wasn't so soon." Leo started stoftly, his voice losing it's firmness. As he spoke he couldn't help but cry. "Yes, we can heal using magic and the reason we haven't healed you is because we cannot. One of us tried, his name was Naej'al (Na-eeg all). He devoted himself to healing others, so when we met you he devoted to healing you. At first the process was going well, as all the other healings happened. Then the process took all of Naej'al's strength, we tried to keep him alive by feeding our power but we knew he was doomed. He died trying to heal you." By the end Leo's face was wet and his body almost shaking.
Keralin couldn't believe what he had heard. He remembered using his own magic to heal himself and he failed. Keralin's hands started to shake then. He had never known anyone who had died, nor known anyone who had been with someone who had died. By Elf standards Keralin was still young and the knowledge that someone had given their life for him was near unthinkable. Keralin felt as if he had to say something, anything to help ease the pain. All he managed was;
"I'm sorry. I should never have come here."
Leo looked up at him and said gently, "It is not your fault that he is dead. He was a good man who did good deeds and died trying to do something to help another. It was what he wanted." Leo paused for a moment. "Everyone in town mourns for Naej'al, we just all hope his spirit to help others will touch the hearts all people, whether they be Elf, Human or other."

Post Re: Keralin's journey around the world
Chapter 6

Keralin may have been healing on the surface, but a plague was destroying his sanity. His mind was racked with sadness and guilt. Keralin had robbed someone of their life, someone who could have gone on to heal many others. He didn't get up the next morning, or the morning after that. On the third morning Keralin went back to the window and looked over the city again to show himself that even though one person had died there was much beauty left. Unfortunately, when Keralin looked at the sunset the buildings sparkled as they did before but they held little wonder. The magic was gone from the air as was the life that the clouds held. Keralin leaned against the window and looked down. The fall was clearly long enough. Coward!
Yelled something within his head. Keralin knew the voice, it was his own.
What point is there in ending my life? It would make Naej'al's sacrifice worthless. Keralin looked at his leg. It had healed on the outside, the skin nothing more than a scar now. The muscles inside were still patching themselves together. It would limp for the rest of his life but at least he could walk without his crutch anymore. He stepped away from the window and walked uneasily to the door. Keralin opened it slowly feeling magic in its touch. Someone would be coming to check on him, for what purpose though Keralin had no idea. He was told he was a guest that when he could he would be able to leave. He peered out carefully mapping the corridor with his mind. Before Keralin could take another step though a lance of pain went shooting through his leg and up his body.

The next thing Keralin knew he was lying on his bed, with a glass of water on the bed next to him. He rose up fast, looking around him. He was relieved that he was still in the castle room, yet unnerved by it. The strangest thing though was that Keralin felt good. Thinking about the man that sacrificed his life for him still made him sad, but otherwise he felt better than he had in a very long time. He pushed his legs carefully over the side of the bed, testing how well he could walk. The pain was still there but it was softer than it was before. At least I'm getting used to it. Keralin thought grimly. Taking the water Keralin downed the whole glass and stood up. Maybe now he could tour the castle. He looked over at the hourglass. Leo was about to come again and give him some breakfast. Keralin lay back on the bed again and looked up at the roof, thinking about what he would do when he could travel again. Leo walked in the door just a few minutes later carrying a plate of vegetables and fruits, all exotic with their curious tastes and shapes. Keralin thanked him and asked;
"What happened to me in the hall?"
Leo replied with a friendly voice "You weren't ready to walk so far. As far as I can tell your body is shutting out the pain as best it can so you can do what you need to. When you moved without your crutch you placed so much strain on your leg that your body couldn't keep it blocked any longer."
"Well I feel better now. Do you have a library or anything here?"
Leo raised his eyebrows "Of course we do! I am not boasting when I say that it has almost every piece of information in the land. Would you like to see it when you're done with your breakfast?"
"Definitely." Replied Keralin with enthusiasm. Then Keralin's face darkened a little a when he thought about Naej'al. "Also, if you could, place a flower on Naej'al's grave. For me."
Leo's face expressed pity, sadness and compassion. "Of course. I can do that."

