I think it was confirmed that the third book would be green (when it was still a trilogy) and people just assumed the last dragon would also be green.....

yeah thats seems to be the case and alot of people are still saying it will be green but i don't think we need to bother what colour it is unless it hatches really early on

the only role the dragon can have in the book if it hatches is that of the bug getting squashed

yes more because then you need it to hatch and if it does during the war, then an elf would need to get the egg.

doesn't matter who gets the egg, if it hatches in the middle of the war, it will still be useless cuz the dragon is just a hatchling. even if the rider was like more experienced than galby it wouldn't matter. so since the battle probably won't end until the end of the book, then why not just not have it hatch at all?

Because then it would be what you called a HUGE let down... but if the dragon hatched somewhere near the beginning of the book and the battle is at the end, there is some chance and also if the rider is experienced

yeah and also this book maybe placed over along time period like say 2 years or so that would give plenty of time for a dragon to grow

2 years is a bit too much, for one thing, it may get boring, we only hear about some of the events. How long did it take for saphira to grow?

Saphira was large enough to fight in a battle when she was six months old. the green dragn is male and may be able to be big enough for the final battle because, it could grow faster. it would have time to grow because the battles and marching to the battles can take months. so i'm saying three or four months until the final battle, and the green dragon can fight in that one, just be smaller than thorn, unless eragon grew him for him. also the green dragon would have more experience if saphira practiced with him like everyday besides battles.

That is quite possible but this is a really random thought of mine.
The egg hatches for someone that is with Galby
Galby uses magic to grow that dragon
That dragon is trained
Glaby gets angry and hurts the rider and/or dragon
The rider and dragon decide to join Eragon, changing enough as to his/her true name being changed
The dragon and Rider are already grown up, experienced, and in time for the battle, and as a bonus they will hate Galby
