Favourite Operating System
If someone has already started a topic on this, my apologies. I looked through all the other pages, and couldn't find one.
So what's your favourite Operating System?
If it's linux, then which distrobution.
I'm kind of split between Ubuntu 8.04, or Windows XP.
A vous, monsieurdammes.

Re: Favourite Operating System
Vista is not one of my favourites. It's filled with bugs, is a memory hog, and if I was to list the amount of problems I've had with it, it would fill two pages.

Re: Favourite Operating System
I'm special I can also pull off a lot of stuff most other people don't bother trying with vista, so, if you really got around to not wining about all the little things and just buckled down and fixed it your self instead of -

Re: Favourite Operating System
This was the RTM of vista that was like that. Since SP1 vista has been very stable and has not had many problems. It is normal for a newer operating system to take more resources due to new features.
I use Windows XP, Vista, Fedora 7, Fedora 10 32bit and 64 bit on a daily basis
I have always liked xp, but I also use fedora quite a bit.

I've never tried Feodora... is it good?
I don't think I'll be getting it either way, I already have a dual booted computer.

Re: Favourite Operating System
Well fedora is the community version of red hat. A lot of the linux servers online are powered by red hat based distributions like fedora, centos or redhat itself.
Well ubuntu is considered to be a very simple version of linux that anyone could use. Fedora is another step which is a bit more advanced. You can find most applications for both of them either way. It comes down in the end to taste

Re: Favourite Operating System
I just found that when I started using Ubuntu, my computer started working a lot faster. I don't get why people still use Windows and Mac, although Windows XP is a decent operating system... all Linux distros bar Elive are free.

I prefer Mac, it's nice, easy-to-use, and appreciable. I like it over Windows any day.

Re: Favourite Operating System
With macintosh, I generally seem to get the impression that you are buying it simply for the image. The computers cost over a 1000€, and generally have much lower specs than their PC counterparts. While I know that Macs generally don't need the same specs (Windows is based on the Dos, which is a HUGE file, and this slows it down), they are hugely overpriced.
As well as that, I'm not a huge fan of the interface. It seems a little too simplified, and doesn't allow the user to get at the ''real goods''. Last if not least, macs have huge compatibility issues, and very little software works with them.
With Ubuntu and other linux distributions, nearly all open source software works perfectly well with them, so you never need to buy software again in your life. If you want closed source software, then get Wine.

Windows 2000, XP and vista are based on windows NT which is not based on MSDOS.

Re: Favourite Operating System
Oh... I guess you learn something new every day. But it doesn't remove from the fact that Windows OS's are generally larger and more performance heavy than others.

Well the windows operating system does have to deal with a wide range of computer configurations. If you are talking about the mac os then they only have to worry about there own systems, but with custom drivers you can have it running on any intel machines.

Re: Favourite Operating System
Try Ubuntu or Arch Linux, and you'll find out. Windows in general has hundreds of thousands of Viruses out their. Linux as a whole, has about 14 that can do any form of damage. On top of the general performance heaviness of Vista, you have to fork out 50 euro a year on anti-virus software (you can get AVG for free... but it generally isn't as good), which slows down your machine even further.

Re: Favourite Operating System
Well I generally recommend and use Kaspersky antivirus myself. It is a bit more expensive then norton or mcafe, but it is more built for advanced users.
Let's not forget that mac also had it's share of malware.

I don't particularly like Mac... it's a way too simplified. Also I get the impression that you are buying the computer for the sake of owning a Mac.
Also, for some reason Apple won't allow you to buy a Leopard boot disk, and install it on a PC.

So that you buy the expensive apple hardware and the so called "apple experience". If you really want the macintosh operating system on any computer (who would need this anyway) there are wyas that you can install it on almost all intel based platforms. I did it on 2 machines 3 years ago and it worked so it must be even better now. They don't want to sell the OS alone, because they want to be in full control from the beginning till the end of the products course.

Re: Favourite Operating System
They excuse it by saying that Leopard is built for Apple Hardware and that it won't work on PC's... I think that it's a load of nonsense, myself.
There are a few good mods for Ubuntu to make it look like Leopard, if you're buying a mac for the glossy look.
Meh, I can't wait for Windows 7 to go on sale.

Re: Favourite Operating System
Linix specifically Ubuntu.... now has both Mac and Windows operating sytems simulated inside itself... so its definatly my favorite....
WIndows is failing... the way seven is being compiled, it looks as it wont be able to handle the major upgrades coming to HTML5.... it wont take long for people to notice that seven is going to be just like another vista.....

Re: Favourite Operating System
I've installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a six year old desktop. It runs faster than this one year old laptop running Vista