Chapter 7

The library was bigger than Keralin had expected. From first glance he could tell the Leo was not lying when he said there was almost every piece of information here. Books on biology, books about the different pants and herbs, the different races with their cultures and so forth. All arranged magnificently neat and ordered. Keralin at first didn't know where to start, so he sat himself in the middle and just looked. He didn't envy the person who had to keep a count on all the books, or the one that had to clean them all. But he thought it would have been a very satisfying job reading as you cleaned or counted. Thinking like this made him choose which books to read first, races and cultures. Keralin spent many days there, just reading the different literature pieces and facts about the land. He learned that the creatures that attacked him were called Draconians, who were once dragons but were twisted by certain spells to serve some unknown cause. They had a land and culture of their own now, making their own way in the world as the rest of the races did. Keralin wondered if that was how the different races were created at the beginning, if they were just a mistake. Keralin kept reading however, and kept learning about the people of the land.

During Keralin's time there his leg had healed almost completely, leaving a lasting pain and limp. He wasn't going to let this small inconvenience stop him from doing what he wanted to. Finding a new strength he had not had before Keralin decided to start training with his sword again. He also admitted to himself that he was getting out of shape. As always, Leo showed him to the training fields within the castle. The fields were small with a few fenced off areas where trainers and warriors fought slowly with practised movements. Keralin was disappointed though as it was only the noblemen who fought and they fought poorly.
"These people won't be fighting any battles, are there any that will fight if the city comes under attack?" Keralin asked impatiently.
Leo looked at Keralin strangely, with a certain curiosity. "These people will fight and they will fight well. Though it is easier for them as they pay for patience. Tell you what," Leo said with a smile growing on his face, "if you can beat all these people in a duel then I'll get you our most advanced trainer. Is that acceptable?"
"I was hoping not to waste so much time. I'll show you that I have recovered from my sickness."
Leo called over one of the trainers who was waiting for their student to come back from the outhouse.
Leo spoke quickly to the trainer, who nodded his head and looked at Keralin.

He's seen battle before. Thought Keralin, noting the way he walked. Keralin and the trainer went over towards the duelling pit in the corner of the field. It wasn't exactly a pit, more of a fenced off area that held no grass. The trainer introduced himself as Raellem (Ra-el-em). Raellem drew his sword, which was of an exotic design, having a long blade that was thin and slightly curved. Raellem said that it was called a 'Katana'. Keralin drew his sword of Elven make. Keralin could tell that the humans here had never seen a blade like his by the look on Raellem's face. Not to mention the crowd that gathered around the pit. Both warriors went into their separate stances, slowly circling each other, not knowing how the other was going to fight. Keralin had all the time in the world and waited for Raellem to make the first move. Raellem, being human, couldn't wait for long and charged Keralin angling his sword in a curious manner. Keralin responded by sidestepping and letting the sword fly past him.
Humans always move slow. Thought Keralin disappointedly. Raellem was still recovering from missing, so Keralin brought his elbow to Raellem's back. Raellem was paralysed for a moment when he was struck, letting Keralin take his sword and bring it down on him. Keralin let the sword rest on Raellem's shoulder, indicated that if this was a real fight his head would be a few meters away by now.

Keralin went on for about an hour defeating the different trainers, some posing more of a challenge than the others. After defeating the sixth trainer Keralin said to Leo that he would have to come back tomorrow as his leg was starting to pain him. Leo escorted him to the library again and left Keralin to his studies again.

Post Re: Keralin's journey around the world
Thanks, I still have other major events to explain his behaviour. Where have you been?

Chapter 8

The next day Keralin's leg was paining him so he went straight to the library instead. He went away from his normal studies of the cultures of the land and went to botany instead. Keralin knew that some plants in his land would heal wounds whilst others would kill. He was hoping to find a plant that would help dull the pain, or cure it. A footnote caught his attention, about a plant called Celivess.
The plant itself was poisonous, killing anything that had the misfortune to eat it. With proper magic the properties could be changed to have a crippling effect leaving a lasting pain. Also when changed with magic this plant will take any energy directed into it.
Keralin thought that was what have done it. He resolved to find a treatment for this plant and began reading with a passion.

Keralin was staring off the final trainer off in the duelling yard. The trainer was obviously much better than the rest as he didn't charge headlong into combat. But he was still human, so he made the first move against Keralin. He swung his sword in an odd fashion, bypassing Keralin's defences and hitting him in his side. Keralin returned the blow with three attacks to the trainer's sword arm. It caused the trainer to drop his sword, forcing him to surrender to Keralin. Keralin berated himself for leaving his guard open, he had gotten lazy and over confident. Good thing they blunted the swords beforehand otherwise Keralin would have a nasty wound. He sheathed his sword and turned to Leo who, from the look on his face, was very impressed with Keralin's sword-play.
"Very well, you have defeated all the trainers here so I'll hold my end of the bargain and get the most advanced trainer here."
"'Here' as in within the castle or 'here' as in the whole city.
"As in the whole city. Don't worry, I know just the person. As for now, feel free to do whatever you wish to do within the castle walls. If you need help getting somewhere ask a guard." Leo bowed respectfully to Keralin and went off on his way, leaving Keralin standing in the field by himself. Smiling to himself Keralin looked back at the crowd around him and asked,
"Anyone care to try their blade against me?" The crowd dispersed immediately going about their duties or pleasures. Keralin decided to go for a walk around the castle to find out what other wonders this place held.

Without even realising it Keralin had walked back to the library. He didn't feel like reading at this time so he just sat down at one of the chairs and enjoyed the silence, apart from the few rustles that was to be expected in libraries. By his own calendar he had spent nearly two months here. An insignificant time compared to Elves but quite a time according to humans. I had best get used to judging myself by human standards. Keralin thought to himself. Unfortunately that also meant that he should be leaving soon. An off thought appeared in his mind at that time, he hadn't used magic in a long time. Keralin got up off his chair and headed back out of the library and asked a guard if there was an area where people practised magic. The guard was happy to show him the way. A few twists and turns and they were in a large room with many obstacles, all of which needed magic to use or get past. There were quite a number of lightly clothed figures in the room, all of which were using magic without words. A touch of fear gripped Keralin as he watched the untamed magic being thrown around. A robed person walked up to him and greeted him. They introduced themselves as Mirden (Me-eerr-din).
"Why aren't you using the ancient language? Don't you know there could be dangerous repercussions?" Keralin asked frantically.
"The ancient language? What is that?" Asked Mirden.
"How much history do you know? How far back does it go?"
"Well, it would have been when this land was first founded, about three hundred years ago."
"Well, in my land we can amplify our magical powers by using a language we call the ancient language. We don't know what the language is actually called but we know most of what it entails. If you'd like I could teach the words to you."
"Often I have heard that the Elves use a language that they can use with magic. We thought it was something else that gave them the edge in magical battles, when all the time it was just language. Yes, I would love to learn. I'm also sure that many others here would like to learn this language." Mirden said excitedly.
"I'll tell you now though that this language has two drawbacks. One is that you cannot lie. The other is that if you make a promise in it you cannot break it or else it will kill you." Keralin wasn't about to let more people die because of his mistakes, but it would probably be better if they used it.
"We can accept those limitations. Please come here tomorrow at midday, we will listen then."
"I'll be there" With that Keralin and Mirden bowed to each other and left. Keralin went back to bed that night happy.

Chapter 9

Keralin woke up early, so early in fact that the sun was not visible on the horizon yet. Keralin tried to return to his slumber but he could not, even though he was extremely tired. He decided to get up after a few minutes after his mind started to work again. He rubbed his leg, feeling the scar left there.
Will it ever be the same again? He wondered silently. Keralin walked over to the window, pulling on his shirt and yawning. The city was much different than he saw it last, there was the twinkle of the street lights, a few guard patrols and a light on the horizon. The sun was always a welcome sight to Keralin. He enjoyed the fact that it gave lift to everything, ridding the darkness from the land.
Wait, the sun rises on the other side of the castle. What could... A flood of memories came rushing back to him, from when he was first injured.
Keralin lay on a stretcher, listening to the soldiers complain at their commanding officer.
"Why are we saving this Elf?" The soldier nearly spat out the word. "No matter how many messengers we send they never reply! Why should we care about them if they won't care about us?" A couple of the other soldiers agreed.
"Because, we finally have a chance to enlist their help. If anyone, this Elf will be able to get through the walls and deliver our message. If not though, we have a hostage." The commander looked nervous, as if he was balancing his orders with the morale of his company.
"And if he dies before we get him to Unfrecia?"
"Then we better hope that we can last until the Laenuru (Lain-oo-roo) get here." The sky was lit with the colour of fire, the disappeared behind a large stone archway.

"He's in no condition to wake yet! If he is to survive he needs to preserve his energy for healing." A frustrated whisper penetrated the silence, which in turn was replied by a calming voice.
"I know, but he need to know why we are the ones taking care of him. What if he turns out to be hostile towards the proposition? We can hold him but not for long, we don't have that kind of power."
"We will see, the Draconians have agreed to the cease-fire for now, but they will be back. We need the help of his people, surely he can understand the need to save lives."
Keralin gave a slight groan, the voices hushed mid-sentence. Then the world was dark again, his consciousness being pushed into a comatose state.

Keralin juggled these new memories with the previous ones he had. They were his alright, but there was something seriously wrong about it all. I'll ask Leo when he comes, if he doesn't give me a straight answer I will tear down these walls. Keralin's insides were beginning to churn, his blood heating up. Then as if on cue, Leo arrived through the door.
"Keralin, you're awake." He was taken aback, his eyes wide with shock. His face returned to his happy medium and he spoke with his pleasant tone. "I was... I guess it doesn't matter now, you've seen the fires on the horizon."
"Yes, I have. Why did you hide this from me, and why haven't you told me what you were planning!?" Keralin tried to keep quiet but he couldn't help but be taken by his anger. He reached into his magical power and spoke in his native tongue. "Jierda!" The force of his attack sent Leo flying across the room, landing near the stairwell. Leo had a look of resignation on his face as if he was prepared to die. His voice was low, and he spoke as if the next words would be the last;
"Because you are the last hope we had for saving ourselves."
Keralin stopped mid-stride and looked at Leo, he was not lying. Keralin's anger melted away. The pain in his leg had returned but it was promptly ignored.
"Leo, I- I'm sorry."

Post Re: Keralin's journey around the world
Chapter 10 (wow, ten chapters!)

Emotions and turbulent thoughts ran through Keralin's body like an ever flowing waterfall, taking him to unknown shores. They expect me to return to Panellia, the secluded elven city. I can't go back, no I won't go back. Keralin had thought this thought a thousand times only to respond to himself with If you don't go back they'll use you as a hostage. A better impression would be to act as a messenger. But how can they expect me to go back?
Feelings of betrayal came when he thought of Leo, feelings of longing when he thought of home, feelings of hate when he thought of the great wall around Panellia. The sun was at it highest now, spreading its light across all the land. A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Keralin sighed and cleared his emotions as best he could before answering. What good would being angry at these people do? None at all was Keralin's answer.
"Who's there?" Keralin asked with a carefully measured tone.
The reply was quick and the voice familiar. "Mirden. I was wondering if were coming to teach us."
Caught up in his thoughts Keralin had completely forgot about his agreement to teach the magi the ancient language.
"I'm sorry, I had forgotten about it while thinking on a certain predicament. I'll come now." Keralin quickly put on some better clothes than the ones he went to bed in. Keralin glanced at his sword, wondering whether to bring it or not. He thought better of it and decided to leave it where it sat.

"Adurna. Listen to the word. Adurna." Keralin waited for the class to repeat it once. "Good. Adurna means water... Well, it IS water. Knowing the name of something in the ancient language gives you complete control over it. By knowing Adurna you can control water to do whatever you want it to do." Keralin beckoned for a bucket of water to be brought to him.
"Adurna" he said in a commanding tone. The water rose out of the bucket keeping its shape. "Now I know this is nothing special, using the ancient language would be an inhibition to some of you. But it will help all of you in some way." Keralin continued his lesson throughout the rest of the day and some of the night. Teaching them the names of everything he knew about and what the result would end with. By the end he had used so much magic that he needed help walking up the stairs.
Next time, he thought tiredly I won't use so much of myself. Keralin was about to sleep when another knock on the door roused him.
"Yes? Who is it?" Keralin said impatiently, but kindly.
"Its me, Leo." The voice came back quietly and shamefully.
"I have no time for you."
"Just hear me out please. It was not my decision to keep you in the dark, I-" Leo just faded out then, leaving Keralin in the silence of his room. "We need you, our people are going to die if we don't get any help. Would your people have done any different?"
The question burned in Keralin's head, what would have been done differently? He couldn't think of anything that could have been done. He walked over towards the door and opened it. Keralin looked into the eyes of Leo who looked as if he had been through as tough a time as Keralin.
"Nothing else could be done. I-I'm sorry Leo..." Keralin couldn't continue, his mind too grief-filled to make a coherent statement. He didn't seem to have the energy to keep his head up.
"It's ok, I forgive you for what you did." Leo said through his heart-warming smile. He placed a hand on Keralin's shoulder. Keralin shuddered as if the touch pained him. "Will you be able to forgive yourself?"
Keralin closed his eyes and felt the tears starting to brim his eyes. He took a deep breath and looked Leo in the eyes. All he saw was the kindness that had been there ever since they had met. Keralin knew he wasn't worthy to be in Leo's presence, but he hadn't the heart to retreat from his position. The turbulence in his gut stopped as did the heart-wrenching emotions that circled through him.
"I don't know. Maybe some day when I have proved myself worthy."
"You need to rest, as do we all. Tomorrow will be better, don't you worry." With that Leo departed, leaving Keralin alone with his feelings and the sorrow he placed upon himself.

Post Re: Keralin's journey around the world
Chapter 11

Keralin got up early, on purpose this time. He stared at the glow on the horizon that was fading in the rays on the sun. A week and three days had passed since Keralin had made amends to Leo. During that time Keralin had been training with his new trainer, teaching the magi how to use the ancient language and studying different styles of fighting. He had not had much time to himself, being occupied with the army sitting just outside the gates and along the shore. Soon he would have to go back to Panellia, the city of the Elves. He wanted to go anywhere but there again, but he knew that he had no choice. What do I owe these people? He thought as a last option. His own answer was more painful than he had expected. You owe them your life! You're only alive because of them! Naej'al gave his life for you. Keralin couldn't help himself from crying then. He had torn open an old wound and it was bleeding furiously. If anything, I'll do it for Naej'al. He decided. It helped slightly, but not much. Now that he was better, he could visit Naej'al's grave. Keralin wandered through the castle, picked up a flower from a pot that was standing there and went to the graveyard.

It was hard walking through the gate. Many people had been buried here, and very soon, many more. Naej'al's grave was easy to find as it had a statue of his resemblance at the end of it. It had palms facing outwards as if welcoming whoever was approaching. Keralin walked slowly up to the grave, and knelt before it. He placed the flower on his grave and sat there for a few moments more. Then the words that he wanted to say came to him; "I never knew you, yet according to what others have told me, you were a great man. You died trying to save me and for that I am indebted to you, and through you, to this city." With that Keralin stood and left the graveyard, his body feeling lighter than it ever had.

"Please wait Keralin, it is still not safe." Leo said with a look of concern on his face.
"Don't worry Leo, you know what I am capable of." Keralin said strapping on his new sword, made by the magi.
"Yes, and you ended up in a bed here."
"Well, that won't be happening with the bodyguard I've been given. Three of your finest warriors." Leo couldn't argue with him anymore. He wanted to wait for a few more days, yet Keralin insisted that he leave as soon as possible as the army could attack at any given time. Keralin put on his backpack and walked over to Leo. "I will miss you my friend. You have been nothing but kind to me over this past year."
"No words can explain my sorrow. May your journey be a safe one. Make sure you come back even if your people don't."
"You know I will. Goodbye." Keralin embraced Leo.
"Farewell."
With that Keralin left the city of Unfrecia through a back passage and started his long journey to Panellia. It was going to be much faster than before as Keralin had a map of the area and a curious device called a compass that always pointed in the same direction. Keralin took one last look at the city, then moved on with his guards.

Post Re: Keralin's journey around the world
Chapter 12:

Keralin hated this place. He hated it with every fibre of his being. He had made up a name for it, 'The Dead Fields', where no life could exist. A tree had fallen into the circle around the city and while there was life on it, it was diminishing rapidly. The two soldiers escorting Keralin were on edge at the sight of this place. It was clear that they doubted if the Elves would defend anything other than themselves. Keralin took a deep breath and walked over the crusted land, every step feeling more perverted than the last. The walls had stubs growing from them now, angling downwards. It gave the area a sense of evil. Keralin shook his head of such thoughts and continued walking. A bird flew overhead, circling them. Keralin reaching his mind out to it to find out what it was doing here. He was surprised to find that the bird had mental defences, strong ones at that. The bird retreated into the city after that, moving very quickly. Figures could be seen on the walls now, Elves with arrows ready to be fired. Keralin yelled in the ancient language;
"I will not attack you unless you mean to harm me or my escort!" Keralin wanted to be sure that he would be able to act if necessary. A door opened up in the wall and a group of pikemen and archers rushed out, surrounding them. A man dressed in slightly shinier armor walked up to them and spoke in a demanding voice.
"Why are you here?"
"We have come to ask for your help." Keralin removed the cloak over his head to reveal that he was an elf. The commander raised his eyebrows for a moment then lowered them to their original position.
"Help with what?"
"There is an army outside the human gates Unfrecia." Keralin recited the message. "It is large and if they decide to attack we will not survive. We have come to ask for your aid in our struggle to survive."
"Why do you say 'we' when you are clearly not with them." The commander sounded almost like he was mocking the humans.
"Because, I have lived in the city for a long time, at least according to their lifespan. I have grown to enjoy their customs as well as to love the city and its people. They are as much my people now as the Elves in Du Weldenvarden."
The commander sighed. "I will take you to speak with the council, they will decide."
"We don't have a lot of time, it has to be done either today or tomorrow." Keralin's voice was strained with concern and urgency.
"Very well." The commander made a few gestures to his soldiers and they lowered their weapons. Keralin and the two humans were escorted into the city.

After a night's stay at a barely furnished tavern Keralin was summoned to the council chamers. Keralin was nervous, while he was convinced he would be able to made them come to Unfrecia's aid he was worried if he could make them come within a few days time. The world of man moves faster than the world of elves. Keralin walked through the corridors of wood, the paths between flowers. He was led to a large door, which was surprisingly covered in steel. The doors opened wide, revealing a large chamber with a semi-circle table, chairs on the outside, and a single chair in the middle. Keralin knew that it was his place to sit in the middle. It was dark in the room, the only lights visible were the the lanterns sitting upon the table and the one pointing downwards onto the middle chair. The rest was covered in darkness so that it seemed that if one were to step off the light he would plunge into the unknown. The walls on the other side were not visible. Keralin walked quickly to the chair in the middle before the light streaming in from outside was closed off by the doors. Keralin sat down rather uncomfortably. There were thirteen elves in total sitting at the semi-circle desk, eight male and five female. Arranged with two males either side of each female, with the odd female elf in the middle. She was obviously the representative. She stood up and adressed the entire room.
"This is the hearing of Keralin of Du Weldenvarden for military aid for the city of Unfrecia." She paused momentarily before continuing. "Keralin, you may address the council now."
Keralin was unsure of how to address the council. An uneasiness settled in Keralin's stomach and he was unable to be rid of it. It took nearly all of his courage to stand and use his voice.
"Council members, I have come on request of the Magi of Unfrecia to plead for your aid. A mighty foe has arrived at their doorstep and they are unable to survive without military aid." After saying this and not recieving any looks of distaste Keralin relaxed.
"Who is the force attacking and for what reason do we have to go to their aid?"
"First, when I was wounded and dying their healers revived me. One, whose name was Naej'al, died in the process." Keralin's mind drifted to the memory of the statue. He did not notice the look of astonishment cross some of the concil members' faces. "Second, they will aid you in any endeavor you might have in order to return the debt owed. And finally these people will share with you the myriad of books they have collected over the years. The wealth of knowledge contained is greater than any I have dreamed of. I have spent days reading and have only just scratched the surface."
"You have made three valid points Keralin, we shall have to consider this. You are free to leave unless you have more to add." She waved her hand and the doors opened of their own accord.
"I do have more to add, this city is about to be attacked at any day. These forces are required within the next three days or else you will be too late."
"Your advisement is taken, is there any other information we should know?"
"No."
"Then return to your lodgings and we will call for you at a later date."
Keralin was about to protest when he felt a hand on his shoulder, leading him out of the chambers. Sighing he accepted that it was now out of his hands.

Post Re: Keralin's journey around the world
OOC: I tried to get that writer's block surgically removed, it worked for a time but it came back in force. Now I'm trying a herbal remedy... :D

Keralin paced in his makeshift room, he tried to get some sleep before but failed miserably. He kept telling himself that staying awake wouldn't make the council go any faster. An odd thought entered his mind, he thought about the soldiers that accompanied him and decided to see if they were alright. Keralin gathered his gear and opened the door only to be met with a guard standing just outside. Why would I need a guard? Keralin thought offhandedly.
"Can I help you with anything?" The guard offered in a kind voice. His body movements however betrayed him, he kept shifting his weight from one foot to the other and his hands flexed over his sword slightly. Keralin decided to play along for the moment.
"I'd like to see my escort, the humans that brought me here." He said it calmly as if he hadn't noticed a thing.
"Certainly, one moment." The guard replied. He waved to some shadows and three more guards appeared from near nowhere.
"That common for around here?" Keralin still tried to figure out what was thought of him.
"No, but there have been disturbing activities recently. We've had trouble keeping the outlaws from Alagaesia out." The guard's tone suggested that he wasn't going to saw more. Keralin shrugged his shoulders and allowed himself to be led away. As it turned out they weren't far from his room, only in the next tree which was connected by a stern rope bridge. Two of the guards went first, then Keralin, then the last two. It was concerning the was the guards kept looking everywhere around them as if expecting an attack but Keralin kept his level head. Unfortunately, a level head does nothing to prevent firery arrows from striking wood soaked in oil. Fire spread quickly burning the bridge at both ends, trapping all the warriors in the middle. Keralin acted quickly though and yelled, "Brisingr!" magic and adrenaline flowing through him. Thew flames on the end that they were going to fluttered and died but the other end was only just getting warmed up. An explosion rocked through the night, shattering the bridge on the end they had come from and spreading fire for a short distance. The five barely had time to grab onto the remains of the bridge as it fell from beneath them. Keralin clawed his way up the bridge, passing the fear-stricken guards, and onto the platform. He was about to help the guards up when another volley of fire arrows struck the bridge and the ropes connecting it. A scream of terror went through the air as the guards plummeted to their death. Keralin had never seen anything die, not even an animal, but watching those soldiers affected him in a way that he had not experienced before. He felt fear, a dangerous fear that threatened to destroy his sanity. He stood and ran, trying to get as far away as possible all the while convincing himself it wasn't real. He ran into another patrol of guards running his way to inspect what just happened. Keralin had tears running down his eyes. Even though he was fully grown, he was still only a child.
